We really enjoy the Early Bird Special at The Butcher's Son in Chesapeake. Our recent visit for dinner was excellent, with good food and a great vibe. Our server, Lindsey was very friendly and knowledgeable about the menu. She was attentive throughout our meal. My husband ordered the 6oz sirloin, which he says is always very flavorful. For his sides, he chose the cucumber salad, and he subbed a Wedge Salad for his second side. He was very glad that he chose to try something different. I was impressed with the wedge salad's lovely presentation. My order included the 8oz salmon with whipped potatoes and green beans. My dinner was so tasty! And the fresh sliced bread served with honey bourbon butter is a wonderful start to the meal. Dinner was so tasty that we decided to order dessert, too! My wife and I have been enjoying The Butcher's Son more often. It is not that often that we can make their early bird special but every now and then we can. It is a fantastic deal at $15. The special lets you choose from 10oz pork chop, 8oz stuffed chicken or a 6oz sirloin each with two sides included. This week I did the 10oz pork chop and went with their recommended cooked level of medium. It was juicy and tender. My sides were the cucumber salad and the mashed potato, both delicious! Anna was our server, and she couldn't have been more helpful and friendly. Sometimes Early bird specials means the staff is not at their optimum but not at Butcher's Son! The experience had several friction points worth noting, especially for solo diners and business travelers. I'm visiting family for a few weeks and wanted a quiet dinner while I catch up on work emails. I arrived dressed for a business dinner (wearing a dress, my hair was done, I had on makeup...I did not look like some bystander off the street) and requested a quiet corner table -- I was initially seated in the middle of the dining room and had to ask again to be moved. When I asked about the guest WiFi (literally named 'TBS Guest'), my waiter Joshua mentioned they'd had issues with people using it like a café and would need to check with the manager -- but never followed up. It felt really weird and accusatory, I'm assuming they might not get many corporate business travelers that dine solo. Bread and butter weren't offered to me until after I placed my entrée order, despite already having a drink and an appetizer -- yet the couple seated near me was offered bread immediately. As for the food, the loaded baked potato was dry and the steak was decent but nothing memorable for the price. For what this restaurant charges (to my understanding, this is a "nicer" restaurant and my expectations were similar to the kinds of restaurants I frequent in Richmond and DC for work), both the food and the front of house experience should be sharper. My husband and I came to The Butcher's Son for our anniversary and had such a great first experience. Lindsey took care of us and she was awesome--super attentive, easy to talk to, and gave solid recommendations that we were really happy with. You can tell this place takes pride in what they do. They focus on high quality ingredients and locally sourced vegetables, really leaning into the whole farm-to-table, support local mindset. We started with the BBQ nachos special as an appetizer and honestly... it was huge. Easily enough to share with 5-6 people. The portion of pulled pork surprised us (in a good way). The pico de gallo was fresh and garlicky, the BBQ sauce had a nice sweetness, and it all worked really well with the American cheese. For my entrée, I ordered the Bourbon Street Drums ($24) from the seasonal menu. It's bacon-wrapped chicken legs with a sweet BBQ sauce, served with broccolini and gouda mac and cheese. Everything on the plate was so good. I would've kept eating if I hadn't already filled up on the nachos. My husband got the French dip sandwich. Lindsey recommended adding the jalapeño bacon jam (which is also paired with their French dipping spring rolls appetizer), and he said it was a great call. It added a little extra kick and flavor that worked really well with the sandwich. He didn't care for the au jus too much, so the other sauce made up for it! This is such a delicious and classic steak restaurant. They have the best "early bird special" if you go Sunday-Thursday from 4-5:30. It's $15 for a steak, salmon or pork chop and 2 sides. All are delicious. Also they have the best steak butter or sauce choices that are to die for. I love the peppercorn one. You can't go wrong with any food selection here, it's all fresh and good! For St Patrick's Day, a couple of guys from work wanted to go here for dinner. We missed the happy hour Tuesday specials, but sat down to enjoy a cold IPA and heard the special of Tenerloin steak in Guinness with corn beef and some hash. Came to the butchers son about a month or so ago and really enjoyed my meal and the atmosphere. It is often hard to find a restaurant that's open on Mondays, as most of them are closed. I made a reservation and not only were we seated immediately, but we had a tag on the table which was a nice touch. The restaurant is tucked in a shopping center, with a few other shops and restaurants. It is a pretty good size with a full bar in the back, tables, and booths. It is perfect for a date night. Everyone in the restaurant was very attentive. From the wait staff and even the chef, we were constantly checked on. The food was amazing with good portions. Bad food. Good luck ordering a bread basket, as the butter is a desecration of cuisine. The butter tastes like dust, and the basket is full of bread heels. The waitress is rude, throwing our food and knives on the table and scampering off without a word. Booths are uncomfortable and hard for the long wait times. When I received my food, the bernaise was almost flavorless and thick. The mashed potatoes were overly salty and garlicky in a way that is more than unpleasant, while the sauces, green beans, and meat are all without flavor. Disgusting. We asked for a refund and left. Came for dinner with family on a Sunday evening so it wasn't crowded. Started with the French dip roll and calamari, the rolls were very tasty but the calamari was dry and less great. The portion size was less than expected. For dinner, I had the ribeye med rare and hubby had the filet special. Steaks were all cooked as ordered. Others had the sirloin and the steak pasta. We made reservations for NYE for 8 people. The service was absolutely horrible. This is our second time going there and it will be our last. It took our food almost an hour to come to our table, and still we were missing 3 orders. When the food did arrive it was "warm". I have been here on a number of occasions and continue to hope for the best. But yesterday was the last time. I ordered to-go. I have never seen them have food ready by time they say it will be done. It always takes at LEAST 15 minutes longer. Once it was 45 minutes longer. When I go in I am ignored once I say I am here for a pick-up. They just stand there and move onto the next person in line. Making me wait even longer after! Today I waited an additional 10 minutes after it already was 15 minutes over. There were two people standing there doing nothing and I had to ask twice if they would go see if my food was ready to come out before they even went to look. Then it was cold. The steak I ordered was not cooked. I ordered medium- not even close. I couldn't eat it and will have to cook it tomorrow when I get a chance. The burgers we ordered were very bland! The steak fries looked good but were so cold and stale like- old fries just aren't good! The green beans, mashed potatoes and rolls are however on point! That gets them 2 stars. I want to like this place. But the service, the delay, the cold food, I don't know if I'll return again. Every time I am frustrated! My husband and I asked for a booth and they put us in a giant booth that seats 6 where we could not face each other and were facing out to the entire restaurant. It felt like we were eating on display. We asked for a booth for a bit of privacy. It felt rude. We sat to eat and the server seemed really nice. However, I had trouble ordering because the menu had changed since last time we were there. There were no substitutions for sides allowed and I ended up having to piece together a meal made up of appetizers and sides. The she crab soup (which was one of the main reasons I chose the restaurant) had been subbed for a crab and shrimp soup that was not as good. I enjoyed my oysters. However, I also ordered a $6 imperial shrimp. The shrimp tail tasted a bit off, but I proceeded to still try it the rest of it since I was paying for it. When I placed the shrimp imperial in my mouth it tasted putrid and rotten. It tasted the way maggots smell when they get into something spoiled. I gagged and spit it out and almost threw up. I was unable to finish the rest of my meal due to the gag reflex that wouldn't stop. I could no longer even look at the food. To charge $6 for a single piece of shrimp and not even confirm that it was edible feels a bit disingenuous. There's no way a professional chef could not smell that conferring was off in that shrimp while cooking. ​What is the method by which the food is checked to ensure it is safe for consumption? Over all the experience was good. The service was lovely. The staff was super friendly and attentive. The interior is an updated steakhouse. It is definelty one of the nicer looking spots in the area. My cocktail was great, I got the seasonal strawberry picnic. Others at the table got different drinks to mixed reviews. The seasonal cocktails and bourbon drinks seemed to be hits at the table. Others not so much. The food did not shine. Nothing was horrible but nothing stood out as being absolutely amazing either, with the exception of the dinner rolls which I could eat them for every meal of the rest of my life. Made reservations to take the wife for Mother's Day brunch. It was definitely a let down. They charged $75 a person for my wife and I and then $20 for my 4 year old daughter who ate 3 bites of spaghetti. We go here often because we always have great service and the food is above par. We went about a week ago on a Sunday and it was so crowded. It took us two hours ... it was over an hour just to get our food and when it came out, it came out cold. We were going to an event so we didn't have time to sit and wait for it to be redone AGAIN. It was also a summer day and they suggested we take it home and cook it ourself! They charged us for the entire meal both of them even when I didn't touch my plate but ONE bite bc I was waiting for my fiance to get his food to eat together. (I think they gave some discount but a discount on food that wasn't touched is mind boggling) They refused to comp the meals they clearly messed up and the customer service was horrible telling someone to take it home and cook it is insane at $70 a steak! We woulda paid for the Mac n cheese he took 3 bites of ( which had no flavor I used the salt of the rolls to salt it) but they didn't offer to comp even though our plates we clearly not touched and I was clearly frustrated. Had a girls' night out here last Saturday. Amazing! The Butcher's Son is a great place for that special occasion dinner. Anyway, we started off with cocktails. I asked the waiter to suggest a drink and he picked a martini for me. I can't remember what's in it, but it was fruity and good. We had the French dip spring rolls as our appetizer. Delicious, down to the dipping sauce and fried onions. For dinner, I ordered the night's special, which is a filet mignon with crabcake and bearnaise sauce. Filet mignon was cooked to perfection and the crabcake has lots of crabmeat.... Though a little bit under seasoned. My plate was clean. My friends enjoyed their steak and salmon dishes as well. On a Wednesday night (party of six) the bar service was very good, a server is quick to the table and speedy w/ the drinks. Everyone enjoyed their cocktails and beers. I will also say the Tonic water is top-notch; tasty w/ lime for us teetotalers. Appetizers came out fast and hot. It was the meal service that went off the rails - the kitchen put our waitress in a tough spot. The entrees came out sporadically. Two served, followed by a 6-7 minute wait while some of us had food and some of us didn't. By the point everyone was served, the entrees arriving first had gone cold. Now part of that was down to manners - not eating until everyone had been served. The two very cold entrees were refired but that made the wait even longer for the rest of us. That's on the kitchen of course. Here's the main thing - the food is good, but not worthy of the prices charged. Example: $65 for 16oz prime rib that was closer to 12oz. No horse radish, but the au jus was fine and the beef was cooked very nicely to temperature. The sides were middling. I understand that the kitchen can have a rough night, no shows and the like, but it would have been nice had a manager stopped by the table and explained. The ambiance is family friendly. read more
