We were really excited to see the Coalman open last year, but didn't get a chance to start going until January. After going a few times, I feel pretty confident in a 3-star rating. The good: pretty ambiance, great coffee and cocktail menu. The location is awesome - we've sorely needed more options out in Newcastle! The bad: Limited menu, inconsistency with pricing (some items that seem to be more costly are less expensive than basic things that are $$), food just doesn't feel aligned with overall cost. It's okay food for great food prices. The ugly: The added 5% cost for all menu items - just raise the dang prices. I think it would be easier for people to stomach a slightly more expensive dish, the surcharge feels like an insult! I've seen so many people complain about this to the poor servers that they've had to start printing up a card with more info/an explanation on it. Overall, solid little bar/cafe situation but I would like to see some changes before we make it our neighborhood haunt. read more

Restaurant or cafe is okay nothing out of the ordinary.. what gets me is sooooo overpriced and their service is minimal..you order at the bar and pay there, you get 20% gratuity added for what for someone running your food? you want another drink go and get it.. so stupid, they are trying to be "higher' class bar.. well have full service where you have actual servers taht deserve that 20% tip needless to say.. not going back. We sat at the bar ands were greeted by Jen the owner, she asked our names and shook our hands. I love that, already we felt welcome. We were soon immersed in the free wine tasting outside, love my Italian wines. After buying a bottle we sat back down at the bar and I enjoyed it while my husband enjoyed his old fashion. Adorable new cafe in Newcastle with elegant interior and cute seating area outside the cafe. I tried the Breakfast Sandwich, BL Tartine and the Stuffed eggs. All dishes were flavorful and I especially liked the dressing on the stuffed eggs. The con is that some menu items are difficult to eat and on the pricey side. The eggs in the breakfast sandwich are soft so they run all over your hands. The BL Tarine had a good mix of flavors, but was packed so high, we had to deconstruct it to eat it. I would come back for coffee but probably not food. Both my latte and my iced london fog were perfect. read more

Its small and comfortable and friendly staff there to welcome you. The food is fresh and creative. They make their own pastries daily , the bread is from Grand Central, the coffee is cafe Umbria. - its quality all the way around. The woman who owns it has other restaurants in Ballard. She also grew up in Newport Hills and the name The Coalman is after the coal mining industry that is part of the history of the area. I wish them much success. read more

I'm one of the greatest fan of this place, however the last two times I have been there the service is pretty terrible. It seems at time they get overwhelmed, and cannot cope. The breakfast sandwich was delicious (the Dijon such an unexpectedly yummy touch) and hubby had the French toast which was made with sturdy fresh bread. The portions are small, there is no "sides" for example when you order and the food is OK but not something that will draw u back. Also the options are super limited. A great addition to Newcastle! Don't let the outside fool you... the inside is beautifully designed with great cafe, cocktail, and wine choices. A few table options and bar counter top seating options. I believe they also had some tables outside. I ordered an iced vanilla latte and fried egg sandwich to go. Both were delicious! The sandwich was made with thick cut bacon and the sauce was very flavorful. I definitely plan to be back to dine in. read more

It is great to have a foodie café in the neighborhood. We really need more hyper-local places to interest folks with fairly high disposable income. The menu is fairly unstructured, pretty minimal with some unusual dishes. There are no 'meals' just entrees, sides and appetizers. This was not explained as I was asking questions and ordering. I chose the Seared Scallops which included corn, pickled okra, and cucumber borani (I actually know the cuisines that offer borani which can resemble a soup, sometimes puréed). In my wildest dreams, I didn't think id be transported to the 90s New York gourmand scene; tiny portions on mini plates. I'm not a very big person and don't have a huge appetite, but I knew I wouldn't be satisfied by 3 scallops sitting in about 3 tablespoons of corn & okra sauce; not really worth $28 for such a tiny entree. It was perfectly prepared and delicious! So I ordered some bread (which took awhile, as my scallops grew cold). The bread was a rye, served with French butter (rather over-salted). I ordered a cocktail after a fair amount of discussion; From Ballard with Love is a basically a gin martini with aquavite and aromatics. Although delicious, I didn't know that's what I was getting, as it wasn't explained that way. The decor is modern with lots of wood, iron and tile--very nice, even sophisticated. Their playlist seems mostly indie rock and singer-songwriter, pleasant; it could have been a tiny bit softer which would then not require louder voices to talk over it. That keeps this place from being intimate. The service was good; attentive and polite, waitstaff does need to be more descriptive with the nature of the menu and the cocktails. We shouldn't have to quiz at the third-degree to get enough information (on an unusual menu) to order to our satisfaction. (Just overheard the couple next to me mentioning how the menu isn't very descriptive...) Why am I giving only 3 stars for a place with all these fine qualities? Because they really have to figure some things out. At this price point, they're competing for our dollars with some damn fine restaurants in Seattle and across the Eastside and cus to omer confusion will not cut it. I really want them to make it; I hope they reach out on pm for more feedback. Restaurants run in the family. read more

More of a bar and high end (small menu) restaurant than a cafe, came in expecting the usual cafe fare, did not find that, but I was not disappointed with the ambience and service, nor the drinks. Sparkling water is served free if you want it instead of normal water, which is kind of them. They have a small variety of interesting cafe drinks syrups, and a large variety of wine. I wasn't there for any alcohol, but just a cursory glance gives me an idea that this place has a solid stock. The menu is small, featuring happy hour/evening foods and an early day menu with brunch/lunch type foods. I came during happy hour, which is when they only have the top half of the menu. I ordered bread and prosciutto, which was fantastic and served with a really nice honey! Overall, I recommend this place, though more so for brunch of dates and less for general cafe business. read more

I have been waiting and stalking this place ever since I saw their sign. They took over the Starbucks location. The place is spacious and cute and clean. Plenty of parking spots so that's always a plus in my book. People/service were nice and friendly, very welcoming. They recently opened and only open from 7-2. We came like 10mins before closing and they still welcomed us. We ordered the spring salad and the meatball sandwich. Both were delicious. There was no sides for the sandwich (wish there was) so the price was a little pricey, to me . ($16 for 3 meatballs sandwich). Would totally go back so I can try other items.. yum! read more

Food is above average (overpriced) but service is VERY unprofessional. The servers constantly nag you, almost like nudging you to leave ASAP. There were many other tables vacant so it's very annoying that they would rush customers out. I was able to see them talking among themselves and pointing at my table. (Wow) My group wasn't sitting around over a cup of coffee either. We spent more than $90 on several dishes off the brunch menu. I visited three times so far and I had a similar experience during the first two with the last, most recent one being the worst and most obvious. I get that this place is new but definitely need to train people on the basics of service etiquette. After this kind of treatment, they automatically prompt you to a tip starting at 20%.
