This place is so interesting. It has good food and is very popular. Mainly it is a tourist attraction for all people who like our Texas president who lives nearby. The owners were good friends and so there are lots of photos, T-shirts and coffee mugs from the Bush era in this "Western Whitehouse". Lived in McGregor almost a year now and I tired The Coffee Shop Cafe for the first time. It was delicious. Wish I had gone there sooner!! Ordered for takeout. The employees were so nice. The Coffee Shop Cafe is probably the best place to go to get a good breakfast, lunch or dinner. Service is always good and the staff are efficient and friendly. Never had to complain about bad food, always get plenty to eat and drink. Family and friends enjoy going there to gather and eat. One buffet to rule them all: Coffee Shop Cafe. CSC is absolutely the most awesome country buffet ever. It is $7 for a choice of one meat and unlimited veggies, AND they have 12 vegetables plus a salad bar on the buffet line. Even better, dessert is included. I got the chicken and dumplings, and it was pretty freaking awesome. The stock was rich, the dumplings were super tender, and the chicken was really flavorful. It was a near perfect bowl of C 'n D, but it was a tad on the salty/condensed side. The sides were all prepared with care. I normally judge these kinds of eateries really fast because I just assume that their vegetables are straight out of a can. If that is the case here, they fooled me because most offerings had more than 1 component. The butter beans had some chunks of ham, the pinto beans had some greens mixed in, the collards had some onion, the okra had some tomato, and the list goes on. Sure they could have just tossed some leftovers into the canned vegetables, but each thing was tasty enough to pass as grade A home cookin'. Lastly, the bread pudding was pretty awesome. It was all bread and all pudding. Let me explain: when you eat bread pudding, it should maintain its "bread" texture, but have the consistency of a moist and dense pudding once it goes into your mouth. It is hard to describe, but you know when you have good bread pudding. For everything they give you at the CSC, it would easily be acceptable if a few things sucked. Giving this restaurant 4 stars more for the totally unique ambiance than the food. The Coffee Shop Cafe is a 100% George Bush (both Senior and W) themed restaurant. An experience I'm not sure you could get anywhere else in the country. All sorts of George Bush memorabilia (including a life size George W cutout) both decorating the restaurant and for sale at the restaurant. Nothing to get politically worked up about, it's really more of a George Bush shrine than a political statement. The banquet room also seems to double as something of a gathering place for local groups like the Lions Club to meet up. As for the food, it's homestyle Southern buffet food, as well as a pretty extensive menu. If you can think of it (it being something made of meat, probably deep fried, and covered in butter) they probably have it. If you don't care about your health, I totally recommend the chicken fried steak, mashed potatoes, and white gravy. Nothing could be more American. All you can eat at about ~$10 a person. For the health conscious (i.e. anyone who want to make it to 25 without a heart attack), go for the strawberry fields chicken salad. Heaps of grilled chicken, on top of field greens, strawberries, and some kind of unidentifiable nut served with a heavy balsamic vinaigrette. $12 dollars and probably the healthiest / tastiest option in town. Pro Tip: Save room for dessert. No matter what you order a free small bowl of dessert is coming your way at the end of the meal. read more

Pros: On a Long trip, our first time here. I Chose this place from other reviews. A good local decor. Food was good and had a fresh home cooked way about it. Did not remind us of a typical place like a chain. Many local people there. Many were older folks. That said the older folks go where the food is usually good and less expensive. I will agree to that. The Bush memorabilia was not as plentiful as I imagined. I had chocolate cream pie for desert, good. My son had ice cream. Soft serve. That takes down the home style a notch. Our main course was the buffet. I had chicken fried steak, green beans, mashed potatoes and gravy, fried okra and mac n cheese. All good. My wife and son had the baked fish. A little spicy but good. The fresh okra was the best according to my wife. Again, the food was good, our waitress good and friendly. Cons: The place needs a good cleaning on and around the buffet. The rest rooms do not look regularly cleaned even though it has a inspection record on the door, I don't think it means much. They just need to be clean. The staff we encountered was nice but the owner was not really cordial and rushing me instead of say asking me if I wanted something from his souvenir area. Just how are you paying for this. Was his exact words. I also got a $1 off coupon from Yelp as a thanks for the check in there. I mentioned it to him, he was a little set out by it. Now I was there not in the time it was valid for. No problem that he did not give it to me but he did make a comment about not really knowing about it and needed to contact Yelp about it. The way he said it was that he did not approve. Had a wonderful sunday brunch. We went for the lunch buffet with unlimited salad and sides -- fried chicken and chicken fried steak were freshly made, so comforting. Service was excellent and the family style atmosphere just made it such a classic diner experience. Wish I had space for a slice of their homemade pies. Went 20 minutes out of our way to eat here... Soooo glad we did. Decor simple, very country... Political Bush shrine covering most of the walls, chicken wire on the ceiling, wobbly table, line out the door. That being said our food was FABULOUS!! I had chicken fried steak which I usually never order out cuz mine is the bomb... It was great!! My friend had the cafe special breakfast a lil of everything it too was off the charts delicious! Love the Buffalo Chicken sandwich...All businesses have their ups and downs but the Coffee Shop is always consistent. Would recommend it to anyone in the area! Dining room seems a little congested with all the Presidential items and boutique type stuff they sell in there, but other than that the place is always clean. read more

Ick! How can you ruin breakfast food? They did. Waitress was perhaps overworked and here me and my husband come pretty close to the end of her shift. We got there around 1:00pm and they close at 2pm on Sundays. French toast was made on thin sandwich bread (I could of made this at home) some of the bites of it tasted of garlic. The coffee "the only one cup of coffee we were ever given" because as I said above waitress was in my opinion perhaps overworked never came over to us for us to ask for another cup or to check to inquire about our meal. She did however, bring us our check and did not ask how our meal was or even if we wanted dessert I was interested in the pies they claim to be famous for. Not impressed and have told and will continue to tell folks about our horrible experience with the service and food. Ick read more

WE LOVE THE COFFEE SHOP CAFE!!! We live in Dallas, TX and will drive to McGregor, TX to enjoy a REAL down home good cookin'!!! My personal favorites are items off the breakfast menu...pancakes, migas, biscuits and gravy....I could go on and on! I also really enjoy the huge Country Fried Steaks and their burgers too! Don't leave without having a slice of their FAMOUS PIES (look it up, they really are famous and a few recipes can be found in several published magazines and books...and featured on QVC!!!). I have no problems with this place. The food is awesome, the service is courteous, and the atmosphere is great. If you become a regular and choose a specific station everytime, the waitress of that station will learn your preference of meal and drink. The owner himself will make you feel welcomed. What I like the most is that the owner is a Christian and the ambient music is Christian. It makes the visit so much better! You can order platters or a-la carte. They have a breakfast buffet on Saturday mornings, Mexican buffet on Thursday evenings. Check the place out. The place stays busy. We all can not be wrong! read more

Don and Valerie, who own and run The Coffee Shop, are very people-friendly and go out of their way to make everyone feel welcome! The service has always been outstanding! The buffet has a super variety of entrees, always cooked well and seasoned so great! You MUST TRY the Mexican buffet on Thursday nights! And the catfish on Friday nights! Homestyle cooking, can't beat it! We stopped for lunch on Sunday and got the buffet. 1 meat for 8.99, 2 or more meats 11.99. I suggest getting 1 meat plate because there are so many sides and a decent salad bar. Plus, a basket of rolls and cornbread and dessert of the day. And you have to get a slice of homemade pie, which they are known for. We had the chocolate dream pie, yum! They had CFS, fried chicken, fried fish on the buffet. I love the Coffee Shop Cafe!!! I mostly go for breakfast and it's always good. I like to go during the week when they don't have the buffet. It's not as crowded and we sit and enjoy 2-3 cups of coffee before we get our food. Peggy is our waitress and she is so awesome!!!! She always greets us with a smile and coffee, and she knows what we want before we order:). It's just a very relaxing atmosphere and the food and service are GREAT!!! read more

This is our favorite breakfast spot! Everything is so delicious! Freshly baked biscuits gravy grits & cornbread i always order the steak & eggs. It comes with a huge cut & bloody just like i like it. Kids order the pancakes (hotcakes) the size of a Frisbee! They ask for chocolate chip or banana walnut. Yum! Lunch buffet is always full of southern favorites Fried catfish fired chicken meat loaf Homemade mashed potatoes greens & salad bar Desserts? Oh my gosh the Peach Cobbler!!! They used to have really good food, not anymore, got the quesadilla's now you get one, before it was two and everything is cut up real tiny, hardly any filling, you can barely find the eggs. They are real greasy tasting. Like old grease. They've changed their pies, not good at all, & the little piece of cake you get is like a sponge. read more

Took a " trip" to McGreagor for recommended chicken fried steak....Thurs nite crowd seemed to be there mostly for the all you can eat buffet. Our waitress was attentive. We both had the chicken fried steak with green beans...I had mashed potatoes & Hub had fries. For all the raving we heard, the breading was crisp & tasty but really thick. Meat was a little bland & grisly (at least mine). Rolls were really good (homemade) but we had to ask for them. Understand breakfast is extremely busy. So far none has touched the chicken fried steak in Kerrville last year. read more

I have breakfast every Sunday and I like oatmeal and for the last few months they have it watered down like soup. Not at all happy with it.

Visiting from California last month, my family brought me and my cousin from New York here for breakfast and we were blown away! We don't get good homestyle food like this in So. The coffee shop is a staple in McGregor. However, my husband orders from here probably once a week and his order is always off in someway. I realize the restaurant is always busy, and it does make sense that in-house guests would get priority over call-ins, however, if Call in orders are that much of a burden just don't have the call in option. Many times I have gone to pick up the order and it is wrong or it is missing something or it can't even be found. Dining in is usually fine. My husband and I usually do breakfast only and are not disappointed. The morning light stuff has been there for a while and are good at what they do. read more

Awesome home style cooking and nice environment. I had the salad bar and buffet and the food taste great. We were hungry and driving through town when we came upon this place. There were a lot of cars in the parking--usually signaling a good restaurant. We were unfortunately disappointed. We ordered nephew chicken that came with two sides. My daughter wasn't very hungry, so I ordered a baked potato and mashed potatoes as our sides. We didn't want the buffet as it appeared to be there for hours. We were served cornbread muffins which would have tasted good had they not been burnt. While we were waiting for our meal, the waitress went to buffet and spooned mashed potatoes into 2 bowls. These were the mashed potatoes we were served. The mashed potatoes were cold and flavorless. I was afraid to eat them and worried about temperatures of the rest of the buffet since they were cold. The chicken was good, but I didn't have a side to eat it with. I told the waitress about the cold potatoes, and she didn't say anything. The meal came with dessert cake and ice cream. We waited about 15 minutes after finishing our meal for the waitress to come back, but she was busy filling multiple to-go boxes with buffet food. When she finally came around, we asked for the cake to go since we had a train to catch. She said she would have to charge us for the cake since we were taking it. I then asked to be reimbursed. She said she would ask the manager whom I never saw. We had to leave due catching a train so we just put the amount of meal on the table and left. If you see this place while driving through town just pass it by unless you like cold mushy buffet food. read more

I try not to call a business out but this was unacceptable. My dad's uncle drove over 6 hours to visit and we had breakfast at The Coffee Shop in McGregor. There were 12 of us eating and as the last person was finishing their meal, Donald Citrano comes up to our table and asks very loudly how much longer we were going to be. He said he has a table of 16 who has been waiting for 20 minutes and are threatening to leave if they're not seated soon. Mind you, we had taken my dad out of the nursing home to come for breakfast and him and his uncle were having a great time catching up. I told Donald when we were on our way out the door about my dad and his uncle and he gave a half ass apology and said he was about to lose a table. We spent very good money there and left a great tip. They will never get another dime from us. read more
