First, he was really great about walking me through everything with the chimney itself (plus he's a nice guy to boot!). I found "MARK" after 2 previous Chimney Companies quoted us between $3000-$5000 in the past 2 years to get the fireplace into safe and working condition. We were shocked about the high quotes and a bit skeptical. This came at a time where the vintage heater ( I think it was original and very old) broke down too and needed to be replaced. One problem at a time & We did not use it since then & had it covered up. I gave it another try this month since I miss a fireplace burning during the Hollidays. I came across the reviews for MARK - THE L.A. SWEEP and called for a inspection and cleaning ($189) to hear his thoughts on our chimney dilemma and if he would confirm the previous quotes or not. Mark was able to schedule us in quickly and showed up punctual. He was very professional with lots of knowledgeable and took his time to inspect and clean the chimney very thoroughly . He advised about the upkeep and gave us helpful info on logs vs. wood etc. which was very informative. After the inspection following was shared with us: *We need 2 Chimney Caps since they were missing and he installed them after the inspection. ($129 each) *A Damper was missing and he noted this on his report for future installation option for a reasonable price. ($399) Nothing close to the quotes the other companies gave us at all, instead we got an honest breakdown on what is needed and suggested with reasonable prices. Mark is very personable, honest & funny and made the whole experience easy while getting our fireplace back to working and safe conditions. Mark was extremely honest timely and reliable. After 2 estimates pushing 3k Mark offered to come inspect at no charge! Upon inspection he in so many words told me the others estimates were BS and I could fix this issue for $129 by replacing the log lighter with a new wood burning lighter and move if further back. That would fix my issue of having smoke come fill inside the room. He came back the next week did the repairs and my fireplace has been working like a dream ever since! Mark came by our house today and did the cleaning and inspection of our fireplace which we had never had someone come to service in the 15 years we've been here. He identified and fixed an issue (sealing a gas line). Put the gas logs into the right configuration (who knew?) for optimal air flow, told us that this fireplace could also take wood fires (and would then require yearly cleaning besides us cleaning out the firebox after use). Very pleased with the price and the service. I had gotten a price from another company about a month ago, that was obviously geared to a different kind of homeowner and was way more than what I wanted to do. When I bought my new home, a different chimney inspector suggested 5k worth of repairs. Mark explained old chimneys don't have to be retrofitted to contemporary standards to work properly. Instead he was able to perform less costly fixes that we knew would benefit us, like putting on a proper rain cap to protect against water damage, and installing a damper to stop drafts and save energy. The job ended up more trouble than expected because of a previous DIY cover and loose bricks underneath, so he fixed the crown with cement. He takes a lot of pride in his work. read more

Um, wow. Mark was honest, professional, and extremely thorough. Six years ago another company told me I could harm my family if I did not complete about $4000 in repairs to my chimney, so I have not used my fireplace since (I don't have $4000 lying around). Mark looked over the recommendations that were given to me and showed me that most of them couldn't have even been determined without pulling the whole top off the chimney, something that definitely wasn't done. A few of the recommendations were legit; the rest was all invention. Bottom line, he is going to do some much more minor repairs at about a tenth the estimate I was given by the other company. Mark was great. We had just gotten a $299 cleaning from another big chimney company and that part was fine, but when the bid came from the central office listing what needed to be fixed in our 90+ year old chimney, it was for over $7000! We asked Mark to inspect the chimney ($99) to get a second opinion, and he suggested we didn't need to build a new fireback or coat the inside of the chimney with the fire safe materials the other company was pitching. Mark pointed out we had a big fireplace and a relatively small flue, so coating it would only make it smaller and the brick mortar was in good enough shape not to need it. He added a spark arrestor/rain guard on the roof and patched a few cracks in the fire back (which he said was backed by another set of bricks, so not essential (but we felt better doing it), all for about $477 (including his inspection fee--considerably less than $7000), and we've been enjoying many nights of smoke free and worry free fires since. read more
