Original review: Paul Douglas is the single greatest colorist/stylist/everything, ever, and the Colour Room is lucky to have him. New York City-trained and very experienced, Paul is super friendly and makes you feel at ease while he works his pure genius on your hair. I've followed Paul through a few salons now because his work is so amazing. Random people on the street stop me all the time to comment on my hair--something that never used to happen to me before. The Colour Room is a cool space, too. Open and relaxing, but modern. Not stuffy or pretentious at all. I really like it a lot and will continue to go back for as long as Paul stays there! His prices are good and I refer all of my friends to him. Seriously, give Paul a try. She has done a fantastic job on my color and cut for the last several years and I will not go to anyone else! My review is for Petya! I wanted to write a review here bc she didn't have a lot of reviews on yelp and I thought this might help someone. Petya did a great job with my dirty blonde, hard to lift hair. I'm super particular about my color and like to go for that lived in, but bright blonde. She nailed it! I reached out to her via text and she asked for photos of my hair, and photos of what I wanted. She was able to get me in with just a few days notice, and spent ALL afternoon on my hair. She's definitely a perfectionist. I used to go to a salon and spend almost double what I spent with Petya, and leave feeling disappointed. I'll also note, she struck a great balance between chatting with me and cracking jokes, and giving me space which is an art form most hairdressers don't possess! He spent the first portion of my appointment getting to know my hair, hair concerns, and to develop a process that he thought would address it all. I moved across town though & had to shop hop for a while, trying whoever was in walking distance or had a groupon, thinking I'd find 'the one' again. How good is Amanda Moss? She has been my go to lady for hair for the past 4.5 years. She's so good that my sister will take the train down from Michigan 2-3 times a year to get a haircut from Amanda. This place was a little out of my price range, but I decided to go anyway to get a balayage and cut. I haven't gotten my hair done professionally before, so I was willing to dish out some extra cash to have it done "right". Unfortunately, Brittany was unable to lift the color I had in my hair (a semi permanent wash out blue) - she took the time to explain why, and was very informative - so, we decided it would be best not to go through with the balayage at this time, and just do the cut. The cut took us about 20 minutes, and I was pretty horrified to get slammed with a near $100 bill. I believe I was charged for the "lift", that did not work, as well as a pretty overpriced haircut (prices were displayed on their website, but the price I had personally discussed with her was for the balayage + cut). I liked Brittany, but I felt that because we weren't able to do what we initially set out to do, she should have thrown me a bone (and definitely not charged for the lift that didn't do the trick - maybe even offer an incentive to get me to come back) read more

She was super easy to book an appointment with over the phone. She got me in the next day. Wowowow! Matt did an amazing job with my color correction. I came to him from another stylist at a different salon with color I just wasn't thrilled with and he straight up worked magic on my hair. Amanda Moss is INCREDIBLE. I was referred to her the beginning of this year by a colleague of mine. I must say, she was professional while making me feel as at home as possible. I made a huge change and had decided to cut off 10 inches. Yes, 10 INCHES!!!! Before Amanda even scheduled my appointment, she wrote me an email telling me more about herself and her background so I would start to feel more comfortable with her. Once I was in there, it was so comfortable, I didn't shed one tear while she was cutting. Amanda officially transformed me into a short hair girl! I also referred her to do wedding hair for my friend's wedding (Dee W.) and let me tell you - she did a fantastic job this weekend. She came out to the hotel and had under 4 hours to do 6 bridesmaids and a Bride. Everyone's hair turned out incredibly beautiful, sharp and unique in each person's own way. And I'll definitely have to add, she made my best friend look like a glowing bride! She even left us an emergency can of hairspray for the rest of the day. Everything at the Colour Room started out OK of course--I read the glowing reviews below, called for an appointment, received a call back from Jessica giving me the exact day and time I wanted, and arrived promptly. Jessica was nice, though I find my first interaction with a stylist is always a little stilted and awkward. As she put the highlighting foils in my hair we covered the basics--how long have I been in Chicago (6 weeks), why did I move here (law school), do I miss anything about Mississippi (NO!) I have a tendency to be a little vague in describing what I want out of a haircut, but there were three things I was very specific about: I wanted warm, caramel/honey highlights, I didn't want my bangs to be any thicker (previous bad experience), and though I did want layers, I wanted them to be long and integrated, not like shelf one, shelf two. The highlights, in fairness, turned out great. I really like the color and she incorporated the high and lowlights well. But the cut was a different story--she cut extra hair for my bangs and my layers are choppy and overly blunt (oh look, there's shelf one, there's shelf two). It's exactly what I (said I) didn't want. Also, when she was cutting my bangs (which go straight across), there was an entire section on the right side of my face that was a good 1/2 inch longer than the rest, which she just left! And I had to ask her--twice--to fix it. So you know what? Actually, I changed my mind. I do miss one crucial thing about Mississippi--my stylist. read more

Lynzie did an absolutely amazing job! I had a pretty bad experience at another salon that "specializes" in the Deva Curl cut. I was very weary about getting another Deva Cut. Lynzie did an AMAZING job. She spent over 30 minutes on the cut alone. I had brought in pictures and we spent a good amount of time discussing the cut. And it's exactly what I wanted. It's perfect. Next was the color. At the previous salon I went to I had gotten my hair basically painted on and my growth was atrocious and the color was yellow, not blond at all. Lynzie fixed the color to make it natural. It's beautiful. I couldn't say anything bad about my experience if I tried. She was extremely knowledgeable about curly hair. I decided to go to the Colour Room after reading all the rave reviews on Yelp. After seeing that Amanda had so many great reviews, I made an appointment with her. We chatted over the phone about what my hair currently looked like, and the changes I wanted to make to it. When I came in for my appointment, she warmly greeted me and asked me if I wanted a glass of wine. I knew immediately that this was going to be a great experience! I told her I wanted something different, but I wasn't exactly sure what. She put red and blonde highlights in my hair, and they turned out to be amazing! I was so, so excited and I'm definitely making her my new colorist. The salon itself is really cool - everyone is extremely friendly, and you feel like you're just hanging out with a bunch of friends while beautifying yourself. Based on Yelper reviews, I decided to try this salon since everyone was gushing. I called and got Jessica. The first time I went she gave me one of the best cuts I'd ever gotten in my life. We discussed, I had photos, all good. The second time I saw her though, it was the worst cut. She spent 5 minutes trimming a quarter inch off my hair which wasn't enough, not updating the layers or anything, and then 30 minutes drying it. She remembered me, or she said she did, so I was hoping I'd get the same stellar cut. Maybe it was because she was on the tail end of a cold, maybe it was something else, I don't know. I've never been offered a glass of wine or a beer. When I've walked in, the women working there all look at me funny, like I just came out from under a rock. I'm just a normal looking person, nothing odd or scary about me. Maybe it's because I don't look Lakeview or Lincoln Park, who knows. I don't know if I'll be back. To all my curly girls...please ask for Lynzie you no regret it. Awesome personality but the most important point of the entire experience Lynzie really knows how to work with curly hair. I've never left a salon loving my natural curls more. I'm in love with my hair and she only used three products conditioner, a little gel and a moisturizing leave in spray. I've got bangs too...for a curly girl that's a scary thought but everything came out perfectly...100% better than I ever imagined. OK, so let's just say that I don't usually make a big deal out of my hair. It's not that I don't care what I look like. It's just that I'm just really busy and unfortunately I usually don't realize that I need a haircut until it's almost too late. That was me a week ago..... Then along comes Paul. A friend recommended that I look at this guy's yelp reviews and that I give him a try. "If he can't get you to be serious about your hair," I was told, "no one can." So I booked a simple appointment to have my hair cut on Saturday. First off, the salon is in a really cool part of Lakeview. Totally easy to get to, right between the Paulina and Addison brown line stops. The atmosphere is modern, comfortable, relaxed. There were 8 or so stylists there and they all seemed to be busy ... but not rushed. Paul's station is toward the front, near the windows and it gives a real organic and "open" feel to the place. Very nice but not over-the-top. As soon as I sat in Paul's chair, I knew I was in good hands. "What's up with the mullet?" he said as soon as I sat down. "You're sure this is the image you want to project?" He was right, and I knew it. I tried to give explanations, but he'd have no part of it. I surrendered and told him to do whatever he felt was necessary to keep me from looking like I live in West Virginia. Snip snip snip ... thirty minutes later and I looked like a rock star. I freakin' love it. He clipped up the back and the sides real clean and left the tops and bangs somewhat longish to give a real '80's post-punk sort of look. Very hip, yet professional at the same time. No more mullets for me ... I'm swearing off of them for good! I had a good time while I was there, too. All the stylists over on Paul's side of the salon were laughing and joking around. They all seemed to get along really well which made the overall atmosphere really fun. I kinda checked out what the other stylists were doing to their clients and everyone seemed to be doing really cool work. There were some color services and cuts, it seemed like a lot of variety. Paul's prices were reasonable. He gave me a "menu" with his prices and let's just say he's the best bargain in the city. Since I have a bad habit of waiting to the last minute, I've seen a lot of stylists in the city, and believe me, this guy is one of the best! I booked my next appointment right on the spot and I swear I'll keep it. Paul really did get me to think differently about my hair.
