We've gone here a few dozen times so it might be pretty good. I'll start with a warning, or tip. If you are coming here for the BBQ, and ALOT of people do, plan on waiting. There is one guy that prepares the BBQ plates for folks and it's a process. He's very meticulous, everything is focused on the one person that is placing an order. With that said, I wish they had a better/faster process. It can get frustrating when you are behind a group of people or a guy that orders ten pounds of meat. The BBQ is fantastic, and truly is some of the best you'll find in the area, if not the whole East Coast. Also, the sides are awesome, specifically the Mac n cheese and potato salad. The good news with the wait for food is that you can order beer in a separate line. They have a good list of beers, and I usually grab one while I wait for food. One last tip is be mindful of the flies. There are a ton of flies outside and they want that BBQ, too. Much different than what I was expecting from the outside looking in. The location is nice with a lot of parking. They have a very broad spectrum to choose from (always nice for me since I like to jump around). I got a flight-stout, sour, seltzer and cider -yeah I know, everything without hops. No idea about the beer or the inside decor, this is a Covid review. BUT I can review the BBQ. I ordered some pulled pork 1#, ribs 1#, brisket 1#, 2 slaws, 2xmas beans, 3 carrot cake cupcakes. It was ready when I arrived. It seemed pricy. $80. But it was good. Really moist, flavorful, great sauces, an actual slaw recipe and not just sliced cabbage, the cinnamon in baked beans was yummy. The damn carrot cake cupcakes were the most awesome. Each in its own special package w a mound of cream cheese icing, moist big chunks of nuts n raisins. Amazing w coffer the next day --or if you like contrasting flavors, probably so great w one of their more malty beers. I recommend this joint to my Airbnb guests. But remember you can only get it Thursday Friday n Saturday. And go early as it tends to sell out 2nd visit. Still Covid but slightly relaxed. Still awesome pulled pork sandwich! The food is amazing, they have pulled pork, brisket, sandwiches, and even cookies! I ordered the brisket with green beans and it was really good! The brisket was not very chewy and was cooked to perfection! They offer not only their own beer but guest beers as well. I ordered the Brooklyn Brooklyn Winter Lager which was clean and crisp! My friends ordered a flight as well. The atmosphere in The Bold Mariner is very casual and laid-back. They were playing hip-hip and it fit perfectly into the vibe. The main reason I didn't give The Bold Mariner 5 stars is because there was not enough seating for how many people were there. Friendly little brewery in a small industrial area behind a residential area. Small location but plenty of seating at the bar, tables, and a gameroom full of board games. The place is huge with two levels and a wrap around porch with rocking chairs. The staff is very friendly. I love just about every beer on the menu.Good Price and Quality beers. You cant beat that. I've tried many different breweries in the Tidewater region and this one definitely ranks in the top five. I strolled in on a Sunday afternoon, at first not too sure that I was in the right place. It's on a dead end road right between a subdivision and empty fields. I sat at one of the 5 or 6 backless barstools and ordered a flight. Now a lot of times when I order a flight, I'm pretty pleased if I get two beers that I would go back to drinking. For this one, I was pleased with just about everything. The only exception was their Dog Zebra IPA, it had too heavy and malty of a finish for me. My favorite had to be the Bold Dominion. Very balanced and flavorful, not light or bitter, just an easy to drink, all-weather kind of a beer. It may have only been 22 IBU, but that doesn't mean it was weak. And credit to the Middie lager, it was one of the better lagers I've had in a long time, I would drink this one again. As for the Frogman, they did a great job with this one too. I'm an amber beer fan, and this is another lager that just works. It has a note of caramel, but it isn't heavy or sticky like a lot of caramel beers tend to become. $16 for a flight and a pint, which is a little more than I would have expected. Despite that, it's not too hard to see why this brewery has won multiple awards over the last few years. It's out of the way, but definitely worth visiting. read more

The Bold Mariner was a perfect stop for delicious food and refreshing drinks. They serve food from Bar-Q, including one of the most flavorful brisket sandwiches around and extremely rich and gooey mac and cheese. Also, I don't normally enjoy cornbread, but they have the best cornbread I've ever had (moist, flavorful, great texture). For drinks we got a Pilsner and a sour, and both had great flavor and a smooth finish. The veranda is a lovely spot to eat - plenty of Adirondack chairs and wooden barrel tables, and shade from the sun due to the second floor above. We didn't get to see the second floor due to a private party, but I look forward to checking it out next time. read more

This place had some fantastic brews. My favorite was a joint beer with Reaver Beach called the Black Swan. And I loved Big Leagues By far best IPA in the 757. The bartender was great and helped us choose from the beers. The ambience is great, the staff is great, the location is awesome and this is just a place that you can go relax and wind down and be yourself. I fell in love with the outside of this establishment. Too cold to sit outside in the winter as there are no heaters. Rustic seating inside. One line to the right is for ordering the food. One line to the left is the brewery line for ordering beer. The food is reasonably priced. Line was a little slow due to one person taking the orders, and the same person cashing you out. She wore the same gloves preparing the food and used her knuckles cashing you out on the register (iPad looking tablet). I didn't get sick but I'm not 100% sure that's normal (or the best) food handling practices. My food tasted good despite her going back n forth, I wasn't a big fan of the Christmas beans - next time I'll try the Mac 'n Cheese. I didn't drink beer because that line was just as long as the food line and it wasn't worth it to me. I am giving them 3 stars but they have potential for the 4th if they can figure out the 2 separate lines situation! read more

The Bold Mariner makes smaller batches of more specialized beers, using whiskey and wine barrels plus sour beers. They also use the barrels to age beers and to ferment. I want to totally fall in love with this place but I haven't found a beer here that I like yet. Everything is hop heavy, IPA or sour. I know this is probably an unpopular opinion but I like a nice light fruity beer, something that doesn't feel like it's punching me in the face. I've found this at other breweries and been totally satiated, just not here. NOW, that's literally the only negative thing I can say and it's totally a personal preference thing on my part! This place is in our neighborhood and we like that we can walk our dogs to the beach and stop in here on our way home.
