A Review of the Brickhouse Inn, Gettysburg, Pennsylvania (in the Style of 1870) During my recent sojourn with my wife to the historic town of Gettysburg, we had occasion to lodge at the esteemed Brickhouse Inn, a house of most commendable character. The establishment itself is of handsome construction, its brick walls bearing the quiet dignity of years well kept. The chambers are appointed with tasteful elegance, and though we have, in our travels, rested upon beds of somewhat greater softness, the comfort of the accommodations was by no means wanting. Yet it was at the breakfast table that the Inn's true excellence shone forth. The morning repast, prepared with notable skill by Mistress Patty and served by Hannah, was of such quality and abundance as to dispel any minor discomforts of the night. Their attentiveness and mastery of the kitchen rendered the meal a delight of the highest order, and I found myself most grateful for her gracious service. In sum, our stay proved exceedingly pleasant, and we departed with a sense of satisfaction and goodwill toward the proprietors. We arrived around 9pm on Sunday May 17th We had traveled from Indiana. The code we were given did not work after multiple attempts. I called and texted multiple times to the number on the main front door. No avail. We had to stop a woman doing a ghost tour to let us in the side door. The room was exceptionally hot. 3rd floor. Very poor communication. I was texted a new number, "try this" an hour later. Not at all what we paid for. Please try to improve communication with your patrons. read more

This wasn't our favorite B&BW we've been at, I was not a fan of the codes on the door and then our rooms just being open with keys inside. Also, it seemed a bit cheesy with the "scary" old looking pictures and dolls through out the room. We were hoping for something closer to actual decoration of the time not uncomfortable paintings and dolls. When leaving (we left early for a family emergency) I emailed (which is the fastest communication they said. Explaining we were leaving. No reply, sent another email, no reply. Then finally in the morning I wanted to confirm they got any of the emails, and finally one came back. Communication isn't the greatest. Also, the parking is horrible. If each room has a spot. There should be a sign that it is that's room parking spot. There is no signage and if you get there in the dark your screwed to even know it the right parking lot. I had high hopes for this B&B but it definitely fell short. If you're looking for a "spooky" place this may be it. It all seemed a bit fake to me. I did appreciate the 2 fake fireplaces we had in our room. It hit under 40 over our stay at night, these were great. If you have neck/back problem-bring your own pillows or whatever you need. The pillows reminded me of the deflating hospital pillows. Also, there's a shareable hot tub and we didn't know about it. Maybe because it was off season, things weren't running smoothly? Our room was nice, clean and had the rustic feel that was advertised. We never received an email from the company giving us our entry code. A call to the number on the front door and that was quickly rectified. Parking was easy and we actually never needed our vehicle after we arrived. Shops, restaurants and "ghost tours " were all within walking distance. I emailed the inn about breakfast, but never received a reply, so we decided not to stay for that, which was fine. I later received a call from a representative who wanted to change us for the breakfast. I explained what had occurred and the issue was quickly resolved. We enjoyed our stay and would recommend the Inn to our friends and family. I would also return if we were coming back for another visit. Gettysburg is a great place to visit read more

My wife and I have stayed here at least 4 times, with the most recent stay being the past weekend (end of July 2022). The past few stays were over the course of the past 10 years. All of our stays prior were amazing in that the attention to detail, and extraordinary service, were noticeable. Communication was easy, the grounds were meticulously maintained and the breakfasts were a cuisine. Our most recent experience/stay was the antithesis of our past experience with the Brickhouse inn. Our reservation was mishandled, the grounds were not as polished, and the breakfast was very generic. We booked online using their website (as we have 3 times in the past) and our room wasn't reserved for the date we selected. The grounds were unpolished (grass was uncut/overgrown, and the English garden behind the houses was nothing like it was in the past). The breakfast consisted of scrambled eggs, bacon, a fruit smoothie, a muffin, and lukewarm orange juice. They now have a manager of the property instead of the owners of the property being onsite (as was true in years past - I know because we spoke with both of them during past stays). The rooms and location are awesome, which would be the only reason I'd stay again. However, their attention to detail, which kept us coming back and referring their B&B to friends and family, has disappeared. We stayed at the Farnsworth inn also, and frankly, I don't see any notable reason to choose the Brickhouse inn over the Farnsworth inn. The Brickhouse inn may have a certain quaintness but the Farnsworth inn has an awesome indoor and outdoor tavern. Plus, the staff at Farnsworth is very personable! In summary, I suppose, if you've never stayed at the Brickhouse inn in years past then you may be impressed/happy, but the quality of the Brickhouse inn has deteriorated. The Brickhouse inn now comes across as profit-oriented. read more

We were pleased by how friendly staff and other guests were. We felt welcomed and appreciated. The location could not be better. We were able to park in our designated parking spot, walk the downtown area then come back to our cozy and clean room. We highly recommend The Brickhouse Inn! read more

My husband and I enjoyed our brief stay here as part of a weekend getaway to Gettysburg. The house and rooms are very clean and comfortable, though my only recommendation is to take a note of the bed size- we didn't realize we were booking a room with a full bed, which was totally honest and wasn't that necessarily that uncomfortable, just not what we were expecting. The building can be accessed by a code and while there is no 24/7 staff on hand, someone is always accessible by phone and there during business hours. The rooms and bathrooms at all. The amenities you could ask for and you absolutely cannot beat the location for accessing the various charms of both historic and modern Gettysburg. I recommend taking the breakfast option as it was a really hearty meal and perfect for us before we set out on a long hike. read more

This was our first stay at a bed-and-breakfast, and everything was perfect. The room was exactly as described. The staff was very responsive and knowledgeable about the area with recommendations for things to do and places to eat. There was a daily champagne reception, which was a nice treat for guests. We stayed in the North Carolina room which had two rooms. Perfect for our family of four and a lovely balcony. The N is in close proximity to everything in downtown Gettysburg and the national battlefield. But welcome back also had a helpful drawing for walking or jogging, which I took advantage of one morning, getting a 3 1/2 mile jog around the battlefield from the hotel. Easy to find location, parking close by. Century-old buildings are kept in good structural condition. Stairs to the rooms are a bit narrow to navigate with luggage. No elevator. Nice spacious common area on the first floor. Breakfast was fine, very convenient during what I imagine is a hectic Summer season. read more

My stay here was truly amazing. In the heart of historical Gettysburg the Brickhouse Inn serves delicious breakfast and a feeling that you've traveled back in time. This was a treasure to be sure. The staff is courteous and attentive. The breakfasts are delightful. The rooms are clean and authentic. We went on ghost tours and giggled when our accommodations were a stop on the tour. The gardens are lovely and location is perfect for enjoying Gettysburg. I highly recommend adding the Gettysburg Tour (booked through the brickhouse) best money we spent and enhanced our stay so much. My brother and I spent three nights here (Dec. 5-7, 2021) and we totally enjoyed our stay. Brian and Tessa have restored the inn with period furniture and antique items which give it a truly cozy, Victorian-era feel; they're engaging, call you by name and make you feel at home from the minute you walk through the front door. We stayed in the New England Suite which has two separate, comfortable bedrooms (the smaller one has a balcony) and a bathroom. The entire place is kept immaculately clean and orderly, and considering that the inn is located in town, I was surprised at how quiet it is. The location is within easy walking distance of shops, bars and restaurants, as well as Cemetery Hill, Culp's Hill, the Jennie Wade House, Evergreen Cemetery and the Gettysburg National Cemetery. Each morning we were greeted with a hot, 3-course breakfast of bacon, eggs, sausage, yogurt and fruit, etc., and there is coffee and tea available in the main parlor 24/7 as well as water and soda in the refrigerator and a tray of cookies on the table. There is an outdoor garden area behind the inn with tables and chairs which would be great when the weather is more favorable. In-room color TV and free wi-fi kept us in touch with what was going on in the world. Brian and Tessa were wonderfully welcoming, friendly and helpful with suggestions on what to see and where to go in town; it's clear that they truly care about their guests and want them to have the best possible visit to Gettysburg. The on-site parking lot at the rear of the property allowed us to leave our car there and walk to many places without having to worry about parking. Our stay cost us $139.00 per night (less the 5% discount since I'm a AAA member) and it was well worth it, much better than staying at a chain hotel or motel. When we go back to Gettysburg again, we will most definitely be booking a room here. read more

We had a lovely stay at Brickhouse Inn leading into Labor Day weekend. Nowadays it's so easy to book an Air BNB online, but honestly, I think the app is overrated and I've gotten burned on there a few times, so instead we went for the authentic bed and breakfast experience. Brickhouse has beautiful Victorian inspired decor throughout, but in my opinion, the most breathtaking place is in the back. It's beautifully landscaped between the outdoor dining area lined with brick and rotiron tables, and the perfectly manicured greenery and ponds. The owners are super nice and attentive and make an effort to talk at breakfast. Breakfast was delicious both days. We had quiche the first day and french toast the next. There's also an appetizer type course, yogurt or fruit, and dessert. I was pretty excited to get pie for breakfast! They offered shoefly pie, a rich molasses pie that I believe you can only get around eastern PA, along with a few alternatives. It was a vacation for us, after all, so I didn't mind. They also leave out a snack during the day that you can help yourself to eat, if you wish. You can book conveniently on their website. We decided to stay in the New York room, which was lovely, but keep in mind that it's on the third floor. Gettysburg is already a walking heavy place, so there were a few times when we wished we didn't have to go up so many stairs. However, it clearly said that on the website, so that's 100 percent on us. This place is very conveniently located to everything. We could walk to downtown and most of the battlefields were a 5- to 10-minute drive. They even have a small private parking lot in the back. We had a wonderful stay and plan to be back when we're in Gettysburg. read more

We spent the week in Gettysburg and stayed at the Brickhouse Inn. Perfect location in the middle of everything. Out the back door you can easily walk to Culp's Hill and access the battlefield. Out the front door you can get to all the fine shopping and dining establishments. Also, the ghost tour offered through the Brickhouse Inn was tremendous. Our guide Jim was outstanding. Fresh cookies each night, complimentary coffee, and a beautiful sitting area in both the front and backyard were the icing on the cake. Absolutely perfect experience. read more

My boyfriend and I had an absolutely lovely stay here over Halloween weekend this year. I can't say enough good things about the Brickhouse! First the location is absolutely ideal for someone who wants to stay a few days and check out the town. Gettysburg proper is very walkable and the Brickhouse is perfectly situated along the town's main drag. We stayed in the Texas room and found it to be absolutely wonderful. The bed was super cozy and it was on the first floor so we didn't have to traipse up the steps with big bags. I would definitely recommend this particular room for a couple looking for a nice little getaway. Oh and the breakfast was absolutely delicious. They made it something unique and delicious every day. We especially loved the shoefly pie. The coffee was also great and they kept it full during breakfast. I loved this b&b and would highly recommend it. We hope to be back soon! read more

Really enjoyed our stay - zero complaints. Very clean and staff was very hospitable - felt like home away from home. Parking was especially convenient - off street, safe and private to the property. Surprised how good the breakfast was, they made it for us gluten free - it was quite delicious and filling. Location within Gettysburg was also perfect - really enjoyed being able to walk around and not have to drive everywhere since we were in close proximity to the house. Did the ghost tour first night and that was a lot of fun. There is a lot to learn and understand about the battle - so plan accordingly for enough time to see the battlefield/monuments and museum. Can't think of a reasonable suggestion to improve. I try to save fives for the incredible, but if you honestly can't think of an improvement, how can it be a four? Spent a couple of nights here mid week. Staff was great, room well appointed, convinient location, excellent breakfast, attentive ownership, historic building. What really impressed me, though, was the garden! It's a shady spot, which limits plants with showy flowers, but owner Brian seemingly scoured the earth for every shade loving specimen available. Had a really nice stay here. Check-in was easy, the breakfast was good and staff responds immediately to questions. The rooms are comfortable and the parking was convenient. They leave cookies, tea and coffee out 24/7 so I had a late tea alone in the Victorian house in the middle of the night, which was a cool experience. I stayed in the Alabama Room in the Welty House. This is a review for the Culp House which is run by the folks at The Brickhouse Inn. The Culp House is a beautiful residence that beats staying at a hotel or motel when visiting Gettysburg. The house was large enough to accommodate our family of five very comfortably. We stayed there in the winter of 2016 and we got a bit of snow, though the house was nicely heated and we were always toasty warm. One thing that came in handy was the washer and dryer which we used daily and is located on the second floor. There are two showers which meant that nobody waited long to take a bath. The kitchen is large and the refrigerator was full size which was great because we utilized it to cook our meals. The house is located in the middle of town close to the battlefield and restaurants and making a Walmart run. I felt like I never left home and I have nothing but warm memories of my stay at the Culp House. Highly recommended!!! read more

The inn staff even worked hard to help my partner enjoy his coffee, which he is very particular about. Best of all, we felt very safe and the inn was kept immaculately clean. Really lovely BB. I enjoyed meeting the owners and loved hearing about the history of the home. The breakfast was super yummy with the exception of diluted OJ. The room was big and gorgeous. We loved our patio space. Sadly they allow smoking in some areas which you can smell right away. You cannot smoke in the rooms but the room had a bit of an off odor. Maybe baking soda might help in that situation or plug in deodorizer. Afternoon snack was a store bought cake and some brownies I think?? They let us help ourselves to coffee and tea. We brought our own wine. Surprised how dry it was there. Great location! Walk to everything and it is very close to the cemetery which we didn't take advantage of this time. Garden is gorgeous!! And shaded which helped since we visited on a 85 degree day. I would stay again. read more

Stayed at the Brickhouse Inn B&B for a visit to the Gettysburg Battlefield. We stayed in the Carriage House and completely loved it. Located in the back of the property though a lovely garden, the Carriage House provided us with seclusion and privacy. An additional bonus was that the parking lot is located in the back of the property it was easy to transport baggage from your vehicle into the room. Our room was very clean and well-decorated with a warm appeal. Breakfast was delicious and the service was exceptional. Breakfast was 3 courses, perfect for a day of exploring on the battlefield. There are snacks (baked goods) in the main house throughout the day as well as coffee, tea, and soda. We absolutely loved our stay at the Brickhouse Inn and even decided to stay an extra night! I loved this bed and breakfast! Incredible breakfast in the mornings (fresh fruit cup, apple pancake and bacon the first day, fruit and yogurt with zucchini fritters and egg/cornbread casserole the second day). Breakfast is always followed by home made dessert. :-) They keep iced tea and cookies out at all times so you can enjoy an afternoon snack on the front porch or in the garden, which we were happy to take advantage of. The landscaping was impressive! Location gets a 4/5: good proximity to one of the shopping streets and the Dobbin house, but a teeny bit far from the traffic circle where the main area is. Still walkable if you're wearing comfortable footwear. Battle grounds are also on the far side of walkable, but you really are right in the middle of everything. Our room was nice and clean, decorated nicely, but a bit small for us. Not too the point of being uncomfortable however. We were on the third floor, so I'm sure this is not the case for many of the rooms. All in all, I'd definitely come back if I'm in Gettysburg again! read more

"This Bed and Breakfast Inn is a 10!!!" Our family recently stayed at the Brickhouse Inn, along with my brother and his family. We had a total of 8 and we stayed in the New England Suite, North Carolina Suite, and South Carolina Room in the Victorian House. Everything about our stay was absolutely wonderful! Tessa and Brian were the ULTIMATE HOSTS along with Melanie and the rest of the staff. The house, guest rooms, and social rooms are just beautiful and full of lovely antiques and the most tasteful decor. Everywhere you look there are special touches. We just loved our guestrooms, which included individual ac and heaters, so we could easily maintain our personal comfort. Each morning our family gathered around one of their large tables, just for us, and enjoyed the most delicious 3 course breakfast! They were generous in their servings and made certain that everyone was satisfied. Also, coffee, tea, cake, and cookies were set out everyday for us to enjoy! Brian and Tessa were super helpful in giving great advice, which we were happy to take and which made our visit all the more enriching. We went on a private 3 hour tour of the Gettysburg Battlefield, went to the Visitors Center to see the Museum, Cyclorama, and Film, took a tour of the Cemetery, and dined at The Dobbin House Tavern (and also the Spring House Tavern just below it). Our time in Gettysburg was the very best it could be and we could not be happier with our choice of staying at the Brickhouse Inn. And their location is fantastic, within walking distance to great shopping, sightseeing, and dining. We had looked so very forward to this trip and it did not disappoint in any way. This Inn was quaint and friendly. We were shown to our rooms promptly after the usual informal introductions to the (mom and pop) staff. There were wonderful cookies and hot tea or coffee on hand at all times. This was great because it was freezing the weekend we ventured to the battlefield. Our room was on the small size but with a nice private bathroom which was surprising given the age of the house. Room came equipped with TV, extra blankets and old school heater. The breakfast was really great. We ate off antique looking china. There were several small tables in the parlor so that everyone could sit with their respected groups or mingle if they preferred. I think I ate waaayy too much but it was worth it, that warm plate got me through a cold day of walking. This location is also very accessible to everything downtown. An easy walk to all the restaurants and shopping, although you have to drive to the battlefield but I think that is the case for all local hotels. read more

To borrow from yelp...Eek! Methinks not. Overpriced, underwhelmed. We rented the carriage house, the room was fine. Late arrival? No problem. Trouble started when we couldn't find the keys left for us and had to dial the number passed on to us by the innkeeper. Ms. Snarkface didn't really help set the tone for our stay, but we soldiered on. It was so late everything was closed and so we dined on some fine pizza down the road, but that's hardly The Brickhouse's fault. What is their fault is the totally awkward breakfast, hosted in the garden, where YOU ARE FORCED TO SIT WITH STRANGERS. Some people are into that, I get it. We aren't. There were no ifs, ands, or buts, about it though -- the staff set only a limited number of places (DESPITE EMPTY TABLES!) and that was that. Oh, and we got some doozies of the religious zealot variety. OF COURSE WE DID. So, awkward breakfast with a pair of duds. Then the food. Fruit in a martini glass. A little 2001, but fine, it was fresh and tasty. What came next was a toasted English muffin slathered in egg salad and topped off with melted shredded cheese, three slices of cheap-o bacon on the side. Srsly? For $179 bucks a night? It was absolutely disgusting. Breakfast and the 'tudes all around totally ruined our stay. Someone should take a brick to the Brickhouse, kapow. read more
