Quality of the work is excellent. I always take my clothes here for alterations and dry cleaning.

This place gone downhill since the new owner(husband and wife)take over. They are so rude I would not go back there again.

TL;DR: bad store for alterations. Owner is dismissive/rude and will argue with you about what you want. I had my wedding dress altered here in 2018 and they did a good job for a good price, but I'm seeing here that it's under new ownership / management---I guess that explains it. I came here in February 2020 wanting to have a jiu-jitsu gi taken in on the sides and she argued with me that I didn't need to have it taken in because I wear a belt for jiu-jitsu. Come again, you understand jiu-jitsu better than I do?? Because that gi was a tent on me. I went home in frustration and just took in the sides myself. I came in today with a dress wanting to have it hemmed 2 inches and have pockets added to it. She said she wasn't going to do the pockets because she doesn't "want to" and it "takes too long" (I was in no hurry to have the dress back). I asked her if she could refer me to someone who could do it and she said "I have no idea, I just don't want to do it." We went to the register and she said it would be $40 for the hem. Come again?? This was not a wedding dress, it was a simple, cotton jersey maxi dress, and hemming is one of the simplest sewing operations. I said never mind, that's too much, and she was like, "Well I would have charged you $25 per pocket, would you have been fine with that?" Um, what?? How do you know how much you charge for pockets when you don't offer that service?? But, for the record, I'd have been fine being charged $25/pocket. I'm an amateur seamstress myself, I've hemmed and put pockets on plenty of dresses and pants, a pocket is a more complicated operation than a hem. $25 per pocket is fine; $40 for a simple hem is ridiculous. I took the dress home and have already hemmed it myself and ordered material to do the pockets myself. Guess I'll have to look elsewhere for alterations, which is too bad, I'm a Des Plaines resident and I genuinely try to support Des Plaines businesses. read more

I really try to support local businesses. It's so funny bc customer service should be their ultimate advantage in the fight with the large retails. However, I've been to this place several times, and their attitude is so on the edge I'm always afraid I'll say something that will piss them off. It's obvious that they're really busy, so I guess that's where the arrogance comes from. I agree with the reviews posted. The owner (the lady) was very rude consistently when I went there a couple of times. Price was unbelievably expensive. I respect local business and support them but this place is not one of them. I am not sure why the owner would not 'try' accommodating customers' requests. I do not recommend this place. read more

I wouldn't even give this place 1 star but since that isn't an option let me explain why this business isn't worth your hard earned money. The business has been in Des Plaines for decades and was sold to new management 3 years ago. I have been a customer of the previous owners for years since it is right by my house. I've been a customer of the new owners for the past few years and they are extremely unprofessional in every sense of the word. I've had clothes laundered, dry cleaned and tailored there because of convenience but they don't appreciate your business. I walked in today to have a few items of clothing altered. I had to wait 25 minutes because the customer before me was arguing with the owner about her alterations. The customer wanted to hem her skirt and use the leftover material for a sash but the owner told her it wouldn't look nice so she refused to make it. How can you tell the customer what will or won't look nice? It's her clothes and none of your business what style she likes, she didn't come for your opinion just for the alteration. While this customer was in the dressing room getting ready the owner asked me what I needed. When I told her I needed to alter a few pieces for a trip I'm taking she told me she was busy and wouldn't be able to have it ready for 2-3 weeks. I told her that was ok because I needed it in early August. After the first customer left I went into the dressing room and tried on an outfit to alter. When I stepped out the owner made a few suggestions about the items I wanted to alter and then said it was going to cost a lot of money because it would be a lot of work. I told her that was ok and then she told me, "you know what I don't want to do it". I didn't understand what she meant by that so I asked her to explain and she went off on me. She started mumbling in another language and then politely told me to leave. I was astonished at her behavior. When I asked her why she was refusing to service me she just went on and on about how busy she is and doesn't have time to tailor my clothes but she told me 2-3 weeks and I never gave her a problem with this date. I asked to speak to the other owner but he didn't offer any assistance. She told me to take it elsewhere but I couldn't understand why she would refuse to take my business after all the business I've given them. They do not appreciate their customers nor do they show them any courtesy. I spent my entire break from work going there and waiting to be helped and was asked to leave after 45 minutes wasted. I will never go back to this business again or recommend them to anyone who values their time and money. Very disappointed. read more

How rude...can you believe the owner had the nerve to call me and he screamed at me for posting a negative review about his cleaners, he yelled so rudely at me and then he stated, "Since you posted a negative post of my cleaners and my staff, "We are not going to repair your dress!" My hubby picked up my evening dress the very next day. He said he wasn't there at that time and I said he was probably hiding in the back of the store. My dress was partially repaired. I was never refunded not a cent for the botched job alteration that I paid for. The Asian seamstress was the (only person) in the store who seem concerned and was very apologetic. I don't blame her at all. I feel that she is not an experienced seamstress. The Owner probably will only hire and pay for cheap labor and refuses to pay a decent salary to his employees. "You pay for what you get". His behavoir is totally unacceptable. Inside the cleaners there is a sign on the wall requesting for customers to please Post your review on Yelp of your experience at The Cleanery and that's simply what I did, where is the problem? How can an Owner treat his customers this way and why should I just let him get away with it - without warning prospective customers? This place is horrible! They will NEVER EVER get any more business from me again, my family or my friends and if he has the balls to ever call me again, I will add "Harrassment" to my current Case that I have already filed against cleaners. I continue to ask myself, "Are they really worth my precious time in court for a lousy, petty $85." They must be starving for business or just plain dirty greedy. Very rude owner and costs $12 to dry clean a work jacket when I can go down the street for under $5. Winter sweaters are about half the price at CD Cleaners down the street and they have better customer service and better hours. Avoid this rude outdated place. read more

Great personal service, always on time, and super friendly people who really know their business. If you're looking for a dry cleaner who cares about their customers, this is the place. I've been using them for many years for everything from everyday clothes, to leather coats, to formal wear, and always trust them to do an excellent job. Went there cause I needed one my clothes fixed up before a important weekend. When I went to pick it up they had done nothing with my clothes. Luckily management saw nothing was done and gave my money back, but what's the point of having a tailoring service if you're not going to do any work... Would not recommend. Not reliable read more

I've only used them a couple times and both times we had problems. First time was with a work coat. We got the coat back but w/ o the liner. When we finally got the liner back it wasn't cleaned. We had similar problem with my wife's leather coat. It was a very expensive cleaning and was returned w/o detachable hood. I've been using this cleaners for a while, usually i've been satisfied most of the time, but what bothers me was the fact that I would always had to check my shirts because many times they would have wrinkles- when i point it out they would take the shirt and iron it no problem but why they don't check in the first place before wrapping it- no idea. Also, I took my husbands white cufflink shirt to them that had some stains around cuffs, I pointed it out and asked if they would be able to clean it they said yes,, when i came to pick it up the shirt was wrapped nicely but learning my lesson from previous times I went to check on it and there they where the same stains- no note "sorry we couldn't do it" nothing... with a hesitation they took my shirt to do the do over, I came to pick it up and again the same story. They will not give me my money back for not doing their job. I think thats at least they could do. In fact I know this shirt can be cleaned because I've used very experienced cleaner other times but unfortunately he's too far from my place but I guess I have no choice now. It"s also very funny how they say that they provide service for "famous people" well I guess they must treat their regular customers differently then. I'm done giving a try. read more

Have been coming here for over 8 years, the staff is great and very friendly. I recently moved out of the area and had a few unsuccessful attempts at finding another dry cleaner (think ruined shirts). I know travel 15 mins out of my way to come back. The service is great! read more

I have been going to The Cleaners for more than 20 years because the service was outstanding and personal--key word "was." I would drive more than 15 miles because it was worth it and I was supporting a small business. However, last year they changed owners and the woman is incredibly rude and the prices have gone sky-high. I used to be able to bring my blouses in to be laundered and was charged the same as mens' shirts. Now they are charging me the same fee as dry cleaning the shirts because they are smaller than mens' shirts? So--the price more than doubled. When I tried to ask why the prices are so high, the owner got very frustrated and basically said so do you want them cleaned or not? No explanation, no offer with a discount. Basically, if I didn't like it I could leave. So after 20 years, I am leaving. Good luck staying in business with that attitude. Using the Cleanery for a year. Clothes returned in excellent condition, repairs far exceed my expectations, ready date of pickup, great staff. Recent coat cleaning and closures replacement best work I received! Leather jacket was touched up and suede patch restored to almost new condition. Well...tried to support the local businesses here in Des Plaines and took it on the chin on this one, again. First, two years ago, I had a simple dry cleaning order. After they blamed the outsourcing business for losing it, they tried on two different occasions to stick me with two other similar shirts, saying they must be mine! A bait and switch for sure! I did not accept and then the owner issued me a coupon for future cleaning at the store. Like a fool I took it and never went back to use the coupon. Fast forward two years to July 1st, 2016. I go and have a simple table cover cleaned and the lady (short with really red lipstick that she wears all the time), says it should be cleaned and not dry cleaned. Whatever at this point but I asked for a quote and she said "not much." Not much turned into $55 for something I could have and should have done at home. I questioned her about this overcharge and if the owner was available. She said the owner was not available as he was out for an operation and because I was asking so many questions and subsequently, being rude by doing so, that she would not accept my debit card and I would have to pay in cash. The customers behind me had a stunned look and one of them turned around with their cleaning order. At least that is some payback for attitudinal, unprofessional, deceitful business practices that are a hallmark of The Cleanery Cleaners in Des Plaines. The red lipstick lady and the owner should be embarrassed by how they treat their longstanding customers and in this case, never again customer. STAY AWAY! read more

I brought a shirt to be cleaned and starched on a Wednesday, and was promised by the lady at the place if it would be ready by Friday. (I needed it for a wedding that Friday.) On Friday, when I went to pick it up, the same lady told me it had not come in. No apology, no explanation, nothing. I asked to speak to the manager, but he was not there -I was told.I went the following Tuesday to pick it up again, and I got my shirt. Same lady working-no apologies or anything. As another reviewer said, they have a sign asking customers to review them on yelp. But if your service stinks why put a sign like that up. I went there becasue I want to support local businesses, but I will never go there again. You have been warned! read more

I have been using The Cleanery for over 30 years and wouldn't trust my clothes to anyone else. When I get a spill or stain on something I totally leave it alone knowing that when I bring it to them it will be taken care of and removed. They have never failed me! I tried those cheap cleaners like CD and my clothes feel like they were tumbled in a dryer when they are supposed to be dry cleaned and pressed. My clothes always come out crisp and pleated and professional looking. They warn you in advance if there is any risk to cleaning if it involves rhinestones or something dimensional on the material. I have always said go for it and I have never been disappointed. They will even send it for hand washing if they aren't sure about sending it through dry cleaning. They are open at 6:00 in the morning during the week and that's another plus as it is so convenient to drop off and pick up on the way to work. Many places don't open that early. I used to live in Des Plaines and even after I moved I have stayed with them and just take a different route to work on the days I need to drop off or pick up my dry cleaning. When you walk in there is a sign saying to leave a review on here, why I don't know. Why would they want BAD reviews because that is all they will get. I called on a Saturday afternoon to see if I dropped off my clothes if I could have them back Monday. Women on the phone said definitely by Monday after lunch, bring them in. So I go there and another women said, "No way". I explained I called and was told to mention the call and that it wouldn't be a problem to get them back Monday afternoon. The women at the counter said she will clean them, but not by Monday. Didn't care, nothing, no explanation. She could care less and I believe she was the women on the phone. So much for calling....this place is rude and has zero customer service. read more
