Let me start by saying so many people have recommended The Butcher's Son saying it was top tier and absolutely delicious, so I was really excited to finally try it for myself. First, let me say the service was absolutely TOP TIER! The staff was attentive, friendly, and the overall atmosphere definitely gave that elevated dining experience. I don't mind paying for a fine dining experience as long as the food matches the experience. We started with the crab dip appetizer, and honestly it was solid. Definitely a good appetizer choice. For drinks, I kept it simple with a tequila sunset and substituted pineapple juice for orange juice a good drink! Now for the meals. I ordered the lamb chops with mashed potatoes and green beans. I hate to even say this because I had such high hopes, but the lamb chops lacked seasoning for me. I ordered them medium, but they were definitely more medium rare. I love a medium rare ribeye, but not so much with lamb chops. The mashed potatoes and green beans were decent, but overall needed a little more flavor. My husband had the Butcher's Burger with wedges. He said it was a solid burger, slightly overcooked, but still good overall. He did enjoy the different flavor the pork belly added. My daughter ordered the Pasta Pescatore and said it was good, but not necessarily an "oh my goodness, I have to come back for this" type of dish. Overall, because so many people told me I would LOVE The Butcher's Son, I think my expectations were extremely high. This is my husband's and I 3rd time visiting The Butchers Son, and as always we left pleased. We came in to celebrate our anniversary, first meal without one of our kiddos in ages. The atmosphere is nice, the food is spectacular, service this time was just ok but not something that would ruin our night. Our waiter was very absent for the most part, it did take a while for us to get our drinks and order; not much check backs for refills and such but overall he was a good server. The food is always amazing, I've never had a negative experience for their food. And the location is nice. The establishment is clean, more on the higher end, we came in dressed to impress for our date but you had a mix of how people were dressed. The Butchers Son was the one restaurant during my wife's time in Virginia Beach that we were satisfied with our dining experience completely. They had plenty of gluten free options. My wife didn't go back to the hotel hungry. We enjoyed lovely cocktails like their old fashioned. Their pork belly was grand. Their stuffed chicken with risotto was creamy and exquisite. Their service was on point and friendly. Our server made us feel at home where we could relax at our table that had a paper name plate with our name on it welcoming us (although we didn't have a birthday, but it was still there). The dining room had a nice 20s Gatsby vibe with dark colors and silver flourishes on the walls. They have a nice whiskey selection if you're inclined for a neat pour. read more

We had a retirement brunch for my wife, June 13, 2026. We chose Butcher's Son as we had a similar event in 2025. We were not able to enter the premises 1 hour prior to the event (set to start at 11 a.m.). We finally were able to enter the premises approximately 10 minutes prior to the event...the staff was still setting up. The chicken tenders and waffles were overcooked. We alerted the staff as soon as possible, however many guests had eaten. The management staff addressed the matter as soon as the issue was raised. Everything was really wonderful. My boyfriend got lamb chops and I got steak. I enjoy my food very much and the little potatoes were very good and so was the calamari. The service was excellent. I had heard really good things about this place and recently got to try it for dinner. We sat in a booth in the bar area and service was great. Their menu is quite large, with many options, not just steak. So many very nicely described seafood and other entrées as well. I had a tough time deciding, but ultimately chose their "Steak & Cake" which was the 6 oz. sirloin and a crab cake. I got it with their horseradish mashed potatoes and cucumber salad. But first, I tried a small portion of their house salad. The salad was pretty good, but the cherry tomatoes in it all had the stems on the back - yuck! That stuff should be removed when cleaning the produce for salad prep. But the dressing and rest of the salad was nice. The entrée was really good... the absolute best part of it was the crab cake - it was perfect! I'm from the Northern VA/DC area and am quite familiar with Maryland crab cakes and this was spot-on! Plenty of crab and very little filler and the flavors were great! The horseradish mashed potatoes were amazing too! They tasted great with each bite of the sirloin. I will say that you should never order sirloin at a steakhouse and that rang true here. The only reason I gave it a try is my local, amazing steakhouse (Fahrenheit 132) serves a Baseball Cut Sirloin which is outstanding and I had hope this might be similar, but this was the basic cut of sirloin - it was flat, a little stringy, and typical of a sirloin - it was lean and dense, thus not much flavor. Sadly, we had a horrible experience here yesterday despite several good ones before. My in-laws and my husband and I with our new baby tried to go to their happy hour which we were told about by Lindsey, our favorite server here. Yes, we had a baby at a bar but they have bar booths that are pretty nice, unfortunately it's more cramped over there than we thought so fitting 4 adults and her carseat in a booth was cramped. When we arrived my husband walked up and told the hostess that we were going to to bar and we walked over (it was about 4:45 so early) and saw about 4 people at the bar and no one sitting in any booths. The hostess followed us over and we asked her if we could sit at one of the empty booths since we had the baby and she said sure just choose one of the far ones - which we did and she brought us menus. Super friendly. When the female bartender came over a few minutes later we asked about happy hour and she said that's only at the bar - which was about 2 feet away from us. We said, "aren't we at the bar?" and she said no. Confusing, bc why was the bartender waiting on us then? So things were starting off badly, our baby started to cry which she usually doesn't while out, so I was comforting her while this all went down but essentially, the bartender wouldn't let us order anything from happy hour menu, although she was our server so I'm still thinking wtf on that one... my husband who is diabetic and had low blood sugar (so grumpy) asked to speak to the manager bc she was being difficult and he came over and then it really went sour. He told my husband that he just "blew past him" and walked to the bar - which was confusing to us and pissed my husband off bc he was holding our baby in her heavy carseat and he spoke to the hostess and said we were going to the bar. The bar area wasn't crowded at all and anywhere I've ever been they tell you to seat yourself at the bar. So my husband was pissed and the manager said he was being aggressive when he was just asking if we could order from the happy hour menu. Then he said no - wouldn't budge on it, said you HAD to be sitting at the bar. My husband said, aren't these booths bar booths? There is a partition/wall behind those booths that separate them from the other part of the restaurant... he said no, they're part of the table rotation. My husband said that seemed weird and the manager said he wouldn't assume they're bar booths. Well any nice steakhouse I've ever been to has a bar area that is seat yourself and has booths (Ruth's Chris, Flemmings, etc.). Maybe I'd buy it at dinner service, but there was no one there - not a single person sitting in a single booth but us. And why is there a partial partition?! It's confusing and the manager was being difficult and wasn't at all friendly. My husband and he went back and forth for a while but eventually we decided we did not want to spend $150 there when it was obvious they wanted us to leave. I'm guessing bc of our baby... so we packed up and left. I'm still calling bs on this bar menu issue bc if those booths aren't bar booths - why did the bartender walk over and ask what she could get us? Where was our server then? If they aren't bar booths - why the hell was the bartender our server? See where I'm going with this?! Either way - it would've been easy to say sure go ahead and order from the happy hour menu folks since the bar is 18 inches away and you can lean over and touch it from this booth. But no, it was more important I guess to prove the point and piss us off so we won't be back any time soon. Nice. Chose stuffed chicken came hot but Mac and cheese was plentiful but cold..and asparagus, barely warm.place just opened at 4, time of my reservation.. should not have been cold. ... Got it back... Still not hot.. but warmer in places .. asked if they could just microwave it... This time it came out hot.. Chicken was bland not seasoned well.. beautiful presentation . Stuffed with spinach., cheese, prosciutto.. not the best choice if you prefer a more seasoned stuffed chicken.. bread and seasoned butter was warm and very delicious . The Butcher's Son is a quality mid level steakhouse. The decor is fairly modern with plenty of references to slaughterhouses of the 50s and 60s, a nice classic look. The table they provided me was not all that stable and a bit cramped. The lighting at The Butcher's Son is a bit harsh, more like TGI Fridays and less like a high end steakhouse. Their "Early Bird specials" and daily discount deals further demonstrate that vibe. The menu has more options than most steakhouses, including lots of chicken and fish dishes. The service was courteous and attentive, but a bit chaotic in that I had two servers checking on me, often duplicating each other's work. Each of them brought me a glass of water, then a basket of bread, and each brought me the check at the end. It seemed like they weren't communicating and doubled task completion, which didn't inconvenience me at all, to be honest. They have some communication or comprehension problems with the kitchen staff: I ordered a wedge salad with dressing on the side, after which they brought me a normal wedge salad with the dressing on it. I sent it back and 5 minutes later received a deconstructed salad with lettuce on the plate and six separate prep bowls with the other six ingredients. I guess the kitchen took every single ingredient off and put them on the side? I sent it back again and received a regular wedge salad with dressing on the side on their third attempt. The chicken dish and sauteed vegetables were cooked thoroughly and seasoned with generous portions of butter, possibly too much butter, but it enhanced the taste and certainly wasn't too dry. We came to have dinner to this Restaurant a couple of weeks ago. The services was good, we had a big party but the server was on top of it, and super friendly. The food tasted good and they had a good selection in the menu of a variety of options you could pick from. However I thought the price was too much for the flavor. Also we were sitting on the back on like an "extra room", and half of the table was looking towards the wall, so definitely that part was not pleasant and it was not worth the extra upgrade for being seated on the back. Overall we had a good experience however I don't know if I will go again. I feel like when you pay a little bit more of a premium it's worth the location, the premium quality of the food, and of course the service (this one was very good). After a super long work week my husband wanted to try this place because of the happy hour that was advertised in a circular we picked up Tuesday and it was date nigh(Friday) With that said I felt like we were getting signs all evening from the food realm to leave. Then comes back, takes the menu and says she basically forgot no more Friday happy hour! Considering I had the advertisement with me I started feeling a little bothered. My husband convinced me stay. Our food- first my husband (recommended by the waitress) ordered chicken only to get told later that they were out- it took awhile for our food to come out. Then, when it did it wasn't hot ! In fairness, it wasn't cold but neither meal was hot! I finally had to say something. The waitress takes our plates and the manager comes over and apologizes. Ok, that was nice, but he comped us nothing! Not even my glass of wine. I started wondering if he thought we were trying to get over.Then the waitress took my husband's plate while I was still eating!!! For the record we can pay for our food and we did. Once again another fantastic experience at The Butcher's Son! If you are looking for an amazing steak dinner in Hampton Roads, look no further. Tonight we were seated at a booth in the bar area and had the pleasure of having Lizzie (one of the bartenders) serve us. Even with other tables and a busy bar, she was on point! We started with salads - 1/2 wedge for me (because if a wedge is on the menu, I am ordering it!) and a 1/2 Caesar for Hubby (because that is always his jam). Absolutely perfect as always. The blue cheese dressing is one of the best I've ever had, and Hubby has always used the Caesar dressing here as the benchmark for other places. Hubby loves the strip and I am a huge fan of the filet. And as always, they were cooked perfectly (rare for him and mid/rare for me). My asparagus was especially yummy with the perfect amount of light char taste. Hubby got mashed potatoes and potato wedges (don't judge - he's had quite the week at work). The only slight disappointment was my loaded baked potato. Lots of butter, sour cream, bacon and cheese, but the cheese was like a cheese sauce. It reminded me of that cheese sauce that gets dumped on cheese fries in a cheap burger joint. Again, just a slight disappointment, and certainly nothing to lose a star over. We did get dessert tonight - something we don't normally do, but again, it's been a heck of a week. Man are we glad we did! We ordered the creme brûlée and the banana pudding. The creme brûlée was on point and had a really nice sugar crust on it. But that banana pudding? Spectacular! The homemade whip on top? Just to die for. Found out they use marscapone - that just took it to another level, as well as the slices of fresh banana throughout. It's decadent, but still really light. All in all, this is the BEST place for a date night steak dinner in Hampton Roads. And, it is nowhere near the most expensive. Recently I visited The Butcher's Son with a friend for dinner; it was a first-time experience for both of us, and we were VERY pleased :-) The atmosphere is very welcoming with a classy, warm, bar kind of vibe. The venue is definitely family-friendly, but not in a Chucky-Cheese kind of way - it's unquestionably a place that's intended to be enjoyed by adults. We went early on a weekday without a reservation and were seated with minimal wait time. Our server was welcoming, efficient, and very friendly. We had menus and drinks within minutes of being seated, and our water and cocktail glasses weren't allowed to become empty. She also gave us several spot-on recommendations. As we were both in the mood for steak, we couldn't have chosen a better restaurant. Both of our steaks were exceptional. My friend went with the rib-eye, and he reported that he was very much to his liking. I went with a fourteen ounce NY Strip which I requested be cooked medium rare. They did it exactly as asked - it was melt-in-your mouth tender, seasoned to perfection, with beautiful marbeling. My steak was served with a couple of really tender, large scallops over a bed of creamy risotto. It was so good that it required my Will of Iron not to lick my plate when it was gone ;-) We also shared the French Dip Spring Rolls and the Seafood Mac & Cheese. Both dishes were tasty and well presented. The French Dip was crispy on the outside with tender chunks of beef inside; the Mac & Cheese (blackened shrimp, lobster and lump crab tossed with mozzarella, crab soup, and cheddar cheese topped with crisp panko) was delicious and instantly addictive. The portion sizes were generous, so much so that it was all we could do when the meal was done to share a single dessert :-) The meal was more than a little on the pricey side, but all told, I couldn't have asked for a bettter dining experience. The butcher's son is a nice steakhouse with a variety of options. I got the she crab soup to start, which had pretty good flavor, although it was way too thick. I'm not a big steak person, so I went with the scallops with green beans and spinach tomato risotto for my entree. The scallops were cooked well, but the risotto had big chunks of the veggies, which wasn't what I was expecting. Also everything was way too salty and very inconsistently seasoned. Some bites were fine and then others I could taste the salt crystals which was not pleasant. It was a good experience, but nothing that has me rushing to return. read more

I enjoyed their butterfly effect, a spring seasonal cocktail, that had pear and pineapple juice and had a nice light purple color. The appetizers were okay as the calamari tasted like calamari and the French dipped egg rolls were okay with the winning part being the jalapeño glaze sauce. The sirloin steak was good but it wasn't cooked as I wanted but it didn't completely ruin the steak. The green beans were not seasoned consistently as I would get a super salty ones. The whipped potatoes were good and the risotto were good. All in all a decent steakhouse that serves good food but nothing to keep me dreaming about wanting more. read more

What started out as an amazing dinner with my family, didn't turn out so well in the end. My family and I came here yesterday for dinner around 8pm. The server was great. She made recommendations, told us about specials, and was very attentive to us throughout the entire dinner....up until the end. She dropped off boxes and the bill. On the bill it clearly stated that you could pay with cash or card. If you paid with cash, the bill was slightly discounted. So we decided to pay with cash for the discounted rate. When she came back to our table, we told her we did not need any change and the rest of it was her tip. As soon as we were about to leave, she pulled aside my sister in law and asked if we thought she did not provide good service to us. She said our tip was slightly below what she was expecting to receive for her service. We, in fact, tipped her 20%. She then went back only to realize that she was mistaken and was looking at the card payment total rather than the cash payment total and forgot that it was a discounted rate. She came back to us and apologized and said that she had a long shift and hadn't eaten. I was a server for 8+ years so I'm fully aware of the disappointment it can be to give really good service only to receive less than 20% or even no tip sometimes! But never in my life would I ever go back to any table asking them why they did not tip me more. This interaction was really unprofessional. It's even worse that she was completely wrong about the whole situation all because she mistakenly was looking at the wrong bill total. This interaction truly left a bad taste in my mouth.. almost to the point I don't think I'd want to return to this location at least. The entitlement and audacity was truly baffling. If I could give 4.5 stars, I would, but since that's not possible, it leaned just a little closer to 4 for this experience. We came in on a reservation and we're sat right away at a lovely table. Our server was very nice, but sadly didn't catch her name. Atmosphere is great; gives that nice steakhouse feel with high end finishes and a dark room. It was on the quiet side and very comfortable. We decided against cocktails for this meal and stuck with water. For appetizers; we shared the She Crab Soup and the Wedge Salad for the table of 4 and it was a great start to the meal. The wedge was awesome; just a little flare added to a traditional wedge. We liked the addition of balsamic glaze. The She Crab Soup was very flavorful, but sadly served luke warm. We used it mostly as a vessel for the bread, so it was okay, but definitely would have been better hot. Entrees; at the table we got a prime rib, a ribeye, a lamb chop entree and one of the filet specials of the night. Our favorites were the rack of lamb and the ribeye. They were both cooked to perfection, super flavorful and perfectly tender. Honestly, they couldn't have been prepared any better. The prime rib was less impressive; not served hot and definitely closer to medium/med well than the requested medium rare. It was however, tender, and the horseradish sauce served alongside it was lovely. The filet special was cooked perfectly, but the sauce was inedible. It was the first meal we have sent back in ages, but the server and chef fixed it for us promptly and delivered a meal that we loved in the end. We applaud and thank them for the quick fix. The filet ended up being just as delicious as the ribeye once the sauce was removed. Let's talk sides and sauces. Their parmesan peppercorn sauce is impeccable. So flavorful and creamy. We went through every drop. For sides, their mac and cheese was wonderful, along with the fried Brussels. The asparagus was also great! In the future, I would probably pass on the creamed spinach, as it was pretty soupy. Overall, we really did enjoy our meal and know exactly what to get next time! read more

Our server was wonderful and helpful .Ambiance was nice and I love the decor. food was just ok. steak was real tender but overcooked, salmon was good quality but sauce on it was way too sweet and not enjoyable at all. drinks are way overpriced. would I go back? probably not. read more

I'm so disappointed in our experience with this restaurant. We had dined here before years ago for an anniversary and it was a great experience, so we tried again for a date night. It's very rare for us to have a sitter and go out, so it's a special night. It started off great, drinks and appetizer came out within a reasonable time of ordering. We waited over an hour to get our entrees. I usually don't time stuff like that but after about thirty minutes I started to. Once the food came out, the waitress asked if everything looked good and I said yes, but why did it take over an hour to get our meal? She responded with an apology and asked if I wanted to see a manager, to which I responded "absolutely". The manager never came. About 15-20 minutes later the waitress returns and asks if the manager had spoken to us, we said he did not and we asked for a box. It felt like we were being avoided once an unreasonable amount of time had passed since we had ordered our meals because we had been sitting with empty drinks for what seemed like a long time. Besides all of that, the food was just ok. Got the box and check and the waitress let us know they removed one round of drinks from our tab-- so that's something. The overall experience and the manager not even coming to speak with us after being requested left an impression and I will not be returning to this establishment. read more

We had a mishap with our Thanksgiving turkey and we're not able to eat it. We called up Butcher's Son and asked them if they could accommodate us with getting the turkey only since that is all we needed. They were very accommodating and even gave some extra turkey so that we would have it for a few days after Thanksgiving. We cannot thank the General Manager at the Chesapeake VA location as well as Butcher's Son enough for saving our Thanksgiving day and appreciate the general manager being so kind and thoughtful while accommodating us. We give you a 5 ++++++++++ rating. The turkey was absolutely delicious!!!! read more

We have been here a serveral times. The first time was for New Year's Eve dinner with friends. Food and service was outstanding. We came back for an anniversary dinner a few weeks later and while service was outstanding, food was good, not outstanding. We then had brunch here twice, the first time the food was outstanding but the service was not good - we had to wait a very long time for placing an order, getting drinks, getting our food but the food was so delicious! The second time for brunch, the food was just ok, I ordered the same dish. The chicken in the chicken and waffles was so dry and the waffles were soggy. I would definitley order the fruit - they give you a generous service. The ambiance is a little formal but can be very casual. So, it is. a bit inconsistent with food and service so hopefully that will improve overall. read more
