We tried this restaurant twice and loved a couple of dishes! The ambiance is decent and service is quick, the staff is friendly as well! We first tried their basil bananza bowl (recommend asking them to make the smoothie a bowl) and it was so delicious- this is a must try and I must say very different from other acai/smoothie bowls you get everywhere. The passionate dragon in our second try was good not great. The vegan taco salad was very flavorful and we really enjoyed it. One thing we realised that a lot of dishes felt the same in the ingredients so we didn't order a multiple savory items but went food hopping that night. :) Food is great, but its pretty expensive :) All their sauces were great - I must say worth the buy. The unkempt person who took our order scoffed when my wife asked if they offered any soda and mocked her--openly showed disdain and contempt!--when she didn't know that "booch" was short for "kombucha". Listen, if we had known, we wouldn't have even patroned the cafe. We came for the food, which was ultimately mediocre slop. When the same person served us the meal a few minutes later, he just dropped the plates. We said thank you to be polite, and he just shrugged, gave us another sneer, and walked away without even acknowledging our thanks. Recommended by a friend, this was my first time to try a kombucha bar. Nice chill place with indoor and outdoor seating and fun mural art. Vegan, non vegan, and Gluten free options. We went after our a short hike to Akaka Falls so just had drinks. We were stoked to get street parking right in front and happy hour prices ($1off). I had a pint of Ramble on Rose which I really liked and my cousin got the Merry Mango Mint which was stronger. The Booch Bar was such a treat! As someone who tries to avoid dairy, their vegan "cheesecake" was a tasty replication akin to the real deal. The star of the show is definitely their kombucha though! I loved being able to try multiple flavors (Mango Mint, Hibiscus, Lilikoi, and Tumeric Honey Jun). I was a little hesitant about trying Jun, but I absolutely loved it and it was my favorite of the bunch! I love that the Booch Bar sells scoby, and wish I'd had the capability to bring one home to Florida with me. Hoping Florida gets a spot like this soon! read more

This might have been my favorite place I found in Hilo when I was vacationing there a couple weeks ago. It is certainly the most *unique* place, that I most wish we had a place just like back home. There's tons of great kombucha in California, but I've never seen a kombucha tasting bar like this! Anyway, turns out there's tons of great kombucha in Hawaii, too, and the Booch Bar has a rotating tasting flight, which is very cool ($8 for 5 tasters, or you can buy them by the glass.) They also have a whole kombucha-based cocktail menu, which might be even cooler (especially given they're regularly $12, which these days is pretty reasonably priced for cocktails this fancy - and even cheaper during happy hour). They also have food, but we did not enough room in our vacation to try all the food available to try. I *always* have more room for drinks, though, so especially after learning that *all* drinks (cocktails, the kombucha flight, even growlers to-go) were 15% off from 3-5 for happy hour (the benefits of being on vacation), we (me and my wife) had a flight (actually we got an extra taster due to a mis-pour, so all 6 we tried were great - the jun was the best by far, though), a couple cocktails (the two I had, the Flower Power and the Hot Mango Love, were properly craft, very unique drinks that were both great, while my wife's mule, with a local vodka, ginger kombucha and more ginger... was definitely a mule. Solidly built one, though.) And a 32 oz growler of the jun and took it back with us to drink in California (would definitely have gotten more than that - it was wonderful - if we hadn't had luggage restrictions.) And got 15% off all of that! Only one tiny complaint - I'd asked for one of the cocktails to swap the base spirit for mezcal, which they did (it was great)... didn't know it'd charge an extra $3 for it until I got the check. I wasn't upset (especially given the happy hour discount!), I just felt I should probably have been told. Was worth it though, it was a great mezcal and a great cocktail! (Though if I were there longer, I would probably have also tried the original tequila version of the Flower Power as well, which did also sound great. And cheaper, apparently!) read more

Friendly service, super hearty and healthy meals that tasted good too. A bit too tart though (some of the pickled stuff). We had the veg burger - tasted good, but very crumbly patty. The tostada and all the fixings tasted great but it was a badly done tostada - the tortilla was not made crisp enough so it was kind of half chewy and difficult to eat. Call me crazy, but I enjoyed Booch Bar so much that I visited 4 times during my stay on the Big Island! This is a SOLID spot that locals and travelers alike seem to flock to. During my span of multiple visits, I had tried the Mahi Mahi burger special, the tempeh reuben (paired with a side), the lilikoi kombucha, and the root beer kombucha. Let's start with the least best: Coming in 4th place was the Mahi Mahi burger. While the toppings were fresh and delicious (a combination of fresh greens, vegetables, and kimchi placed atop the fish burger), I was not a big fan of the burger itself. I was expecting a filet of grilled fish but instead experienced a ground-up version that was crumbling and made for a difficult burger experience. While the burger itself tasted good (bonus points for the fresh bun), the burger patty felt short of my expectations. In 3rd place is the lilikoi kombucha. This drink was absolutely delicious, light, and refreshing! It ranks so low only because of how incredible the other two contenders in the running are. 2nd place is awarded to.... the root beer kombucha. I was pleasantly surprised at how wonderful this beverage was! It had just enough root beer essence to remind me of root beer and had the delightful light carbonation of kombucha. This was definitely refill-worthy. And of course, first place goes to the tempeh reuben. This sandwich was SO delicious that I ordered it not once... not twice... but THREE TIMES. It was astronomically delicious all three times! What a perfect medley of pan-fried tempeh, sauerkraut, and tasty dressing to tie it all in. I paired the sandwich with the jerk hot sauce, which took it to an epic level of flavoring. As for the sides, I had the chips, beet soup, and tortilla soup (all on separate occasions) and highly favored the tortilla soup. SO GOOD. I HIGHLY recommend Booch Bar to any and all folks looking for some solid plant-based foods and some delicious kombucha. 10/10 would return here just to experience the magic of the tempeh reuben again. read more

This place was very hip! They had kombucha on tap which I loved. The kimchi was fantastic. Sauce isn't quite the same as bulgogi but was good! The server gave us a nice tip that to go containers cost extra if you're purchasing take out but you can always ask for one if you can't finish your meal. Literally I'm not kidding you. The art is funky and the place has a hipster, alternative vibe. He had the Nicoise salad. I had the "catch of the day." For both dishes the ahi was cooked perfectly. You could taste the fresh fish. The only problem with both dishes were it was lacking in flavor, like something was missing. It could have been the seasoning or the fat... I'm unsure but it was something. The sweet potato side was delicious and had some flavor! So my analysis is if you want healthy and funky vibes, this is your place. That we did that once we encountered The Booch Bar is very telling! VIBE: calm and cool. You bus your own table, but it's fine. There's a lot of colorful art on the walls. You can sit inside but doors and get lots of ventilation. FOOD: delicious options that are healthy and gut-friendly. We tried the tempeh BLTA, the mushroom and fish bibimbap, and the conscious culture burger. All were absolutely scrumptious, minus the conscious culture burger (very meh, which was surprising considering how showcased it is on Yelp). Everything was fresh and flavorful, but the conscious culture burger could have had some more toppings to enhance it. In particular, the mushrooms from the bibimbap were the best mushrooms we've ever eaten. I wish I could make them myself at home! DRINKS: the Matcha latte is soothing and the right level of "bold" without being too sweet (thank you!). The golden milk drink was so so. Love The Booch. It's been our go to place for breakfast while we visit Hilo. I really need my vege hit when on vacation after eating too much of the wrong stuff. The verde vegano is excellent and the French toast is the best I've ever had. Fish omelet is nice too. Lots of healthy and tasty choices. And the kombucha is really good too. We went here for our last dinner in Hilo. We had hoped to go somewhere else but that restaurant had a long wait list because it is hard to find an open restaurant on Monday nights. Either restaurants close early or are not open at all on Mondays. Go figure. Anyway, the place is not exactly kid friendly, which I suppose is to be expected since it is a bar that serves food. They did not have soda or French fries for example. We eventually settled on a turkey sandwich for the kid and the turkey portion was generous. We had to deconstruct the sandwich so she would eat it, but she liked the turkey so that was a win. I had the fish tacos. They were good, but really all I tasted was the spicy salsa. The fish portion was less than generous. The side of black beans had no flavor at all. The brown rice was ok but I am a white rice fan. The wife had the fresh catch served Korean style (bimabop) or something like that. She liked it a lot and said it was delicious. The place seemed really popular as people were constantly streaming in. It had a counterculture type vibe which is fine with me. Service was efficient.
