This is rating is sole for a review of the customer service experience at the store. I've been in this neighborhood for over 20 years, occasionally I will pop into the store because they do have a good selection of items for gifts. Some of their jewelry is interesting, using local artists, their baby selection of clothing, gift, glass selection, and home decor it is a pretty good mix and always a great place to grab a quick gift. Quite a few things are from Creative Co-op with a 30% to 60 % markup, but that's OK. Pacific Cinics needs to make money. The customer service is abysmal. You do not get greeted ever, even if you pass in front of them and interrupt their conversation to walk between them so you can get through to the the aisle. (I was the only customer they were talking amongst themselves.) After being in the store for approximately five minutes, I decided it was time to go. Didn't see anything I wanted. It's sad to have this level of customer service in our town. If you don't care to be greeted or acknowledged, but only watched to see if you might take something, then this is the place for you. If you're Caucasian, no problem at all you will be greeted and treated like a valued customer. read more

What a wonderful welcoming gift store in Los Gatos that's a must-see. The Butter Paddle offers a great selection/variety of items -- and just added Simon Pearce to their multiple collections. I recently was welcomed by "Judy" and "Ann" who were extremely friendly and helpful. I bought a wonderful Simon Pearce serving bowl and trivet, and a beautiful decorative pillow. What makes the Butter Paddle extra special is that it's a non-profit, run completely by volunteers and has been open for over 50 years -- and every purchase supports Pacific Clinics which provides services for at-risk children and families in Santa Clara County. The Butter Paddle is example of "it takes a village" in the lovely village of Los Gatos. You'll be hard pressed not to find something you want to take home or gift to a loved one! read more

I came across this store looking for a Christmas gift for a dear friend. I found the loveliest silver colored nutcracker napkin holder that came with nutcracker napkins, as my friend loves nutcrackers. The volunteers working here were all very friendly. All proceeds go to a nonprofit organization, for more information go to their website. Very good quality gifts, they are a little bit pricey but pay for what you get. They wrapped my gift for no charge and now it's ready to present to my friend soon! I wish I could volunteer here but you need to be a member and I just don't have time to commit to 6 month provisionals. This is such a charming store in downtown Los Gatos! They have a wide selection of gifts and they're beautifully displayed. I was surprised to learn that it's a non-profit staffed by volunteers. The proceeds go to supporting behavioral and mental health services for families in Santa Clara county. Everyone was so friendly and helpful -- they even offer complimentary gift wrapping! Last week I purchased with cash a couple of items in cash, The items were wrapped and I put the change in my pocket and put the items in a bag I was carrying. Hours later when I went to pay for something I expected to pull out $14, but only pulled out $4. I also could not find a receipt. When I was back in town and they were open I told the staff the problem. While the problem was not fixed immediately I knew they had to research and get back to me. I said I would come back Friday when they were open until 8 pm. With a lovely note that I have attached in an envelope was the receipt and $10. No excuses, just a fix ready to go in my hand. They gave my dogs their usual treats. Wow. Epic a customer for life and that goes back as fair as years ago when the shop was on Big Basin Way in Saratoga. Shop and not feel guilty about it? Is that even possible? At the Butter Paddle, you can spend your hard earned cash on some crafty kitchen and home items and have all the proceeds go towards a good cause. This small boutique in downtown Saratoga is staffed by volunteers of EMO Junior Auxiliary that benefits children and family dealing with difficult times. The proceeds go to EMQ Children and Family Services. I appreciated the shop and the friendly staff but the items itself were way overpriced. While I don't mind spending money for a good cause, I couldn't see myself spending money on anything in there. I'm sure it does well though. It was pretty busy and I did see a few items that I liked but nothing to get all crazy about. Albeit, I do enjoy their efforts and I like the idea and the cause. read more

The Butter Paddle has relocated from Saratoga to Los Gatos. It was a traumatic loss for Saratoga. It had been on Big Basin Way since the early seventies! It was my go-to place for wedding gifts until everyone went on line with their desired items. I'm sure the store took a hit from on-line shoppers. This Butter Paddle benefits needy children and all the clerks are volunteers. So even is you pay a bit more for an item, it is good to know that profits are for an excellent cause. Volunteers do a beautiful job of buying interesting and unique items and decorating for every holiday. It must be a labor of love! The home decor items are often unique and constantly change. Seasonal items are delightful. The shop is expensive. Keeping in mind the cost of space rental in Los Gatos and the quality of the merchandise, it's amazing that there are funds to spare for their cause! Clearly the volunteers make the entire project possible. Customer service varies, of course, with the volunteers. Sometimes it is quite obvious that the volunteer is finding difficulty dealing with situations involving the public. But they are all, obviously, well-intentioned. Parking can be challenging in Los Gatos. Best to visit the shop at times other than lunch or dinner. Call ahead for hours as they vary a bit during the holidays. read more

The people who work here are really incompetent. I went to return a gift today ($80+) with a gift receipt and the two women working there couldn't figure out how to apply the credit to items I was going to exchange for. Instead they ended up refunding to my friends credit card who had gifted me the items. They didn't once apologize or come up with any solutions to fix the mistake. They just told me to contact my friend and let her know they had refunded her, which obviously I'm not going to do. I've never seen so much incompetence before. I won't be shopping here ever. read more

This is one of those little shoppes that overcharges you for simple kitchen items. Not everything in here is kitchen-related, but they are still usually overpriced. However, I did find one item here that I could not find anywhere else: an "Instant Marinater" by VacuVin. It was actually cheaper here too; paid $32 at Butter Paddle, and it's going for $40 on Amazon. It's basically a plastic container that comes with a vacuum pump so you can marinate your meat in only 15 minutes. Located in quaint little downtown Saratoga, so it's nice to stop in for a visit during a casual stroll on a Saturday. But they're only open until 5pm (4pm on Sundays). read more

I was looking for a gift for a special someone so I decided to come here and picked out this beautiful necklace. The patient staff went out of there way to help make the selection and were not upset that it was taking us a long time and kept saying"Take your time". Not only the friendly ladies staffing the cash register were there to help but they were so patient and friendly. Plus supporting the EMQ is another reason to shop here. The unique gifts and Birthday Cards is the reason that The Butter Paddle exists. You don't have to spend a lot of money for a cool and unique gift. I had no idea until I went up to the register that the money from my purchases were going to support a good cause. I noticed the name tag on the ladies working there said that they were volunteers. I asked them what that was about and they told me all about their program which helps children and families. I didn't think they were anymore overpriced than any other home and kitchen store and when it goes to a good cause how can you go wrong. The items they carry are well chosen, high quality and unique. I will be shopping here for myself and for gifts as often as I can because I will be getting some wonderful products and helping out at the same time. Sounds like a win win situation to me! This is a cute little store. They have various items from lotions to cookbooks to Christmas decorations (during the season). When those ornaments come in, I make a bee line to the store because they have a great selection! Service has been somewhat spotty. Sometimes I'll get a huge HELLO! Doing good while shopping? Yes, you can do good while getting all sort of interesting and helpful items for the kitchen or house. Amazingly, the store is completely volunteer operated by a group of women who have run this business for 40 years now. The store benefits EMQ Children & Family Services, a children's mental health organization, according to the sign in the store. But I digress, back to shopping. The store is chock-a-block with stuff, attractively displayed. If you have a fetish for kitchen gadgets, you'll be in heaven here! Who knew there were so many different ways to slice, dice or just take up space in your kitchen gadgets. There's also dishes and other seasonal items like food items. There was also a fair number of items that are child focused. I suspect the ladies who run the store have lots of children and/or grandchildren to explain those items. One of my fave stores in Saratoga, my Mom and I make countless visits here during the year. They are a volunteer run charity-type boutique organization where the proceeds go towards chosen assistance programs, and they are always good for slightly overpriced seasonal home decor that you typically can't find elsewhere. While sometimes their stuff is a little too traditional for my taste, I love going there during the Christmas season as they almost always have one or two goodies that I can bring home with me. Considering that Saratoga stores can sometimes be a little elitist, I love that the Butter Paddle volunteer ladies are always super helpful, friendly, and chatty. Saratoga also is less crowded on weekends than Los Gatos, so it's a little more relaxing to be in this atmosphere than in LG some days. I believe that BP is only open on Saturdays typically, but during the holiday season they are open both Saturday and Sunday, if you like cute home decor accessories for a good cause, check them out! read more

I'm a local woman living in Los Gatos, California that likes to support local businesses. There is another plus with the Butter Paddle as it benefits children through the EMQ Auxiliary. I recently stopped by to get a Mother's Day gift for a friend's mom but didn't find enough of a selection with their freshwater pearls and locally handmade artisan jewelry. They had some great pieces last year at this time. Just thought I share that information and advice with the person who buys their jewelry. I liked the place when it was in Saratoga, but it--like the rest of the village--needed a big shot of energy. I stopped by the new store in Los Gatos, and what a difference! Not only do they have beautiful dishware, wine accessories and jewelry, but they've added some unique gifts, like a special Los Gatos-only piece from Annie Glass.
