The suburbs are a rough, unforgiving landscape for coffee shops. At best, you'll have strip-mall stands, parking-lot carts or mini chains that pour a serviceable menu of second-wave offerings and, if you're lucky, won't try to rope you into Sunday services at the church they're fronting for. At worst, you have places dispensing sugar-laden trucker fuel to customers as quickly as possible and doing as little as they can to keep people hanging around or foster community. To look at The Coffee Shop from the spaghetti bowl of streets surrounding it in Raleigh Hills, you'd get the sense that it could be either of the above. It's at the end of a strip mall, it's along busy roads, and it's put enough thought into the branding that something has to be up, right? As it turns out, no. The Coffee Shop may be clinging to the westernmost point of Portland and may serve as its gateway to the suburbs, but understands its role within its community as well as shops in the denser neighborhoods over the bridges and beyond the tunnels. I only started going here roughly two years ago, but it's become a staple for meeting people in the neighborhood and conducting lengthier conversations. The Coffee Shop is an expansive space that has a modest dining area near its front counter, but effectively a community living room in the back and a sidewalk terrace out front that's workable for about four months out of the year. Each time I've walked in, the tables are consistently buzzing with people swapping ideas, exchanging stories, and occasionally getting some work done. As with the better shops in town, The Coffee Shop relies on counter service and asks you to order and pick up as needed. There are no wait staff checking in, no bussers clearing tables, and no interruptions to the rhythm of your day. It's a functional third space that just happens to have breakfast items (which I haven't tried yet), an array of baked goods (I never pass up an oatmeal cookie) and a full menu of casual espresso drinks (not great for pourovers or sampling a variety of sourced roasts, but an easy cortado, Americano, Red Eye or latte. And when coffee is the secondary item and you're hitting the first 60-degree days on the calendar, a cardamom-and-honey Cardi B or chocolate-and-cinnamon Mr. Olingo serves as a welcome treat. The Coffee Shop is on Portland's car-driven outskirts, but is in one of the last segments in which people are encouraged to stay a while. It's flanked by Jan's Bookstore, spas, nail salons, yoga studios, Sesame Donuts, and the area's one true diner. It occupies a much-needed space within its far corner of Portland and displays remarkable urban sensibility in an area where it could've simply gone with the flow of suburban traffic. The Coffee Shop isn't your last hope for a cup of coffee before reaching the 'burbs, but it's one of the few true coffee shops this far beyond the tunnels. read more

WOW! I was pleasantly surprised by this one! Normally I find flavored lattes overrated and typically go with a drip coffee. However I tried the Cardi B (cardamom and honey) and was blown away! Not too sweet and perfectly balanced flavors. I also got the breakfast burrito and let me tell you that thing is HUGE! Not the skimpy portions cafes are typically known for. I would highly recommend this spot even though it's a little out of the way. Plenty of dining area and if you wanted to could be a study spot, however I would imagine it may get more loud later in the day. Very nice and helpful service too! read more

My mother stumbled upon this spot next to her nail salon.She was so impressed that she had to have me go there with her and I am so glad I did! Located in a strip mall blink and you may miss it-but look for it and go! The interior is simple,comfortable and clean. You order at the counter and they bring it to you. There are books and games for customers. It's not fancy,but the drinks and food are quite good. We had a delicious carnitas taco the meat and pickled onions were delicious. Our lattes were smooth and full of flavor. Their syrups are house made and I wish they would sell them. Especially,the lavender and cardamom ones. I can't wait to try more delicious drinks.There is also beer and wine and a cute little side bar. The owner,Moose is friendly and welcoming. I appreciate how kind and patient he was with my mother. I was not capable of drinking what was delivered to me. I love giving new spots (new to me) a go. I was starving for some morning food and have been craving a simple smoothie. This popped up for an add on. I chose it because the smoothie was mixed fruit and the other places were just strawberry banana. I should have went anywhere else when asked if I wanted vanilla or chocolate protein without an option to not... It is crazy dark in color, tiny and it tastes like you are drinking vanilla flavoring... not even actual vanilla. That makes any residual fruit flavor basically taste rancid... like the fruit is spoiled. It's also not a smoothie but a mildly blended drink. I love coffee of all kinds, but my drink from here was not even bearable. The espresso was quite literally sour. I couldn't even get myself to finish this little drink, even after sweetening it and trying to cut the acidity with salt. To be fair, it was half espresso & half milk, a concentrated drink, but I think a specialty coffee shop should have decent espresso. The shop itself is a nice place to be. Cute little neighborhood coffee shop . Its got this cozy vibe going without being too fancy . Love the idea that its coffee until booze kind of thing which is a fun little concept. We ordered a cappuccino and a Chai along with a chocolate croissant. The Chai here is made in house and has just the right amount of spices. I see myself come back for it. What i also really appreciate is that they dont pre-sweeten it . Despite the name sounding plain and boring, this place is quite the opposite. My dad, sister, and I wanted coffee in the morning, and this spot was near where we were staying. The space is cute and there's a decent amount of seating. They had a lot more specialty lattes than I was expecting. My dad had the Cozy, my sister had a Mocha, and I had the Cardi Bee. I love how you can control the sweetness levels, and we each got half sweet, which ended up being the perfect amount. The worker at the front was also SO nice and friendly. I will often have a decent amount of modifications on my drinks (with alternative milks and what not), and she was so accommodating. read more

Ive been coming here for a long time. This place used to be good, but my family and I noticed decreasing quality over the time. But after last time I won't go back. We ordered food for our family of 4. Mine and my husband's food came out quickly, but his was cold, and my burrito immediately came apart. No big deal, that can happen. Then we waited and waited for our kid's food. Never came. I asked someone at the front, and they said they would check on it. 15 more minutes nothing. I went up again and asked someone else. Again nothing. I went back up a third time and talked again to both the people I had brought this up with, and they looked at each other and just said "I'm not sure" and kept helping people in line. I should note that I was extremely calm this entire time, because I understand that this can happen, and it's not a big deal if something gets missed. I was just asking for them to check on it. At this point, I get frustrated. Finally, I found a new person to talk to, and he told me, it will be 10 more minutes. I informed him that we had already been waiting 45 minutes (which is a very long time at this particular place) and my husband and I were done with our food, and our kids are hungry. I also said, "I know this isn't your fault, but I have been asking these two at the front for the last 30 minutes and they told me they were checking on it, and they clearly haven't." Luckily, he stopped what he was doing to help us out when he looked at our original receipt and realized we weren't exaggerating. I found out later he came from the kitchen, so he was the person they should have been checking with. So, he did a great job. The experience was mostly upsetting because of the two women behind the counter. The fact that I could nicely and calmly ask over the course of 30 minutes for them to check on my children's food, and to have them show no sense of urgency or even care I was there is crazy. I used to work in that industry and have a lot of respect for the craziness of everything, and how people can be too mean and demanding to the workers. I would never do that, but to have two separate people hear about a problem multiple times and literally do nothing is insane. When I worked in that industry I got reprimanded once because I didn't say "see you again" to a customer as they left. I would have gotten fired if I handled a situation like that. Its now been a few weeks, and I still think about this, so I am writing a review in the hopes that the service will get addressed. This is a small place, and they only have a few workers, and that used to be the charm. I don't want this to turn into a place where the customers just feel like a number on a receipt. But I think it's too late for that. read more

A little shop by the main road that seems to be a favorite amongst the people in the area. Not too many seatings; a couple of tables inside and some outside benches. Drinks were standard good. I liked that my Matcha Latte was unsweetended to begin with, could really enjoy the matcha. Breakfast Sandwiches were good too. Can get them on an English muffin or a bagel. Eggs and meat made fresh. This is a super cute small coffee shop on 5 corners with some really delicious breakfast items. I came here for the Avocado toast specifically and was pleasantly surprised! I got it with a fried egg and the bread was locally made multigrain, one slice. But the best part of the avocado toast was the seasonings. It gave Tajin vibes but there was definitely more to it and it was sooo good. The avocado toast was about $7.25 alone and adding the egg was 3 more dollars which I thought was a little steep. But it would have been equally delightful without the egg if you're looking to keep it cheap.
