I was in Lilly, a charming town in the heart of Pennsyltucky, for work this week and found myself in need of a quick meal. The Boxcar restaurant, with its glowing reviews, was the first place that caught my eye. As I walked in, I immediately noticed the unique charm of this small Appalachian town in western PA.I decided to try their bacon cheeseburger, which came with the option of fries and, to my delight, they served Coke products. I ordered a Diet Coke to go with my meal. My companion opted for the Reuben and couldn't stop complimenting the food.Aside from the delicious food, I was impressed by the friendliness of the staff and how quickly they served us. In an era where dining out can be prohibitively expensive, the prices at the Boxcar were surprisingly reasonable. My burger cost just nine dollars, and with my drink, I spent a total of 11 bucks. It was a fantastic value for a satisfying lunch.If you ever find yourself in Lillie and in need of a bite to eat, I highly recommend the Boxcar restaurant. Excellent homemade food! Great service! Friendly bartenders, cool decor. The deck is small and you can watch trains from it. The pretzel sticks were the best I've ever had. Great little place to ride to. read more

Great little hidden gem. Restaurant in first floor of an older house. Looks like they really invested in it, everything looks polished and new. Table seating, pub food. Nice large bar, for mixed drinks or inexpensive common beers. Not many craft beers here. Large deck along the side, with good wheelchair ramp. From the deck, you can watch the busy railroad mainline about 50-100 feet away. Fast trains pass about every 20 minutes in both directions. Railfans would enjoy it. Between Johnstown and Cresson/Altoona PA along the railroad. Very friendly staff. A bit tricky to find, on a back street of this small town. Just follow the railroad. Free parking across the street, many spaces. Will return with friends. Missed trying the food, stopped for beer mid afternoon. read more

Food was excellent! Nothing we ordered was bad, the restaurant is very cute and tucked away in a neighborhood. I thought who ever updated it, did a fantastic job !! It was a Friday and decently busy, my only complaint was the service. Our server was super friendly and nice, but ended up putting my order in wrong which in turned caused us to wait an extra 10-15 minutes on top of an already long wait for our original order of food then again a long wait just to pay our bill. So a long wait for our food, a mistake, another long wait for additional food, forgetting an item I ordered (just cheese sauce at this point did not want it ), an error with not separating the check, and then a very solid wait just to pay the bill again. I am usually pretty lenient about waiting and understanding, but overall how they handled a mistake didn't feel that right. I felt like they could of taken $2 off or a free dessert or something, anything to say hey I know a few things didn't go right today but hope this helps ! I would still come back because all the food was very good and I love eating at local restaurants. I would just try to avoid busier times and maybe try to order less items so it's a little easier to get correct. Our favorite thing we ordered was also the Buffalo chicken fries! This place is amazing, a hidden gem set in an old train boxcar. Ample parking. Great elevated pub fair. We had the pretzel sticks with cheese dip which were amazing! Wings are great as are the Buffalo chicken fries. Pizza was thin, flavorful and with good crisp crust. Salads are huge. Great selection of food and drink. Clean inside. Friendly staff. Another local favorite- Good food & drinks. The owners are wonderful people, as well as the rest of their staff- extremely friendly. The vibe is always great there. Awesome theme- as you can see photos of trains and railcars all throughout the place. You can even hear the occasional train come through as the tracks are right across the street from the restaurant! In the summer, one can sit out on the deck and enjoy their food and drink, while viewing the trains that come by! Overall, one of my favorites in the area. read more

We stopped here on the way back from the Horseshoe Curve. Boy, are we glad we did! Very clean and inviting inside with a railroad theme. Tiffany was super nice, got our drinks right away and took our order quickly. Fried cheddar cheese balls were a great tasting appetizer! Our meals came out fast. My Vegetarian wrap was amazing! Fries were fantastic, too. My wife had a fantastic ham and turkey wrap. Food was very reasonably priced and the service was fast and friendly. Plus, if you like trains, it's right by the NS Pittsburgh line so there's plenty of action. Highly recommend this place and plan to stop again! read more

So I have waited a long time to post a review, as i have always hoped that the service would get better as time went on. I have been there numerous times and it is always the same old story. If you like your appetizer to come out with your meal every single time, go here. If you like most of the wait staff to ignore you, go here. If you like the owner, Gretchen to look at you to be seated and turn around and ignore you and keep talking to her daughter, go here. If you like the owner's daughter to be condescending when you call in for take out, go here. The only bright spots are Tiffany, Ginny and the food. I am not knocking the food. It is good, but most of the staff are not good. It has been opened for several years and should not operate like it does. Oh, and here is the kicker, they get the take out orders wrong EVERY single time!! Always forget some item and have to call and drive back to get it. We even have the order repeated back to us over the phone when we call in and they still screw it up! Unacceptable. Do better!! read more
