On the road, at home, doesn't matter where... I love me some jerky, baby! To say the least, I was quite overjoyed when I happened to come across Gus's Fresh Jerky in San Clemente. Let's explore... Gus's Fresh Jerky originated its jerky roots where most great jerky spots begin: on a freeway catering to the road warriors. Gus's has since expanded to two more locations (family-run by the daughter who hopes to takes over all the stores) with one holding real estate on the main shopping/dining strip of Avenida del Mar in San Clemente. It is pretty much a requirement for Angelinos to make a pit stop in San Clemente when heading to San Diego or back; which is exactly what I did when I left the City of Angels to spend a weekend in San Diego for my 41st birthday. While searching for a brunch spot; I noticed the Gus's Jerky signage and carelessly/unsafely ran across the street because I was so excited! Even though Gus's Fresh Jerky isn't large in terms of square footage; it has a little bit of everything in terms of provisions: the jerky of course, jams, honeys, crackers/snack mixes, sweets; and even cowboy hats and t-shirts. It's basically the wild wild west to a T. Upon entering, we were immediately welcomed by a female associate who was giving away seasonal jerky samples (apple pie flavor, pumpkin) alongside some regulars like garlic and spicy varietals. I can vouch that Gus's artisanal jerky is indeed satisfying in terms of selection: the flavors are unique and NOT run of the mill. This goes for the variety of other goods, as well. Gus's is simply fun to browse. But a warning: these are NOT cheap! The jerky ran $20! Although all jerky nowadays even a standard Jack Links at the super market is expensive. There was no way I could leave without making a purchase, despite the prices, so we purchased some garlic jerky and a dried cracker snack mix. Jerky tends to come in two 'styles': dry and wet. Gus's Fresh Jerky features both but I prefer wet which is exactly their Garlic jerky. I liked the jerky well enough and it did have garlic flavor -- it was too overly salty. Not bad but just not the best for $20. The main problem was the cracker mix. It was terrible and tasted very stale. I am not talking, "It is dehydrated so supposed to be dry". I'm talking we agreed it was stale tasting. We we already back on the road before we tried it so couldn't go back to exchange or return or whatever their policy would accommodate. Quite a bummer. A side note in this political climate: Gus's Fresh Jerky featured a display in their front window promoting the now-deceased Charlie Kirk. I won't say more here in terms of a political discourse as Yelp is NOT the place for such a debate and you decide what businesses you do or do not patron; but I have a right to mention it being in the display window the same way that Gus's has the right to support whomever they please. Gus's is 'cute' in terms of offerings and will probably satisfy your jerky cravings but it is a bit too salty and the cracker snack mix was stale. Just a bit of a let down based on its gourmet price point. But overall, it is solid enough if you choose to visit this business.

The entire family staff is so kind, and they'll even be so gracious as to allow me to practice my ancestral Italian language skills-- which are sadly deficient and in need of constant correction-- while shopping. I learn so much in each of my unofficial lessons when I visit, and I'm deeply grateful to the family for this kind help. I couldn't imagine a more gracious and thoughtful nor a more warm and more kind group of people to create an old fashioned and welcoming environment in the market. Franco, Donatella, and Fiammetta always treat me with such kindness. And in addition of course there are very knowledgeable about the wines and fine liqueurs which are sold there at reasonable prices. I left yesterday with two bottles of wine from my ancient homeland in Sicily and Basilicata and a bottle of Amaro that comes from my grandfather's province of Calabria. There are other things available but it hard to get away from the range of street taco options. The folks working the taqueria are amazing, having to make plates and plates of tacos. Today, one work crew had 20 taco orders in front of me. Long lines await the tacos on Tuesdays and Fridays. Despite the load, the taqueros are friendly and fast. No photos as it really isn't necessary as the food is that good.

I've only lived in San Clemente for a few months, but I love this place and have been many times. The food is great, they seem to change their menu a lot, and I especially love their cheese selection! This probably goes without saying since it's a wine bar, but the wine selection is good and small enough to not be intimidating. I was there last night and I ate a flatbread with gruyere, mushrooms, thyme, and prosciutto which was great. I also had the mac and cheese which I have basically every time. I always get it without additions- I love truffle, but truffle oil + cheese results in too much oil for me. What made last night awesome enough for me to write about is they had a blues band called the Brian Young Band or something like that and they were awesome! Totally lively and a lot of fun. Go early, because it can be hard to find a seat. read more

I've been meaning to write this for quite some time now. My family and I love the Cellar! My wife and I have come in a couple times now and each time has been extraordinary. Every time we've gone there's been fantastic live music which is a real treat if I do say so. Yes its true the atmosphere is very cozy indeed and really helps create a wonderful dining experience. We've loved everything we've eaten there so far! Our server Sherry really tied it all together for us. She was more than kind and thoroughly answered any questions we had. In my book if you don't have a good server it can really ruin a meal and Sherry went above and beyond to make sure we enjoyed our experience. I frequent The Cellar often actually. I enjoy the cheese plates & sweet potato fries the most, their food is divine. The wine I could take or leave but the atmosphere really makes the place. The service is horrible every time I go in, not to mention the pricing is a little steep. I keep telling myself not to go back but then I always find my way there again. There is always attitude from the servers or bartenders no matter which one you get. The too good for you attitude. It really is a shame. I always think it is a fluke but it happens every time. If that changed I would be in there three times as much. read more

The Cellar is hands-down my go-to in San Clemente. The vibe is always spot on--cozy, friendly, and full of charm. Their cheese board is my favorite thing on the menu--always fresh, generous, and perfect to share over a glass (or two) of wine. Speaking of wine, their selection is seriously impressive. Whether you're into reds, whites, or bubbles, they've got you covered. Happy hour is a total steal, and the live music nights are the best--great local talent in a super laid-back setting. This is not the place that you want to go to if you are on a diet. The food is delicious. If you are health fanatic this place will not suit you. But if you want to let your hair out, have some fun with friends or even a romantic dinner with your loved one and/or family. The place gets quite crowded at times but it's worth the visit. Ordered their chicken curry "family meal" for delivery, as we have a full house during this social distancing and needed a break from cooking. What a great way to support local restaurants and their staff in this questionable time! The food was amazing - Mac n cheese and Caesar salad on the side, and got the chocolate chip sea salt cookies for desert, arrived hot and on time. We will absolutely do this again. excellent cheese platter. they bring you about 4 or 5 different types of cheeses and pair them each with something different. The blue cheese was paired with honey, it was great. One type (i forget which) was paired with bell pepper. This place is excellent. On the weekends they have live music, but make sure to get there early because the tables fill up quick. This is the worst business ever. I had a double charge on my credit card. When I called them to let them know they were aggressive and told me to call the bank and they can't do anything. After reading some other reviews that say similar sentiments (like the food isn't that good) and yet giving 4 stars (customers need to be honest, that is false advertising). We won't be back. My short rib thing was doused in maybe a pound of sour cream, potatoes weren't warm and they were firm, short rib was not warm or tender. Avoid. Also, the avocado toast the next day. Radishes? Asparagus? Arugula? And a cold poached egg? Just give me the basics. The prices are not astronomical but the food is not enjoyable, at all. People are nice and food comes quick.
