I visited for the first time today with my friends and immediately felt so welcomed and was in awe of all the unique flavors to pick from! The employee who had pink braids was so wonderful and patient as we picked out which flavors to sample. I love places that do samples since I don't want to gamble on an ice cream flavor. It ensures whatever I pick, I absolutely love. Mango sticky rice was immediately so delicious and I got a scoop on a cone. Such a unique and appetizing flavor!! The interior was also very colorful and vibrant with lots of pink decor, my favorite color, and stories of van Leeuwen's origin. I scream for ice cream! I'm in love! I get a little too excited for ice cream, and the server was so kind and let me try a few samples. There were several flavors that I was eyeing, but I went for the honeycomb. Best decision! It had actual honey inside, and it wasn't overwhelmingly sweet - but sweet enough for ice cream! A post dinner treat for myself! Van Leeuwen does a great job of advertising online, so when I walked past I was drawn in by the memory and the bright pink of their store walls. Service was exceptionally quick. I was able to try Dirty Chai (specialty flavor), Marionberry Cheesecake, Earl Grey, and Honeycomb and order a scoop of the Earl Grey in just 5 minutes. All of the flavors are quite strong, so I would say try flavors you might like if they were stronger. Overall it was a lovely ice cream experience, but $8+ for a scoop is a bit atrocious, even in DC. read more

I had a scoop of praline butter cake and a scoop of cookies and cream. I tried three other ice cream flavors but wasn't thrilled by any of the (vegan peanut butter brownie honeycomb, bigface coffee affogato, and brown sugar cookie dough brownie). The praline butter cake and cookies and cream were good- very sweet and creamy! The ice cream was fine but the customer service was excellent. Aniya helped us and she was so patient. I am GLUTEN FREE and DAIRY FREE and they have options for both. I ended up getting a brownie vegan milk shake. The ice cream was good and the girl at the register was nice as well. They have the flavors in pints as well if you wanted to buy some to go. The inside was cute and pink. Very aesthetic. It would be good for a cute date or meet up. I'm pretty sure I saw a few. There are a couple of locations. There's one in Adams Morgan and one in Georgetown. The Adams Morgan location does have seating inside and the area it's in there are a lot of places to walk to and go after. read more

We were up for some luxury ice cream to close out the month of July. We first considered getting two cones, but instead focused on the pre-made quart of chocolate chip cookie dough. Besides we didn't really have the time to stay at the ice cream parlor. Although it seems pretty chill inside, and there are plenty of places to sit. The service was fast and heerful and the small line moved quickly. I wish we could get ice cream here all of the time, but there are calorie intake things that we are focused on, especially during the summer. Good ice cream jere! read more

First let me just say this location is on 14th street and the service was SPECTACULAR! I love that they allow you to sample as many flavors you would like. I enjoyed all of the ones I sampled. They offer both vegan and non vegan options and it's sold inside of the grocery stores. The prices are very reasonable and the scoops you get. It smells so good when you walk inside. They have outdoor seating too. It's clean. Love no bugs are flying around inside. Definitely going back to treat my students and kids to ice cream. read more

My first time in DC and I was walking around the neighborhood and ran into this ice cream shop! The place is absolutely adorable. I can't begin to share my excitement when I saw all of the dairy-free flavors! Coming from a smaller city, I'm used to very limited vegan options that are almost always sorbet. Imagine my excitement seeing actual ice cream that I can eat! All of the flavors were great, and I went with the sweet potato and marshmallow. A unique choice that packed a ton of great flavor! I was a bit weary about the price of a small, but they end up giving you a decent amount of ice cream. Definitely worth it and so great that they are open late! read more

Falling short of amazing, this unique brand of ice cream has great taste with some to desire. It does everything right with taste and consistency, but fails to capture my interest. I ask myself why this ice cream shop and not the others down the street. The price was pretty high and the flavors were there, but I felt I was paying more for a brand name rather than costumer experience, ambiance of place, or uniqueness. I think I might have expected more give this brand is really good from the store. I do recommend checking them out and seeing it in person. So happy to have a new ice cream spot in Adams Morgan! I stopped by after happy hour one day and I'm so happy I did. I had never had Van Leeuwen ice cream but I knew they had some high quality flavors to offer. There was a line but it went by quickly. Van Leeuwen is a New York-based ice cream company that has just opened up a few outposts in DC. I was really happy to see them open one in Adams Morgan, about a mile from my home. I went on a Saturday, as my boyfriend and I wanted to grab dinner at one of our favorite restaurants and then get dessert at Van Leeuwen, just up the street. The store seems designed to minimize crowding in front of the ice cream counter, and there's more seating here than in some locations I've been to. (There's also a streeterie outside, but I suspect that's for another restaurant and not for patrons of Van Leeuwen.) It also appears to offer more vegan options than other locations, but that could be their changing menu. The vegan options are made from cashew and/or oat milk, which provides a certain creaminess that may be lacking in other plant milks. Like all Van Leeuwen locations, there are also pints of ice cream and ice cream bars available for purchase, so bring a cooler with you. Because of this, Van Leeuwen is rapidly becoming one of my favorite ice cream places. read more

It was not open when they said it would be on 4/5 at 11. It was dark inside so don't think they planned to be open. No sign on the door or anything. The sugar cookie dough pieces were soft and not too sweet. The brown sugar and brownie tasted slightly cakey. The combination was fine but not very unique. I've tried other DDL lattes from other coffee shops around the city and this one is by far the best. It's good hot and iced. The seasonal strawberry matcha is also very good. This place is great for the seasonal drinks and gelato flavors using local ingredients. My absolute favorite seasonal flavor is the Blackberries and Cream gelato. I ate it so much last summer that I could see the color of the gelato get darker as the season progressed and as the berries reached their peak. I got a few hand packed pints to keep in the freezer but they didn't last long. The mascarpone & berries is my favorite classic flavor. I've been to every Dolcezza location in DC and my favorite is the DuPont location. The baristas are chill and somehow their drinks taste better than the other locations. Not sure how that's possible but I notice a difference. I think it has something to do with how the drink order is entered at the register. At another location, I noticed my DDL latte was entered as a latte with DDL syrup and it was noticeably off. Not sweet at all. When I asked the barista he said there was no DDL button but at DuPont the drink is perfect every time. I'm not usually focused on nitpicking but if I'm paying $10 for a coffee, I expect the taste to be consistent regardless of location. Back to DuPont. This location has decent seating but definitely isn't appropriate for longer study sessions during busy times. There's a large communal table and bar style seating along the front window that is great for people watching (or construction watching). It's conveniently located, about a 10 minute walk away from the DuPont metro. Is Dolcezza expensive? Yes. Will I continue to use my discretionary income on $10 coffee and gelato. Yes, because it makes me happy and it's an act of self care.

Staff is great and will ask if you want to try and flavors. Gelato is fresh and you can taste the quality. It's almost rich, the taste is definitely better than other local chains. The consistency is just the right amount of thick. I wish there was more flavor variety from time to time, but there is no sacrificing quality because of this! The best summer treat you'll find!

All good things! 1. Appearance of the Venue This spot has a really cool, old-school ice cream parlor vibe. It feels traditional, welcoming and exactly what you want a neighborhood ice cream shop. 2. Service The service here was great and very friendly. We were traveling in a large group, and the staff was able to accommodate all of us in a very timely manner. Which we really appreciated since we were on our way to a destination and had other family members meeting us at the metro station. Thanks to their quick service, we didn't keep anyone waiting. 3. The Ice Cream As a Wisconsinite, I am a bit of an ice cream and custard snob being from the dairy state! While it doesn't quite match up to Wisconsin's Custard (IYKYK), I will say it was good ice cream and definitely tasted better than some I've had in other states. This made the spontaneous stop worth it. They offer several fantastic flavors of hand dipped ice cream. I ordered the salted caramel in a cake cone. The ice cream was really good. It was rich and flavorful. Not too salty either. It is wonderful to find a great local spot while traveling as I always love supporting small businesses. Here you go asking me again, will I return? I paid $8 for a single scoop of sorbet on a cone. The service was definitely top tier which is why I am giving it four stars, i just wish they had more vegan or non dairy options. They only had raspberry and mango sorbet to choose from .

It's hard to find a solid, not too sweet chocolate, so this was perfect. I had it in a waffle cone, which was so fresh and so crispy.

Since there are no Jeni's near where I live (yet), I have more reasons to visit local stores that carry their pints.

I've found the soft serve to be better than the hard ice cream, but it almost has too creamy of a texture. The yogurt soft serve flavor with cardamom was the best thing I've tasted there. The ambiance is fine, there is a small patio for warm days. The last time I was there the inside smelled like sewage, eeek!

Although probably first established while Friends was still on the air, Tryst has kept up with the comings and goings of Adams Morgan, reiterating itself with changes in the local culture and the arts, which are often on display. The staff is super friendly; you can either order from the counter if you're taking your order to go or just snag a spot and wait for the servers to make their way to you.
