Buzz Mill is a really unique, cool spot in east Austin. Drive up, see the massive sign, park, get out and look around...and suddenly you realize you've stepped back in time to the Old West or as others have stated "Lumber Jack Land!" Greeted by a huge stuffed bear at the entrance and then to the wood carved coffee/bar counter...watch out for that beaver sticking his head out! Buzz Mill is certainly themed; however, not overly done (a.k.a. cheesy). Divey, yet somehow a tad trendy at the same time. Vast coffee assortment. Local roasts available. I don't indulge in the caffeinated stuff, but my husband ordered a cup of simple drip ($2; $1 after getting a $1 off Yelp check-in offer!) and he said it was great. Smelled good! I was also thrilled he wasn't buying from overpriced Starbucks (yup, I am a hater of the corp!). Buzz Mill apparently offers great coffee and the prices on the board are certainly appealing. Great java for ya dolla! This "coffee house" also has a full service bar. A few beers on tap, some in bottles, and an inviting assortment of over two dozen house-made infused liquors ("elixirs") such as Apple Cinnamon Whiskey, Blackberry Sage Tequila, and Pineapple Rum. Having had a "pickle shot" before and really enjoyed it (I know!), I opted for the Spicy Dill Pickle Vodka. Umm...very very strange. Not very dilly, and "spicy" = nutmeg and cinnamon spicy - not chile', hot pepper "spicy." None for me again thank you. Also had a $2 Hamms - cheap beer for cheap price- call me happy cheap person. Next, into the "backyard." More wood "fort-like" stuffs about. Large space with plenty of tables, dog water bowls everywhere (super pet friendly - yay!), a small stage, and two food trucks! - BBQ (Blue OX) and Vegan Tacos (The Vegan Nom). If you're hungry, which we were, oddly different choices but both great......yes, we sampled a bit (ok, large samples) from both trucks. Couldn't resist. So visit Riverside, grab a drink of your choice, head out to the patio and enjoy some meat and/or tofu, hang out with cool people and even cooler dogs...and...just enjoy! I've been here a few times now at all given hours of the evening/late night and I am still not sure what to make of this place. They seem to have an everchanging revolving door of food trucks, parking always seems to be a hot mess, and the baristas are either the most pretentious or nicest people you will ever meet. if you are a somewhat discerning beer drinker (like myself) where the only time you drink a plastic cup of PBR is when you're playing Flippy Cup, trying to figure out what they have on tap is like a draught version of Wheel of Fortune and getting side-eye and all kinds of Austin hipster shade because you dare ask what the Karbach they are currently serving is when there are 8 people behind you in line is not my idea of a fun evening. Seriously, print a damn beer menu or put it on a chalkboard somewehre?! The crowd here is also a weird eclectic mix of the entire Austin population. I did enjoy a recent local artists art show in the little back corner of their patio. This place definitely has its regulars and is attractive to certain demographics, but alas, I am not one of them. read more

Close to our Hostel, we trek 10 minutes in the sizzling heat to get breakfast. And what did I get to cool down? A hot late. Honey badger late: delicious, addicting, perfect balance, easy to drink for noncoffee drinker. Breakfast taco: small cute just enough calories to get us through a 40 minutes hike. They got some amazing pickled vegetables available to dress up your taco. Pickle okra was especially addicting. So sad when we went back again the next day the spread of pickles were not out so maybe they don't put it out early. Salsa though was available, check the fridge if you don't see it out. A great place to chill or grab something quick. Open 24 hours so it's a lifesaver for those late nights. The ordering can be a bit confusing since they have pop-up food truck outside that let you order from and eat inside but they're not open 24/7 so there's not a lot of chance to try other food. The original draw for me was grabbing cheesesteaks at 1776 prior to a show at Emo's (walking distance from one another - right across Riverside) and I was a couple visits in before I even realized that there's an actual building nestled amongst the food trucks and compost bins. I couldn't be happier with that discovery...astoundingly good coffee drinks are to be had in lumberjack HQ, and they also have THE coolest looking selection of house-infused spirits... LOVE! They have events - comedy, music, market days - and (how awesome is this...) grown up versions of Scouts, the Lumber Society. Who *wouldn't* want to be a Scout when the meetings take place over beers?! I love Buzz Mill and will stop in for excellent cappuccino. However, yesterday I was in around 2:30 pm and ordered an almond milk cappuccino. After I left and took a sip, I noticed it tasted different and thought perhaps the barista used sweetened almond milk or the business changed espresso brands. But later I figured out that instead of almond milk, the barista used dairy milk...explains why it tasted so good and different from an almond milk coffee drink. I'm lactose intolerant and a few hours later had stomach cramps and was in a lot of pain. Please realize some people order almond milk not to be bougie but because they can't digest lactose. I'm a barista, too and understand it's a pain to use alternative milks. But I did pay an extra dollar for it. And tipped two dollars for the privilege of being ill for two days. This place is the true definition of dive. Its a 24 hour coffee/beer/liquor/food spot. I met some coworkers for drinks here after work recently. The outside is a hodge-podge of picnic tables, food trucks, lights and a small stage area. I had a really nice hard cider on tap. A bit of a cinnamon flavor. The rest of the group had a mix of beers and mixed drinks. They also have a ton of flavored spirits - sweet and savory options. We did not have any food but there were several food trucks in front and behind the store that you could order from. Definitely a weird place but fun. read more

I was in Austin for a charity event and used an AirBnB near the Buzzmill. I walked to it the first morning to try their coffee. I think their Mocha was one of the best I've ever had. EVER! There is a StarSucks right across the road but I'll never go to one of those sludge places again. Buzzmill has a cool vibe, super friendly staff and the best part...open 24x7. They sell beer, but I didn't try any of them. I really wanted to give them 5 stars but being honest, my buddy got a burger that he barely touched. He said it was horrible. He didn't complain, he simply didn't finish it. My last day in Austin was today and I went there for a final cup of coffee. I grabbed a breakfast burrito. It was luke warm, but not bad overall. It's quiet during the week so a good place to bring your laptop and work. I ordered an almond milk iced vanilla latte which was heaven and please note - they make their vanilla in house - not some chemical store bought vanilla - the real stuff and you can tell. Sooo I was in between showing homes and wanted to stop somewhere I could get coffee and real food. Yelp led me to Buzz Mill. I walked up on the patio and in through the side entrance that connects the two. A guy covered in tatts with a long beard at a table stared at me intensely like "who's this bubbly b*tch wearing a dress". I quickly noticed everyone inside was wearing black/ flannel/ tattoos and if you were a girl you had glasses on. I felt super out of place. I walked up to the bar and asked for a latte, and what syrups they had. He said a homemade vanilla was my option. Cool. Love that it's homemade at least. I asked if the food trailer outside was my food option and he said yeah but they don't open until 5:30 tonight. Got my latte/ which was beautiful and delicious and headed out to the patio where the atmosphere was much lighter and inviting. So I'm a little torn. The inside was dark, judgy and intense. The outside patio made up for it with the greenery hanging up and some sunflowers to boot! It made for great patio working weather. That being said I'll probably come back, I just might send someone inside to purchase my beverage! Ha! read more

Love this place. The infused alcohols make for some unique drinks and I always defer to the bartender for their choice of mixer and they never disappoint. Their coffee is also worth a visit if you're not into drinking yet that day. Outside there is lots of seating and always some good people watching (or be watched). First, this is one of the few places that is open 24 hours. So you can be confident as this place being a hangout option no matter what hour of the day or night it is. Second, they have a plethora of food truck options. Plow Burger offers some of the best plant-based burgers in Austin, and you'll be hard-pressed to taste the difference between them and a true-meat burger. The last time I went, I had one of their specials which was a doughnut burger. Lil' Nonna's is a pizza food truck that offers both NY style pizza and gluten-free pizza. Then there's 1776 Cheesecake Co which has great-tasting cheesecakes. Third, they offer an incredible selection of house-made infused spirits. The display is impressive, and they give you a way to spice up any drink that you might normally get elsewhere. Fourth, they host lots of events, from live music to comedy shows. If I didn't live so far north, I'd go to The Buzz Mill more often, but even living so far away, it's still a place I always have on my mind as a top option to meet up at with friends, and I'm always willing to drive more if it means meeting up in a place like this. read more

Really want to love this place but consistency seems to be an issue. Pros: Great location and vibe. Pretty unique in Austin. Coffee is great and cocktail/beer selection is nice. Food trucks outside are vegan and I promise you won't miss the meat!! Love the indoor and outdoor space. Dog friendly patio and nice variety of music if you hit the timing right. Con: Service is hit or miss. It is either stellar or sucky. Never in-between. One visit they go out of their way to be friendly and get your order right. Next visit they mess up the orders, seem put off when you ask nicely for the correction, and act like pouring a cup of coffee/cocktail is a chore. Look.. you don't have to be polly perky all the time but if you are in food service, and you want to keep folks coming back, either be really good at getting things right or really good at fixing mistakes.
