This was my second time going with a friend and I still love it! We got one extra pound of seafood along with one of their combos, which was one pound of seafood with fries and fried rice. We did the Captain's Boil sauce for all the seafood (clams, mussels, and headless shrimp). The fries were really good -- they seem to be Cavendish fries. The Cajun flavour was spicier than expected! I would get regular next time. The fried rice was also really good! So flavourful, but a little greasy. It actually started tasting like White Rabbit candy (because of all the butter?) at one point, which was funny. As for the seafood, it was delicious! So saucy and wonderful. I love the Captain's Boil sauce. Out of all the seafood types we had, I think I liked the mussels the most despite not liking mussels previously. This was way too much food for me though -- next time I will just get seafood! Service was fine -- they didn't bother us much, which was good. After hearing about the hype about this place for years, the opportunity to try finally showed up. Parking is available on the side streets. The inside looks like something out a fishing dockl, with the nets everyhwere. Despite the seafood theme, there was definitely an "Asian" touch to the menu. Evrything was battered and deep fried, and steamed rice was available as a side dish. Sizzing plate - the place was out of crawfish that day, so they substituted a mussel and a prawn. Decent quality and somewhat portion size, though the meal seemed overall more like something like of a HK cafe. I also tried the lobster fries. To be honest this wasn't worth it. I came here with 4 other friends. We arrived right after they opened at noon. We each got the lunch special: sizzling plate, Seafood Medley. It came with 2 prawns, 2 clams, 2 clayfish, 2 mussels and a choice between fried fish or chicken. I had mine with the fried fish. Because they ran out of clawfish, we got a substitute of 1 mussel and 1 prawn. I was also given a choice of sauce or flavor for my seafood. I had mine with the Captain Boil sauce which was a combination of all their sauces combined together. The food tasted good. The shrimp was not too fresh and therefore the meat got stuck to the shell. The flavor was good though. We algo got the lobster poutine to share. That was quite tasty. When I walked into the restaurant, one thing I noticed was the bleach smell. Just cane back to this restaurant and I must say they have improved their serving and have added extra health and safety in their restaurant. Servers are now separated from the people cleaning and the food is decently prepared. We ordered calamari, Lobster sandwich and the Sailor's B). I must say for the price there was a lot of seafood! I am a big fan of seafood boils but it's really hard to find a decently good one here in the lower mainland because most of them slowly disappeared over the years and in the end we are left to barely any choices. Anyways, here were what we ordered during our most recent visit; 1. Lobster bisque with garlic bread. This is something new here? First time trying this out here. Surprising it's pretty good, actually a lot better then some of the fine dining places I been there. Except for the raw green onions, so Asian. The raw green onions were really not necessary, silly garnishing idea. 2. Scallops wrapped with bacon. It was abit dry but not too bad, but as I say. Not a fan of having my bacon deep fried. 3. Mix and match (clams and mussels) with corns. It was fresh and the captains boil flavour was tasty 4. Snow crab legs with okras and sausages. It is what it is, frozen products so can't compare to live ones. Overall, there really aren't any choices for a seafood boil if you are craving for one unless there are once awhile a seafood boil special during an event at certain restaurants. Usually their combo package here is okay for its price but if you are going to order the crabs and lobsters, the bill can be pretty high. Nothing to wow about at this place and don't know if I recommend it or not, best to ask your stomach! Having been to multiple Captain's Boil locations I can definitely say the quality of their seafood is pretty consistent, and this store in particular, lives up to the expectation. We made a reservation beforehand to avoid the lines, which proved to be a good idea, as the tables were over 80% full when we arrived for Thursday dinner. We saw that they had a combo menu with pre-selected items, but we opted for the a-la-cart option because turns out lobster was cheaper than dungeness crab at the time (combo requires you to add $8 extra to substitute the crab for lobster). We also got snow crab legs, clams, 4 corns, and potato fries along with the lobster. Their captain boil sauce is definitely the best to pair with the seafood and you must get at least a little bit of spiciness to get the full flavour. They provide free water for every customer and they come to refill it quite frequently so you can eat all the spicy food you want. The seafood are served in bags like the over locations and you're supposed to eat them with your hand. They provide scissors and the crab clamp to break the shells. The seafood was really fresh and the crab shell was pretty easy to break open. The potato fries definitely lives up to the expectation in terms of the large portion size and freshly fried and extra crispy. Dip it in the Captain's Boil sauce for extra flavours. This location is a hit or miss but mostly a miss. Yesterday was my last time coming to this location. Our server was okay as she did not seem like she wanted to be there at all. Our server misheard one of the orders on the flavour but I didn't ask to switch it as I didn't realize until later. The flavouring was okay, it was mostly oil in our bags and the seafood did not taste fresh at all. It had an off taste. The captains boil lunch special with fish is the best seafood deal you can get! I love eating this and when I am craving seafood this is my go to! They have this lunch special during a special limited time during the day from like 12-4pm or so. The sizzling plate is so good! I love it when my food is hot and burns when you get the captains boil sauce (medium spicy level) that is doused in the seafood. I always choose fish because it's deep fried rather than chicken, which seems to be boiled and the teriyaki sauce for the meat is great to pour over the fish and mix together with rice. Many restaurants are on the street. Such a great location to open a restaurant on this street. I have been to this location twice with my friends and fiances. The first time was all you can eat Mussels night. The second time was lunch combo. For all you can eat Mussels dinner, three of us had 2lbs mussels each plus fries. It was awesome. The big plastics bags were full of fresh seafood. Yummy! Captain Boil's Lunch combo is another great combination. We ordered The Pirate (a set) which came with a choice of either lobster or snow crabs (I think that were the options) but we paid an additional $15 for King Crab Legs. High expectations were not met. Friend and I decided on the mussels and Dungeness crab. The meaty mussels with garlic sauce complemented well while preserving much of the ocean taste. However, the Dungeness crab left little to be desired. If I had asked for a SHELL of a crab, I'd have gone down to the beach to collect it there myself. I had thought the vast meat dissolved into the delicious boil sauce to which my very disappointed friend uttered, "Like magic?" The waitresses did not care nor come to our table even once to ask how everything was. This was not a cheap meal. Not sure if they changed where they get the corn because it is now bland and overcooked. Pickup orders during the covid situation is also a hit or miss. You have to call to let them know you have arrived or you wait until they come to the door to pickup your order. Once they were prompt and came out right away to give my order. The second time they didnt answer the phone and I stood in the heat for about 10minutes before someone finally came to the door to ask my name for picking up my order. I was kinda thrown off by the head still attached but meh, I can take the head and shells off. Something told me. Before you bite check for the vein. There it was! Now I understand this is a big seafood place... so how come they can't take the time to devein their shrimp? Some may like eating the poop from a shrimp but I do not! It blows my mind how they serve their shrimp not cleaned!!!!! They are sizeable shrimp and it wouldn't take much effort to devein the shrimp. So being utterly disappointed and disgusted I called up the restaurant and asked for a refund. The manager told me that's how they cook their shrimp and they can't offer me a refund as it's "not an issue" I'm sorry... if eating shit isn't an issue I don't know what is... anywho... with the manager talking over me and not listening to me I got livid! We ordered the Captains Boil seasoning. It's my favourite out of the four choices. The prices are a tad on the high side. My son and I did a double take when they told us that their current price for the Lobster is $49.99 / lb.. I said, "Excuse me? ... $14.99?" and she repeated, "no ... $49.99". So a bit of gouging there IMO. We did ordered the lobster thinking for $50 it will be massive in size ... well ... it definitely had BIG flavour ... Service is sloooooooooooow and unorganized. There was no Rhyme or Reason on how things were done. Three people were cleaning tables while the line up to pay was ignored. People were walking in to eat, and we didn't see them taking down names. Sort of like, "whose next?". I asked for ice water three times before I got it. We needed extra bibs and didn't get it until three requests later. Seems like three is the magic number? The only reason my review is three stars is because of the crazy amount of plastic this restaurant used. Plastic cups, straws, bibs, gloves. Even the food was served in a plastic bag. Recently, Vancouver has seen a rise in the number of seafood boils in town. It's not hard to understand why... Vancouver has access to a lot of great seafood and we're always on the lookout for new food trends. The Captain's Boil, a chain from back east, set up shop in Richmond last year and has now opened up a location in Vancouver at Kingsway and Joyce. Given this location being much more accessible for us, we dropped by at the end of December to try them out and see what the whole hype was about. The menu, and concept, is pretty simple... you pick your protein, your flavour, spice level, and add any sides that you like. Each diner gets a plastic bib and gloves and they bring out your seafood in baggies... meant to keep things a little cleaner. The table is covered with a brown paper sheet so you could, if you wanted to, dump all of your seafood out on the table and enjoy a more traditional seafood boil. It would make for a better picture than leaving the seafood in their little baggies but it would also be so much messier. Since this restaurant had just opened, they had a big sign saying they were still training and working out the kinks (in so many words). I'd have to agree that they have a lot to work on here. We wound up ordering a pound each of Crawfish ($15.95/lb), Shrimp ($12.95/lb), Clams ($12.95/lb), and Mussels ($10.95/lb). We also ordered two pieces of corn ($1 per piece), lotus root slices ($6.95), sausages ($6.95), steamed rice ($2), and pop ($2). If you've never been to a seafood boil before, it can be a little daunting to try and figure out how much you need to order. We found that we ordered the perfect amount to be completely full at the end of our meal. However, I feel like they need more options for the uninitiated (something like a combo which had a little bit of different seafood). As it was, they wound up getting our order wrong, even after confirming it. When we told them of their mistake, they didn't now what to do. To fix our order, they wound up giving us the bag of crawfish that they previously given to another table by mistake (we could tell because the crawfish were colder than rest of our seafood and we had overheard the other table complaining that their order was wrong too). In terms of the food itself, it comes out very quick. The menu prices looked like they had already been changed since they opened and I felt the prices were a bit expensive given the limited amount of work they need to do here. The crawfish really wasn't worth it as there was almost no meat inside and they were difficult to pry open. I preferred the shrimp, clams, and sausages of the bunch and thought that the lotus root slices were cut too thick. We stuck with a medium heat which wasn't overly spicy at first but we found that the heat builds in your mouth over time. Despite the gloves and bib, eating at a seafood boil is really messy and I found that the gloves developed holes from the sharp points of the crawfish. At the end of our meal, they wound up overcharging us as well. While some of the seafood here was okay, I probably wouldn't bother coming back as it seems overpriced for what you get... definitely nothing glamorous about eating here and getting covered in seafood sauce. read more

The crab was illegally small, I guess when you are not paying per lb they use illegally caught crabs. Really bad business practice. The crab was over cooked. The mussels were frozen and non edible, it was like eating rubber. The clam were fresh and ok, just really really small. Frozen shrimp with the poo vein attached and watch out for those who like to suck the heads, the black inedible brain sack is there. Captains boils sauce was tasty but we were all very thirsty afterwards. Over cooked okra to the point when you grab one it was all slimy and gooey. It was extremely disappointing all the plastic bags that were used. It takes 10-1000 years for plastic bags to decompose. Every item came in a separate doubled plastic bag. By the end of the meal there was a huge pile of plastic bags. Even my mom complained and she could care less about the environment. Total $164.. and we left the uneaten mussels behind. Frankly, I'd love it if they had plates and utensils provided. Service was quite non-existent. We had to call their attention several times to place our order, to follow-up my rice order and to get the bill. Despite the reviews friends really wanted to go try this newly opened seafood restaurant. The seafood was really fresh and the prices were very reasonable for their seafood. We ordered king crab legs and wow it was full of meat, and full of flavor. As we had a group of 6 we made a reservation, they will only take reservations when group sizes are larger than 6. We sat near the server's so we had good service as they were quick to check on us for refills and to clean up our tables. All the seafood we ordered we good, fresh and flavorful. If you can't eat spicy don't order the mild, that one does have a kick and my friends couldn't handle it. But, it gives it a good nice kick:) As for the server's sometimes they didn't know which flavor they were bringing to us... So it was a self taste and figure it out! This is a decent seafood place to get your hands dirty, but their crawfish have very little to almost no meat. I had the Sizzling Plate combo ($10.95) which came with fish, crawfish, shrimp and clams. The deep-fried fish was unfortunately very salty, but the fish itself (Cod?) would be fine if it wasn't so salty. The crawfish was only for show as I extracted only about 1 gram of meat for two crawfish. The shrimp and the clams were good with the Captain's Boil sauce which was made with cajun, garlic sauce and lemon pepper and it was quite spicy for medium spicy. I ended up with dirty hands even with their plastic gloves, but each table had a big roll of paper towels. read more

Used yelp and google found this restaurant with shrimp boil and we loved the flavor and service was good.

I was excited to try their lobster roll lunch special. Unfortunately, it wasn't anything special. The lobster portion was lost among a large piece of bacon and you almost needed a magnifying glass to find it. I don't think there was even an ounce of lobster. The lobster bisque was worse. It was all liquid and lacked any seafood. The only redeeming thing was the half decent fries, but I wasn't there for the fries. I think they should take this off their menu as it definitely didn't resemble the advertised picture. For a birthday lunch, it was bitterly disappointing. read more

Food is good going in, bad coming out. My wife and I have been to the Richmond location three times and had no problems. We have been to this location twice and she's thrown up twice. I almost threw up this time too but refused to throw up $30 something dollars worth of food as a principle. I still taste the sauce today (the morning after). Don't think we'll go back to this location. It seems like the sauce is stronger here than in Richmond. At least the service is decent here. read more
