A lot has changed around the airport, but National continues to deliver the same dependable experience that made me a fan in the first place. Tampa has shifted all rental cars to a separate facility that you reach by shuttle train. The ride takes about five minutes, it runs smoothly, and in the handful of times I have used it, I have never had a delay or a hiccup. It is an easy, predictable part of the arrival routine. National is simple to find, and as an Emerald Aisle member, I still get to bypass the counter and head straight to the garage. I used to be Executive, but I am regular Emerald now, which means choosing from a slightly lower tier. That was not a problem today. For this visit, I specifically wanted a minivan and had my pick of at least a dozen, walking right past a row of SUVs and sedans to get the most boring and generic one with a Florida tag. Exiting the facility and heading to downtown was just as smooth. A friendly agent checked my ID, waved me through, and I was on the road within moments. The van itself was spotless, had fewer than 2000 miles, and ran without a single issue for the entire week. Returning the car was equally straightforward. The signage is clear, the lanes are well marked, and the whole process moves quickly. I had the email with my final receipt before I even stepped back onto the train to the terminal. National at Tampa continues to be a reliable choice for me, and I expect to keep renting from them whenever I fly through TPA. [Review 44 of 2026 - 2228 in Florida - 25234 overall]

Remember the old saying you get what you pay for? We arrived in Fort Lauderdale and went to the location to catch the shuttle. When the shuttle driver arrived, we waited for all passengers to exit the shuttle before attempting to board. We were literally yelled at by the shuttle driver telling us "get off the shuttle, until your bags have been loaded". Once our bags were loaded, and we were allowed to board the shuttle, there was a young family traveling with their children. The mother and her children were in the back of the shuttle, and the father was told that he would have to wait for the next shuttle rather than offering him, the passenger seat upfront. The young man explained that his family was on the shuttle already and they needed to travel together. The driver was reluctant, but eventually let the man ride in the passenger seat. On our way to the car rental facility, the very rude shuttle driver in a very negative attitude told all of us that Ft Lauderdale was extremely busy due to it being spring break and that Ft Lauderdale had approximately an extra 500,000 people visiting the area. He said " if any of you plan to leave next Friday, keep in mind that the cruise ships will de bark on that day and that airports and shuttle services will be extremely busy". . He also said "if you want to go to the beach, you better get there very early". The man in the passenger seat ask why and the shuttle driver said "well if you expect to get a place at the beach, you better go early". He had the worst attitude and was negative from the beginning of the time he picked us up until the time he dropped us off. Now for our experience at the rental center. There was a family of about eight people who were at the counter when we arrived in Carwiz's small waiting room. They were told because they were late, Their reservation had been canceled. Leaving them stranded. The only thing the company was able to do was separate them and give them two different vehicles. While all of this was going on, my husband was told to go to a phone booth to complete his rental with a virtual agent. We were aware that we needed additional insurance coverage and contacted our State Farm representative prior to the rental to increase our coverage to the required $300,000 policy. However,Carwiz told us that they do not see proof that we have $300,000 of property damage insurance and we were required to purchase it from.Carwiz which was an additional $389 on top of our rental. We told them that we had this coverage and that we could get our insurance company on the phone to confirm and they would not allow this. The only thing they were willing to do was charge us the $389 additional coverage or they could cancel our reservation. We felt as though we were stuck between a rock and a hard place. On top of that, there was a young mother who was traveling with her teenage autistic daughter, a third grader and a first grader. The lady was scheduled to pick up her vehicle at 2 PM and arrived at the car rental on our shuttle at 2:03 PM. Carwiz would not rent her the minivan that she had reserved and canceled her reservation. This lady was brought to tears by the workers at Carwiz. She even tried to explain to them that she waited an hour and a half for her shuttle to pick them up and have they came to get her. She would've been there by the 2 o'clock i comforted her to not let this experience spoil her vacation. The more I thought about the scam of the additional $389. I continued to research why I was being charged this extra coverage when we already have it. Nothing I can find shows you are required to have $300,000 of property damage insurance. I plan to continue to investigate what I believe is criminal activity of forcing us to take this insurance. In addition, the midsize car that we were given was a Toyota Corolla with over 149,000 miles, the car exterior had several scratches and dents, the interior looked as though someone had spilled coffee on the ceiling of the car, the outlet to plug in your phone for charging was just simply gone and the clear cover where the speedometer was located was all scratched up around We were in Fort Lauderdale for seven days. My husband received a text message telling them that the office had moved and that we needed to take it back to a different location. We showed up that morning at 7:09 AM. No one was there to receive the car back or provide us a receipt. We waited for the shuttle and when it finally came, it was the same guy who had picked us up the Friday before. We expressed our concerns to him and he replied., "he hears these kind of complaints all the time and that we are all free to make our own choices so next time he said ma'am, you may want to rent somewhere else"

So what really don't like to leave bad reviews because it impacts the employees' livelihood, but…read morethe inexpensive price of their rentals is just not worth the hassle. They try to up sell a lot of the add-ons - Now I get it that they probably make a commission on this, but the way the guy did it was a bit off putting. The car I rented sat for a few days because I was at a retreat. When I went to drive it again, the low tire pressure light came on. It didn't look that low, so I drove it to a nearby gas station to get air. I called roadside assistance twice. The first time I was on hold for 20 minutes. The second time no one ever picked up. I decided to chance it and drove back to the airport to get a different car, which was nerve racking because I wasn't sure if the tire would give out while. They were nice about swapping out the car and car me an upgrade. I asked for some compensation because I had to cancel all my vacation plans for my last day of my vacation and they offered not to charge me for any gas. When I dropped off the car the next day, I asked again to be sure and there was a $20 gas charge on there. I asked them to take it off. It was a different manager , and he said he did and they would email me my receipt. I never received the receipt, so I called customer service to get one, and of course when I looked on it, they had charged me $81.00 for prepaid gas. Which I didn't want in the first place. I called back and was told that I had to wait until Monday business hours to talk to billing, which is BS because when I finally got through, it was someone in the Philippines. They do that to make it difficult to get a refund. The manager never put a note in the reservation saying that he would refund me so the agent said he had to reach out to him to confirm that he said that... So what are the odds I'm gonna get this money back? Who knows. But even if I do, I can't get all this time I've wasted dealing with this back. On the car rental websites, their reviews are much higher which makes me feel like they are not real reviews. I've rented from Sixt a few times and had much better luck with them Don't bother with this company, not worth the hassle. And to never have someone pick up on the emergency roadside assistance number? What would I have done if I hadn't been able to drive the car? I'd still be sitting there!!
