This has always been one of my favorite places to go -- the food, the people, and the ambience were all exceptional. Right in the heart of Newcastle, it felt like a true neighborhood gem. The owner, Jen, is an absolute dream, and her staff reflected that same warmth and care. Every visit felt welcoming, thoughtful, and special. This place will be greatly missed, and I'm so grateful for the many wonderful meals I had here over the years. The burrata was always outstanding, no matter the season or preparation -- somehow familiar yet always fresh and creative. From comforting pot pies and rich lasagnas to classic meat-and-potato dishes and beautifully executed cuisine, everything that came out of the kitchen was mouthwatering and made with intention. While it's hard to say goodbye, I'm thankful that Jen still has Brimmer & Heeltap in Seattle, where her talent and vision continue to shine. We stopped by the Coleman for happy hour tonight and enjoyed a wonderful experience and food. We ordered the deviled eggs and chickpea fritters, which were served with tarragon aioli and chutney. Both appys were delicious and presented beautifully. Service was also amazing. I've also eaten there a few times for breakfast and was equally impressed. Stopped here for happy hour on a Friday afternoon. Not too busy and we snagged seats at the bar. The space is classy and airy and service was very attentive and friendly. We were offered a choice of still or sparkling water, which was a nice touch. For happy hour, four of the regular appetizers were offered at shelf price, as were wines by the glass. We shared the chickpea fritters, which were served with an aoli and chutney. The fritters, shaped as sticks, were just at the edge of crispy and the dips were flavorful and complementary. I popped into The Coalman in Newcastle on a weeknight and immediately liked the small, cozy setup--half café, half bar. It's the kind of spot where you can grab a legit coffee by day and switch to cocktails, wine, or a mocktail at night. The menu runs light bites, salads, and sandwiches--simple, not fussy. Service was the highlight. The team was friendly and proactive with suggestions, and the owner was behind the bar the night I visited--she mixed a balanced, tasty drink that hit the spot. I didn't eat this time (wasn't in the mood), but I watched plenty of happy tables working through their food, which looked dialed-in for a casual hang. Amazing time!!! Food. Service, and Ambiance was all amazing! We walked in and was immediately greeted. Sidenote: we had a reservation, the place is small so I would recommend making a reservation to ensure you have a table when you arrive. Then, we were invited to a complimentary wine tasting and a great description of the wine's region. Bonus!! The wine was good, too. We because a couple of bottles and signed up to receive more information about their wine club. They will start in the new year. Ambiance was so warm and pleasant. TL;DR: Update to give credit where it's due. The Coalman has reinvested in its dinner menu with novel farm-to-table dishes like seared ahi, braised lamb, and couscous with clams. The vibe and service is still solid. The prices make this a "$$$" night out but the menu is now worthy of the prices. I was frankly bummed out when they stopped the brunch service. The brunch food was amazing... mainstays like the fried egg breakfast sandwich made us frequently diners. Compared to the old dinner menu, brunch was hands down the better menu. The old dinner menu had weird flavors and limited "main dishes" and they rarely updated the menu. Now, dinner is much better. It took several months since they stopped dinner service, but I think they're finally getting into the groove of it. We recently had their seared ahi and couscous with clams--both were very fresh, novel yet non-offensive flavors, and solid presentation. We also had the carrot cake which was quite good with the crispy carrots and moist cake. What's unique is Coalman is now aligning themselves with the actual provisioners of the ingredients. For example, the seared ahi used ahi from St Jude's Tuna (a local fishing vessel). They also aligned themselves with Bellevue Farmers Market for some other ingredients. If y'all are reading this, I think it's an amazing idea to emphasize the "farm-to-table" menu by highlighting your partnerships with the provisioners/farmers/fishers both on social media and on the menu/in-store. The key is keeping up the quality, diversity, and presentation of the dinner menu... which hopefully you can keep doing. Last thing to mention is the service. Dinner service is solid. The servers are professional yet unpretentious. No more self service water like with brunch--they do a full service. It's also not pretentious or sassy. I think I know what some reviewers had witnessed, but I haven't encountered that experience this most recent visit. I highly recommend giving The Coalman another shot, especially if you have been let down by their dinner service in the past. It's much better, and I now would consider revisiting for dinner in the future (though please still bring back brunch). read more

This place is a lovely brunch place by day, a fun dinner spot at night. We've come for both their daytime and nighttime menu and they're both really good! For dinner we got an heirloom tomato toast, chicken pot pie, and braised beef shoulder per our server's recommendation. We also ordered two custom mocktails which were made to order based on our preferences. The food was all pretty good, although the pot pie was a bit underseasoned for our taste. Brunch is also pretty good all around. My only slight complaint is that their coffee drinks are a bit small for the price. The server we had was so nice and friendly! It was a little busy and we were unsure what the wait would be, she made a trip around the place to check on the time and tables to get a rough idea for us. The small eats were good! Plated nicely and tasted nice! The drinks we got were great too! I prefer something sweet so I asked for mine to be a little sweeter and they helped to make it that. My favorite was the bruschetta as it was savory but also sweet with the pomegranate seeds. The chicken pot pie was also great too (yes it took a little to come out but it was worth it.) I heard that this place was closed, so next time was in the area, I drove by. I saw that it was indeed closed, with prominent signs in the window showing contact information for the property management company, strongly implying that the place was available for lease. I say good riddance. Clearly lots of people liked it, but it was a poor fit for the neighborhood. Some of the food was very good sometimes. But it was uneven. Some people reported great service, but many others reported very poor service. Some of the pictures showed very beautifully presented dishes. And all of it was very expensive. So, sometimes excellent but uneven food quality, sometimes excellent but uneven service quality, and all of it top dollar? This is a place that belonged in downtown Seattle. Downtown Bellevue would have worked too, especially the little strip of old downtown Bellevue on Main street. It would have fit right in there, probably doing gangbuster business right now. But Newcastle?? C'mon. This is deep suburbia. We like good food and good service, but we're generally less patient with uneven quality than downtown hipsters. And we like a good value. After all, a common reason given for high prices in downtown restaurants in Seattle or Bellevue is the expensive rent. But The Coalman's Newcastle rent should have been less. If it wasn't, then choosing that location over downtown was all the more strange. The Coalman was at best an awkward fit for this neighborhood. Here's hoping the next tenant is a better fit. The Coalman's name derived from the old Newcastle coal mine. Given the restaurant's farm-to-table emphasis, why not call a downtown Bellevue version "The Strawberry Field", since Bellevue used to be mostly strawberry farms before WWII? read more

What a cute spot! I worked here over lunch and absolutely loved the vibes. It has a really cool, modern feel, and was lively enough to be fun but chill enough to be a good spot to work. Our server was very helpful and kind. I am gluten free and they don't offer many gluten free options, but she asked the chef to make the nicoise sandwich as a salad and they were happy to do it. Love the addition of Coalman to the Newcastle neighborhood. Very modern feel and love the concept of coffee bar, wine bar, and brunch. The menu is fairly limited (hopefully more items will be added in the upcoming months). We tried the fried sandwich, BL Tartine, and a blueberry muffin. I would have to say the BL Tartine was my favorite - loaded with flavors (bacon, tomato, and a garlic aioli sauce on a rustic slice of bread). Staff was friendly. Wow! What a great addition to the growing food options in Newcastle. The Coalman is brought to us by the owner of Seattle favorite, Brimmer and Heeltap, and the offerings here are just as delicious. I split the spring salad and meatball sandwich and both were so tasty. The salad had just the right vinaigrette and the flavors went together. The meatballs were flavorful and perfectly seasoned. The sandwich doesn't come with any side offering . Service is so so friendly and the space has a clean and modern design. I'll start this with not looking into what The Coalman was, it is an amazing place for breakfast or lunch. Hubby and I went for a morning walk here and it was great. Fresh, hot and the taste was amazing. When I received my coffee, I was under the impression that it was something else, but it was strong and they fixed the drink how I wanted it. Got the snickerdoodle cookie (told it was baked fresh that morning), it had a crispy edge and soft interior, almost doughy. Flavor wise, little on the sweeter side. When you walk up to The Coalman, the lush green setting outside is super inviting. You walk in and the ambiance is sophisticated but welcoming. There is ample space in the area and dining options inside and outside. This place is a Cafe Coffee and Bar with a farm to table experience. Their temporary hours are Wednesday- Sunday 7am to 2pm. The coffee was smooth and delicious. When I ordered my Cafe Latte they let me know they serve it more on the wet side and asked if I was okay with that and if not, they would adjust it to my preference. We ordered the stuffed eggs which came with three but they had an option to add on one extra since we were sharing to make it even for us. These were okay. Really loved the radicchio salad underneath. The highlight for me was the Spring salad. It has the perfect amount of dressing and was herbaceous and bright. The nuts added were a harmonious component to the dish. The saltiness from the pecorino cheese combined everything all together. The Fried egg sandwich was perfect. The bacon was crisp, the egg was cooked medium so still jammy but not runny. And I loved this because it made for a delicious but not messy experience. The bread was toasted and slightly crispy but not crumbly. The onion and Dijon mustard really added a nice zing to the sandwich and I absolutely loved that. Order at the counter and they give you a card to take to your table if you're dining in. If you order coffee to go, they call your name. There is an area for condiments for your coffee, a filtered water station with pitchers and glasses. You will also find silverware and plates here if you're dining in. I do want to note we loved their filtered water. It was crisp and delicious. My regular water drinkers will know what I'm talking about. You also do buss your tables when done. Overall we really enjoyed this place. Looking forward to when they are open for evening dinner so we can come back and enjoy some wine or drinks as well. read more

3.5 stars. Really missed the large Starbucks that used to be here and was happy to see a new option in Newcastle to visit while in the area. Came right at 8am opening to meet a friend for coffee/breakfast. Decor is modern and cute. Server was not super engaging with me at the counter but seemed to be with regulars. I am a meat lover, but this root hash (even without the order of bacon) is OUT OF THE WORLD. The perfectly fried eggs, the hearty and well seasoned vegetables, and the magical hint of acidity -- oh man I love everything on this plate. Please please please make this a permanent item. This place is very unassuming from the outside. We've driven past here multiple timesz and finally decided to stop in. There's a sign as you enter instructing you to order before sitting, which no one cares to follow (3 people in front of us claimed seats first), and seating only felt limited because people stayed after eating. It was obvious that the cooks put some time and attention into the dishes. There's usually one or two things about breakfast I feel disappointed by at other places but not here! Here for an evening group event in mid-January. We were late arrivals for a large party of maybe 20 people, but they were able to make room for us at the end of the table (yay!). Service was very prompt and very attentive, and the table was nice. Restaurant was attractive (it has very slight Starbucks vibes, but only if you look for them.) We had a glass of wine and the Bob's Point of Vieux cocktail. The small cocktail was quite tasty and my dining partner enjoyed it. The wine was reasonable - I was more into expediency rather than detailed perusal of the wine list and a chat with the waitstaff about the wines! But the list looked interesting. I have a small quibble that our $28 of drinks ended up being $38.54 out the door (5% restaurant fee, 20% large party, and then tax, too.) I suppose they are legitimate fees but I wasn't quite feeling the value of the whole thing? I guess it's easier when we tip generously (which we always do) rather than have it decided for us by fees. I'd recommend it for a grown-up night out - neither overly fancy, nor casual - in short, the perfect parameters for a pleasant wine bar. read more

New-ish spot in Newcastle in an interesting area. It's tucked away into the Safeway parking lot and next door to DIY Tea Lab, so it could be kind of easy to miss if you didn't know it was here! The Coalman is a great little cafe with limited brunch & evening food options. I tried their Coalman breakfast, which was potatoes, bacon, eggs, and toast. The potatoes were the star of the show for me - super crispy and had good flavor. They are also a wine bar (maybe cocktails, too?) so I grabbed a mimosa. It was good, but you can't really mess a mimosa up, can you? ;) All in all a cute little spot to work remotely and I would come back to try more of the menu as the evening options sound really good. read more

Their food is pretty tasty - we had toast (it was good, but expensive for what it is), coffee is pretty good, but have to ask for it to be extra hot, the gnocchi dish was good = a bit bland, but for a kid it was a good lunch item. Had muffins here and the tarts - also good (again expensive) - Cannot walk away without paying over $50. On service - a bit of a hit&miss - sometimes it's intimidating to come up to the counter. Tatted up folks engaged in a convo - you feel like an intrusion... But there's one gal there who makes coffee (*probably other things too) who was kind to remember my little one's "coffee drink - steamed milk w/ chocolate drizzle"... that I appreciated - a lot of folks pass through that spot and she remembered us from weeks ago. From the moment I walked in, I felt that it was a very nicely appointed, clean and Friendly place, as I was greeted immediately. The selection of breakfast goodies, and coffee choices were really good. I've got to say the peanut butter cookie was the best I've ever had. The Americano I got, was excellent as well. Great addition to dining choices in Newcastle, and adds a little Malibu-like flair to the local scene. This former Starbucks location is now a nice bistro offering breakfast and dinner choices, including hot morning beverages and alcohol options. Their breakfast sandwich and French toast were delicious. They also sell a great selection of wine, selected by the (former?) Canlis wine buyer. Staff was cheerful and friendly with excellent service. Order at the counter and they will bring out your order when it's ready. The interior is clean and fresh with a modern farmhouse vibe and the outside has tables and chairs with plants and fencing to reduce the noise of Coal Creek Parkway nearby. read more

Came here expecting a casual breakfast and was pleasantly surprised by how nice it was. Don't be fooled by the name. It's a casual and modern cafe/bistro. The interior decor is light and elegant and has a decent amount of seating inside. There are also a couple of cute tables outside. You order from the front then they bring your food. There's also a sizable section of good wine to choose from. We ordered the stuffed eggs, egg sandwich, and the French toast. The stuffed eggs were good, and we loved the salad that it came with. The green goddess dressing was tangy and went perfectly with the dish. The French toast definitely was not traditional but the bread, jam and butter were delicious. If you're a traditional French toast person, I don't know if I'd recommend this, but we enjoyed it. The highlight of our meal was the egg sandwich. The bread was the perfect softness and texture, the egg was perfectly cooked and the quality of the bacon was very good. It also had a sauce on it which I found out was just mustard, but everything worked together so well and it was my favorite breakfast sandwich I've ever had. I will definitely come back for that. Even though it's counter service, everyone who worked there was extremely pleasant and nice. When I asked for some salt, they brought out a ramekin of some fancy salt that they get from Pike Place! I spoke with the general manager who told me that the owner grew up and lives locally in Newcastle, and she told me that they're going to be opening for dinner very soon. I think this place is going to be a hotspot in Newcastle and I'm so glad that we have another great place to visit nearby. read more

On a day that had been uneventful but unusual, in that I was on the Eastside for a meeting with a new client, things swerved into unexpected brilliance when I made a wrong turn by accident and decided to stop and get a coffee so I could use a bathroom. As one does. As soon as walked in it was apparent something was different, none of that suburban let's play restaurant vibe, actual food, well curated wines for sale, serious espresso machine, knowledgeable friendly staff. What the hell. There was a meeting happening at one of the tables, the chef was walking a series of great looking plates out to two women, they were dissecting them and tasting carefully and taking notes. I'm a busy body so I asked what was going on, they were the owners working on an upcoming seasonal menu change. I wanted that food and I wanted it now. Hard no on that, but I did sit, and I did order what was currently on the menu. One thing, then another, and another. I was out of control, and stunned, this food was incredible. Granted, I'm a city snob, and even worse food snob. This was blowing my mind. I rolled out to my car and swore I'd be back for a dinner service. Two weeks later I'm back, I've dragged my wife along. No joke, we ordered everything on the menu. Not an impossible feat as the menu is tight, yet diverse, each dish beautifully thought through and executed flawlessly. I've lived in San Francisco and New York City where the bar is high for restaurants (and of course Seattle where it isn't always) and The Coalman would be competitive in both cities, so to find it in Newcastle ... WTF! I hope the locals find, appreciate and patronize this place. It is special, and if you live in Seattle or Bellevue, it's worth a trip. Restaurants are hard, these folks really care and it shows. Update: I wrote this some ago, I may or may not have been in Yelp prison, but I want add that in the time between then and now the dinner menu is now larger and eating the whole thing with two people would be a weird thing to try and do. read more
