What in the hell happened here? Servers, hostesses hanging out at the bar talking about how much they hate your drink orders, especially tropical ones. At one point a server was literally taking a nap at the end of the bar. Another one was trying to light a lime on fire with a lighter. Peering into the kitchen we saw a chef juggling a roll of bread with his bare hands. The cream of the visit was when I discovered left over cherries from a previous old fashioned in my glass, I only know this detail because the bartender told me. He said "it's nothing that will kill you". Please avoid this diaper fire of a restaurant. Former CMU student. read more

Absolutely awful service last night. Our server, Josh, was completely incompetent. We had a group of three and we were all looking at the drinks menu. As the other two in our party were looking, I asked for a sample of a beer. After I tried it, he came back and I indicated I'd like a full pint of it. He immediately ran off to get my beer without even acknowledging the other two (who did want drinks). About ten minutes later, my beer arrived, which he dropped off, and again didn't acknowledge anyone else at the table. Then, a fourth person arrived and joined. He promptly was asked if he wanted anything to drink, and proceeded to have his order taken and filled -- again, still had not acknowledged that we had two other people at the table. As Josh tried to run away again, we pretty much had to yell "we're ready to order" to finally have everyone taken care of. This was well over a half hour at this point of half of our party being ignored. He appeared annoyed that we didn't want more drinks, never asked how the dessert we ordered was, and appeared appalled that we had the audacity to ask for our bill so we could actually leave. Brass, your food and drink selections are good (despite the prices), but you need to have a talk with this server, as he clearly does not care. read more

This place was very cool. It's nice to have a upscale option in town. Service was great, 5/5 Atmosphere was also very unique and had a more casual room and then a more formal dining room. 5/5 The food was very good - we ordered the Gorgonzola ale cheese dip and it was as good as fellow yelpers had said it would be :) I ordered the prosciutto goat cheese flat bread and it was incredible. It came with asparagus and tomatoes. It was the perfect combination of flavors. We also ordered the Cuban pork sandwich which was very good and came on delicious ciabatta bread. The brass had delicious takeout and a lot of options, everyone in the family was able to find something that sounded good to them. Two standouts were the beef stroganoff and I had the basil pesto pasta with shrimp. Even the bread was standout! I went for valentine's day with my s/o & it was an amazing experience. My server was attentive, informative, and knowledgeable of the menu and each dish I asked about. I got the Herb Crusted Rack of Lamb and she got Shrimp Basil Cappelini. Both amazing dishes, presented well and full of flavor. Hands down my best dining experience in or around Mt. Pleasant! Dinner Service: Excellent Food: Beyond Excellent Highly recommend for dinner! We stumbled onto the The Brass right here on Yelp while looking for a nice dinner option to celebrate a special occasion while we were in town. Reviews were strong and our review of the menu sounded yummy, different and special so we gave the place a whirl. We are so happy we tried. Service was excellent with our cheery waitress who made honest and spot on recommendations while providing a level of service both beyond her years and beyond what you'd expect in a small town restaurant. She paid attention to every detail, all the way down to turning the handle on my cup so as to face directly toward my dominant hand. We started with a Caesar salad and the recommended lobster bisque. Soup was a huge hit with the two of us sharing every other bite (or slurp). Yum We ordered the beef stroganoff and the macadamia encrusted walleye with risotto. Both were seriously outta this world. The beef was tender high quality and full of flavor. The walleye was fresh, tender, and so tasteful my wife couldn't stop talking about it! Both plates arrived very temperature hot, retaining their warmth throughout the meal, something EVERY restaurant should do (I despise luke warm food). Hands down best food and service either of us have had at any restaurant, anywhere, even at greater cost, in several years! Wow! My only regret is we live thousands of miles away and only get to Mount Pleasant every several years...but believe me we will return. We read about this place and saw the menu our hopes were really high! I had the Basil Cappelini with flank steak medium rare with a crab cake appetizer. I hate to put it this way because it sounds like I'm exaggerating, but not a single piece was medium rare. Half were beyond well done to the point of being inedible, the rest looked completely purple raw. With the prices I thought everything would be fresh with homemade noodles but I am pretty confident the noodles I ate were neither fresh nor homemade, they were very tough and stale. Crab cakes are usually my favorite, the crab cakes were... acidic, and not from the pickle on top. It makes me believe it was canned crab, which again from the prices would have turned me off from ordering them. I was really hoping to love this place but I really couldn't eat very much of the food. I'm giving it two stars because I appreciate that they're centered around being locally sourced and family owned and they seem like very nice people. I am genuinely sorry because it never feels good to leave a bad review, I just wanted to make the restaurant aware of my experience, although I understand it may be a one-off, or they may disagree entirely. The Brass Cafe is a really nice place to spend an evening in Mt. Pleasant. It's definitely one of the pricier establishments in town, but when you need something just a little bit on the classy side, this is the place to go. I've never been disappointed here. Most recently we just stopped by for a drink, and their cocktail list is impressive! Everything I've ever had here, both food and cocktails, has been delicious. Would easily give five stars if the food were honestly just like $1-$2 cheaper per item. read more

Really cute decor. Nice staff. I have worked my way through the menu. The flatbreads are good. The burger is good. The ribeye is good. The Fries are good. The soups are homemade and yummy. The salads are all fresh. The chips are made in-house and are good but very salty. The only item I didn't like was the Italian sandwich. Didn't care for the flavors of the brand of meat they used for this one. My fav item is the #2 lunch bowl. The combination of flavors in that bowl is on point! Love it! A bit pricey but the food is good. The drinks are good. They are closed on Sunday & Monday but you can get your grub on any other days of the week. They are consistent. I'm so glad I strayed away from the Casino and drove the 10 minutes to downtown Mt. Pleasant. Thank you, Yelpers, for reviewing this restaurant! I checked it out because of you, and I'm so glad I did. First, it's very old school in a good way - white tablecloths, brass fixtures, classic food. The service was excellent. I came in a bit early by myself, and the server was friendly and fast. Everything I consumed was top-notch, even the coffee. It seriously was some of the best coffee I've ever had. It's served with these little cookies and a tiny pitcher of cream...heaven. The roasted tomato soup was STUPID good; served steaming hot and oh so savory. The server brought a little side of parmesan cheese because that's the way he likes to eat it, and he was spot on. I told him that if I worked there, I'd eat that soup every day for lunch, and I wasn't kidding. This is one of those soups that you know they've been making forever. The flavor was so highly developed, and though it's "just" tomato soup, it was like, the best version ever. I also ordered the blue cheese and nut flatbread, and it was perfect. Cheesy with sweet dried cherries and apples and just enough blue cheese...delicious. If I lived in Mt. Pleasant, this would be my go-to place for lunch. The prices were a little higher for dinner, but I bet the food is amazing. If you're headed to Soaring Eagle for a conference or mini-vacation, definitely drive the 10 minutes to check this place out. It's so much better than casino food. read more

When I was an undergrad at CMU, I stuck to the cheap college bars. Nearly a decade after graduating, I came back to my alma mater and did a tour of the downtown bars. The Brass is definitely not a college bar. It's interior is all ornate metal fixtures, wood walls and a rustic, almost speakeasy feel. The bartender we had took great pride in both his approach/demeanor and the drinks he made. We came for a nightcap, and the mixed drink list was impressive. I can't recall what my drink was (a chocolate-and-coffee-liquor-base), but it was exquisite. We loved the atmosphere - low lightening and soft conversations emanating from tables. I took the family to a mini-vacation from Chicago. We decided to try this restaurant out based on some good reviews. We were pleasantly overwhelmed with the quality & tastes of the meals. My wife swears she hasn't had better seared scallops before, and my seared crusted fillet was done perfectly. Our kids also enjoyed their meals, especially the desserts afterwards. I normally don't write reviews (unless they're horribly bad and to avoid at all costs). However, I highly recommend this restaurant to any visitors looking for an excellent meal while in town. Our waitress Mikayla was super sweet and very attentive! We loved our Brussel sprout appetizer, it was super tasty and different from the norm. But unfortunately that's where the tasty ended. My Husband's meatloaf was blah, my burger was ok but the bun was black on one half of the top. The fries I'm pretty sure were out of a bag of frozen fries and pretty overdone. My Daughter tried the beef tip stroganoff and she was disappointed as well. The noodles were crunchy, and the sauce was pretty dull. Definitely needed some spices or more flavoring. We were very disappointed in our only visit here. Not sure if they experienced a power surge while we were there and maybe they had to prepare the food differently, but im afraid I wouldn't go back. read more

Unbelievable experience!!!! I've traveled all over the US for business and this restaurant gets *5* stars not just for Michigan restaurants but the whole US! The serves was fast and wonderful, and Food spectacular! I got the Spicy Veggie Burger YUM! They make it homemade with a homemade sauce I added cheddar cheese and beacon. Trust me you shall not be disappointed! And the House Salad. The greens were fresh and they have their own spin for it that I loved! Ps sorry I didn't take a picture of the burger as soon as I saw the food it was over! For Dessert lemon cake!!!! Wow And the Zeppole!!! Made a last minute reservation on a Saturday night at 6 which we didn't end up needing (the place was empty). We were coming from out of town and catching dinner before a show at Soaring Eagle. Our server was unpleasant; His response to us asking for wine recommendations was a blank stare, stating that he didn't know what we liked, and then recommending that we take some time and he would come back to take our order. Other than that frustration, the food was EPIC. We loved the risotto balls and spring rolls, and the seafood pasta was delicious. We were in town for a concert and walked in to have dinner. First, the restaurant was very busy and we did not have reservations. The hostess was extremely nice and found a way to seat us. Our server's name was Ellie, she did a great job and was very nice as well. The food was very good. Had oysters and their signature deviled eggs as appetizers. So I've been to the brass quite a few times and lately I've just been going to try their weekend specials because a lot of their main menu I can't have for various reasons (fish allergy etc makes me sick) so it's great to see different specials I can try! If there isn't something on special that I can have or want the cherry duck is amazing. We went last Saturday and I got the vegetable lasagna they had for the weekend and it was one of the best things I've ever had! I loved it! I wish they would make it a part of the main menu! Probably 3.5 stars. The food is good, maybe too ambitious, but better than 99% of places in the area. The service is the real downfall here. It starts from the awkward seating process, and ends with servers who are really poorly trained and inattentive. On 3 of my 4 visits here, the chef was out walking around chatting with diners. This is nice, but also sends a message to the staff that wandering away from their primary tasks is okay. It is not. There is little to no pace to the experience, little attention to details (such as clean plates and silverware between courses), etc. Servers just disappear for 10-15 mins at a time. They should close down for a day, and head over to Zinc in Midland for a benchmarking trip on how to properly provide dinner service. The menu is still too large. read more

This place COULD BE great. It screams "Jon Taffer help us!" The service was ok, but meals coming out after an hour is unacceptable, especially when my lamb shank comes out fully cooked, but cold. Delicious! After reading the reviews for this place since we have gotten here about 2 months ago, I have been wanting to try it. Tonight was that lucky night. We started off with the Honeyed Goat Cheese as an appetizer. It had goat cheese that was spread on like butter and chunks of goat cheese on it. The slices of roasted red pepper and the toasted almonds made this simple appetizer a prize-winner in my book. Our waitress offered us some regular bread with olive oil as well, but I chose not to engulf myself on bread when I knew other deliciousness would be coming shortly. I also decided two months ago, that I was going to order the Sweet Potato Rissoto and the Petite Lamb Chops off the Appetizer menu as my entree. The Risotto was unlike any risotto I have ever had. It was subtly sweet with chunks of goat cheese and toasted pepitas (which tasted just like sunflower seeds). It wasn't over or under cooked, it was just right. The Lamb Chops were coated with herbs and spices. Brown and beautiful on the outside, pink and moist on the inside. The pickled carrot that it came with was also very good, just hard to eat. My husband had the Braised Boneless Beef Short Ribs. This big hunk of meat was so tender a toothless person could eat it. It was so tasty and juicy. This came on top of a bed of Mashed potatoes. I am a big fan of mashed potatoes so it saddened me when I got too full on my meal to eat more of this goodness. As if the delicious food wasn't enough, they also had Lindeman's Framboise. I LOVE this beer, if you can even call it a beer. It is a raspberry Lambic beer "that is crisp with a very sweet, tart, berry flavor". This drink is hard to find in any liquor store in the city, and yet they have bottles of it here. This was definitely the best food we have had here and I am sure it will stay that way. read more

What a treasure! This is a charming restaurant off highway #127 in Michigan. We hesitated at the prices but a patron on the sidewalk assured us it was worth it. A young lady in dreadlocks was the hostess, the attire is mixed from casual to nicely dressed The vibe was sophisticated, gay friendly and bohemian like there might get be some serious wealth in this town but folks are cool. Cameron was our waiter is a local, very knowledgeable about the menu and accurate in his recommendation of the Lake Erie Walleye, a halibut-like local fish in a light macadamia crust over a sherry risotto with parsley brown butter and broccolini at $26. My friend had "The Big Bradley", a mozzarella, Gorgonzola and mascarpone stuffed angus burger with dreamy accompaniments at $17. I would expect to find a place like this on West Los Angeles or Boston. Kudos to Mount Pleasant, MI for this pearl of a dining spot. I loved hearing the likes of Dinah Washington and Ella while we ate. I'd be a regular if I lived in this part of the country. They even have free WiFi! read more

Downtown Mt. Pleasant is not really the first place that springs to mind when you think of places to get some food that toes the line between gourmet and casual. As a matter of fact, with places like the Bird and Blackstones nearby, it's really not even close to the first place that should spring to your mind (not that there's anything wrong with those places). Yet, somehow, the Brass Cafe & Saloon manages to pull it off. In a stylistic manner even. Although the food (and prices) do seem to be a bit on the upscale side, there's no pressure to wear a coat and tie in this place. All the food here seems to be very fresh and especially unique. From every aspect of the dining experience, this place has it together. Food is plated very well, the flavors all seemed to be balanced, and there are definitely a lot of items on this menu you won't get anywhere else. At least, not nearby. This menu is sporting flavors like duck, lamb, mixed with spicy black beans, mojo reduction (read: delicious), and all sorts of great flavors. Stuff you think you might be tired of, like chicken breast, is given a fresh face here and prepared a new way you probably haven't had before AND will enjoy. If I had to guess, I'd place the average price for dinner around $15 a person for an entree. Drinks, dessert, and any appetizers will certainly be extra. Your dinner entree does come with choice of soup or salad (not a super salad much to my dismay... that's what I thought she said, I swear!) and the obligatory basket of bread. Compared to other ho-hum restaurants, I'd say this is a pretty good value for your money. What more could you want? Well, maybe better parking. It's either the street (yeah right) or the nearby lot by the old-ass theater which has seen better days and often fills up. No worries though, it's worth it once you get in. I give this place major props for having unique entrees, great flavors, awesome presentation, and fair prices. Why not five stars? I think it's because I wish it WAS more of an upscale experience. They have a very seasonal menu so the food is always fresh and tasty. The crowd here tends to be a bit more classy than some of the neighboring spots which makes it a great place for a first or special date.
