The worst experience ever. We were sat in the middle of a standing group of people. They were standing around talking and drinking. Talking across our table to their friends, one guy even gives his friend the finger stretching over our table. People kept putting their stuff in the table while we were eating. Their we so many people in the place they had to be over the maximum limit of people for fire safety. Never, ever again! read more

This place was exactly what we were looking for. Very intimate setting with tons of character. Two people greeted us before we took off our coats. Friday night love music was great and loved the local beer selections. This place is the whole package in our book. read more

I think the name of this restaurant is "I'm sorry". Oh wait that's just what the waitresses just kept saying. The atmosphere was really cute and I loved not the inside and the outside but I just wasn't feeling it. Food was only ok. For some reason if you eat outside you get a restricted menu, not sure why that is. Fish and chips was alright, I've had better and worst. They kept apologizing for having us wait to order, wait for the drinks, wait for the food, wait for our condiments, ask for the check, wait for the check etc. don't you know, I'm sorry means nothing if you don't change your ways! The girls were really really nice but clearly just a lot of people so it was an underwhelming experience. Would give it another try, hoping it's better on a week night. read more

I went again after the experience with the waitress and still didn't feel very comfortable. It's too bad because the inside is really cool and lots of folks love to go there. My family and I were headed to Gillette Stadium for the Coldplay concert and this place was recommended to us by a friend. We had the chicken parm, cowboy burger, Callan steak and fried fish and whole belly clam special. Everything was cooked to perfection and the taste was outstanding. The staff were very friendly and service was great. We highly recommend this place if you are ever in the area. read more

Mediocre food. This place was booming on Saturday night. We got there around 7with friends and had to wait about 20 min to be seated. You can wait in the bar area. We got potato skins for an appetizer. They were fine, nothing special. You do get soda bread which was actually good with butter. I ordered a turkey club, I've definitely had better...it was just blah. The fries were good. My husband was disappointed with his bangers and mash. It was 4 breakfast sausages, mashed potatoes, gravy and beans....for ....wait for it...$17. Overpriced. The service was excellent even for a slammed night. I'm not sure what to make of our experience yesterday. That's why the three stars I guess. I thought it would be a great place to visit as I remember a friend boasting about his time there. One of the items he spoke of so fondly was the bucket of steamers. Now I do love steamers, but the wife didn't want any and I can't eat a whole bucket myself. In hindsight, I should have spent the $27 and taken what I couldn't finish home to put over some nice Angel Hair Pasta! One of the apps I saw pass by a few times was the Waterford Rings. Still quite a big portion for one person, but I figured my wife would have a few. I asked for them cajun style and my wife ordered the New England Clam Chowder. Her Chowder was cold and the Rings had no cajun seasoning so both had to be adjusted. For our entrees, she ordered Fish and Chips that looked and tasted like pre frozen, but she enjoyed it, that's the goal, right? Then, you see a special section of any menu where the headline reads Pub Favorites, you would think...hmm, these are their specialties, right? After all, if you go to a great steak house, you don't order chicken. So, I order the Liver and Onions. I am a huge fan! And then to be able to add bacon?!! The bacon was good, the onions weren't caramelized properly, and the squash was tasty. The mashed potatoes were a bit dry but ok. The liver was a bit overcooked and dry. We were treated well, the servers and manager were very professional and pleasant. Unfortunately, I chose to be alchohol free yesterday. There are certainly a few beers I would have liked to sample. I tried out the Chieftain Pub in Plainville, MA about a week ago with my boyfriend after a day of Christmas shopping at the Emerald Square Mall. It's about a 15 minute drive from the mall, so certainly convenient to the area. When we got there, we were told there was about a 30 minute wait, which was ok with us. The host was incredibly accommodating, ensuring everyone got a spot they wanted (at the bar, in a booth in the dining room, etc.) and kept it all straight while consistently checking in so we never felt forgotten. The decor was a cozy, pub style - funky trinkets adorned all the walls; it had a family vibe that you could bring your grandparents to, but also had a darker, bar side that seemed totally cool for a night out with friends if you're staying in the suburbs. We ordered the clam cakes and New England clam chowder appetizer, it was decently priced, around $11, and was well worth it! It came with four large, golden brown, crispy-yet-creamy clam cakes that were generous with the clams! The chowder was equally excellent with hearty chunks of potatoes and plenty of clams. For our entrees, I got the Fish & Chips and my boyfriend got the Fried Oysters. These were both incredible! The fish was perfectly cooked, flaky and the batter crisp. After eating tons of fish & chips on the Vineyard this past summer, I know I've had excellent fried white fish and this was comparable. My boyfriend's oysters were also amazing, crispy and sweet, not chewy at all. We also got a stray piece of fried calamari on his plate and that too was delicious, no chewy, overcooked seafood in sight! Paired with their tartar sauce, which I'm pretty sure is homemade, the food was outstanding. My one complaint? The drinks. Since it is a pub, I expected a variety of beer choices and perhaps a few cocktails. I ordered a Blue Moon and it just tasted flat, not fresh. Perhaps I had just gotten the end of the tap, but it was underwhelming, as was the beer/alcohol available. I got a cocktail, a grapefruit one, and that too was just okay. So food YES! Drinks? Meh. I'll definitely be coming back and we have certainly spread the word about this seafood gem hidden in Plainville!! read more

Fabulously yummy Irish pub fare! We've been to The Chieftain a few times, even bringing family visiting from out of town to check it out. One delicious experience after the other! Some family favorites include the shepherd's pie, Guinness stew, fish & chips, and baked stuff shrimp (OMG yummy!!) We keep coming back to sample everything on the menu, and last time tried one of their specials, the prime rib, which was delicious. And the Irish soda bread that comes before the food is very satisfying. Decor is Irish-kitschy and it works for the theme of the pub, nice skylight area on the quieter "sit down" part, with lots of knickknacks hanging from the ceiling. Keeps you busy while you wait for the food. Service is not the most prompt I've experienced, but once they arrive with the bread and later with the food you kind of forget how long it took to get a glass of water. Its been a while since I found myself down in the area and at the Chieftain. But, I was out doing some Christmas shopping this afternoon and found myself driving by so I stopped in for lunch. This place is just a warm and cozy place to grab a great beer and even better comfort food. It's cold outside today so Ib went with their Guinness Stew with a side of Irish Soda Bread and butter. God almighty, did it ever hit the spot. Perfectly cooked tender pieces of beef with stewed veggies over mashed potatoes. Top it off with a cold Guinness draft and I was ready to head back outside into the cold. What a great way to finish off the day of shopping. Service was PERFECT! No long wait, a smiling and very happy waitress made me feel right at home. Love this place and will take the drive to go back soon. read more

My family and I have been there several times and have never been completely satisfied with our meals. We always get a bucket of steamers but they are ridiculously priced. I always try to get a classic meal and even the chowder and clam cakes are horrible. If you are in the mood for some seafood do not go there. read more

First off, this isn't really Irish pub fare , Just because you call it Guinness stew doesn't mean it's Irish . Review is for 2 Visits. Visit #1 - Great place , food good and lots of good beers on draught. Good atmosphere, waitress good . Would've given 4+ stars but then we went back on St Patty's day weekend. .... Visit #2- 45 minute wait which is ok , it was the patron saint of Ireland's day so , understandable . Ended up sitting at bar on the quiet side . Took waitress like 10 minutes to even acknowledge we were there and we were sitting directly in front of glass dishwasher. Strike 1 - gave us some Irish bread , NO silverware( we wiped butter from foil packs onto bread) Strike 2 - ordered food (still no silverware I might add) I realize this isn't fine dining but basic eating utensils is a must ! Food arrived- Fish and chips , fish was Soggy and brown not Crispy and white . Strikes 3&4 . The only good part was that we didn't spend a ton of money . 2 stars is high because couldn't figure out how to rate 1/2 star . read more

The sign on the door stating that sleeves are required should have been our first clue, but we went in, anyway. Not much selection on the menu, missing what I would have considered mandatory Irish Pub fare. More importantly, the food was inedible - RAW chicken wings (ok, the wingettes were simply flabby-skinned but the larger drumettes were flabby, raw and totally red near the bone). The last time I was here was a few years ago so this is an older review but I was surprised to see it is rated 4 stars. Waitress was nice. Food-gross. Mashed potatoes were undercooked and lumpy, peas were from a can. Stuffed shrimp nasty stuffing. Waitress asked how everything was and I told her that the shrimps stuffing was not good and potatoes were lumpy. The manager came over and asked rudely what the problem is. I told her and she said "First of all you ate most of the shrimp (just not the stuffing) and I tasted the potatoes myself and they're fine so I don't know what you want!" We didn't "want" anything. The waitress asked and I answered honestly. We certainly were not looking for a free meal. We paid tipped waitress 20% and never returned. Food blah, management rude. read more

My first trip to the Chieftain Pub prompted me to finally register for Yelp and write a review. A small and unassuming place, The Chieftain is an irish themed pub with solid food for very reasonable prices. You can pick up standard pub far like burgers or go for classic UK choices like Fish and Chips or Bangers and mash. The fish and chips were perfect. Very light batter served crispy and hot. The Clam Chowder and Clam cakes are also worth noting. We left before the live music began, but the line out the door was a pretty good idicator that this is the place to be on a Saturday night. My only knock is the place fills up fast and quickly overwhelms the cooling system. Prepare to be cozy and a little warm. read more

Your Irish pub outside of Boston. Might not be a Kinsale or Black Rose, but out here in No Man's Land...it's the next best thing. I've gone for lunch and have not had the opportunity to hit the live bands or jammin' weekend evenings. So I can only share my friends experience and I've heard it's a "wild" time. For lunch, I LOVE their buffalo wings. The fried clams with bellies is a hit or miss b/c sometimes the bellies are too big and can be nasty taking down even fried. Almost like a prego clam going south if you know what I mean. Their drafts are irish dedicated with guiness and o'hara's so extra stars for their selection of beer. read more

They are absolutely delicious, plentiful, clean and served in a huge bucket with broth and butter for dipping. I've never in my life thought steamers would be something I'd order out at a restaurant but the Chieftain proved me wrong! This is definitely a fun little pub featuring a variety of beer (and Magners!) on tap and live Irish music on the weekends. A bit small and cramped, and the wait for a table tends to be pretty long, but if you can snag a seat at the bar or if you don't mind waiting/standing, it's a fun place to hang and eat, drink and be merry! read more

A nice homey slice of Ireland in Plainville. The staff are always smiling and friendly and they make a strong Jack and Ginger. I love the wood cabin/pub feel of the place and I like checking out all the photos and plaques from Ireland on the walls. The food is always good and I'm a big fan of their Steak Salad as well as their Shepherd's Pie. Also, the soda bread with raisins is buttery and delicious. Don't forget to order an ice cold Magners! Steamers? Gross! Totally regretted ordering that as its not cheap, but did bc of yelp reviews. I don't get it! They almost made me sick. Gritty bc of sand, chewy w/fishy taste & smelled like socks. I like seafood & this was bad. Others at the table got: prime rib (not bad), steak (chewy/tough), stuffed chicken (dry). When the food came out, there suddenly were like, a swarm of large black flies all over us! Even grosser! We noticed the flies landing on other ppl's drinks/food. We had to huddle & swat above our food to keep them off! Hate to think how dirty the bar & kitchen is... or how many flies we didnt see that were out back. Ridiculous! You know what flies like... sh*t.... ew. When the waitress came to ask how things were, I was actively swatting above my food & said, "fine, except for these flies!" No response. She just walked away. The only thing decent was the Guinness I had & the fried oysters w/fries we had as appetizers. I won't b back. I don't understand the high ratings. I stopped in here last night for steamers (steamed clams) and baked stuffed shrimp. Outstanding! Huge bucket (like you'd use for washing the floor) of clams for only $22.95, served with butter and broth. (Back in California, if we can find steamers, we get about 12 clams for about $12.00.) The baked stuffed shrimp (something else that we can't get in California) came with four delicious large shrimp with a tasty bread/seafood stuffing. Other times I've had baked stuffed at other places, they were swimming in butter. Not here. There was just enough butter for flavor, but the shrimp weren't the least bit greasy. The place was a little bit loud for my taste, but it is an Irish pub. The front area is a little bit quieter than the bar. read more

Sauntering in for a late lunch, by which time I was very, very hungry, I had every expectation of a fairly quick meal. The waitress quickly brought me a water, but took more than 10 minutes before returning. She seemed to think I was waiting on someone else. Fortunately, the Shepherd's Pie on the menu was actually available, so I ordered that (of course!). At least a half hour later, a period during which I never saw my waitress, I heard a waitress deliver Shepherd's Pie to the table behind me. A table that arrived after I did. After mentioning this to their waitress, who seemed to have replaced my original waitress in the room, she brought me a hot Shepherd's Pie within a few minutes. IT WAS SCRUMPTIOUS! Delicious, really, although there was a small-potato-sized unmashed potato in the mash. I ate around it, no big deal. The waitress cut my bill in half (for my trouble) which was the right thing to do, especially since I hadn't asked or made a fuss. Kudos to her for gracefully handling the situation. I saw my original waitress on the way out (and hour after I initially ordered). "Katie" was the name on my ticket, but I'm not sure which was which. I'd gladly return to Chieftain Pub. The food was great. Half the service was terrific. And the decor and food offerings were appealing. The outside deck looks inviting to, for when it's warmer! read more

I would return in a heartbeat. Staff was fantastic from the time you walked in the door to the time you left your table and started walking out the door. We came in for a late lunch, great specials on the menu so we did two Irish Sloppy Joe's (cornbeef on a hamburger bun with .... with whatever it came with.. ) It was great, fries, decent prices and a nice beer to get me heading out the door. 4 stars for a pub. That is what it is and it isn't trying to be anything else really. Don't go in here expecting some sort of culinary experience. Decent basic food is what you will get. Husband and I both had the Blademeat sandwich and it was nice and spicy. In laws had club and tuna wrap and they were happy with them. Again, they got basic food not seeking anything fancy. I can never understand people with whacked out expectations for food in a pub. Now, what bumps this up to 4 stars, atmosphere, friendly staff, and good beer selections. Gotta go back for the music. Awesome pub not too far from Route 1 cinema pub and the Wrentham Outlets. This means that I now have a good go-to spot to eat/drink when I'm in that area which is fantastic. After two years or so of passing the place by and saying to my husband "we should really go there one day" we finally went. It was rather busy for being before six but we shortly were seated in the bar area (per our request). It turned out they were holding a Guinness promotion where if you purchased a pint of the back stuff, you got an engraved "gravity" glass for free. Not a bad introduction to the Chieftain. Our meal began by us scarfing down the complimentary bread (OMG the best soda bread) and trying to pick among all the delicious sounding sandwiches, traditional Irish dishes, and their many seafood entrees. They are known for their steamers but we decided to pass for this time. I instead decided on another seafood meal entailing of their mussels app. The mussels were plentiful and were cooked in white wine and onions. So yum. My husband had the boom boom burger which he enjoyed but said wasn't as spicy as he would have liked. Their fries were pretty tasty as well. Their beer selection was somewhat decent but most importantly was that they poured an awesome Guinness at a good price. Service was fast and friendly throughout the evening, even when I had to ask a bunch of questions regarding how the promotion worked. The music consisted of Irish tunes both new and traditional. Best damn potato skin appetizer I've ever had. I'm pretty sure someone actually sliced up fresh potatoes in the back for our order. That said, my friend and I ordered the Dublin Chicken Pasta and Bangers 'n' Mash. The pasta was $12 and pretty good. The Bangers and Mash (and free bread) reminded me of food I'd eaten in Ireland. The mashed potatoes were great, I'd bet they were made from boiled potatoes and not bags or boxes. All in all, priced right and certainly worthy of a stop. Their website has the menu. read more

We have a friend who was born and raised in Ireland and swears by this place. The soda bread is made daily by one of the owners (who is indeed from Ireland). It's some of the best bread I have ever eaten...EVER. And I eat a lot of bread! There aren't many options for a vegetarian, but I was able to ask for a pasta dish without meat. It wasn't really that good, but I'm still giving it four stars because this place is Irish not Italian and I really can't judge it on the quality of their pasta! The prices are very reasonable. Chieftain Pub is an Irish pub with a homestyle feel. The bread is made in house and is delicious. Our hostess even had a legit Irish accent, which was quite surprising - in a good way! Plenty of miscellaneous paraphernalia adorned the walls and the bar was beautiful. There were many dinner options, and I found it hard to choose one. I choose the Crispy Shrimp Wraps for an appetizer and the Boom Boom Burger (Boom Boom hot sauce on the side). Delicious! They had a great selection of $7 wine glasses, and the pour was GENEROUS. At the end of the night, my friend and I wanted to split a glass, and they were happy to oblige. Good eats! read more

Doesn't take long for this place to fill up. But it does so because it's good. I love their Sheppard Pie...and if you like a little heat, the Blade Meat Sandwich is great.
