With tasty, fresh seafood, great prices, and a BYOB atmosphere, you can't do much more to top The Causeway. After stopping in on a whim a short time ago, I'm glad I ran into this Gloustah (fine...Gloucester) gem. Had a chance to try the fried calamari and the fried haddock -- and left pleasantly surprised, satiated, and stuffed. If you don't fill up on the six pack of Cape Ann you brought in from down the street, or the complimentary rolls, the portion sizes will definitely make sure you have to loosen your belt a notch or too. Not much to say about the service, but it was was quick, prompt, and friendly as well, even on a night where the place seemed to be pretty crowded. As a word to the wise, you might want to get here early -- my party of two had just enough space, as the place was jumping even near closing time. And as an added bonus, The Causeway opens up early in the spring, months before some of their rival sea-catch eateries, so you've got a whole 8+ weeks before the seafood season even starts! read more

I absolutely love this place. It's a total dive. The floor is totally slanted, as is your table, as are your plates. The portions are ginormous. Mussel bowl was twice as big as my head. And the plate of fried food we had was ridiculously oversized. But most importantly, this place is BYOB. They own the liquor store next door, so buy what you want, bring it to the restaurant, and they'll ask you what kind of glass you prefer. Brilliant. read more

Love The Causeway- it's one of our favorite places to go for good fresh seafood (and french fries!) in Gloucester. They have the BEST HADDOCK CHOWDER! They always have great priced specials on the board. And their fish is fresh and delicious every single time! The portions are pretty large, so sharing is possible. The smells that come from the kitchen are amazing. A definite must go to place if you are on the North Shore. It is a BYOB type of place, which is ok, because they are conveniently located next to a liquor store that has a pretty decent selection of wine! Their baked haddock is my favorite!! Did I mention the chowder, their fish chowder is amazing! Two words of caution is that they are working out of a diner type place, so it's a little run down, and the other is that they are real popular! Okay, let's first get a few things out of the way: you come here for the seafood, the portions, and the price. If you leave complaining that you paid too much for too little and it wasn't seafood, then you shouldn't have gone here in the first place. I've only been here twice, but this past Friday I took my girlfriend here for a great dinner and a good time. Everyone in Gloucester that I know loves this place. If you love seafood, you'll love this place. If you love huge portions, you'll love this place. If you love a good value, you'll love this place. In fact, I even thought about recommending this joint to the Man Vs. Food show on the Travel Channel. It is BYOA (bring your own alcohol), which as far as I know is limited to beer, wine, and malt beverages. They have a liquor store right next door with a good selection of all three. You will be provided with bottle and wine openers as well as glasses when you are seated at your table. I have heard the mussels and the prime rib are the best ever served in an eating establishment. I did try the mussels and I do have to agree: they are simply the best mussels you can ever order in a restaurant. Not only do you get two preparation choices, but you get a huge portion, the mussels are ginormous, they're very tasty, and they practically fall right out of the shell. The price is only $10 and it's a meal in itself. Seriously, these mussels looked mutated they were so large. My girlfriend ordered the lobster pie and she really enjoyed it. It was stuffed full of lobster. I ordered the coconut rum haddock for my entree and it was simply delicious, although I only ate a few bites because I was so full from the mussels. Both of our entrees came with choice of two sides and we both went with asparagus and baked potato. We both took home leftovers of our meals (including mussels). The seafood is the best around because it is the freshest, prepared the way it should be, and served in huge portions. You can't go wrong with this place. I never was much of a Salmon lover but if you've never tried this dish make it a must at least once in your trip to the Causway. The Causeway is the perfect excuse to skip breakfast and lunch in anticipation of having a huge meal for dinner. The portions are large and the prices are cheap but that doesn't mean that quality is sacrificed. On a recent night there we had salmon, haddock, and spaghetti and meatballs (non-fish person). The salmon was cooked to perfection and the portion was at least three times what you'd expect to be served. The haddock was delicious and came with about 2 pounds of squash. The spag and balls was enough for dinner and lunch the next day, as was the fish. The menu has something for everyone. The Causeway is 'BYOB' but there is a liquor store next door and you pay only a service charge for a glass. Parking can be tight and be careful leaving the lot as drivers don't seem to understand that this area of Rte 133 is not the Indy 500 raceway. The restaurant is ultra casual and as long as you have some type of clothing on you'll get served. The tables and chairs have seen better days and you might find a roll or two on the floor but that won't keep you from having a great meal. The best time to eat there is on a Saturday afternoon around 3pm. Summer nights require up to an hour wait but in the off-months you can usually get in quick. read more

We yelped this place and thought why not. It is a small place and initially difficult to recognize, there is a liquor store attached which is awesome because it's BYOB. We were seating pretty quickly and then, we ate. The portions are MASSIVE. We got the mussels and I felt like we ate the whole ocean (way too much for two). Then we split a main course and still had leftovers. Everything tasted really good and the service was great and the bill was a great surprise! Definitely going back. read more

If your are hungry and want lots of great food for cheap this is the place to go. The Restaurant itself is not much to look at but the food is fresh, well prepared, and ample. The staff is always friendly and attentive and the portions are so large that you can easily make three meals out of one. Let's take the fish chowda.. It's a bowl, with a huge chunk of fish, the size of the bowl. There might be a piece of tater in there or not. The cream and butter part of the chowda is delicious and natural, not thickened. Folks, thickened chowder (as tasty as it might be) is not real New England style. Thin and creamy is the way it has been for years. The fried fare is excellent as are the pasta and lobsta dishes. Because it is a BYOB, you can easily have an enormous and delicious meal for two for less than $25. read more

Wow pretty disappointed! So my boyfriend always picks the restaurants and when I pick I have to impress him and pick a good place ( or he won't let me pick them anymore) So the causeway was my pick and I knew I was going to nail It. I guess you could say I kind of nailed it. The last time I came here was about 3-4 years ago and when I came there was a liquor store next door, this time there was no liquor store :( super sad! We came at the right time because there was no line we sat right down. After 10 minutes I had to flag a server down because we have not been greeted yet. Mind you it's the tiniest restaurant ever! The server came over and she was just miserable, didn't crack a smile the entire time! I ordered the cup of chowdah ! Was very good but I like my chowder to be thick and it was watery. Very generous amount of clans at the bottom. My boyfriend ordered the scallops wrapped in bacon. He loved them ate them all. For our entrees I picked the steak tips which were okay not bad but as a big steak eater I know my steaks. Flew into Boston and rented a car - we just started driving north and my hubby looks up yelp recommendations for seafood on his phone and this place popped up. SO GLAD! We put our name in, then went next door to grab a few brews - it is BYOB - yippee! We had a hard time deciding on what to get, and ended up with all fantastic choices, but just way too much! Be warned, they are not kidding, the portions here are HUGE!!! We tried the fish chowder, which was a large bowl (even though we ordered a cup size). Delicate and flavorful with huge chunks of whitefish. mmmmmmmmmm We also started with the mussels in white sauce. It was an appetizer, but could have easily been our entire meal. Some of the fattest yummy mussels we've ever had. We had to force ourselves to stop eating both of these to make room for the stuffed lobster. The lobster came stuffed with shrimp, scallops and breadcrumbs, a side of fries and side of squash. The flavors together almost drove us insane. and almost burst our pants. Were do I start. With all the great reviews this place got my husband wanted to try it. First,the parking lots a nightmare. Then we waited an hour for a table. The place is the size of a closet and we got seated right near the door and the window. So not only did I have to put up with people constantly coming in and out but also people outside staring at us through the window. The food comes 30 minutes later. Not sure why people mention big portions of fish...I got a huge portion of french fries with about 6-7 scallops on top. If you're ever in the Gloucester area, go to Lobsta Land instead! read more

This eatery was by far my most favorite during my trip to Gloucester. I love everything about this place: The small size of the place lets you know that they can focus on the food and not feel overwhelmed by 125 people at one time, the casual decor makes you feel at home, the portions are HUGE and the prices are fair and the food is homemade as ever and as equally delicious. Everything is wonderful, like a fried platter full of sweet and plump calamari, shrimp, clams onion rings and fries. Or the fresh mussles, seafood pasta and classic fish and chips. But the BEST item on the menu that I ordered was the crab-stuffed sole. Oh God, the crab-stuffed sole was the bomb.com It came with three sole fillets stuffed with sweet, soft crab mixed with a fresh breadcrumb mixture. it was cooked in a rich and creamy palomino sauce that made me sigh every time I shoved it in my mouth. Ok... So it is classic new england style fried seafood. Simply prepared, lightly breaded, and nothing to exciting. Prices are good, portions are generous. The parking lot is small, and there was an excruciating wait for sit down service, to be expected. I would suggest for the sake of your own sanity, get your food to go and eat it elsewhere. this place's food is certainly good. we ordered the mussel appetizer ($10), steak tip salad ($12), causeway combo ($15), fried calamari ($11), and seafood marinara ($23). everything was so good and the portions were huge. these 5 dishes were way too much for our group of 5. the servers were friendly and quick. the place is pretty old but they keep it well maintained. we got there at around 1 and had to wait like 15-20 mins. the place can hold around 40-50 people but it was continuously packed. worth the wait though. i would recommend this place. read more

This place is fine. Food is decent, but I do have higher expectation since it has 4 stars at yelp. 1. Clam chowder - was very good, creamy and big portion. 2. Lobster roll - the roll was a bit disappointed, it seems like a toasted regular hamburger bun, so it's more like a lobster hamburger than a lobster roll. The lobster inside was decent, they do put a big portion of lobster in it, but I would expect it to be lighter on the mayonnaise. 3. Fried native clam - was pretty excited to order this dish, but didn't taste very good, it was ok. The good part is some of their whole clams were pretty big, but the texture of the clam and the thickness of the batter do go very well together in this case. I think their batter may go well with calamari. I guess it may taste better if they go with a lighter batter. Anyways, I think I may have also didn't order the right dishes since this is an Italian seafood restaurant. This place is definitely good for family, since the portion side is very big. read more

As a hard-core seafood snob, I'm not sure what to say about The Causeway: My experiences have been both very good and very disappointing. The good: I absolutely agree with the other reviewers that the fish chowder is the best I've ever had. Very simple, no frills: Heavy cream, butter, fish stock, potatoes, and at least a pound of delicious, fresh fish. The huge portion will satisfy you for the rest of the day. My other favorite, if they're on the menu that day, are the jumbo fried clams, which are the biggest, juiciest, and freshest I've ever tasted. The bad: The clam chowder is pretty forgettable, which is surprising, given that the fish chowder is so outstanding. It's the standard thick stuff with a very light flavor and more potatoes than clams. Skip it. It also seems that not all their fried fish is equally delicious. The one time we decided to switch it up and order shrimp instead of those delicious, delicious clams, we found that they had no flavor. The same was true of the lobster roll I ordered that afternoon. I was perfectly satisfied with the portion size (lots of other places skimp), but for some reason the lobster had absolutely NO flavor, except that it tasted vaguely like the refrigerator. It was so inedible I sent it back, which I don't think I've ever done with lobster in my life. Seems like your dining experience depends on what you order. I've since been told by a local that the fish chowder is really the only thing worth getting, but I'll definitely be back for it. Be advised that the single dining room is extremely small and I've never been here when there wasn't a wait, even during the off-seasons. We've never had to wait more than 15 minutes, but it might be a problem for you if you're coming with a group and the weather is bad, especially if you are fussy. They really ought to expand or move to a new place! They would make more money in a day, the servers would feel less rushed, and the diners would be more comfortable. The restaurant is so cramped that I've never used the bathroom here because I can't bring myself to use a single facility two feet away from where other people are eating. :/ A mixed bag. After a long day at the beach in this beautiful seaside town I came here on recommendation from my aunt and uncle who frequent this establishment when visiting. It was dinner time and the place was packed. Good sign right? Places that serve awful food wouldn't have you on a waiting list would they? This was on a Wednesday too so I'm assuming it's always this busy. Good for them! This is a popular place for all the locals to eat at. I could tell because everyone outside seemed to know each other and the waitress was on a first name basis with everyone around us. We got our table and ordered the mussels in white wine sauce. For only 10 dollars this is a great appetizer, there was more than enough to share among my 3 person party. I liked everything about this dish, the sauce, the mussels, the quantity, the price and the severe lack of sand. Definitely my favorite part of the meal. As for entrees, I ordered the fried calamari. It came with cole slaw and fries which is pretty standard. Again it was huge portions but as far as taste it wasn't anything out of the ordinary. Still good nonetheless, I just wish they served it with marinara sauce instead of tartar. Other dishes ordered were the baked haddock and the grilled swordfish tips. I sampled some of those too and both were fairly tasty and this is coming from a guy who doesn't like fish too much. The interior isn't the most eye appealing but who cares. The only complaint I have is the poor ventilation. There was a great deal of smoke coming out of the kitchen, so much so that the restaurant was beginning to look hazy. A woman at the table next to us had to open one of the windows and even that didn't help. I thought the fire marshal was about to bust in and tell everyone to get out. All in all this is a great restaurant if you enjoy seafood! Oh and it's BYOB but I noticed on the menu they charge a $1 for each glass set up. The food was 4-star, but the lack of parking and the crazy wait-times make me think twice about coming here again. Dined with a coworker and seeing the huge portion sizes at the tables of other diners, we decided to get 2 entrees and split them. We had the Fried Combo Platter and the Seafood Marinara. The batter on the fried foods was really crunchy and held up, even 20mins into dinner. I certainly wouldn't chance taking it out though in a styrofoam box. The dish included fried fish (haddock), shrimp, clams (whole), with coleslaw & fries. Overall a thumbs up for this dish. The Seafood Marinara is a large paella pan filled with over 2 dozen mussels, shrimp, scallop, & squid. The marinara sauce was a little bland considering all the seafood in the dish. I would probably order something different next time (so far, my vote goes to Seaport Grille's Seafood Fra Diavolo instead). The linguine was cooked nicely. The menu prices are in line with some of the area seafood restaurants. If I go back, I think I'll try the Lobster Pie. While we were waiting to be seated, we could see into the kitchen, and the cooks were really turning out the Lobster Pie. I gotta think that's a good sign. read more

I must admit I like to attend this establishment a few times a year. It is known to have the freshest and largest serving of seafood for the price per meal. Our last visit on March 24 was good, not great. I feel as though this is a trend, as each time I eat there the quantity decreases while the price increase. We ordered lobster pie, the peters platter, prime rib (medium rare) and a twin lobster dinner. Every meal was cooked to as ordered and stout. The biggest complaint came from the Peter platter as it was rather disappointing this time around. The majority of this platter was bite size pieces of haddock and calamari. There were only 2-3 scallops, about 8 fried clams all of which had non existence bellies, and one had a belly. There were not many shrimp either. I was rather disappointed. Overall due to the trend of less quantity and higher prices, if I do visit again which I most likely will, I will not order the peters platter. read more

This place is amazing! I first ate here a few years ago with my dad's friend, a life-local, and I've brought so many people here since then. My absolute favorite thing about this place, besides the huge portions, is the clam chowder. A bowl will fill you up by itself, and is absolutely LOADED with clams!! The scallops are delicious as well. The only downsides are the lack of parking (there is a very small parking lot out front, and what looks like a good place to park directly across the street - but you aren't supposed to park across the street), as well as the small size of the restaurant for how busy they get. If you want quality seafood, this is the place to go. It just may be the number one reason I LOVE Gloucester. I've had a majority of the fried seafood dishes, and hey, what isn't good when its fried to perfection? They probably have the best fried clams you'll get in Massachusetts. The clam chowder is also excellent. Its thick and creamy but not overwhelming. And it doesn't leave you feeling overstuffed afterward. Caesar salad with swordfish tips? Um, yes please! My meal of choice is of course the mussels. If you're a normal person, I'm sure this bowl is more than large enough to share with another person. If you are me, it is just the right size! I have never, ever received such a huge portion of delectable mussels for only $8! When I say huge, I mean it. They come out in this metal bowl that contains at least 1-2 pounds of mussels. I am a huge fan of mussels, definitely on my top 5 favorite foods list, and this is the place to get them! Unfortunately, if you don't live in the area or won't be back again, you may leave depressed. Depressed because of all the options you missed out on because your stomach isn't large enough to eat more than one meal. Depressed because you had to choose only one option (or 2, who knows?) among an array of seafood options. Don't be fooled by its questionable exterior, or its not so comforting interior. UGH! I was so excited to come here. Maybe we came at the wrong time with the wrong expectations of what would be on the menu. But, this was too much for a 12pm brunch on a Sunday. The service is fantastic and the mozzarella sticks are good. The clam chowder is very mediocre and the baked scallops were over/underwhelming at the same time. SO. MANY. SCALLOPS. SO. LITTLE. FLAVOR. I will repeat that the wait staff was incredible and so attentive but it doesn't make up for the mediocre food. I have gone to Causeway a half a dozen times and it is consistently good. Huge portions and friendly staff. A few do's: Great place to go with family. The other day, I had a cup of seafood chowder and chicken parmesan. The seafood chowder is amazing; huge chunks of fish. I I enjoyed the chicken parmesan, tasty and huge portion. I have also had the baked haddock and fish and chips in the past, and those are excellent too. A few don'ts: The place can be loud so might not be ideal for a romantic dinner. Also don't go with people that eat three carrot sticks and say, "This was great, I'm done." Go with people that can eat because the portions are huge. Otherwise could get awkward as you gorge on huge portions of food as the other person stares at you with amazement or horror with the amount you eat. read more
