Quite possibly the surprise hit of the trip. I was looking for decent price and great taste. I was also looking for variety since there are 11 of us and I know the young ones are picky. I was a bit dismayed to find, upon arrival, that the options were kind of limited. I was still torn between the tacos, the birria fries and the spicy chicken sandwich. I took a chance and went with the chicken sandwich, hoping that it wouldn't be too spicy. I also ordered a side of fries, not knowing that the sandwich came with fries already. I don't know why I thought the sandwich same by itself. My mistake. The chicken sandwich was very good. A bit spicy but not to the point I couldn't finish it. It also had this nice sweet taste that contrasted well with the spice. I knew my wife would like it so I let her have a bite. I was also curious about my sons birria fries so I stole a bite of those. I recommend if you come in a group, be sure to share some. It would also be nice if you could upgrade the fries that come with your meal to birria fries, you know for an extra $2 or something. From what I can tell, everything is good here. If I could, next time I'm getting birria tacos with a side of birria fries! Probably the only gripe I could find was that service was on the slow side. 2 people were responsible for the whole restaurant, besides the cooking in the back. One mostly manned the bar and the other roamed the tables while helping behind the bar too. It wasn't that busy and the place isn't that big. My man wasn't lazy and was always doing something. We are so thankful to have found this gem in Pismo and highly recommend you come visit this cute spot that is open to fresh air with lots of TVs with sports. TLDR- Service is a joke here. We're in Pismo for the weekend celebrating both of my sisters' 30th birthday this month. I stopped for a drink with one of my sisters, who I had sit down while I waited to order a drink. The bartenders would NOTTT help me. I waited probably 15 mins before one of the bartenders finally served me, he apologized and said he thought the bucket of beer next to me was mine (it was there before I got there and after I left.) Stopped here after we went next-door and this is a great place to stop and have a cocktail. They have some outside seating as far as two people watch and just enjoy your drink. The menu is a selection of beers, wines mixed drinks and cocktails. They have a featured menu with different type of whiskey, rum tequila cocktails they have a little mix of spice in them if that's what you crave. My choice was the mango margarita with the mix of Mezcal, which has a smoky flavor to it, mixed with jalapeños, and it was very good. The rim was dipped with some hot spice!! Came down here accidentally during corgi weekend, but they had space to get us in quickly. Really friendly staff greeted us immediately and got us menus. I didn't have high hopes for a place that seems like it should really just draw in the tourists, but they have a nice set up. Prices are quite reasonable for the location. The space is really nice and open and the patio was nice to hang out with our dogs. Nice and simple menu and a lot of good looking drinks. We decided to just try each of the sliders since a proper sandwich would have been too much probably. While we were waiting for the food to be prepared they checked on us regularly and kept my water topped off. The sliders came out in probably about 10 minutes which was great. Both were good size and on hawaiian buns. The smashburger slider looked and tasted the part. It seems like they had home made pickles on it, really good burger. The spicy chicken was nice and crunchy, had a hot honey flavor to it. Wasn't too spicy but had a nice crunch and well balanced sweet and spicy flavor. We both agreed that their fries are among the best we've had. Whatever spices they use I want to know, absolutely delicious. The shape is unique too, it probably lets them trap more of the seasoning. Perfect place to watch a game and have a causal dinner! This spot had such great vibes! We came in on a Saturday night and it was pretty busy! Only one guy was working but he did such a great job!!! (so sad we forgot to get his name) He was doing everything himself from making drinks to taking orders to serving food! ROCKSTAR!!! The fries were so good and flavorful! TDLR: Visited while on vacation in Pismo. The food here is absolutely amazing, sad there isn't something similar closer to home. Must try the Halibat & Chips, the breading is so light and has great seasoning, cooked to perfection. The fries are also a cool shape, made for dipping. After a long days drive, we decided a nice bar with food was ideal for dinner. The inside is on the smaller side but it was nice because it made things feel more cozy. They have these large windows they keep open which helped the beach vibes. Our server was nice, and was super quick in servicing the entire place. I got the Halibut & Chips with a Blackberry Paloma and my boyfriend got the smash burger with a Topa Hazy IPA. The Halibut was cooked perfectly, it was so flakey and the batter was light and well seasoned. The plate brought homemade pickles, lemon & tartar sauce for dipping but you could eat it on its own just fine if preferred. I knew it'd be good given the closeness to the ocean, but it exceeded my expectations for fried fish. The homemade pickles were a nice surprise and equally delicious, not a usual star on my choice of foods. The smash burger was also very good, my boyfriend is a big burger guy (typical choice wherever we go) and he was quick to finish the plate. I tried a bite and I agree that's in our top 5 of smash burgers, again excellent seasoning and pairing of toppings. I will say it's a messy one so be sure to ask for extra napkins! The fries at The Break are cut in a U shape which is unique and awesome. It made dipping them into sauce so fun, and scooping up and bits was a breeze. Service was excellent, but then again, we were two of six customers in the place and we sat at the bar and soon discovered the bartender grew-up about five miles from our home and went to the same high school our kids went to. Overall it was a good experience, the only change I would request was the music that was playing. It was for a much younger, more hip crowd than those of us that were actually in the place. Still, I would go back. By the way, the reason we chose this place for dinner is earlier in the afternoon, there was a tequila vendor sidewalk side offering samplings. I had this place on my list for a while and was so disappointed. There was a group of college age boys with a table in the center of the empty bar during my visit and they were the high-fiviest of high fivers... and they screamed every time they did it. It's a sports bar, sure, but even the other tables visibly had enough and the servers did nothing to calm them down. As for the food, the burger and chowder were excellent, but the wings... great size, cooked perfectly, served with blue cheese (excellent)... wings tasted disgusting, like seafood. They were garlic parm (look how much garlic was on there) and you couldn't even taste it. They were likely fried in the same dirty oil as everything else on the menu and the flavor was just so gross. I couldn't finish them and didn't bother taking the rest to go. Plus... cauliflower and two green beans as a garnish? What happened to good ol fashion carrots and celery? I stopped by with a decent sized group of friends for an early dinner on a Tuesday evening. It wasn't too busy and we were seated very quickly! A soccer game was being streamed on TV so the restaurant was lively and there was excitement in the air haha. Our waitress was super super sweet, funny, and personable. She accommodated all of our needs and was super helpful in answering any questions we had about the menu. I ordered a cup of clam chowder and it came with some oyster crackers! The chowder was good; a little on the salty side but yummy nonetheless! For my entree, I got a Phish's O fillet and it was SO good! I actually really loved the potato bun for the bread choice and it was just everything I wanted. An elevated version of the filet o fish (but in a really good way, trust me). I got the sandwich with a side of fries and although I was skeptical about how much I'd like them, they turned out to be amazing. They had a nice crisp and were pretty substantial! Came by because I wanted some liquor. The place wasn't busy when I arrived around 1:30 pm but was busy when I left around 2:45 pm. Bartender greeted me timely when I sat down at the bar. They had my current go to liquor of Bulleit. I had some Bulleit and a draft beer. Interestingly, they offer 2 sizes for their draft beer (according to bartender, small is 14 oz and large is 20 oz). Bartender appeared to be handling the bar and tables. Maybe management didn't expect it to be busy for a Tuesday afternoon. There is no outside seating. Service was excellent. Only reason I post a review is that whoever the woman who just started working there a while back had the whole bar to herself and when the game was done there were probably 30 people in the bar and she was serving, bartending, bussing, everything all with a smile and a kick was attitude. So the family was vacationing at Avila Beach for a quick overnight getaway but of course we were supposed to drive the long drive home on a football Sunday. Unacceptable if you ask me, but I didn't plan this getaway. So obviously I had to tell my wife we were stopping in Pismo, finding a bar and watching football. I ended up finding this spot, off the beaten path. I came in to make sure I could sit at a table with my underage son and watch the games. It is a small place but I was greeted with a huge smile, and a welcoming, friendly "yes, of course!" Awesome. So I sat there all day with my son, watching football and the many TVs around the bar while they played all the games. Lots of fans in there, having fun, enjoying themselves. Nobody getting too drunk. Nobody fighting or arguing, we were all there to have a good time. At one point, I even had a complete stranger walk up to me and tell me how cool it was that I was there with my 9 year old son. Very cool. The staff, service was all amazing. Amazing! Food was good. Eventually the rest of my family, wife and 2 other children, met us and ate as well. I highly recommend this place. And if I'm ever back in the area, I'll definitely return. We had a great time. We popped in one Sunday while camping near Pismo. Lots of TVs to watch football. Cocktails were good, most on $15 side. Nice open air with garage doors open. Did not love the lavender lemonade. I came here with a group of friends while waiting for cinnamon rolls next door (cinnamon rolls are a must have). The bartender was nice and very friendly. I got a Bloody Mary, which was really good! My friend who doesn't love bloody Mary's thought it was so good so she got one too. The drinks were reasonably priced. We hung out there for a bit and they were playing the soccer game. We brought our cinnamon rolls back and ate them there and the servers were friendly about it. They also have a front bar area that looks out to the street so you can people watch. There's nothing more intriguing to me in the food world that looks like a run-of-the-mill sports bar that isn't, a place I wouldn't give the time of day unless it was accidentally in the right place at the right time and I lowered my expectations and held my nose just to eat. This is the kind of place in the kind of location (tourist-ville) that you just expect to be like every other beach bar (or any other bar) with a bunch of TV screens and something that passes for food because they have to--but it's not. The burger (a "smashburger" that really isn't technically a smashburger) is probably the best burger I've had in San Luis Obispo County, despite what I am almost positive were house-made pickles that maybe had a little too much sugar in the brine or something that just didn't quite work. (Tip: don't try to put a spin on something that's already fantastic--you already have it in the bag, let it ride!) My eating companion was ecstatic at the simple and delicious burger, even though I had mine as it is originally designed and he had his with specific exclusions and inclusions (he didn't even notice the pickles). And the fries are also a spin kinda thing, but they work very nicely, and probably my favorite fries in the county, too. These fries are essentially a rustic (meaning a little irregular) cut across the long dimension of the potato so they come off looking a little bit like potato chips, but thicker, which means more potato flavor (not quite my favorite type of fries, which would be steak fries, but close). I haven't had anything else, but I did strike up a conversation with an older couple nearby who were having the hummus platter and the halibut fish and chips, and they said both were excellent (though the veggies for the hummus platter were, like the pickles, brined and that seemed a bit off-putting to them). They also said everything they've had at this place was good (they were locals--we live nearby, but don't regularly eat in Pismo). The service was entirely one younger woman who was excellent at her job and seemed genuinely happy we were very pleased with our burgers. A note on the brined veggies: with extensive experience in food service and a strong culinary background, and as an aware and picky diner my entire life, I get it and I actually appreciate the effort and quality (they were obviously carefully prepared and someone really cares--the carrots for the hummus appeared to be what we would today call heirloom carrots and they were gorgeous--and the plating was very nice). It's only that if you want good hummus (which apparently it is), the whole thing can be sidelined by veggies (or whatever you're going to eat the hummus with) that are, let's say, unique to the point that at least half your diners are going to have a problem with. A final note from one culinary devotee to another, in all frankness, honesty and appreciation for the skill and excellent intentions: Your crowd and setting isn't sophisticated enough to make this part of the menu valuable, but the core of it is fantastic--one detracts a bit from the other in application. But that's me--and I know it. Overall, a really unexpectedly good experience when we were just looking for something passable in a tourist town while working nearby. Bravo and thank you! read more
