Food was alright in taste. It tasted very bland and all the curries tasted the same. The owner stopped by half way through the meal to check on me, and I had to ask why is there no naan on the buffet. Then I was offered the naan. That too was bland. The staff seemed more interested in catering to the american clientele 'only' if you know what I mean. The eggplant fritter thing was also difficult to chew. The eggplant was undercooked. I've eaten Clay Pit food twice. THe first time was the buffet on a Sunday after church. The selections were limited, and they needed to replenish the steam trays often. It was typical Indian food...mutter paneer, chicken tikka masala, tandoori chicken, garlic naan, lentils, etc. Not great, but not horrible. Pretty average all in all. The second time they catered a wedding and the food was much better. It was pretty much the same stuff only fresher, hotter and more abundant. The Indians I know in the area seem to prefer Clay Pit over Tandoor. Need to try the other place and decide for myself. read more

Upside of claypit MTSU students can get a buffet for $8 ( u need to show ur id). The MTSU buffet can have only 4 sides and you can refill only once. The downside pretty much same food everyday in the menu. Normal buffet is also not good compared with Tandoor if u compare the price. Menu is same, food is not good. Their amriti (desser, looks a orange circle) is horrible, mango custard is okay and gulab jamun is horrible. The yellow rice does not taste good and the chicken curry is same everyday. Don't judge this restaurant by it's appearance! The best Indian food I've ever had. And the service is too good. The owner tries to get you the food to your expectations. We had dinner tonight on the way to Nashville while coming from Smokies. We ordered chhole peshawari and dal makhani (both spicy) and it was very yummy. I would definitely recommend this restaurant. not my favorite indian food i've ever eaten, but it hits the spot. we have only gotten the buffet because there are several options to try. the saag (spinach) is my least favorite that i've had but the other vegetarian selections are really good. the garlic naan is delicious and always fresh. they are generally playing a humorous indian program on the tv. friendly staff. read more

Decided to give this place another try; buffet late afternoon. The samosas were OLD and dried out. The food was over salted and had grease floating on top. The selection of dishes was very limited and nothing tasted very fresh.The only thing that saved this from being a total wash was the fabulous garlic naan, served fresh to the table. Their buffet is always fresh and they even catered my wedding in smithville (this is the second place my husband took me to eat, he loves it here been going for over a decade). This was our first time ever trying Indian food. I really liked the chicken Tikka masala from the buffet. There wasn't much selection on the buffet but what was on there seemed fresh and was hot. My husband got the sheek kabob and it was really good also. Our kids split a chicken dish with a creamy sauce (forgot the name) and one of them liked it the other didn't. It definitely isn't a place for picky children as there aren't any options geared towards them. The staff was very helpful explaining things and very friendly. I visited Clay Pit for the first time tonight. The food and service is excellent. The buffet has a great variety of dishes. In particular the rice, lamb Curry, and garlic naan was my favorite.
