I haven't eaten a Maid Rite burger in over 50 years! So I ate 2 of them! These are an Iowa favorite and were a real treat when I lived in Iowa as a kid. Basically they are steamed ground beef on a bun. Ketchup, Mustard and Pickles if you want, I ate mine plain just as I remember doing all those years ago. It's an old fashioned place that serves breakfast, lunch and dinner plus soft drinks and ice cream. I love em and I think everyone should try them! read more

First off -all the people complaining about bad customer service are being too sensitive. I had extremely friendly experience when ordering and while eating in, saw continued friendly service and it was busy. Ordered the Original w/everything and the tenderloin *plain. I was driving back to Kansas City from Chicago and remembered seeing Maid-Rite on one of the Food Channel shows many years ago and knew it was an old Iowa institution. I looked up and found a location that was on my route and was able to perfectly time my lunch. All I remember from the food show was that the sandwiches were "loose meat" sort of like sloppy joes, but no sauce. I ordered the Cheese Rite (classic with cheese) and fries. The flavor was good and it really is just a simple sandwich with great seasoning, but there isn't much too it. Clearly it remains a local favorite based on the number of people already there around 11:00. I give a solid 3.5 stars. It was a good and reasonably priced lunch from a local establishment that has stood the test of time and I would definitely recommend trying at least one when in Iowa. read more

I am very spoiled with maid rites in Marshalltown Iowa and was excited that we could stop at this one while in the Des Moines area.. Went to this restaurant for the first time. The gentleman at the counter took our order. We ordered one cheese-rite sandwich, one Maid-Rite basket (drink included), and two additional drinks. The worker was upset that I placed the two additional drinks last, "his comment, now you're ordering two additional drinks." Then he provided me with the total bill, and so I proceeded to pay by my debit card by tapping, and he got upset and lecturered me because I paid by tapping, and he shook his head. I apologized for paying by tapping. we went to our table and he brought our food to us there was a straw wrapper on the table and he commented "I will pick this straw wrapper up, because it will probably end up on the floor". Overall service by employee was very poor. read more

I would give this zero stars if at all possible! The older, bald man with glasses is the rudest person I have ever dealt with! I don't know if something was bothering him but to talk to a customer as he did resulted in me walking out mid order. I first asked about the kid's Mac and cheese, inquiring if it was homemade or Kraft (because I have an eight year old who won't eat it unless it's Kraft) and he rudely responded that's a kids meal. I said I was ordering for our 8 year old, and then proceeded to order two maid-rites... he asked if I wanted anything else to which I replied no thanks, because fries don't travel well. (Just some small chat) what he said next is where I walked out. He proceeds to tell me he doesn't care where I came from or where the food was traveling to and all he needed to know is if I was done ordering! The response and attitude were so rude, and I was immediately put off! It was just my husband and myself picking up dinner to go. There was no one else waiting to place an order, they had 3-4 tables of diners who were eating and to act in such a manner will discourage me from driving over to Norwalk to pick up maid-rites again. I had never been to a Maid Rite before I visited this location. It was close to the home my grandmother was in so when I wanted something dineresque this is where I would stop or call to order. They have a daily special usually for lunch and dinner which is advertised on a sign at the front of the store and out by the street on a big sign. I have visited this location on 3 separate weeks in the last 3 months. I have always gotten things to go and usually there was a young person behind the counter. I did see the owner and while he wasn't butterflies and rainbows, he wasn't rude either. I rather enjoyed the things I ordered there. Was good for take out breakfast and lunches. Portions are decent and always hot. Their carry out containers are outstanding. They actually keep things hot and remind me of a sectioned Tupperware container. I really enjoyed the biscuits and gravy, fresh baked and very meaty gravy. Chili cheese home fries: real fresh home fried potatoes, home made chili and tons of cheese. The Maid Rite: This was my first experience with a loose meat sandwich. It sort of reminded me of a sloppy joe with out the red sauce. It was good, interesting for sure and I would get one again. I just happened to order one my last day in town. I am sure I will stop back again when I am in town. read more

Called to order for take out. First they did not have any chicken. So when we asked others ordering what they wanted instead, sales rep was super short with us. All I know is if I owned this restaurant there would be a lot of changes employee wise. A good business always treats your customers with courtesy. If I could rate as 0 I would. As stated in a ton of other reviews the man who takes your order is the most rude and insensitive person I've seen in retail/customer service. When ordering I was taking small pauses between menu items in order to make sure I was getting the order right and twice he assumed I was done ordering and interrupted me and when I said I wasn't he would make a back-hand remark like "let's try this again" and "you were finished". After dealing with his rudeness for what seemed like 1 hour I was ready to get my food and book it out of there. Then some random customer who I hadn't spoken a word to decide to start yelling political accusations at me right in front of the worker who said nothing and did nothing. The other customers near me looked at me like "I'm so sorry". Several times I asked the man to stop and leave me alone and he continued. Eventually I got so uncomfortable that I left the establishment and haven't been back. If you're reading this review do yourself a favor and never go here. I'm a life long Norwalk resident and I hope this place is shut down. Hope the owner sees this, because you run a disaster of a restaurant. Also, the food is all microwaved, I saw in the kitchen and they were just taking food out of frozen containers and putting into the microwave. read more

I love the food here and there are a couple very good employees. With that said, there are 2 men that work here that simply do not make any effort to be friendly and accommodating to customers. I believe one of them is the owner but not sure who the other one is. I walked out last time I tried to order here because the service at the counter was horrendous. I witnessed one of the above mentioned employee rudely treat two elderly women as they attempted to order. Should have walked out then but tried to order after them. The guy taking orders is just an asshole, no other way to say it. These two guys need to be better or they will continue to run customers off. read more

It's is so funny. I have never had breakfast before at maid rite so I thought I would try it. I should have read the reviews before I went there. It was like déjà. I had the same experience the other two people who posted here. The owner was totally rude, short and snappy with this comments and stone faced the entire time. I first, I also thought he got up on the wrong side of the bed, but he treated everyone that came in with the same attitude. LOL! Good hot food. Made to order. Lots of specials.This place offers at least 100 choices of homemade food. On weekends they have breakfast specials that are great deals. They have good coffee. They have good milk shakes, if you are hungry for it they probably have it. I think they could use a little TLC around the place but the food is good. read more

The absolute rudest manager/cook...whatever he is, he acts as if he hates what it is that he does....the life that he lives and the fact that he has to deal with you. I was sitting on a stool at the counter about to start eating my breakfast while watching the news, when this A-hole decides to come stand right in front of me and start filling syrup containers. He was blocking the TV entirely and then drops the lid to the Mrs. Buttersworth and it hit my plate. This d-bag proceeds to reach over and pick it up, not uttering a single word. Seriously? I have missed Maid Rite so visiting here was a treat! Yum. I guess inflation happened while I grew up, because they are $3.75 instead of $1.03. Still taste just as great though. I'm new to Norwalk and my wife and I were looking for a nice quick dinner option. I'd been here for breakfast before (which was delicious) and thought I'd try it out since I'd always liked Maid-Rite food in the past. I got the tenderloin and my wife got the maid-rite sandwich and they were both great. We also got fries which were hot, crispy, and tasty. I had a vanilla milkshake and my wife had a pineapple milkshake which she liked, but she's also pregnant and craving pineapple so take that recommendation with a grain of salt. The place is mostly self-service so don't expect to be wined and dined, though the food came out fast and the employees we interacted with were kind. Overall, this will likely become a regular place for us to grab dinner. The food is good, fairly priced, and we both enjoy the diner atmosphere. Phenomenal place to grab a bite to eat if you go in with the right expectations. read more

All I can say, and all you really need to know, is that the food is standard maidrite food, nothing special about about it, if you're into maidrite food then score 1 for you. Now, the old guy that takes your order, the one that never smiles, you either know the guy or you will, he makes you feel like you knocked over a toddler, like the minute you walked through the doors you should never have been born. The following is a letter I sent to the corporate office...more than a week earlier and I still haven't received a response! To whom it may concern: I want to let you know how deeply disappointed I am with the owner of the Maid Rite in Norwalk, Iowa. My father and I went into the location in Norwalk, Iowa to enjoy a meal around 6:45 this Sunday evening. The following is a brief synopsis of what exactly happened this evening: Walking into the restaurant my father and I waited for several minutes before being helped. ...Once the owner came to the register we began placing our order. My dad went first and once he was finished I made my order. I asked for a tenderloin and before I could finish I was interrupted and scoffed at..."Well we have three sizes" is what he snapped. I told him I wanted a regular tenderloin with a coffee and then he shot back "We are out of coffee" (it was his tone that offended me more than anything). I let out a sigh being slightly disappointed and instead of apologizing he said, "we close in ten minutes" (again saying it with much scoff and disrespect in his voice). I chose not to say anything to him after those comments. Once given our food we received no thank you or the "service with a smile" you would expect. Walking out I decided I would call and let the owner know that I thought his behavior was not only rude but frankly that he was a jerk and we would not be returning. At this point I would have thought an apology would have come but instead I received the words "FUCK YOU" on the other end of the line and then was hung up on. I cannot tell you enough How disappointing that is to hear as a customer. I was treated with disrespect I would not want to hear from my greatest enemy let alone an establishment I currently held on top as one of my favorite places to eat. I will not be returning to the Maid Rite in Norwalk and will be informing every friend, family member and stranger on the street of how I was treated tonight. My Breakfast Club chose your Norwalk, Iowa location for our Saturday morning breakfast and I just want you to know that I have never been treated so rudely in a restaurant in my entire life. Our group spent probably $200.00 to $250.00 this morning at that location and I wish I could take it back! The owner, or whomever that man is, should not be in the service industry! Norwalk doesn't have a lot of choices for breakfast! My husband and I usually ignore the owners unfriendly abrupt ordering process and have been a frequent customer. However, the last time we went was such an ordeal because I asked for some milk for my espresso. First of all two shots of espresso generally equates to more than 2 ounces in my experience. I paid over $3 for 2 ounces of espresso. I had requested a cup large enough to add cream or milk. When I inquired about the milk or cream I was pointed in the direction of non dairy creamer pods. I asked for a little bit of milk. I gestured about an inch or so with my fingers. The employee poured me about 5 inches in a small water cup. I thanked him graciously. The owner walked up and very rudely, loudly and angrily told me, you need to pay for that next time. I said I bought espresso. He said "I don't care, milk doesn't come with it. You will have to pay for a latte next time." I said I just asked for a very small amount, I didn't need this much. He said "It's too late now, I can't pour it back in the jug". I said I would pay for it, he threw his hands up and very rudely said you just need to order a latte next time. He then walked away. I only selected one star because zero stars is not an option. I have never been treated so poorly at an establishment. If rudeness is your thing, this is the place for you! read more
