We live in Colorado. My son is about to turn 16 and we've been planning for more than a year to find his first car in another state and drive it home together as a father-son road trip. So you can imagine finding a car that is as good and reliable as advertised is paramount. We'd been looking for months for a good, low-mileage '05 VW Golf GTI (my son's most-desired car). Bernard, The Car Finder, posted one on Car Gurus and we were just lucky enough to be one of the first people to see it. 77K original miles on a 16-year old car. I called the number on the listing and spoke with Bernard. Right away, it was clear something was different about him. He was very open and honest about any flaws the car had (faded paint on the roof, sagging headliner, etc.), but intimated that the car was in fantastic shape mechanically, other than needing a battery, which he said he would replace no matter what. The mechanical aspects were what we cared about most since we would have a 1,300-mile drive ahead of us after picking up the car. We asked if we could have a pre-purchase inspection and Bernard was happy to deliver the car wherever we wanted it to be looked at by a mechanic. I don't know about you, but I've asked that of other car sellers (dealer and private) and been met with indignant outrage at that request. We had the car inspected and the only issues the mechanic came back with were the faded paint, interior, and battery issues I mentioned above. We very quickly came to a mutually agreeable price in the most pleasant exchange of offers I've ever experienced. He was trusting with us about Fedex-ing a cashier's check and let us know when it was received. Our flight out to Pleasanton just happened to fall on Father's Day weekend, which made the trip all the more special for me and my son. The Details: After my first experience with buying a car from a used car dealership(where the check engine light literally turned on around the corner from my driving off the lot), I had completely sworn myself off from doing it again. But The Car Finder had a rare Toyota Tacoma truck with the exact specifications I was looking for (TRD, Rear Diff Lockers,6-Speed, low miles, the works) so i told myself I would take a look but didn't hold my breath. First came my call in, I asked for some details on the car. Bernard went through a thorough history about what he knew about the car(carafax, origin, etc). Told me the services he had done on it, and what I may want to consider doing in the future, being that it was a used car. Then he went on to tell me about every little scuff and ding that he could see. After his description, I figured it was worth the drive to check it out. When i got there, I couldn't even find the scuffs and dings he had told me about, they were that small and this guy is strangely that honest. Now, I was still expecting the typical pushy car sales guy and was ready with my guard up, but that guy was nowhere to be found. Bernard handed me the keys, told me to take my time, feel free to come to him with any questions, and even let me take it for a spin around the block on my own. Didn't take long for me to realize the car was exactly what I was looking for but I needed to go to a bank and get financed. Best experience ever. You worry about small auto dealers, but don't fear these guys. I'm a student, no income, had to dumb my old ride. These guys put me into a great ride. Almost no haggling, and they still knocked the price back a decent amount. I got into a car that was right at the Blue Book Value. Like many others here, I have nothing but praise for Bernard and his operation - he made the whole process painless, even enjoyable (something I have never experienced with car buying), and has a well deserved reputation for high integrity and professionalism. I had been looking for a good condition Jetta VR6, and Bernard alerted me he had found one - outstanding condition, 62k miles on a 2001, two owners, all options, very rare - I don't know where he finds these things. He was completely transparent about the car's history, showed me the actual inspection reports, allowed a long test drive incl back roads as well as freeway, all with no pressure to buy or game playing. He is clearly an enthusiast as well as an expert, buys cars he personally would own/drive, and is genuinely concerned about customer satisfaction. I was quite convinced the car was as solid as advertised. We did an amicable deal on the spot that covered everything incl DMV and all paperwork/fees. He offered a warranty (which we both knew was unnecessary but again showed his sincerity), he took a $100 deposit and said he would personally deliver the car to my home in a couple days when I had the cheque for the full amount. On driving it over he called and said he had spotted a tiny coolant drip/leak and wanted to investigate before handing it over. They investigated, found some minor weeping around the thermostat housing, replaced the gasket (free of charge) and drove it round the next day. How many car dealers do you know who would go to that trouble? Like many I have come to hate the whole dealer BS thing, which it why it's so refreshing to find such a classy operation as Bernard's. It's been said in other reviews, but yes, Bernard is on a whole other level when it comes to car sales ! I spent a lot of time looking for a car, scrolling through shady CL ads, with even weirder people on the other end of the ad. I was not really inclined to go with a car dealer, as I had just avoided a odometer rollback fraud on a previous purchase (removed 100k miles from it), so I was a pretty scared about any potential rip-off/lemon sale. First, this was the first and only car dealer I found that only had completely satisfied reviews on any website I could check. A lot of others one had 3 stars at best, with some obviously fake reviews, and several serious complaints on engine blowing up 50 miles after the purchase and other similar. Second, you get to deal directly with the salesman/owner/manager, as they're the same person. Way much easier to talk to, and really nice to make sure you don't get different info or explanations every time you call... Finally, Bernard was just awesome on the whole process. He met with us like a day or 2 after I called him about the car, on a weekend morning because we had limited availability. He was honest upfront about the minor repairs that had to be done on the car (including some that I would have been pretty likely to miss during the pre-purchase inspection), detailed the pros and cons associated with this specific model. He was then willing to work a bit on the price, took care of all the paperwork regarding the DMV and such (car dealers are normally required to take care of that, but a lot will be reluctant to it or only take care of it halfway ..). He also provided (without us having to ask) a complete Carfax report (all dealers have "free" Carfax, but some won't be as willing to share it or as transparent ..), as well as a very recent and detailed inspection report on the car, showing the recent maintenance replacement that had been done as well as the current condition of the other parts) Then it gets even better : one of the part that had to be replaced ended up taking more time to get delivered to Bernard. He told me about it, and offered to have the car delivered to me (which is pretty awesome), at no cost ! I accepted, and a few weeks later, when the part finally arrived, he told me about it and arranged to send one of his employees to pick up my car from my house, AND leave me a replacement vehicle so I'm not left with no car while he takes care of it. I was already amazed by the lever of customer service I was getting (the final sale was about 7k $, so I'm not exactly the highest paying or most fancy customer you could expect), and as I had a small issue (humming noise) with the stereo, I figured I'd ask Bernard to see if he was able to check it out, or could recommend someplace to take it to and have it fixed. He got back to me pretty quick and told me than one of the speaker was torn, and that he had already ordered a replacement, at no cost ! When I got the car back a couple days later, Bernard told me that he hasn't been able to replace the speaker as it took longer than planned to arrive, and instead wrote me a check so that I can get it replaced. I'm not gonna share the check's amount, but it was way more than enough to have the speaker changed at any shop, or to basically replace all the speakers myself ! He even apologized for not having washed the car before returning it to me, and added some cash so that I can have it cleaned as well (and the car had some light dust on it here and there, it wasn't like covered in mud or anything) ! I'm more than satisfied with my experience of buying a car from Bernard, and would definitely recommend the car finder to anyone looking to buy a car "troublefree". On a side note, I had to take the car to 2 different shops since the purchase to fix "random" issues (O2 sensor and blown hose, not exactly the kind of issue you can see ahead of time..), both told me that the car was in great condition given the mileage. Bernard did told me that the previous owners were a couple of elderly people who used to tow the car behind their RV, thus adding a lot of miles to the car without really driving it. I wasn't really willing to believe the story, as it mostly seemed like a good sales argument that could apply to roughly any car, but given that different non affiliated shops were impressed enough to tell me about it, I'm starting to wonder why I even doubted Bernard ! Finally, I'm on my way back to the Car Finder today : I wanted to get a remote key for the car, brand's dealer were asking about 200 (100 for the key, another 100 for programming as they're the only ones that can do it). Asked to Bernard if he could help out, he ordered the key for me, didn't charged me for it given the small price, and I'm on my way there to have it programmed.
