Partridge in a pear tree cocktail & a cosmo
    Sarah P.

My husband and I sat at the bar Saturday night, and Tawna waited on us. She was so nice and efficient, and made Michael a Cosmo. For me, she made one of their special holiday drinks called "A Partridge in a Pear Tree," which had Absolute pear vodka and Prosecco in it. We shared a side of their famous onion rings and baked scallops casserole, topped with Ritz crackers, for dinner. It was delicious and plentiful. It came with two sides, so we had their fresh broccoli and wedge salad (iceberg lettuce & tomatoes), which Tawna brought out before the entree, which was great! This quaint neighborhood bar/restaurant, which has been around since 1961, was also festively decorated. They hung garland and lights from their ceiling, which looked awesome.

    Fried oyster po'boy

Visiting Salem with my mother, we were on the hunt for fresh seafood. Dube's is the definition of hole-in-the-wall: if you didn't know where it was, you would drive right past, as it looks like just a regular house in a residential neighborhood. Inside there is a full bar and plenty of booths. For a weekday around noon it was pretty busy. Our waitress was friendly and helped point out things on the menu. We got a large order onion rings which turned out to be a MASSIVE portion for only $11. We also ordered the fried oyster po'boy and a side order of fried haddock. The po'boy was packed with more shredded lettuce and tomatoes than I have ever seen on a sandwich before. The roll was absolutely overflowing with perfectly crispy fried oysters. The fried haddock was so flaky and tender, and their homemade tartar sauce was outstanding. For the price we got a massive amount of seafood, definitely enough to take home. Dube's is the real deal seafood and I know I will be back again soon.

A side order of fried clams and fried scallops. So yummy!

Can there be six stars? Please! Super simple place, unassuming. Tanya was friendly and welcoming. Fried clams with bellies. Cooked perfectly. Just a touch of "the sea" in the flavor. Perfect. Nice size portion, but wait... Fried scallops. Ditto above. So happy. Can't get this in Rochester. So happy to find the little gem!

Cheese burger club with French fries

We had to make last minute changes to our dinner plans and came here as the next option. It was a Wednesday afternoon so it was decently full on the inside. There is a cute canopy in the back for outdoor seating as well. For entrees, we had their baked haddock which can come with French fries, baked potato, or mashed potatoes and ratatouille or steamed vegetables. They had turkey clubs, and hamburgers so my friend requested for a cheeseburger club which they happily obliged. I opted for their seafood stew which came with salad and rice after much conflict between that or their stuffed shrimp. Everyone loved their choices as everything was well seasoned. I liked how the rice had pieces of carrots and must have been cooked with chicken broth. Baked haddock must have been made with a stick of butter as well as their mashed potatoes which I found almost gummy in texture, not my preferred. French fries were decent but the ratatouille vegetables were fantastic. French onion soup came out with the freshly torched cheese on top and was good enough to finish every drop. Overall, great experience. Our waitress was nice and personable checking in on us regular. I would definitely come back again and see why it's been a classic for so long.

Went here a couple weeks ago. It's a small place, but food service and drinks were all wonderful. We had about a 10 minute wait for a table. We were seated and a waitress came over a few minutes later to get our brink order. Started with the vanilla bean martini. It was delicious dessert in a glass. My husband got the clam chowder it was a bit on the thin side, but he enjoyed it every spoonful had tons of clams. I got the seafood bisque loaded with perfect cooked seafood. We shared the 3 way platter, perfect for 2 people. Golden fried not greasy. Coleslaw wasn't good way too vinegary. I wish I read the menu a little closer because the platter just came with fries I would have order a side of onion rings, because the table next to us got them and the looked delicious. Second cocktail was the Rock Candy Cocktail very good. It's a now frills place, but would definitely go back.

Looking for the quintessential, family-owned and operated, New England restaurant/bar with heaping plates of perfectly prepared seafood - especially whole belly clams? This. Is. It! I cannot sing this place's praises enough: food quality, portion size, variety, value, unpretentious atmosphere, AND THE MOST AMAZING AND FRIENDLY WAITSTAFF. My only regret about my stop today is that I didn't get the name of the waitress. She was phenomenal - super knowledgeable, accommodating, genuinely friendly, and a Salem/Beverly ambassador that made our (me and my friends from Spain) visit especially memorable. Server #1 (according to my receipt) is a class act, a true gem, and a credit to Dube's brand. Never will we forget her kindness, banter, and hospitality. Or the food! Simply put, this was a great experience from start to finish. Do I HIGHLY recommend this place? In-DUBE-itably [Sorry. That was weak]

After walking by earlier, we decided on the Shanty for dinner. We ordered some of the fried cheese curds for an appetizer with a couple drinks and each got the lobster roll. The cheese curds were delicious and did not last long. The lobster roll came with fries. The lobster was great! Everything tasted fresh and I really enjoyed the softness of the bread with the lobster. The fries were not as great. Just something about them didn't hit like I hoped. Our server was great and the restaurant was busy but not packed so it felt nice and relaxed for our meal. The lobster roll is listed at market price so make sure you take note of that when you order. I think they were around $40 each which is a little pricey. We would definitely come back whenever we have a craving for lobster in Salem.

They have a "rule" that you should walk outside the building to get to the restrooms, and the dude is policing this rule since he has nothing to do. Need an extra bowl to split the soup? No worries, the dude will lecture your elderly parents his unsolicited opinions on how the soup will spill everywhere, so you shouldn't do it. Funny enough, the same dude spilled the soup all over the place when he was bringing them to us. Aside from the rude dude, prices are insane. We are not even in peak season, so they are serving the locals but their prices have a 50% or so markup from industry average. ($40 for a small and $60 for a large lobster roll). They have an automatic 20% gratuity on parties of 3 or more, so they get rewarded on their bad service no matter what. I highly recommend avoiding this dump.

After roaming the streets, checking…read moreout all the witch museums and novelty shops, we realized all we had this afternoon was a cup of coffee. We were starving so we looked up lobster roll near us and a shop next to the harbor popped up. So we made our way there. Unfortunately, it was a to go joint. We wanted to enjoy a site down meal so we looked again. The Clam Shack was near us so we made our way there. Parking our car, I'm looking at the shop and it honestly looked like a setting from a Hallmark movie. A cute little shop, in a park, with the harbor in the background with boats freely floating in the water, with the sun beaming through the fluffy clouds and people happily eating on bright blue tables. Like, how much more perfection could be added to this scene? It was simply breathtaking. We made our way to the window. A sweet young lady greeted us! It was wonderful having such great customer service right of the bat! I told the gal that I wanted a lobster roll. It was a must have being in Massachusetts! My daughter got a seafood plate with fried haddock and clams. We got a little of everything so we were excited to eat! It should be criminal to have this kind of food available to you all the time! To live by the water and have this kind of seafood makes me want to move here. My lobster roll looked like perfection wrapped in food paper. My daughter's plate was overflowing with fried goodness. Our food tasted as good as it looked! My lobster was mixed in butter on a soft buttery roll. Ughhhh it was heavenly! The lobster was tender, fresh and amazingly prepared. I tried a piece of my daughter's haddock and clams. You can't get seafood fresher than this. The haddock tasted like it was just caught and cooked. The fries were fried perfectly! Being from Idaho, this was the first place that has given us potatoes that I have approved of! Everything we so so so good! I couldn't have asked for a better last meal on my vacation in Boston. The food, the scene, the customer service and location of this seafood joint was something I could have ever dreamt of. My time eating here with my daughter will forever be a core memory for me. I don't know if I'll ever get the chance to come back but if I do, I hope my next visit is just as perfect as today's.

Really Good Food, Just Bring a Little Patience…read more It was 68° and one of those genuinely nice summer days, so we decided to eat outside at The Village Tavern. The patio was clean, quiet, and not overly crowded. No tables packed together, no one yelling over the next table, and no need to spend the meal trying to dodge somebody else's conversation. Just a nice, comfortable spot to eat. Our server was friendly, helpful, and attentive for most of the meal. The only issue was the timing. The food took a while to come out, which was a little surprising because it really wasn't that busy. Then, after we finished, I sat with empty plates in front of me for quite a while before finally getting her attention to ask for the check. I'm not asking for instant service, but once the food is gone, I'm usually ready to begin the portion of the meal where I leave. The two waits together were enough to cost a star. Fortunately, the food was very good. We started with the cheesy pretzel bites and avocado fries. Both were delicious and both disappeared pretty quickly. The pretzel bites came with herb butter, garlic, Parmesan, mozzarella, parsley and pomodoro sauce. Lots of cheese, plenty of flavor, and exactly the kind of appetizer that's going to be gone before anyone has had a chance to decide whether they want another one. The avocado fries were crispy on the outside, creamy inside, and just as good. My wife got the French dip and really liked it. The bread was toasted perfectly, the cheese was melted just right, and the au jus was hot and flavorful. Nothing fancy about it, just a really well-done French dip. The kids both got burgers. My son ordered his with ketchup only, but it came with mayo. He was not happy about that, and I can't really argue with him. If I order ketchup only, I'm also going to be wondering how mayo managed to make the cut. My daughter got the Rodeo Smash Burger with BBQ sauce and onion rings and loved it. Everybody got fries, and they were probably the most consistently good thing on the table. Cooked perfectly and seasoned well without being ridiculously salty. You could actually taste the potato, which feels like a reasonable expectation that restaurants occasionally treat as an ambitious request. I got the Cantina Short Rib Tacos, and these were easily my favorite. Shredded short rib, lettuce, salsa verde, pico de gallo, cilantro and sour cream. The short rib was tender, rich, and full of flavor, and the toppings worked really well together. The salsa verde and pico brought some acidity and freshness, the cilantro added another layer, and the sour cream balanced out the richness of the beef. Nothing overpowered anything else. Just really good tacos with a lot of flavor in every bite. The menu also had quite a few other things that caught my attention. The Reuben in particular. I noticed it after I'd already ordered, which is always unfortunate because now I have to come back and see if it was worth ignoring everything else for. There were several other things I'd happily try too. So, four stars. The food was very good, the patio was comfortable, and the service was friendly. The food took longer than it should have on a relatively quiet day, and waiting for the check after we were already finished didn't help. Neither ruined the meal, but both were noticeable. Clean up the timing a little and this would be an easy five.
