We ordered ahead for carry out this evening. I placed the order around 4:30 for a 5:30 pickup. I arrived at the restaurant in time and they asked for my name and order soon after I walked into the pickup area. I waited a good 10 minutes before they brought out our food. No problem I thought, perhaps the order was misplaced but at least the food would be fresh! This was not the case. When I opened the food at home it was extremely cold and not edible. Bread in the sandwiches was wet, vegetables were witty, meat and cheese cold, fries cold and rubbery. We believe in supporting local businesses, especially restaurants right now and order out 3-4 times each week. This was by far the worst carry out order I can remember. I assume they made the sandwiches and they sat for the better part of an hour. I'm sure they knew the sandwiches had been sitting for a long time... very disappointed! read more

The food and beverage selection at Cellar are incredible, but I have to admit that I found the food to be just so-so. The waitress was friendly, the food arrived quickly, and the portions were substantial. Unfortunately, the food didn't wow me. The calamari was over fried and served with a sauce that tasted like warm cocktail sauce. The Italian Spaghetti with MacDaddy meatballs was the best of our meals, served with ginormous sausage meatballs. The sauce was tasty but not especially memorable. The Chicken Souvlaki Kabobs were just ok, and I had similar feelings about the calzone and pizza. I appreciated their extensive beer list that includes ciders and sours and there was a large cocktail list as well. We sat outside and enjoyed the overall experience, but the food is not what made it memorable. In my opinion, a bit more seasoning in the meals would add another star. read more

Solid 3 1/2 -- cute little pub/bar just across the street from VTech's campus. We stopped in for lunch and ate out on the patio since the weather was nice. I ordered the french dip which came with chips. The sandwich and au jus were pretty good. The chips were hella stale. We also ordered these fried avocado bite appetizers that were pretty tasty. Service was sort of slow, especially given that it wasn't particularly busy when we visited. For two sandwiches, the apps, and a couple drinks, our lunch was over $40 -- so for the quality vs. price, it was a little on the steep side. I'd probably stop here again if I'm in town and the occasion presented itself. read more

We came here for a friend's birthday on a Monday afternoon and the service was terrible. The restaurant was almost empty and we had a 4 person party. The waitress took 30 minutes to get our order (drinks too) and forgot our drinks multiple times. The food was sub par at best and very cold. 4 of us went out to dinner tonight the restaurant was busy. There was an empty table so we sat down. It was a seat yourself table was clear, but there was still some crumbs on the table. We sat there for 10 minutes or longer as five of the tables were seated around us and served when we got a worker to come over to our table. She said you shouldn't sit down until the tables being cleaned very chastising way, but she had gone to all the other five tables and cleaned their tables and serve them without saying anything to them. For those of you out of town, this is a sort of " college hipster " hangout near VT that is surprisingly good! My GF had the Pasta Aegean & I had the daily special of beef cannelloni. Both were fantastic and a big for a serving. BIIIGGG beer selection and wine too! Like one review stated, it IS very tight quarters in there, with not too many places to sit. I have been going to the Cellar off and on for the last 5 years, but quite a lot this summer. Recently I had the cheese steak for lunch and it was incredibly tasty. I think I've officially been to the Cellar more as a graduate then when I was a student at Tech (for eating). It's become one of my favorite places to eat or chill drink in Blacksburg when I go back for basketball or football games. I've NEVER had a bad meal there and the drink selection has and always will be a strength of the Cellar. I recently for the first time had their Cajun Shrimp Dip with the pita. It was... INCREDIBLE. I have no idea how I have never tried it and it makes me sad thinking about how I missed out for so long but also happy because I know what's in my future. Of course, the pizzas are pretty good and the pastas I've had have never disappointed. Just an all around great place to go. The seating could be a little better upstairs and downstairs - tough to stand at the entrance and hover near a table to make sure you get one, but it's worth it. I've been going to the Cellar for nearly 20 years now. It's easily my favorite bar in Blacksburg, especially since they often draw folks who are older than college-aged. I've often had unexpected, delightful conversations with strangers there. Just as often I've been with friends or come alone with a book. In addition to their extensive beer menu (Luck of the Draw is an awesome and cheap way to try something new) and cocktail menu, their food is consistently good. They have my favorite Greek salad in town, and I usually pair it with their Greek spaghetti with vegetables. The calzones and pizza are yummy, and the pita pizza is a delicious entree for a casual lunch. I like that there's an upstairs better suited for the dinner crowd and a downstairs that's more a bar, though you can get food and drink at either place. I'm writing this review since I haven't gone to the Cellar since the pandemic and I miss it so much! read more

I've come to the Cellar a handful of times over the years and it usually doesn't disappoint. It has a very casual atmosphere and you can eat upstairs for a more chill environment or head down to the cellar for a more lively, bar-type environment. I wouldn't necessarily recommend coming here with a large group because seating can be difficult and I think the servers had a hard time accommodating us when I've come here with a group, but service is otherwise decent when you come with a couple of people. The Cellar is also great for getting takeout. Drinks are very reasonably priced which is great! They have such a diverse menu that I always have a hard time picking what to get, although they do have a much more limited late-night menu. The crab ravioli is one dish that I always love to get here. It's filling and flavorful and I generally end up having some leftover (yay!). The chicken pesto pizza and pesto turkey melt are solid but the pesto could use some more flavor. Curly fries (which they're known for) and garlic bread are bomb, and I love getting them as a side to my main dish. I've gotten one of their specials, a brie grilled cheese, twice, and the first time I got it it was fantastic and perfectly done, but most recently when I had it it was under-grilled and the cheese was mostly spilling out so it was a bit disappointing. Definitely would suggest getting here early for weekend/game day meals because it gets PACKED and is difficult to get a table since it's a seat-yourself place. read more

The culture here for the waiters is to come to your table less than 4 times in your entire time, and to leave you at the table at least 15 minutes before taking your drink order. For reference, this is a small place with a good amount of waiters/waitresses, they really shouldn't be too busy to give you good service, they each only have a few tables, especially in cold weather. Me and my wife stumbled upon this place after dropping our daughter off to Virginia Tech and it was easily the best place we ate at for the week! If your in Blacksburg this is the place to eat. Wish we would've found this place before wasting our time going to Christiansburg to eat. The Spinach and Artichoke with pita bread is the BEST I've ever had! The pita bread is so soft and goes perfectly with the dip. My wife had the Mad Greek sandwich and I had the Gyro..my gyro was delicious and probably the best gyro I've ever had..however my wife's sandwich was easily the best thing I ate there. After being a loyal fan of the Cellar for years, I have to say my recent visit to the restaurant was not the eating experience I expect from this fine establishment. We ordered a large Italian sausage pizza w/ fresh mozzarella cheese and were very disappointed when the pizza came out burnt and seriously lacked tomato sauce (see picture). As a result, the pizza was dry and not too tasty. Another negative mark against the restaurant was our Italian sub - okay, you practically can't go wrong with making this sub but the Cellar did - burnt bacon on top of the tasteless processed meats! Because of this bad experience, 1 star (out of 5) is rated for the Cellar. There are plenty of restaurants around Tech and I am looking forward to trying something else! read more

We were hunting for a late-night place to fill in the cracks around all the popcorn we'd eaten at the Lyric, and the Cellar beckoned. Husband got the gyro and fries, which is my usual go-to here, but I, trying to redeem myself from popcorn overconsumption, ended up ordering the chicken souvlaki kababs with asparagus. For something so virtuous, it tasted amazing. Crisp asparagus, tender chicken, more potatoes than I could safely consume. Loved it. Unbeknownst to us, this dinner would up being our last sit-down meal in a restaurant before Covid-19 shut everything down. It was Friday, March 13, and all the TVs in the dining room were showing the original Friday the 13th movie. It was... hilarious.
