Cute breakfast and lunch spot inside the far hills train station ... nostalgic feel .. almost entirely original decor ... Major points for the unique space and attentive service .. quiche was delightful ... the New England chowder,however, just wasn't chowder .. chowder is a thick cream based stew .. this "chowder" was a thin milky soup ... it tasted ok but lacked depth and left me disappointed.. wish I had an option to give a 3.5 instead of a 3 but this dining experience just fell short in my opinion... still worth a visit if you're in the area ! read more

What a great local spot right inside the train station. Service was super friendly, and helped with my friends kids orders no problem! Everything was made fresh including a lot of the sauces. I got a roast pork sandwich that was great. Pork was tender and dipped in au jus, layered with garlicky spinach that was super fragrant and some provolone (recommended) . BF had grilled chicken sandwich and it was the same super thin rubbery chicken I had on my salad. The fries were very good! Although we only had two items, I wouldn't go back. Searched Yelp for a breakfast spot and found this one open until 3pm but they don't serve breakfast past 11:30am despite listed as a brunch spot. Our car club decided to hold a cars and coffee meet-up in the parking lot of the train station where Butler's Pantry Trackside is located. We arrived early and treated ourselves to breakfast from the menu on the chalk board. They have a tempting one option with a dish of pancakes, bacon, eggs, home fries and toast but the amount of food seemed a little heavy for me so I opted for their cheese omelette and bacon. It came with home fries and I added coffee and OJ - glad I did too. (Maybe next time I'll go for the big meal??) The eggs were cooked exactly as requested (I like my eggs "tight" not runny) and the bacon arrived perfectly crisp and hot (hard to do, in my experience). Bravo! The OJ tasted fresh squeezed and I could have ordered a second and maybe third glass. I forgot to ask if it really was fresh squeezed but non-the-less, it was yummy. I was a little disappointed by the home fries - I like mine with a little spice and a bit crispier. I didn't ask for hot sauce (my bad) and on my next visit (our car club will be back) I'll ask for a little more crispiness on the potatoes and a splash of hot sauce. I did not pull a star since my friend loved his home fries - he does not eat spicy foods so his potatoes were perfect for him. Overall, I think this is a terrific local find. The people running the kitchen know their craft and happily respond to requests for how things are done (my friend asked for his omelette to be less cooked than mine and he raved about the excellent results - he ate every morsel). Atmospheric place, comfortable interior, friendly servers, skilled kitchen man and fair prices. I think this is cool local find worthy of a visit - RECOMMENDED. See you there. read more

Today I had the best tuna salad sandwich I have had in years! A tuna fish sandwich is my standard order anywhere I go for lunch, because it tastes basically the same everywhere. It's never a "wow" sandwich but it never disappoints either. Well, the one I got from Butler's Pantry today was a "wow" sandwich! It had some magical proportion of mayo, salt, pepper, and who knows what else, because it was truly mouthwatering. Besides which, it came on the absolute freshest rye bread and had good chips and a crunchy pickle on the side. I liked the freshly brewed coffee, too. The young woman serving me was completely personable and sweet, and helpful in bringing my food out quickly, since my lunch break was only 45 minutes. She was efficient without being abrupt. In the few minutes that I was waiting, I enjoyed looking at the interesting tiled architecture, since this restaurant is inside an old, renovated a train station. A small model train running on a track above our heads was also a charming touch. I look forward to eating here again soon. read more

Arrived 20-25 minutes prior to the 7:00pm closing. Let's just say neither the waitress, nor the man in the kitchen were thrilled. Just two of us-ordered a roast pork sandwich and a cattle car salad...so nothing elaborate or complicated "close" to closing. Steak tips on salad were burnt, dry, and inedible, kaiser roll was black on the underside from way too much toaster time. How do you let things go out of your kitchen that way?! Not cheap food either; $40 for two meals w/one soda. Such an epic failure for such a super cute place. I so wanted to like this place. Based on reviews was thinking it would be a quaint local place with fresh made food. What I got was borderline 2 stars but I reserve that rating for the truly awful. If it wasn't for the fries we definitely would have been in that territory. The only thing that was good on my plate (sorry, plastic packet) were the fries. They were definitely store bought frozen fries but they were hot, cooked well, and properly salted. Ran straight downhill from there. Everything, I mean everything was store bought. The breaded chicken sandwich wasn't even the higher end frozen chicken and the burger... well the burger. First off, radically under seasoned. And I don't know how you get that little char/crust on a burger. Cook it in an oven? Microwave? And the buns were none too fresh. Went based on good Yelp reviews. We grabbed a takeout lunch while in the area this weekend. The online ordering function was super easy. Food was ready exactly when the email said it would be! They have a safe and easy process in place due to COVID. No complaints at all! We actually ended up taking the food and enjoying it by sitting in the sun at one of the outdoor tables. I love the freight train special. It's a LOT of food - two eggs, some bacon, two sausage links, two enormous (very thick and fluffy) pancakes, toast, and home fries. Only order it if you're super hungry. But you won't be disappointed. For around $14 it's a great value. I'm not normally a big fan of pancakes but I like the ones they serve here. The woman who works here (there's only one waitress every time I've gone) is very friendly and attentive. I don't know her name but she's great. (I should learn her name.) There's a TV that's always playing ESPN (with the sound off) which is nice if you wanna catch up on the sports headlines. Overall a nice quiet atmosphere. read more

This place is a hidden gem! It is the station house of the Far Hills NJ Transit Train Station. The restaurant has high ceilings, a classic old-school feel to it (station benches for some tables), is always full, and is efficiently managed by one waitress. As for the food, they have all the classics - burgers, sandwiches, wraps, etc. I got the tuna salad sandwich with a side of fries - pretty standard dish but tasted great! The fries were awesome and they give you plenty! Food was fresh, service wonderful, prices cheap, and the atmosphere was so classic and retro, I felt like I was in an old movie. Stopped here for a late lunch. I walked in at 2:15 but the restaurant closes at 3 pm for a break. It was nice to sit indoors with the AC while waiting for the train. The TV was running very loudly, so the establishment was very noisy between the kitchen, ice machine, fans/AC. The server working was a little hard of hearing (an old lady) but very sweet. She also didn't bring water, I had to ask for it. Service was slow considering how empty the place was. The food was relatively inexpensive and average taste. The menu had basic American foods, like soup, salads, sandwiches, and burgers. I ordered the roast pork sandwich with provolone cheese (cheese is extra cost), which came with potato chips. The menu described the item as "Roast Pork dipped in Au Jus Topped with Garlic Spinach served on a toasted Italian Roll." I personally thought the spinach didn't have any taste of garlic and was basically unseasoned. Would have enjoyed the sandwich more with less spinach since it made the sandwich slightly soggy. Chips were basic and nothing special. Overall a nice place to relax a bit if you are hungry while waiting for a train, but not somewhere I would go out of my way to go to. read more

Enormous sandwiches, house-made iced tea, chunky local pickles, even fresh peach pie all make this a great stop on the yelp food railroad :) Friendly and quick service too. Not just lunch, they serve dinner also. The Jersey sloppy joe is turkey, bacon, swiss and coleslaw arranged around three slices of rye, it's a meal for two, only $9. It was a disaster to eat but so worth the mess! The fish and chips had the amazing shoestring fries plus perfectly round fish nuggets, kinda looked like kid food but was tasty, $10 was fair. Also tried their chicken sandwiches, both grilled ($8) and breaded/fried ($7) were served on kaiser rolls and came with those great fries, low price for great fare. The only way to improve these sandwiches is to bring beer LOL! Nestled inside the old Far Hills train station, the Butler's Pantry tucked its kitchen into the ticket master's office, kept the old waiting room benches and added a bunch of tables in the middle. The door by the parking lot doesn't open, go around to the tracks to enter. No tables outside unfortunately. Vegetarian rating: 1 star, only option is grilled cheese. This is a local feel good classic breakfast/lunch place. It is so cute! The feel inside rages you back to the old train station days. My dad and I came for lunch. He had 1/4 pound cheese burger and shoestring fries. I had a cheesesteak with cheese and onions with chips. It was the perfect size and they are generous with their portions of fries and chips. Great service and very clean! We are looking forward to coming back again. They also have dinner and specials at night. The desserts are homemade along with the soups and probably much more. Great little independent place. Stopped in for a late morning breakfast on a weekday. Clean, well lit and the only TV (tuned to ESPN) was on at a very low volume (thank you Jesus!) Warm, friendly service. Eggs cooked perfectly. Only disappointment was green and orange peppers added to the otherwise excellent homemade corned beef hash. I think the kitchen is the size of phone booth or newspaper stand from the old train station layout - but, they prep the food properly so the wait times for cooked-to-order (better than) diner fare is good to excellent. The menu is intelligently planned and the specials are quiet fame.....the portions, generous. Beyond Pluckemin Inn and Ninety Acres, there is only Delicious Heights (who stopped selling Fish & Chips and I cut my visits there by 80% since); this little whistle stop of a train station is the best good food in town. It is the only place worth going for a sit down breakfast. Butler's Pantry a worthwhile stop for take-home lunch or dinner . . . their prime rib - - don't tell anyone about it, that good. read more

The gps took us to a random field but we found it with a u-turn none-the-less. The pricing is affordable and the atmosphere is old-on-the-go. It is a great location for train riders. The waitress was a bit slow but i take it as she was an elder. She was moving the best she could. It may help if the young girl that was bussi2the tables also took orders and check for refills while in shift with her. The lunch was absolutely EVERYTHING . We had the steak sandwich. The meat, cheese, bread, mayo combo was amazing. The food was worth the wait. I would return her just to watch the crowd and have other meals. They food makes you want to eat EVERYTHING. Unfortunately they do not have turkey bacon. Hopefully one day they add that to the menu. read more

Sounds like some shitty sandwich place set up just to grab desperate hungry people waiting for trains with pre-prepared turkey sandwhiches and crappy coffee right? NOPE!!! This is one of those small town family owned restaurants that always wanted to find but never can. The menu is fairly simple but everything is very fresh, and very well prepared. Basics are all offered-- burgers, good fresh turkey sandwiches, cheesesteaks. They also offer a full menu of 'broasted' foods which are fried-like but healthier than frying. They have homemade soups, a very large changing dessert menu, and everything is made on premises daily. If you're lucky enough to get there on raspberry pie day-- you MUST try a slice. Heaven!!!! Dinner is more involved and they have specials each night of things that are fresh, old fashioned country meals like meatloaf or pasta night or other fantastic home cooked goodness. Dont expect fast food, and dont expect it to be fast-- everything is made to order. Its a really nice old style, country living kind of place. And where else can you get raspberry pie? read more

I eat here about 2x per week, mostly for lunch. The roast beef is made fresh every day and sells out often but its a winner if you can get it. Order it on a roll with mayo or au jus. Sliced turkey is also fresh daily. I always order a side of potato pancakes, greasy and salty, just the way they should be. All dishes are cooked to order so kick back and watch the toy train set on the ceiling and save room for fresh, homemade pie. Great place, all local customers and priced right. I used to eat at Trackside all the time when I worked right down the street. Most of their options are pretty simple, nothing too special, but everything I have had there is great. I often took food to go since I was in a rush to get back to work, but I always loved going in there and people watching when I did. Far Hills is one of those small country towns where everyone seems to know everyone else. It seemed like whenever I went in there, someone was bumping into their friends or family or someone they knew. I often had the same experience, recognizing customers I dealt with down the block.
