I enjoyed a wonderful, relaxing, massage by Mario at the Catamaran Spa. Online booking was easy and there were plenty of open appointment times on the weekend about a week prior. They validate parking in the self parking lot. The spa itself is a bit hard to find, but you enter outside through the outdoor patio of the restaurant. They have a fitness center, sauna and steam room, shower, lockers, fitness center, and other little amenities. You wait for your therapist in the relaxation room, which is comfortable and stocked with fruits, water and hot tea. I was called promptly at my appointment time and Mario gave me the instructions when we got to my room. He checked in to ensure the pressure was good a few times, but not too many to disrupt the relaxation of the massage. Staff were friendly. After my massage, I enjoyed the outdoor whirlpool that overlooks mission bay. You have access to the spa amenities all day so you could leave and get lunch or walk around the property and return. I am a San Diego local. I've visited the Catamaran spa approximately four times this past year. Every time I go, it is such a rejuvenating and relaxing experience. I do not go to other spas in the area now because I love the staff, amenities and consistency at Catamaran. They have a sauna, steam room and whirlpool. They also keep the spa stocked with ice towels, skincare, razors, shaving cream, etc. I love to get there early and chat with a friend in the whirlpool, then use the steam room to soften up before my massage. After my massage, I take an everything shower and leave feeling so zen. The shower and skincare products smell so good! I was excited to use a gift certificate but was disappointed with the service & atmosphere and wouldn't recommend it. The spa itself is small & dated. My "50 minute" $204 massage with Shannon was only about 35 minutes long, I suppose the $34 mandatory tip leaves no incentive to give clients what they actually pay for. The facial by Lily was terrible as she is untrained and does not know how to do a facial massage, which is why she doesn't do it unless requested. The sound of the outside world is immediately paused. The lighting is dimmed and you are walked to the women's locker. There a robe and crispy white slippers await for you. The massage itself was great. However, I truly enjoyed waiting in the darker, quiet room, with light music prior to getting my massage. If you cant unplug there "Houston we have a problem!" Read on for the Pros and Cons: PROS: ~Overall, well appointed -- full on resort type spa. ~Relaxation lounge featuring tea and flavored water, dim lights, loungers and relaxing music. ~Nice decor with Buddha statues, mosaic tile, warm browns and creams. ~His and her locker rooms with respective sauna and steam rooms (i.e. not co-ed), 3 spacious showers with double privacy curtains, ample towels, robe in locker, key pad locker, spa slippers available, private changing rooms with mirror/hooks/curtain, complimentary toiletries available for use like deodorant, hairbrushes, hairspray, mouthwash, lotion, shampoo, conditioner, shower gel, etc. Hairdryers, restrooms, cold wash clothes, water in locker room. ~Generally clean, spa attendant is regularly sweeping for used towels, etc. ~When you pay for a treatment, you are able to use the outdoor spa hot tub (small), the steam room, sauna, relaxation room and resort pool and hot tub. ~ You're given 6 hours parking validation. If you use the resort pool (for which you need a wristband) you get given what is essentially a room key card which enabled us to exit the parking lot without a charge. ~Massage technicians were caring and friendly. ~Spa was nice and quiet the day we attended -- I practically had the locker room to myself most of the time. ~Nice gift shop off reception. ~The resort is attractive with a tropical feel. She neglected to tell me spa slippers were available. ~A bit of 'coming and going' by staff in the relaxation lounge. You could also hear hair dryers and the rumble of a tumble dryer. ~ Sauna and steam room are not co-ed, so you're sat there by yourself wishing you could be with your honey. ~I was not able to make a couples massage appointment on-line, I had to call. ~The relaxation room, massage oil, steam/sauna could have done with a bit of aromatherapy scent. The massage oil smelled like Canola. ~The spa is looking slightly tired in places. ~The outdoor spa hot tub fits about 4 people and is in a cramped corner of a patio overlooking the grass, lots of people walking by. ~If you visit the resort pool, be prepared for it to be crowded with lots of families. I was really looking for a zen, peaceful, quiet, tranquil spa experience - and unfortunately, that was not my experience at the Catamaran Spa. All of the staff I interacted with at the hotel and the spa were very nice and helpful. The facilities are clean, although in my opinion the women's locker room was a little narrow and cramped. I didn't feel there was much space to spread out and relax. You can get a pass to the hotel pool and the front desk staff also let me sit on the recliners on the front lawn facing the beach which was nice. Plenty of chairs at the hotel pool and towels are provided - could be fun with a group of friends. The private whirlpool is a nice addition, but it's a very small space with ~5 chairs - stiff wooden recliners that were not comfortable. I was really looking forward to the Relaxation Lounge - and I think it's a nice space (dimmed lighting, soft music, tea/water provided), but most of the time I was in there, other women were chatting loudly and it really took away from the experience for me. The room I got for my massage was so disappointing. I heard another woman complaining about it in the relaxation lounge... and of course, I end up in that room, ha! It felt like an abandoned office or something - it was very odd. Cavernous/echo-y feeling and there was a huge tub next to the massage table making loud whirring noises during the whole massage. It feels like they could have put a little more effort into the decor/ambiance to make it a more welcoming space. Maybe the other massage rooms are nicer. When I left my massage, my masseuse said she'd be waiting for me to lead me back to the relaxation lounge but she was nowhere to be found. If I could give this place a higher review I would! We purchased two 50 minute massages and spent several hours enjoying the amenities. We left more relaxed and happy than we could have imagined. The massages were perfect, from the pressure to the kindness of the staff! We then grabbed some fresh fruit and made our way to the public beach and soaked in some sun before heading back for some time in the hot tub. Before we left, we each took advantage of the infused showers. You check in, get your orientation, locker, robe and spa shoes and they set you free to enjoy all the amenities which include: -Beach front hot tub under palm trees surrounded by gardenias. -Beach front fitness room -The world's dreamiest locker room that has EVERYTHING a girl could want (including showers with fruit infused water OMFG! it's SO beautiful. -Cedar sauna -Eucalyptus steam room that smells like heaven -Fruit infused spa water, hot tea and fruit -Relaxation room that I swear, is literally the most relaxing place I've ever been in my life. You can spend the whole day bouncing between all the amenities with no limitations. I get palpitations just recalling how absolutely wonderful the spa was. Easter Sunday at the Catamaran Spa was so wonderful! Especially since it was Spa Week, making our services only $50 each! We were worried it was going to be packed but we ended up having the whirlpool, steam room, sauna, and hotel pool + shaded daybeds all to ourselves whenever we decided to use them. We made use of all their facilities and felt welcome everywhere we went. We had breakfast at Moray's- food was okay, service was excellent and they don't have restrictions on where you can eat, which was a huge plus for me. Another huge plus were the vitamin-c showers and several beautiful areas throughout the hotel grounds for meditation. It is the perfect staycation spot. We each got a 50 min. customized facial and a 50 min. unwind in paradise body wrap. They were both amazing and the attendants were professional every step of the way. I would def recommend Tricia for a facial. I haven't been here in two years but it is just as awesome as I remembered it and one of San Diego's better spa's. read more

I went last weekend for a birthday trip with my girlfriends. The hotel atmosphere, front desk staff, and restaurant were incredible. Really helpful and a great vibe. The bathrooms in particular in the rooms could stand some renovations. They are pretty dated and there isn't much room to do hair, skin, make up stuff which there should be at a spa destination. The spa front desk staff were particularly difficult. I tried to book appointments for myself and my friends twice on the phone and staff still got it wrong or missed parts of the bookings I requested. Also the website doesn't work properly so I couldn't just do it myself online. Staff were also rude to my friends when they checked out and made it seem like we were the ones being difficult for front desk mistakes. That said, the back of house massage therapists, and nail technician were incredible! Really professional and so so talented. When they say "put a little elbow grease into it", they must have been talking about this AMAZING massage! My masseuse Tara got into literally every nook and cranny with her elbows and managed to release months of built of stress and tension. I kid you not, I had goosebumps throughout the entire session it felt SO GOOD!!! Afterwards, we hung out in the jacuzzi overlooking the ocean. Since you are able to stay all day, I spent some time in the Eucalyptus Steam Room before showering to leave. Wish there were a policy of silent and meditative waiting in the relaxation room. PLACED IN A ROOM FOR TWO My massage was given a room with two massage tables in it. I presumed this room is meant for couples massage. Made me feel a bit awkward. NOTE Men and women's locker rooms both open into the same relaxation area (where all are clothed in robes only). My mother in law and I booked (2) aromatherapy massages for 10AM. Once we received our confirmation call Wednesday she suggested we arrived by 930. We arrive and amazed by how beautiful everything is. We made it to the spa entrance and are greeted after standing for a few moment. Once greeted she asked if we have ever been in before. We hadn't but we were soo excited. After filling out a small paper she says someone will be to greet us and give us a tour shortly (she just took a large group to show them everything). We waited around for close to 10 more minutes before the reception who checked us in said she would take us back to our locksince it was already 945. She showed us where our lockers would be and told us where we needed to be by 950 in the relaxation room. Once we wonder around the (beautiful) locker room finding things we make it to the relaxation room, where you have nicely separated areas to relax with your party while waiting for your treatment specialist to greet you. While relaxing and in a nice zen vibe with hot teas and infused waters, staff is noisily power walking back and forth from the locker rooms to the treatment hallway. Not at all relaxing. The aromatherapy massage was PURE heaven. After our massage we wanted to indulge in the whirlpool and lounge pool side. Since we weren't even told about any amenities or where they were we had to wonder around to find things. Luckily for us we bumped into a member of the spa and she kindly showed us to where the whirlpool was and let us know about the restaurants and the pool as well. Overall, it was an amazing experience. We had a great day of bonding and relaxing. Massage, food, drinks and ambience of the spa/resort was amazing. Treated my mom here on Mother's Day- we got citrus massage and facial. The resort itself is very pretty and very crowded with families. The spa was nice and had a lot of amenities: free water in bathroom(not often i see that), towels at the sinks (not paper towels), shaving cream at the showers, mouthwash, gym and jacuzzi with ocean front view. The spa was nicely kept and always stocked. It's a little spa, felt like the hallway was barely big enough to have two people pass by one another. I wish it was more outdoors then indoors. Boasting as the ONLY spa in San Diego with oceanfront view, you would've expected a massage out in the sand surrounded by palm trees or something. Definitely under utilized. Sure I can see why its indoors so that its more quiet but maybe they should've planned that out better so its not right next to a restaurant. It was also hard to find the spa, no clear directions unless you ask someone. And you have to walk through the dining area to get to spa entrance which is a little weird. The massage was ok. It didn't smell like citrus to be honest. It was very very light. During the massage was good but it was never like "yeah thats the spot keep going". My body felt sore the next day more than anything. The facial was better. My skin did feel wayyy better. The extraction of black heads hurt so much!! Would I recommend it? It felt really smooth afterwards but my nose hurt and was red for the next 2 days plus its already coming back. Lastly, customer service was ok. It wasn't the friendliest service you'd expect for the price you're paying. I won't be coming back- too over priced for the overall experience. You pay $25 bucks for the entire day (9am-9pm) and you are able to use their hot sauna, steam room, jacuzii, pool. They give you a locker, nice bathrobe and flip flops. The facility itself is extremely clean, not too many people use it, the relaxation room has fruits, teas and spa water (cucumber + lemon). The entire spa has nice aroma and soothing music. I love spa treatments, but rarely find them worth the price. Thus I always look forward to spa week, during which spas across the city offer a trio of $50 treatments. My top choice is SK Sanctuary in La Jolla, but it doesn't always participate in spa week, and is booked immediately when it does. I decided to try the Spa at the Catamaran Hotel. The Yelp reviews promised an elegant, full treatment spa (although the spa reviews were mixed in with hotel reviews, which is why I'm writing for the Catamaran Spa specifically). When I arrived at the Resort, I was surprised to find it a bit outdated and stale. After wandering through many faded narrow halls, I was relieved to find the spa entrance. I checked in and was promptly guided through each of the spa amenities and the locker room. Soothing island colors - aquamarine, sand, and wood - checker the tile walls and fan mosaics on the floor. Small Buddhist statues, orchids, and Polynesian furniture accent the elegant and simplistic atmosphere. I customized the security code for my locker, and changed into their soft bathrobe and not so comfortable plastic flip flops (how could they confuse plastic with luxury?). With nearly two hours to spare before my facial, I didn't know which amenity to enjoy first: the Jacuzzi, the fitness center, the steam room, the sauna, or the relaxation room. Since it was still beautiful outside, I headed for the outdoor Jacuzzi. Seated just steps away from the Mission Bay Boardwalk, I soaked in sailboats on the bay, friendly volleyball games, and avid joggers. Somehow the glass fence enclosing the Jacuzzi kept anyone from looking in (so I could see but not be seen) and even muted the sounds of the boardwalk. Even better, the Jacuzzi was solely for spa patrons, and thus not full of hotel guests and children running amuck. The Jacuzzi itself was gorgeous with iridescent tiles and wooden lounge chairs. Next up, the eucalyptus steam room complete with a cool-off shower. I grabbed an ice-soaked washcloth for my neck, shed the robe and bikini, and lounged naked in the opaque steam for about 30 minutes. I was thrilled to have it all to myself, not feeling very comfortable in a room full of naked, sprawled out women. My only complaint was the sound produced when steaming up the room. It's normally loud, but this startled the tranquility and stiffened my relaxed muscles. I had the same frightened sensation when flushing the unbelievably loud toilet in the bathroom (Those are probably my only complaints about this spa. Yes, it's that good.) With a bit of time to spare before my facial, I decided to explore the relaxation room. This might have been my favorite amenity. Cucumber-lemon water, fresh peaches and oranges, a selection of hot tea, individual tubs of honey, and gourmet trail mix sit atop a small bar. After helping myself to tea and a few magazines, I slid into one of the wooden lounge chairs nestled underneath a flowing white canopy. The facial was just as soothing and beneficial as the rest of my experience. Nikki was wonderful and I'd ask for her again. She was tender but diligent, performing all the treatments without irritating my skin (yes the extractions pinched, but she did not break skin or leave swollen marks). She also answered all of my questions about skincare and products very honestly, admitting that common brands such as Oil of Olay can be just fine. What a way to spend a day off! I had an appointment for a massage at 10am on a Tuesday, I was told on the phone that I could use the other amenities that the spa had to offer so I got there around 8am. The staff greeted me as I walked in, gave me a tour, and showed me to my locker. I used the gym and ran on the treadmill while looking onto the bay. I then showered in this amazing vitamin C shower. To be honest, I don't even know what makes it so wonderful, but it was wonderful. I also used the herb infused steam room which was just as perfect. I haven't even had my massage test and I'm having the greatest time. I went into the relaxation room to wait for my masseuse and I sat in this chair. Let me tell you about this chair. I can't wait to buy one, the whole room was beautiful and tranquil and the perfect lounge chair that I was in sipping on my hot tea completed my relaxation room time. My massage was wonderful, Christina was my therapist and she listened to exactly what I wanted. This was a treat and it was well worth it. I can't wait to find a reason to return. read more

Ah, my first spa. I already miss it. It only costs $25 per person. This is the cheapest I can find anywhere. And it's definitely nice. Absolutely nothing that would suggest that this place is bad. Fantastic after work event at the Catamaran resort & spa. Natalya the Russian is very kin to spas and pampering herself, so she gets a lot of opportunities for open houses, getting mini treatments and having a good time and some freebies on the way. I was not expecting royal treatment, that was for sure. But I got it! Catamaran is designed as a tropical looking resort, very touristy, but at the same time frequented by locals who want to enjoy a day of sauna/Jacuzzi/pool or simple customers who want to get some facial, mani-pedi, etc. In this open house there were not many visitors. Maybe people think that is going to be some sort of sales pressure, but in our case it did not exist at all, and even my friends booked some treatments for this coming Sunday. We were received with champagne, wine and sushi and we were introduced to all cabins and services. Smells soooo good in there. Many products they use are made in Fiji, and have very tropical aromas. Kim the beautician that treated us with a fantastic OPI brand manicure was singing French oldies with Alessa the Belgian and me. Too much fun surrounded by Buddha figures and greenery everywhere. I also got a very subtle makeup. To culminate the great evening, we were offered a bag of beauty goodies like Moroccan oil travel size, coupons and cute soap. Outside, at the patio, facing the waterfront, more food was waiting for us: fresh from the grill shrimp chicken and carne asada tacos and no less great desserts and drinks.
