I've had a lot of nachos in my life, but these are on another level. The beef was incredibly flavorful--seasoned perfectly and piled on generously. Each chip was individually loaded instead of just dumping toppings on top, so every single bite had that perfect balance of crispy chip, melty cheese, tender beef, and fresh toppings. Do not skip these. I'm still thinking about them days later. For my main, I went with the shredded beef sandwich, and wow. The beef was so tender it practically fell apart, slow-cooked to perfection and piled high on what I think was a fresh-baked bun. It came with these seasoned fries that were crispy and well-salted. My partner got the enchiladas (also great), but honestly I couldn't stop stealing bites of my own sandwich. The view from the patio is ridiculous--you're looking straight at the Chisos Mountains while eating some of the best food in West Texas. The cocktail menu is legit too; the mezcal margarita paired perfectly with everything. Service was friendly and laid-back, exactly the vibe you want in Terlingua. A heads-up: it gets busy around sunset, so either show up early or be prepared to wait a bit. Totally worth it though. If you're in the Big Bend area, do yourself a favor and eat here. The owner had to re-arrange several reservations to get us a site we'd not have to change during our almost 2-week stay. The nice, wide drive-in area is so dusty that whenever a disrespectful guest pulls in or pulls out everybody gets a dust shower. Now, when you consider where it is located in Study Butte/Terlingua, no RV Park here can beat it because of the dust issues and the wonderful views. I posted this if you are considering coming here from somewhere beyond the desert, you'll not find a nicer campground other than in the Chisos basin. And those are not so nice because they are so close together. They just aren't dusty. Final word: when you come to the desert, you going to get some dust. But I love it here

Friendly, polite, and helpful, they made check-in and check-out quick and informative--handing out maps with local highlights and always being available if needed. The park itself is well-equipped: * Full hookups * Spacious, pull-through RV sites * Clean bathrooms with showers * Laundry facilities * Heated pool * Paved roads and level pads for easy setup The bathrooms were consistently clean and always available--huge plus. The lodge is a real highlight. Think "Texas-sized" with multiple leather couches, a poker table, dining space, and a full kitchen. It connects to a large laundry room with plenty of machines and seating--making laundry day feel like less of a chore. Connectivity was surprisingly solid given the remote location near the Mexico border. While our hotspot struggled to get even two bars, the park's Wi-Fi came through just fine. A few tips for travelers: * There's no ice machine or propane refill on-site, but the nearby market carries both. * STOCK UP in Alpine before heading down--gas, propane, drinks, and food are all pricier here. * Most RV sites include picnic tables and fire pits. Bring your own firewood unless you want to pay $10.99 per bundle. * There's no shade, so make sure your AC and awning are ready to go to war with the sun. Exploring the area: * Lajitas is about 20 miles from Big Bend National Park--the main reason most people come. * Don't miss Terlingua Ghost Town (~15 miles away) for a fun local vibe. The Boathouse offers cheap beer, live music, and friendly locals. Nearby, High Sierra Bar & Grill has great food and seriously good chili. * For stunning scenery, drive the 50-mile stretch to Presidio--incredible views and the cheapest gas in the region. Nighttime Pro Tips: It gets pitch black out here. The park has well-marked, smooth roads with reflectors, but bring a soft flashlight and use low beams when arriving after dark. They have a no-outdoor-light policy after 9 PM--great for stargazing, so respect it and enjoy the night sky. Final Thoughts: The Maverick Ranch RV Park delivers excellent value, especially given its remote location. Yes, prices are a bit higher due to that, but the amenities, atmosphere, and proximity to Big Bend make it more than worth it. After a long day hiking or exploring, a refreshing dip in the pool is the cherry on top.

We've both been to the…read moreBig Bend region and National Park more times than we can count, but this time we wanted to celebrate our 25th wedding anniversary doing things we'd never done. We'd experienced all the 4x4 primitive roads in the NP so this time we wanted to try the SP. Our chosen trail was Fresno Canyon and our Big Bend Jeep was more than equipped to do the job! The morning of pickup we were immediately greeted by Austin and shown to "Ruby," a new white Rubicon X with 6K miles. After very minimal housekeeping details we were on our way to the state park as we had a long trip before even getting on the trail. We passed two vehicles on their way out of the park and did not see another soul the rest of the day! The weather and road conditions ended up being perfect for our off-roading adventure! Even though Fresno Canyon is rated as easy (3/10), it's the SP's roughest trail. And there are a few dicy areas but Big Bend Jeep's "Ruby" took 'em like a champ! In the upper canyon portion there's a pretty gnarly steep, loose-rock descent. Once in the lower canyon, there are some narrow and off-camber sections. Soft sand and exposed rocks demand careful line selection to avoid bottoming out. We traversed all of this confidently with no cell signal or others around in this solid jeep! The handling and 4H/4L power definitely made this trail a breeze. A couple recommendations for Big Bend Jeep or patrons is to come prepared with a good air compressor to air down/up the tires and a decent farm jack (we had the factory jack in our jeep) just in case. After driving past other outfits in Terlingua offering jeep rentals, Big Bend Jeep's selection was far better than the rest. And it's much more convenient than renting/picking up in Marathon or Alpine, especially when attempting to do such long trips in a day! We will definitely return for more rugged adventures! Make sure to check out their little information stands on Santa Elena Canyon and the Rio Grande, and ask about their awesome book of local plants and flowers made by some volunteers! In the same parking area, there are also some bathrooms and some cool old buildings (although one was being repaired while we were there due to a fire that jumped the Rio Grande from the Mexico side)! Above the entire area rises Cerro Castellen which is a 3200ft butte, and in the opposite direction you can see the massive wall of limestone and the gap where the Rio Grande carved out Santa Elena Canyon over thousands of years. Gorgeous views and a great place to stop before one of the most popular hikes in Big Bend!
