We went with a small round cake for 8-10 people, and I sent over a few photos of what I had in mind for the 'Cars theme.' But I'd like to talk about the flavors. I ordered a Lavender cake with lemon buttercream, raspberry preserves, and vanilla buttercream. The cake was de-lish-shussssss!!!!!! It was the perfect real lavender cake with bits of lavender buds. It did not taste of artificial flavoring. The lemon buttercream was perfectly tart. I've had her vanilla cake with raspberry and lemon filing and a white chocolate buttercream at Anoydyne - stellar. On the customer end, Cecelia is the sweetest woman and a very accommodating baker/business owner. I emailed her for an emergency cake for a friend's bday, giving less than her required two weeks notice. She came through! Because we are still dealing with a pandemic, there was nothing much I could really do besides give my son a super special cake! I chose the Cake Lady because the pictures of her cakes always looked so beautifully done, so I figured a cake with her would definitely be a hit. I sent her a picture of what I wanted, she confirmed she could do it and set up a time for me to pick up the cake at 10am on January 8th. A couple of days before the pick up date, I asked her if I could switch the time to 1-2pm. She said 1-2pm worked for her. The day of pick up, Cece sent me a couple of emails and one text, that I didn't see right away, saying that she had to leave at 2pm to the latest. My husband got to the door at 2:02pm (due to parking on the east side) and sat there for a few minutes and no one was there. He called me and informed me of this, so I texted Cece (this is when I saw her text for the first time about leaving at 2pm) and I told her that my husband was there and asked will she be back at all. Because we have iPhones, I could tell she was about to respond but she didn't. I waited 20 more minutes, and no response, so I checked my email to see what she actually said there. At 1:53pm, AGAIN 1:53pm, she sent an email stating that we would have to pick up the cake the NEXT DAY in the morning. So she left before 2pm!!!! I immediately texted her back and asked if her employee could be there on the actual day because the 8th was my son's birthday not Saturday, the 9th. Then I reminded her that we agreed between 1-2pm and if this time didn't work, I would have gladly kept it at the original time of 10am. THEN she responded that she wasn't going back and forth with me(which wasn't the case, because she didn't respond to me for almost 30minutes) and that she GUESSED she would have to turn around from going to her COTTAGE to bring me my cake. I couldn't and still cant believe it. This small business owner, with whom I had never worked with before, made it seem like I was inconveniencing her AND she left her business and didn't serve her first time customer for a LEISURE TRIP!!!! She acted like she was gave some huge discount or the cake for free. This cake was $80.00 freaking dollars. when I made the comment about this not being a 'hook up' cake, she called me and said that she felt 'attacked' by me, and offended. I expressed to her that I am the customer, I should be upset. She left! Then she said that she was in front of her business for an 10 extra minutes, which is a lie because you cant park directly in front of her business. But if she WAS there, she would have seen my husband standing at her door. We went back and forth until she HUNG up on me. I didn't curse, I didn't call her any names. I definitely had my voice raised, but had every right. She was about to ruin my son's birthday for a LEISURE TRIP. She then dropped the cake off at a neutral location, which also kills me, because if she had time to all of that, then she could have waited 2 minutes. I wouldn't even be typing this review if she waited 2 WHOLE MINUTES. Actually I would have, because the cake was, by far, not to my expectations. THE CAKE The cake did not look like what I ordered. The top had visible butter knife prints. The layers were COMPLETELY uneven. The bottom and top layers were fine, but the middle two looked like the cake layers were cut on a slant and filled with frosting. SO not only was there a fiasco with getting the cake, she sold me a cake that was not fit to eat (I tried to post on google, but it appears my pictures are being flagged . I have been using Cece and her amazing cake creations for 10 YEARS now!! Not only are her cakes a work of art, they are equally delicious. Any theme or idea we have, Cece runs with it and creates amazing cakes. We've had chocolate with chocolate ganache, carrot cake with cream cheese frosting, spice cake (MY fav), banana....and every time the crowd is so pleased! People who don't like cake eat her cakes! Moist, not too sweet cake in a variety of flavors with a light buttercream frosting in many flavors to choose from. Favorite frostings include maple and white chocolate but it's all good! Cake flavors are unique from lavender to the basics. Cakes must be pre-ordered, but it's worth the wait. Discovering The Cake Lady was fate. I work downtown and walk to the Public Market often for Anodyne coffee. I noticed a beautiful cake in the window. It looked magical. Four layers-two vanilla two chocolate. Between the vanilla layers was a red filling and between the chocolate layers seemed to be-could it be?! More chocolate! I must have this magical cake. I did. I got a piece. I waited til I went back to the office as I was already going over on time for my break. Once I was safely in my cube I dug in. It was amazing. Heavenly. Fast forward from winter to spring as I'm planning my Besties bridal shower. So many details the games, the food but most importantly: THE CAKE. The most important part. I instantly remembered that heavenly cake from The Cake Lady. I immediately put on my Nancy Drew hat and sleuthed to the internet where I found her email. I described the cake to her and she knew right away what I was talking about. I asked for that cake to feed 45 people with roses with an ombré beginning with a pale pink to an ivory. It was beautiful and delicious. At the bridal shower there were gasps and many ooo's. I just didn't have a great experience at our cake tasting here. Keep in mind, we didn't end up ordering a cake, but I feel that the tasting appointment didn't go as well as I would have hoped. While I believe Karen has great talent and vision (the cakes, buttercreams, etc were delicious) she was lacking in the way of communication with us. She charges $25 for the tasting and if you book with her, that doesn't go towards your cake. We were trying to build ourselves a reasonably priced cake, but she gave us no insight to how we could get a larger cake for our money (even though I asked multiple times). No, adding a faux layer of styrofoam won't be more economical than making it out of real cake. Really?) Had she told us she charges hundreds of dollars more for fondant, we would've steered away from that. I'm not sure what the ingredients are in fondant, but I think they're pretty basic. OK I'll give you one on labor, but over $500 extra for fondant is crazy. So, then she has you create a cake and she emails you the pricing a few days later. Why can't we get it right there? Other vendors can tell you right up front. So, as anticipated, the emailed quote was way over budget, so we asked what she COULD do for our budget and she basically said "nothing." So instead of helping us create a reasonably priced cake that would fit our budget, she didn't listen and didn't explain things to us nicely (or in a way 2 humps who don't know a thing about cake would understand). She said "what?" instead of "I'm sorry I don't understand your question." While I was trying to get an idea of cost, she said "Well, everything is going to cost money" in a condescending way. Honestly, I get the whole artistry behind the cake making, but a business owner needs to know how to close a deal, and I'm pretty sure it's not by pricing yourself out of the game. read more

Both times, people raved about the cupcakes. For the most recent order, I literally called Karen 4 business days before I needed said cupcakes (called Friday, then Memorial Day weekend, needed cupcakes for Thursday. My husband and I asked Karen to make cupcakes for our wedding reception. We used the cupcakes as a feature in our centerpieces. Each guest had the choice of several different flavors. Our guests enjoyed the fact that they had so many different options. One of the things that impressed me most about the cupcakes, other than their lovely/varied designs, was the fact that they did not dry out for days after the wedding. Many cupcakes only have a shelf life of a few hours before they become dry, but not these. In addition to that, her bakery was very clean and tidy, and her staff was friendly. Finally, Karen was a pleasure to work with on a personal level. She mailed two free tickets to a bridal expo event at the Phister for my mother and I. In addition to that, she was able to work with us from overseas to make sure that everything ran smoothly before we arrived back in the States. I ordered the cake for a birthday my boyfriend and I were sharing. We could not have been more pleased. Having never tried the product, we ordered blind based on other Yelp reviews and the pictures we saw The Cake Lady's Facebook page. We could not have been more pleased with it. The cake was flavorful and moist, each layer was perfectly spaced, and the icing was perfectly balanced. We were sad to see the end of it, but look forward to ordering another cake from The Cake Lady. I'm thinking we'll do this soon in order to try the other amazing flavor combinations she has to offer. Before our wedding, my wife and I decided that we were going to use as many businesses and locations in the Bay View neighborhood of Milwaukee as possible. I'm happy to say the best wedding cake I've ever had was at my own wedding. Our cake was a four tier cake, and it was very reasonably priced, but more importantly, delicious. Karen met with us for over an hour with samples of different types of cakes, fillings and frostings and explained them to us. She asked us questions, drew sketches, looked at photos with us to help us get an idea of exactly what we wanted. The cake Karen (Cake Lady) created for my wedding shower was literally the perfect cake. I almost cried when I saw it. (I may have cried.) We had a Sheriff themed party (it's an inside joke- you kind of had to be there) and Cake Lady perfectly captured the silliness of our wedding shower weekend with the beauty of celebrating getting married. The two layer cake was adorned with the prettiest "flower crown" I've seen on a cake. The girls at the shop handmade these tiny, vivid, perfectly sculpted little blooms. We worked together 1 on 1 to design a cake that matched the details of my wedding dress and the finished product was a million times better than I had imagined! We've worked with The Cake Lady twice now. 3 years ago, Karen and her team made our gorgeous and delicious wedding cake (people still comment on how exceptionally pretty and tasty it was!) Recently Karen made us a beautiful gender reveal cake that went above and beyond our expectations. It was a busy weekend for the shop (I believe they had 6 or more weddings going on...) but they were able to squeeze us in to assure that we were satisfied and that we were able to work with them again.
