We are from out of town, two of us are from Vegas. It was about 930pm on a Sunday night. We yelped a place to buy alcohol/beer in the area. Came across this place. Upon entering no one greeted us, it's a pretty small place and we were the only ones there plus one other customer that seemed to know a lot about beer. He was actually helping my cousin out on the selection (not the people that actually work there but the customer was). Then we went to go pay and as a very polite and small talker person that I am I attempt to start a conversation with the two guys at the register.... mild attitude and crickets... This is a great spot if you're in the mood for a relaxed hangout with friends. There were several interesting beers on draft when I visited, which the staff was very nice about letting me try. There's also a small selection of board games towards the back of the room. This is an okay spot to build your own six pack. There is a great selection but I could not bring myself to buy anything since the prices are so high (e.g. $3.75 for a bottle of Yards Pale Ale!), even with the 10% off deal on build-your-own. In a way living so close to here is a curse. A delicious curse of hops and barley & seasonal ales! But living a block and a half away from Bottle Shop has given me a chance to take in the true variety of beer that it offers and then some it doesn't have the Foodery or Hawthorne's sized variety of beers. But it's on par with the likes of Food & Friends and wins out on 6 pack prices. The best thing about here though are their tasting events and neighborhood appeal. friend them on Facebook and you'll find out about their 2-3 tastings a month; which have featured the likes of Flying Fish, New Holland, and Harpoon. The fact that you can pick up a six pack and sit among friends in one of their super sized tables is a pretty solid deal too, and it can make for a good people watching experience. This was my first time at the Bottle Shop in South Philly - I've always enjoyed this concept at other spots in the city, and this experience met my expectations. There are only two outdoor tables, but we were able to snag a spot on a Saturday evening. We enjoyed a few draft beers followed by canned beers from the fridges. It's a seriously chill spot to hang out and they embrace that. My most recent visit was for Bill M's game night UYE. We had a nice table in the back where we could play games, enjoy any of the beers we wished to buy and even order food from local restaurants. Picture it as being at your friend's place where they have an awesome beer selection (that they charge you for). Other folks and pups were making themselves at home as well. When planning your visit, keep in mind BYO paper goods and plastic ware. Speaking of plastic, it's cool if you use a charge card, but don't forget cash for a tip- you can't add it onto the bill. The folks were friendly. The space is OK, not as inviting as Hawthorne's but nicer than the Foodery in the gayborhood. A row of tables on the left side (with no one sitting), and row of big fridges on the right. It was a bit dim and low-ceilinged. Most of the beers I have tried before but the selection is not terrible. Overall, I think I'm just a bit hesitant to buy into the bottle shop idea... I know many people are in love with it but whenever that 6 pack rings up at $20 I just end up being disappointed. I feel speciality bottle shops are in a bit of a no man's land between great beer bars in the area (Devil's Den, SPTR, POPE) and great beer distributors (such as Bella Vista). If I'm going to spend upwards of $20 for 6 beers, maybe I should have spent $20 on 4 and been social at the bar or spent an extra $10-$15 to buy an entire case of good beer for home. The variety can easily be tried and surpassed at all of these bars too (and can be had even cheaper at happy hour!). I think this is just the way my mind works but I'd rather spend $100 for 3 variety cases at the distributor to keep a mix of beer on hand at home. Overall, a good addition to the neighborhood for people who occasionally grab a sixer, but I'm not sure I'll personally be heading to pay $20 for a 6 pack very often. read more

No shots firing off on this bar (only Wine and Beer - No Hard Liquor) but they did have what appeared to be a Sommelier on-staff who was able hold her own in the wine department. She hand picked a bottle that was so absolutely splendid for a dinner party I was making my way to and everyone in attendance just raved about it. Picking wine for me has been something of an uncorked game of Russian Roulette so of course I bragged about what happened and we all cleared our pallets! Pair this positively heart pounding customer experience with friendly neighborhood dogs and non-melancholic millennial watching and I have to say, this place really hits the target! There is no way I'm giving The Bottle Shop anything but 5 stars--unless there were more stars to give. It's simple, really; I love beer, and The Bottle Shop is one of the reasons for that. You walk in, grab a little 6-pack holder (or 4-pack) and dive into a sea of awesomeness. And in my case, indecisiveness. Other than the fact that they have an insane selection of bottled beers (W/E Coast, Local, International, Seasonal, etc.), the events that take place at The Bottle Shop are pretty sweet. For instance, if you're a The Walking Dead fan, during the screening of the show they have offers that include all these cool beers that have 'zombies' and 'dead' in their name. They also have pretty tasty beers on draft which are super inexpensive; $3 for a pint of some delicious, delicious stout. The staff has always been incredibly nice! They are always being helpful and keeping a chill atmosphere at the store; the other day a customer asked them if they could get delivery to The Bottle Shop and the person working there was completely fine with it. I realized people go there, eat food, play board/card games, watch TV, drink beers, and whatever else there is to just have fun. Love this place! I live on Passyunk Avenue and have been supporting this place for years due to their expansive collection of beers and wines. However, after my experience this past Saturday, I will never be going back. My fiancé and I had stopped by to grab a few bottles of wine. While we were waiting the sandwich board in front of the shop slammed into my leg very hard. Not only did the staff not apologize, after seeing it happen. I've stopped into bottle shop regularly since they've been around. I've never had an unpleasant experience and the staff has always been quiet but at the same time friendly. No complaints here. Sure their selection is more expensive then other places but it's a specialty beer store. It's not uncommon for businesses like this. People complaining are saying they've bought out it mere convenience but still giving them their business. If it's too expensive maybe go to acme? I had been wanting to check this place out since they had opened earlier this fall, and finally went Saturday night when they were doing a special Stoudt's beer and cheese tasting. It was definitely worth the trip. This place has a good selection, and they also have a box on the register where you can suggest beers that you want to see in the cases. This place has a nice feel - sort of like hanging out in a friend's rec room, you can sit down, have a beer, and eat popcorn or hot dogs. My boyfriend and I each tried a few different winter seasonal beers, which we were really pleased with. They seem to also host a number of special events, which is always a nice perk. Great selection, great (moneymaking) concept of build your own six pack (trying to build the most expensive six pack amongst friends is a very lose/lose/win scenario), and just a nice little space in general. Been here a number of times to grab some brews, and the esoteric selection allows one to explore the wealth of different flavors that are out there in the ether... or you could always resort to picking up a six pack of some old faithful lager. The woman at the counter does bother me a lot though. Uninviting, unfriendly, just very-not-a-people kind of person. Maybe she just had a bad day, but not returning a greeting to a customer (me), and not offering me a bag to place my purchase in really bothered me. Sorry to say that bad customer service experiences can ruin what is essentially a great product (I'd refer you to my Umami Burger review... but after a bad experience with a certain website, that particular review, and an abundance of many others have been lost to history, space, and time). She set the cup in front of me, no info about it, no nothing, just stared as I drank it. My friend was going to ask about the chips behind the counter but as soon as she gave him his money back she had her back turned so quickly and then was walking off to go stock the beer case that it wasn't even worth it. One, maybe two times ok someone is having a bad day but 4? 4 times & you're like this each time is pretty off putting. It's a beer store, how can you be that miserable?? - Very limited seating outside and by the bar. People tend to stay there for hours nursing a beer just to sit outside or recently a woman was reading a book with any empty glass in front of her the whole time we were there. No one wants to be rushed I get that but with such limited seating & when you have a crowd hovering around the bar maybe the bartender should say something about monopolizing all the good seats if you aren't drinking. - I'm a dog lover but when you are trying to walk inside and the people crowded around the bar (which is at the entrance) have large dogs just moseying around on a long leash it's annoying, especially when someone you're with is allergic to dogs. From now on I'll just run in if I have no other options b/c the unfriendly environment was not appreciated on this past warm weather weekend. read more

The selection is decent and the pricing is fine. There is a beer and a price point for everyone. Of choruses cheaper prices can be found at the acme but they don't have the selection. The ambiance isn't great but it works. Sitting at the front with the windows open can be nice, although Passyunk is a pretty sleepy street most of the time. Overall it's like a bottle shop. It's fine. The reason for the 1 Star is that bear closing on the night I was there an employee dumped the shop's curbside ashtray into the street. Cigarette butts and ashes just thrown in the street. One of my brothers lives right around the corner from The Bottle Shop. When I go there with him to mix and match some six packs, I drive him up a wall...because I take FOREVER. The Bottle Shop has so very many American and Imported craft beers from which to choooose. Really good selection. Nice cold mixed sixies of good beers, and they're 10% off, these six packs. I love the selection balancing act of choosing old favorite beers and news ones to try. See, I really do take forever. Next time maybe I'll take them up on their snacks. A person can build up a powerful appetite, beer shopping. Though I've never attended any of their beer tasting events, I appreciate that they seem to have them regularly. I paced in front of that thing for at least 25 minutes total picking out my 4 beers of the evening. (They also have more beers appearing on tap up front.) Grab a pizza down the street from *** and walk right in and chow down on unique pizza and whatever beer you'd like? What's not to love? For newbies - Don't throw away your bottles! There're no waiters - so how do you think they keep track of what you're drinking? At the end of your stay, take 'em up front and that's how they'll ring you up! You can grab a board game from the back shelf and have a rousing night of Apples to Apples. Enjoy the crazy art on the walls (Or you can buy it!) After enjoying a night with the west coast, trying Red Hook Nut Brown Ale (Seattle), Tommyknocker Maple Nut Brown (Idaho Springs, CO) and Breckenridge Vanilla Porter (Denver) that I knew was delicious from previous sampling --- via smuggling direct from Denver! A good ole' Lancaster Brewing Co's Milk Stout rounded out my evening. And all prices were more than reasonable. There were also several other beers still calling my name at the end of the night. The hours are great, the prices are reasonable, they carry rotating half cases, includes happy hour specials on draught, and they'll stock something you want if they don't have it. The new location is great, but it feels a little smaller. But who the hell cares? You're not having a dinner party there. Get your beer, go home, get drunk. That's what this place is about. I was debating between 4 and 5 stars and then realized...Duh. This place is awesome with craft beer selections galore! Well, that kinda sucks too because you can end up standing there as the minutes tick by, staring at and sidestepping the large wall cooler while trying to make a decision...or six. Yep, you can build and buy six-packs to go or just grab a single bottle, lounge in a chair and enjoy. Prices are rounded off to the nearest half-dollar, leading to a clean dollar total and avoiding those pesky pennies for your transaction(s). No cash? No card? No problem. They also take LevelUp, so pull out your cell phone and scan away. Want to stay awhile, hang out and play some board games at one of their tables? Bottle Shop got ya covered there too. I'm giving The Bottle Shop one additional star because the people who work there seem to be reasonably nice. After a very long time of not going there I've gone twice recently to buy mixed six-packs. It's easy walking distance and I want to give them a chance, but again it's the prices. $9 for a St. Bernardus; Hawthorne's sells it for $7.15. Again, I do not work for Hawthorne's nor am I trying to get them more business but it's the only other comparable bottle shop south of South (that I'm aware of) and the only other one I frequent so I use it as an example to authoritatively compare prices. If you're buying a number of bottles these differences do add up and I simply can't see any reason why you would go here over Hawthorne's unless there was a travel issue, and I suspect The Bottle Shop is banking on their location to justify the prices of some of these bottles. As someone else mentioned they don't have a very good selection of imports. St. Bernardus aside, the array of Belgians is quite paltry. I was happy to see a large bottle of Goose Island Bourboun County Stout, but not happy to see it insanely priced at $29. Can't do it, Bottle Shop...I'm going to Hawthorne's, each and every time. read more

Sometimes you just don't want to deal with a bar. You don't want over priced white fish and tempura fried tots that are really just Wednesday school lunch repackaged at gastro-pub fare. You don't want a waiter with an greasy, tangled, epic beard serving your drinks. And you definitely don't want the shitty Czech house music the assistant manager picked up from his barista girlfriend. No thanks. When you're not in the mood for your neighborhood bar I think you should go to the bottle shop. Compared to the other watering holes in South Philly it is far more relaxed and devoid of the neighborhood sub-humans. There is a fairly wide selection of beers that rotate by season , and the staff is more than happy to help you out if you have any questions. I find that this place is largely overlooked as a place to chill or read. I highly recommend it . Most people jut get a a beer or a six-pack and leave. The only problem I have with drinking in is that the snacks are uninspiring. I remember when they had meatballs, but they tasted like cardboard. Nowadays they are experimenting popcorn selections and beer floats. Beer and ice cream are not appetizing to me. Otherwise, this place is a great addition to the neighborhood. read more

This is a cool spot that does things differently that other make your own six pack places, like the fact they they have lots of seating, four rotating taps with limited, hard to find brews (and growlers), and some lite snacks and comfort food (although I havent tried any of the food yet). My only complaint is that I think they could find ways to increase their selection, i think it is limited (escpecially their belgian section) compared to other places (think food and friends)...its a little nitpicky, but I kinda wish they would organize by brewery and not style. While the selection is diverse and features many great brews, I find the price mark-up to be a bit step, even for a city known for its over-priced beer. The shop is also very narrow, so when even slightly crowded it can become very cramped and difficult to move around. I wouldn't recommend this place for a grab-and-go six pack, but it's great if you just want to sit down and savor a single bottle (or two or three) of unique and seasonal beers. They also offer some beers on tap, but stick to the bottles - it's called the bottle shop after all. read more
