We've seen multiple vets there and I've had good experiences with pretty much all of them when one of my cat was diagnosed with cancer, I really appreciated that they didn't just recommend the expensive chemo route but gave me various options for him based on where his health was at that time. The option they gave us and we went with bought us a little more time with him. The Cat Hospital is a unique veterinarian clinic where cats feel welcome and comfortable. My 2 cats always got good care there. I've remained close to the staff there even after my boys passed away. Last year the original owner sold the business after decades and went to work elsewhere. We all wondered how it was gonna go... Well my neighbor continues to bring her cat and is very happy with her doctor and the staff. It's been a little over a year now. I recently took a tour of the facility. It has gone through a refresh. The "new" owner has stepped up the standard of care by installing updated state-of-the-art equipment and by extending the available services such as doing lab work on-site rather than having to send it out and wait and having immediate access to ultrasound services when needed rather than delaying until an outside consultant could come in. I have multiple complaints about this place. When calling, you are put on hold or disconnected. When you finally do get through, they are rude, and annoyed. After playing "phone tag" and finally getting an appointment for my cat's concern I was told to drop her off between the hours of 8-9. I arrived a little bit after 8am. First phone call at 12:50 from the vet giving them authorization to care for my cat. Second/final call before 4pm from the vet explaining what care they provided and at the end of our conversation, she said my cat bit the vet tech when waking up from anesthesia/sedation. Vet tech was ok, my cat bit their index finger and was told they were going to urgent care. I felt awful. I apologized but I know how people respond when waking up from anesthesia so I can only imagine they must have policies in place to follow to ensure staff is safe and practice with safety and caution in mind at all times. I was told to pick her up at 4:30. I was there at 4:30. Reception staff was very rude, unprofessional and extremely overwhelmed. Definitely under staffed. I sat patiently. Witnessed verbally on how they spoke to other clients and how they spoke to each other voicing their frustration of being stretched so thin. Finally at 5:50 it was my turn to pay, get meds and discharge instructions by the overwhelmed staff. I paid a huge bill and we left home. Cat was there over 10 hours! On Tuesday morning knock on my door, Animal Services paid a visit to check on my cat and to report the incident. It would've been nice if they would've given me a heads up this was going to happen per protocol. I understand as I am a nurse. I was blindsided. Anyways, they need major huge improvements in customer service and hiring more staff as they are extremely busy. Some training to the employees on how to respond when feeling overwhelmed, overworked or stressed out. Do not take it on the customer. She conducts exams. She has great distraction techniques. My kittens did not even notice the shots. Absolutely unacceptable experience -- avoid this place at all costs. I brought my cat here after waiting nearly a month for a grooming appointment I booked over the phone (haircut, wash, nail trim, etc.). On the day of the appointment, I dropped off my cat and heard nothing for 8 hours. I finally went in to check what was happening, and they casually told me it would be another 30 minutes. When they finally returned my cat, they had only done a nail trim and a basic wash -- nothing else, even though the main reason I came was for her hair issue. No explanation, no apology, just a rushed response. To make things worse, the receptionist -- I believe her name was Fatima -- was shockingly rude and unprofessional. I simply asked for clarification, and she responded with sarcasm and a terrible attitude, as if I was bothering her by asking about my own pet. Apparently, my cat was kept in a cage for 8 hours, with no food, no updates, and basically no care provided. This is not how any animal -- or customer -- should be treated. Reply to the owner: no one has called me. This is one of the most recommended "affordable" veterinary clinics when you look up dental extractions for cats in the Bay Area on Reddit. However, the receptionist who answers the phones is probably going to change anyone's mind from coming here. I have been taking my cats to the cat hospital since they first opened in 1977. unfortunately I am very unhappy with them now as they have grown too big I guess and you can't get an appointment even for for an emergency. Some time should be left on the schedule every day for such emergencies. The personal service they used to offer is no longer. I have rescued and loved 18 cats over the last 48 years and have always taken them to the Cat Hospital but I will be looking for another provider now. Even though I pleaded with them today to see my 20-year-old cat who is experiencing an emergency they were unable to accommodate me, nor would they even recommend another place I could take her. I'm puzzled by the positive reviews as our experience was just indescribably bad. Based on the glowing reviews and the clinic's specialization in feline care, we decided to take our 3 beloved rescue cats (whom we've nurtured since they were 3 weeks old) for their checkups and vaccinations in July 2022. We had consecutive appointments for each of them. The front desk appeared disorganized, impatient and irritated, rarely making eye contact. Not a great first impression, but we were already there. After a 15-20 minute wait, I went back with the cats to see the vet. Shanna Compton displayed a brusque and outright contemptuous demeanor as I attempted to make conversation in the awkward silence. She seemed excessively rushed, and at no point demonstrated the slightest warmth or kindness. I wondered if she was put off because she thought we were late? We were not, although our appointment time was delayed due to the wait. I've had many furry companions and known several vets, but never have I experienced anyone acting like this. It was uncomfortable to say the least. The worst part comes last. Although all cats had exams, Ms. Compton didn't note or mention anything about our female cat's heart. 7 weeks later, Sunny had to be put to sleep due to a saddle thrombus: a blood clot that blocks the main artery (aorta) which supplies blood to the hind limbs. This leads to a sudden paralysis of the hind legs and very severe pain. We would've spent any amount of money and done anything to save her, but she had lost circulation in 3 limbs and the ER vets said her pain was difficult to control; a fine line between giving enough pain medication and stopping her breathing. She was not quite 8 years old and the sweetest cat one could ever know. Her 2 brothers miss her, looked for her for months. Our hearts are broken by her sudden and sad demise. I know that a cat with heart disease might have a heart murmur or rhythm problem that a veterinarian would hear upon examination, but possibly not. I can't blame Sunny's death on The Cat Hospital, but I can wish that Shanna Compton would have been more kind, diligent, slowed her pace and perhaps listened to Sunny's heart. It was a checkup appointment after all. If she reads this, maybe the next cat parents who visit this clinic with their beloved companions will have a better experience. read more

My husband and I live in the SF east bay each winter. We always visit a friend in Carmel, and can't take our cat there, so we leave her for a couple of days at The Cat Hospital in Campbell. She has stayed there for several winters, and we have been impressed with the staff, facility, boarding. I do have one concern, though. The front desk people do not ask for an up-to-date vaccination record, and they don't ask when the last dose of a flea product has been administered. We boarded her in March 2025 and she came home with fleas. She is an indoor-only cat and we have never seen a flea on her. Number 1....great place to take your kitty for boarding Number 2...we would continue to board her there if they were more conscientious about expecting documentation on up-to-date vaccinations and if they checked every cat boarding for fleas before putting the cat into a kennel. I have had nothing but great experiences here. Their check ups, vaccinations, and grooming are all decently priced. My cat has has been here about 2/3 times and we have had great experiences every single time. Since our cat is not the best at the vet, she has to be sedated before coming in or at the clinic. They made sure in asking us before hand if we sedated her with cbd or their own prescribed drug. Our cat gets their vaccinations and grooming all under the influence and it makes it a better experience for us all . The flea medication they have on site is a bit on the pricier side though, it was around $80 for a 3 month supply. However, I do have to acknowledge that it worked really well and was an easy application so I would actually get it again. read more

Around November 2022, we saw that my cat, Jacob was not eating and he was losing lots of weight. We thought it was maybe depression. Around December, he was still not getting better so we decided to take him to the vet to get him check out. We wanted to take him to the Cat Hospital at first but there was any sooner appointment until the end of January so I was searching for other animal hospital that has sooner appointment. I took him to Happy Valley Hospital and they found that he has a tumor on his stomach. They give me two options: 1) get a sample of the tumor before an diagnostic and 2) euthanasia. I chose to take him home and look for other animal hospitals to get a second opinion. I paid them $530 and they did not do anything. This includes the exam, sedation and ultrasound. On Thursday, I call the Cat Hospital to tried to get him an appointment. I told the receptionist that he has a tumor on his stomach and that his original appointment is January 24. They were super helpful to be able to schedule him the next day on Friday. On Friday, we told him in and Dr. Shanker examined him and said that he do have mass on his abdomen and that they need to do an ultrasound to determine where it is before they proceed with an surgery. On Wednesday, we took him for the ultrasound. Than on Friday, he went in for surgery. On Friday, Dr. Shanker call me and said that he has masses on both of his intestines and wasn't sure if he will survive with a large portion of his intestines removed. He told me that I should think about euthanasia. I told him to proceed with the surgery and I'm so glad I did. I'm so glad that I tried to save him because he is happy and running around like he used to. When he came home from the hospital, he wasn't eating but he was eating really good the next day. It has been 1 week since he got his stitches removed. I am thankful to Dr. Shanker and his team for saving his life. PS I created a gofundme page to help me support his surgery bills. read more

It is impossible to get an appointment the same week you call them, even for an emergent situation. I was told today to find another vet if I can't wait a week for an appointment. TLDR: my lap cats were labeled as dangerous; the environment in this facility is completely stressful; Dr Shanker is not a great communicator, a bit rude, and honestly doesn't seem to really know how to work with cats either. Beware of business owners who respond aggressively to their 1 star reviews without demonstrating any ownership/accountability for their misses. I have two ~16 month old cats (1 each boy and girl) who I dropped here for their first year booster shots. They always welcome the housekeeper, repairmen, neighbors etc when they visit; they're sweet, not mean or skittish at all. These two are bonded, when I dropped them off I suggested they be kept together. Dr Shanker called me 5 hours after drop off with a nearly incomprehensible voicemail saying both cats were being too difficult and they couldn't give them their shots or exams. I left work early and went over there to see what was happening. They asked that I go to the back and get the cats out of their cages because they're too vicious. My girl cat saw me and immediately started crying and asking for pets. The boy was in the back of his cage and he looked completely freaked out, with a sign that read "danger" on his cage. I reached in there and he gave me a sniff and started rubbing his face on my hand. After we got to the exam room, and a silly long wait for Dr Shanker to come out of his office, girl cat had her exam. Then another long wait for her shots. Boy cat was mostly calmed down and rubbing on everyone's legs. After yet another wait, Dr came in and left the door wide open with my cat loose, and then walked through my cat, stepping on him. He let out a yowl and the Dr said "are we going to be friends?" Well no, not if you keep kicking and stepping on him. Part of me wonders if they were rough with him like this earlier in the day. Yes he was not happy to be examined and poked, but no one bled. Dr seemed arrogant, and I felt like he was purposefully keeping us waiting in the exam room for long periods. Regardless of intent or competence, I think the drop off option here is a good idea on paper but poorly executed. The cats are put in small kennels in a single room, many of them are crying, and the staff is running around completely disorganized and crazy busy. It's a high stress environment with the humans who work there, I feel it myself when I walk in. I'll give them a star because the vet techs were nice, and they honestly didn't understand why the "morning crew" had labeled my cats as dangerous. But we're finding a new vet. read more

Took our baby Jaspurr here for a checkup for the first time since we moved to Campbell. He is 10 years old with no health issues, but we figured it was time for his vaccinations to be renewed and have a wellness exam. The Cat Hospital had good reviews, and we wanted to take our cat to a place that we know would give him specialized care. The staff made it really easy to schedule an appointment over the phone. They had to call to reschedule since the Dr would not be in on that day, but they were able to get us in shortly after. When we arrived, my bf, cat, and I were a little nervous. You know how it is, car rides with a cat can be stressful for everyone. The waiting room seemed inviting and the staff were friendly. They got us into a room right away so we could wait where it was quiet. The Dr was very kind and explained what she was doing for each part of the checkup. They took Jaspurr in the back for his shots and then brought him right out again. Price seemed pretty standard, around $300 for a checkup & shots. My cat was suffering from liver failure after another vet put him on too much medication. We needed to find him a new vet, but all the places we wanted to take him were fully booked so we gave the Cat Hospital a try and we're so glad we did because they saved his life and given that they only see cats, it was clear they really know how to handle cats. We got Dr. Compton and she was great about answering our questions and communicating with us about our cat's condition. She walked us through our options and advised us on tests that he absolutely needed and ones we could adopt a wait and see approach with. In the end, we just needed to get his appetite going again to restart his liver. The Cat Hospital is fantastic and I expected an operation this size to be more expensive, but it was less expensive than his previous vet who wasn't doing him any favors. read more

Took our cat in to get his teeth cleaned (it couldn't be performed because my boy is a bit spicy) and needed to be pre sedated which we will do next time. The doctor was super informative and gave us all of our options. Staff incredibly friendly as well. I took my cats here growing up as a kid and we will be coming back moving forward. I brought my cat to TCH because he was having trouble peeing. I'd taken him to TCH once before for a checkup. This time though... Dropping him off on a Thursday went fine, and a vet called shortly after I left to let me know that they would be doing urinalysis which needs to be processed off-site, and I'd get the results Tuesday. When I'd pick him up I'd be sent home with prescription food. Cool. All good up to this point. The next day I go to pick him up, and both I and the receptionist forget about the food. Which is a bummer because I was sent home with a kitty that needed special food, but they were closed for the weekend while I didn't have that food. So Monday I call and drove from Mountain View just for the food, and I didn't get so much as a "sorry." I get that I could have remembered, but I tried asking the receptionist some questions and she (1) clearly couldn't hear me and (2) was clearly pretending to be able to. I'm confident had she said, "sorry could you repeat that?" instead of assuming I'd asked a stupid question, that I would not have forgotten. Tuesday comes and goes, no lab results. I call and am curtly told that *they'll* call *me* when they have the lab results. Ok... they *never* called. I eventually called again (SUPER stressed about it) and was kept on hold for more than 20 minutes. They kept putting me back on hold every four minutes, and eventually, I asked to leave a message. I explained that I wanted the lab results and the prescription sent to Petco. When they called back I was on another call, but they left a voicemail saying that they'd already given me the lab results and to call them back. Uh, no, I'm not getting on a phone call for someone who screwed up to just gaslight me. I tried to email them but they don't have email - this is common for people who want to be able to say things without being held accountable. I get making a mistake, stuff happens. I don't get having ZERO follow-up from them after more than a month and rudely told me not to call them. I got absolutely zero impression that they believed that after I left Friday, that was the end of our interactions. Clearly, they screwed up. This has been such a stressful experience that I regret getting cats. I love them so much, but February was basically just stress for me, the entire time waiting to hear back that they had to do extra testing because of something awful, or something. I expected support from TCH but instead, they were an emotional burden. I really, really tried with them, but if my only option is to wait on hold just to be lied to, I'd rather find another vet. read more

I love this place! I brought in 3 of my family's cat this week for annual check ups. I normally take them to another animal clinic, but decided to switch bc the doctor wasn't nice to my cats. I have two very calm cats and one slightly aggressive, a girl. She always had to been sedated for her check ups which I felt was unnecessary (I felt the other doctor just wanted to make extra money) so the cat hospital recommended gabapentin to help calm her. It worked perfectly, my a little aggressive girl was calm and did so good at her appointment! Dr. Compton was so kind and helpful. She reassured all my kitties and was very gentle with them. He was in pain and to badly hurt to survive. he needed to be peacefully put to sleep so he wouldn't suffer a slow painful exit. Lotta bent over backwards to make sure we could get in immediately and get him help. They were the only vet office of the dozen or so I called that had this response and concern. I love these people. Now we have a kitten that will be getting neutered and vaccinated on Friday. I am glad to take him to a place that is there for kitties whether it is a cute kitten that is getting ready for his new home or whether it is a tragic little semi feral kitty that was hit by a car. These folks really know cats. Sooo many other vets have shown ignorance of basic cat behavior. It's refreshing and comforting to take my purring fur babies somewhere that truly understands kitties. read more

I try to stay away from making very negative reviews, but after having my own horrible experience with Dr Gonzales today and then seeing comments confirming that it was not only me that she has such a condescending attitude with, I feel like this is warranted. I've been taking my cat to the cat hospital for over three years and continued to make the drive there after moving to the east side of San Jose. The way Dr Gonzales speaks to pet owners is 100% unacceptable. I have had multiple conversation with her the past few months in order to help my kitty and each time I hang up the phone with a bad taste in my mouth. From her over use of medical jargon to the lack of compassion for pet owners who do not have a surplus of funds to spend on their cat, she is NOT a vet I will continue to see and I encourage you to request a different doctor if you are taking your cat here. Dr Shanker has always been a joy to speak with regarding my cats health and I understand why he is in such high demand. I hope that Dr Gonzales can take some of this feedback and apply it to her future clients. read more

Racist front desk staff! I came in to dropped off my cat for spay. I wrote my name down on the check in sheet and waited for the front desk staff to call me. I sat there The old lady works in front desk finally called me. She asked "Amber?"I answered "yes!" and stood up. I was not sure if she hear me or not but I was pretty sure she saw me standing up already. She ignored me and turn her face away to ask another lady "Are you Amber?" I was wondering if she was just double checking. Then I walked toward the front desk to let her know I am here. she looked at me and called me "Lin" Then she asked me to show her Covid vaccination card. I was in a hurry to catch the appointment in the morning so I totally forgot to bring it. I understand they are cautious about it and have mentioned it over the phone. I told her that I forgot and I did not say anything else. But the lady goes "it's not my fault I asked it before" She did not have to be this rude. Everything that just happened made me feel extremely uncomfortable. This is the first time I have experienced this kind of situation. I was not sure if she was just rude or racist or both. I post my experience on social media right after I walked out the door. Thousands of people have viewed my post. Some of the comments I received were saying she was definitely racist. And the rest comments were just complaining how awful their customer service has always been and they also had unpleasant experiences with the front desk staff. I feel so sad that the hospital has good ratings for reasonable price but they have toxic people working here. read more
