First of all it's worth the drive. I have been here a few times. Never had a dessert. But I have had their burgers and fries. Very enjoyable. The service is always friendly and gives you a small town feel. This evening we had dessert. I had the salty caramel in a shake form. And you get the leftovers ;). It wasn't knock your socks off but it was really good. Wife had the chocolate sundae. The flavors are very tasty. The only issue is the hot fudge and toppings were on the bottom. What a great find in a cool small town! My wife and I both had the tenderloin and it was unlike any tenderloin I've had before. The tenderloin is marinated overnight and then lightly breaded and grilled on a flat top to give you a nice juicy meat flavor forward sandwich. Usually all you can taste with a tenderloin is the breading. We both had fries and they were crispy and fresh tasting. To top it off I had a childhood favorite a cherry phosphate. It was delicious and brought back lots of memories. We were both full from our lunch but wanted dessert so we got a couple pints of ice cream to go and boy were they delicious. I found out about this restaurant in a book "Dining Secrets of Indiana" that was given to me as a gift. So when I decided to explore northern Wayne County and Randolph County, this was the first place I bookmarked. Literally located on Main Street, the restaurant occupies a gorgeous and historic building on the corner. (Sorry, no stoplight to use as a reference point). Inside, the restaurant has a front and rear dining room, with the ice cream counter and cashier counter on the left. I was directed to sit anywhere I liked in the front room and was brought a menu for food and one for ice cream. The waitress was very helpful in suggesting the items that are the best/most popular from the list of sandwiches, burgers, soups, and salads. I usually drink water with my meal to keep calories down, and to have more money to spend on my meal. But when I saw this place offered Green River Phosphates, I had to get one. I grew up in a small town and our local drug store had a soda fountain where I could order one of these drinks. Emerald green in color, the lemon lime flavor is just a bit different from the other mass produced brands. I like it best! I also decided to go with the special hand breaded Tenderloin that is seasoned with their own "Moose" seasoning and coated in crushed crackers before being grilled. These tenderloins are not pounded flat like a fritter. Instead, they are left about a half inch thick and fit the bun a lot better. The flavor was great! Lots of combined flavors held up with the lettuce, tomato, mayo, and mustard I added. I would highly recommend! I was a bit disappointed with the house made chips. They deep fry them as ordered. However, I think they overloaded the basket since the chips looked done, but about half remained soggy without crisping. Those tend to hold the oil taste and were left unfinished. The service was close to full service with the exception that when the bill is brought, you pay at the counter. My waitress was friendly, helpful, and checked in to make sure the flavor of the sandwich was good (that was before I got to the flimsy chips). The interior has lots of memorabilia and photos on the walls to give it some of the small town charm. I would like to return to try one of their burger/bacon combos that are topped with onion rings. The food is always good. You can't go wrong with the pork tenderloin sandwich. The steak fries are good as well, and their Cole slaw is pretty darn good. However, the service is horrible. The waitresses stand around and barely wait on the customers. We had to walk up and ask for our drinks, ask for straws, and we had to get our own silverware. No one came around and asked us if we wanted refills. They also put the coke slaw which was ordered as a side, on top of my aunts tenderloin sandwich. Good grief. read more

When I finally asked if I could just sit at the counter, the response was merely "wait a minute." Not even a hello, welcome or we'll be right woth you. It is fully of Coca Cola and 50's and 60's throwback items, with high ceilings and leather booths. We only came for dessert, but the smell from the grill made me wish we were there for lunch! The ice creams are tasty and the price is right. I ordered a kid's scoop of coconut ice cream. I wish I would have got more! The coconut was a strong flavor and the ice cream was super smooth and creamy. The price tag was the best part - less than a dollar! Make sure you bring cash for small orders, they don't take cash if your order is less than a certain amount (I think it's $5). The restaurant opened under new owners several weeks ago, but has already lost our business. We stopped in last night with another couple. Server did not know the menu or how to work the ordering device. Drinks took long time to come. My husband and my sandwiches and an order of fries arrived. But other couple orders never came. My husband motioned to our server and asked about their meals. Server said we are out of those items and walked away. No apologies, no can we get you something else. The Chocolate Moose gets five stars just for the fact that they serve Green River. Do you know how hard it is to get Green River in these parts!? I hadn't had it in 10 years and was tickled as all-get-out to see it on the menu. Everything else is fantastic as well. I went with the cheeseburger, while my parents stuck with their favorite, breaded tenderloins (I tried a bite and it was excellent). The cheeseburger was very high-quality and fresh tasting, and the sweet potato fries were great. My three-year-old son had the grilled cheese... it looked like it was served on nine-grain bread. Nice touch. The strawberry shortcake I shared with my mom was delicious. Our server, Marcie (I think) was wonderful with my little boy, taking him over to let him see what kind of ice cream flavors they had. The restaurant is not very large, but it stays consistently busy, so you may have to wait a few minutes for a table. Trust me, The Chocolate Moose is worth it. This is my all time favorite place to go with my family! My favorite thing on the menu is their delicious mushroom Swiss cheese burger with awesome homemade chips! They also have an award winning double bacon cheeseburger, delicious ice cream, a soda fountain, good prices, high quality food, the service is always quick, and the wait staff is helpful and always cheerful! Also you can dine in, or you can call in an order! I have called in several times, they without fail have my food ready in 10-15 minutes (I am usually ordering for 5-8 people)! My mother grew up in the area, and often visited the Chocolate Moose when she returned for visits. When she passed away, we knew that having a gathering at the CM was exactly what she'd like. We were overwhelmed by their hospitality, and all our guests thoroughly enjoyed their burgers, pork tenderloins, and the variety of fountain drinks. This is the kind of place that is becoming rare, and it's a treasure. Their ingredients and care in preparation make for a happy tummy. First off, this is the best Hoosier Pork tenderloin in East Central Indiana. It isn't quite traditional (it's cooked on a grill top, not deep fried), but it is juicy on the inside and crispy on the outside and nicely seasoned. They also have really good burgers--they must use high quality meat. If only they made their own ice cream/desserts and their own onion rings and fried green beans/mushrooms/etc., they would be five stars in my book. Nevertheless, check this place out. The Chocolate Moose is a burger, fries, and i cream joint with Ellis/coca cola memrobilia. But it's far more - everyone has their families & children here getting a Sundae or Strawberry Shortcake or a milkshake. The menu has much more to offer than just burgers - fish, salads, tenderloin, chicken and they have homemade chips too. The service is fast & friendly. The restaurant is clean and nostalgic. We drove from Richmond, Indiana for lunch. We had heard good things. I don't know if they were just having a bad day or what, but we won't go again. Our server was a nice young girl. I watched the young man that cooked our food and was totally disgusted. He wore no gloves as he put the hamburger on. Took raw bacon with his bare hands and put on the grill. He did not wash his hands. Instead, he wiped them on his shirt. He then put our baskets out for our food with these same hands. He then handled our buns. By the time that our food came, I was turned off. My bun was so stale that it fell apart in my hands. I did eat the French fries. My husbands chocolate shake was awesome.
