Always a top-notch dining experience at Common Man Merrimack, and today was no exception. Started with Almost Escargot, stuffed mushrooms; the best ever. From there, onion soup and Common Salad for my dining partner, and pesto haddock for myself. Everything was perfection. Chocolate dessert and cheesecake rounded out our lunch. I've been to this location a few times because it's convenient and it's typically okay enough. The last time I had the pork belly appetizer and it was not good at all, nor was the soup of the day (a sausage pasta tomato based thing). But their Buffalo chicken empanadas are usually very good. Everything else is just m'eh so I've taken a break for several months. Today we did takeout. The restaurant is about 16 minutes from my house and I tracked the delivery driver, who came straight here and we collected the food immediately. I did notice he had to wait for our order at the restaurant, which I'm assuming is part of the reason our food arrived freezing cold. Not lukewarm, totally cold. I get it, it's delivery, but this was unacceptable. The arancini was absolutely flavorless, like eating plain white rice fried. The sauce was equally flavorless. The smokehouse burger was a hot mess and not cooked per instructions. Cold fries are also unpleasant. The mac and cheese kids meal seemed okay to my son but came without the drink he ordered and I asked for fries but got a salad. The pot roast was also flavorless with a brick of cold mashed potatoes and no braised vegetables per the menu description. The empanadas had good flavor but again, stone cold. I also very clearly asked for crackers, dip, and breads with every item ordered - it's a specific line item in the app for every item you order - and we received none. I realize it's complimentary but it really isn't as they factor that complimentary addition into their food pricing. If you've ever eaten here you probably know that a good part of the experience is their dip station, the bread basket, and the white chocolate. I expected that with my meal and as I ordered. For the amount we ordered and the cost, I was thoroughly unimpressed and won't be returning or ordering from them again any time soon. read more

For 25 years, Ashland Common Man has been our family's go/to place for dinner at the beginning of vacation and lunch at the end. We would rate it 5 Stars every year. Only 3 Stars this year. A soup of the day -gazpacho- was so off point. The green soup was flavorless. Even worse it had not been strained through a chinois so I had to chew my soup. On another visit, the baked shrimp dish was not prepared according to the description. I got par baked shrimp with a small toss of breadcrumbs and very little flavor. The server comped the dish as I ate only one of the scallops. But I'm craving their baked scallops of yesteryear. read more

Randomly stopped in earlier this fall at this location and was very happy to see all the COVID safety precautions being taken! They had tables clearly marked as unavailable throughout to keep people distanced inside, including at the bar, and everyone was wearing masks. The common man ranges from 3-4 stars depending on the day. Today we went for some apps and dinner around 7. It was very busy so we found a table in the bar. They may have been understaffed as about 7-8 tables were open but covered in dirty plates. Our waitress quickly cleaned our table which was great. The buffalo chicken empanadas were very good with the avocado ranch. The almost escargot was ok. For dinner we got the chicken sandwich which was tender and juicy. The fries were pretty good. The blackened chicken tacos were ok, but we were surprised that the chicken was just pulled chicken. It was tasty but there was a lot of slaw which took them over a bit. The apple walnut chicken is always a hit and they gave a large helping of mashed, which are also always good here! We love the atmosphere of the bar area and the old charm. Our waitress was ok, much kinder to the group around us than to us and the other tables. Attentive, but not friendly. read more

We have been to various Common Man locations over the years and have always enjoyed our visit. However, this time was a very unpleasant experience. We were there for a seminar function so the menu offering was limited. My wife and I opted for "The Rooster" which was a very small piece of grilled chicken in a roll (a chicken sandwich). They should have been totally embarrassed to serve the one they gave me. To say it was over-cooked would be an inaccurate statement. It was burnt to a charcoal crisp. It was basically inedible. I'm not one for sending back food, especially in a setting such as the one we were in. The other issue besides the food was the cleanliness of the restaurant. I realize it is a very old building and it looks rustic, but there is a big difference between rustic and clean. The floors were so sticky that the seminar host made several appologies about how loud the sticking sound was to his shoes as he shifted his feet during the presentation. Might be time to, "clean house" at this location. read more

Jesse was PHENOMENAL! He was basically entertainment for both our table and the group of women behind us. He embodies hospitality and really enjoys what he does. Very knowledgeable, personable, and customer centric (he even remembered serving us the last time we were there). We did have a mess up with the Kitchen very much undercooking the Salmon, but Jesse handle it with grace and made sure to have his Manager take care of it and he did not make the interaction uncomfortable whatsoever. No one enjoys complaining, but he welcomed the feedback and commiserated with us while offering options to help. Best service, so even though there was an issue with the kitchen quality, I still give Jesse five stars! Give him a bonus, he could sell hay to a horse! read more

Then when we got home and unpacked it they put in a very nice side of crackers and dip again nice touch...Also added nice fresh rolls and there maple honey butter.. nice touch.. my wife got the Haddock special which was cooked perfect for $9.99 and I got the Hamburger which also was cooked perfect and the bun was delicious.. last the also gave us a $10.00 coupon for use in June.... This years valentines specials were absolutely amazing, O..M..G the cranberry chicken was the best thing I've had at a common man over the last 8 years of dining here! My wife's halibut dinner and cheesecake were tasty too. It was so good! Also Our server Jo Jo was so nice and helpful, she was great. Perfect early evening dinner outdoors! Attentive wait person with good timing on drink refills and additional cheeses & crackers, before our meals were served. We started to feast on our free breads, crackers and spreads, while sipping on our drafts of Blue Moon White Ale icy cold goodness! After enduring long periods of "shut-in" time due to COVID, this was such a great way to relax and enjoy outdoor meal time. Hope Common Man keeps the picnic table dining when the pandemic is behind us. Add some white lights around the trees and it would definitely be our "nice weather" go to spot. The Meals: The Apple Walnut Chicken was so good! It had an apple stuffing, and was drizzled with a maple cream that added just the right finish to the chicken. Mashed potatoes were the chosen side dish. The Boursin Burger, cooked medium well, was flavorful & juicy! It was topped with cheddar cheese, bacon slices, braised onions, and their boursin spread. It needed more boursin but that was easily remedied by taking some from our dish of boursin that was served w/our crackers. Some more drafts and then dessert. We chose the Chocolate Ding Dang Dong, which is like a Ring Ding or a Ding Dong, but soooooooo much better! Indulgent chocolate w/fresh whipped cream on the side. Yum! Not one misstep. This common man restaurant is one of my favorite locations! It has such a cozy vibe to it and our servers are always so friendly & helpful. Our most recent visit was on Valentine's Day & the chocolate covered strawberry martini was absolutely delicious, definitely one of my new favorite drinks! I will note that it was a special, however I hope they add it to their drink menu for good. The scallops at any common man are always amazing - the lemon butter sauce definitely makes the dish! And I always have to get the chocolate ding dang dong, it is such a unique dessert and my family has been ordering this for ages! Would highly recommend this location for any occasion - a date night or family dinner. It never disappoints! read more

My family and I visited this restaurant this weekend, we thought it would be as good as the Common Man restaurant in Windam , New Hampshire; it was not. The food was mediocre, the waitress was ok but seemed overwhelmed. Before we ordered our meal i had presented her with a Common Man coupon for joining their website, she had no idea what it was. I had explain it to her. The room where we were placed had serval flies, flying around. We mention it to the manager but to no avail. He just smile and shrugged it off. The food is excellent and her cheerful disposition and attentive manner make it a pleasure to dine here. We tried the Ahi Tuna Salad for the first time and it was excellent, we always enjoy the food here. The lobster corn chowder is a favorite here. Let me start off by saying, I don't think I've ever written a review for any restaurant, and I'm disappointed I feel the need to have to write a bad one now. Ordered the apple walnut chicken to go. Last time I received it, came with bread, while chocolate, and the maple sauce on the side that is for the chicken. This time, I received a burnt piece of dry chicken, with none of the maple cream on the side (the only thing that makes this meal stand out, and the only reason I ordered it) no bread, and none of the chocolate. We had to drive all the way back to receive at least the cream sauce that the meal is supposed to come with. The manager at the restaurant did not apologize for the burnt chicken without the sauce, said the bread was extra(not sure why they gave it to us before then, and is included on the meal description) and then handed us the maple sauce in a to go box that said "what a deal, another meal!" Not sure why they would write that on the box, when no comp meal was presented, and did not offer to switch out the meal at all. Terrible customer service. Just moved to this area, and sad to say I will not be going here again. read more

This is also another one of those "old style" places with extremely uncomfortable chairs. What a great, charming, family restaurant. This building was made in the 1700's (I can't remember which year), and the staff is amazing. I think my favorite part about the restaurant was the good service. Our waiter was so sweet, and the manager even came by to ask us how our experience was. Nice touch! The complimentary cracker bar was my favorite. The cracker dips are AMAZING, especially The Common Man Sauce! I ordered the BLT with fried tomatoes. WOW. Extremely heavy, but phenomenal. I love how you have options for a side (pasta salad, potato chips, and fries). The fries were a little thick for my personal liking, but they were crispy and fried to perfection. This cozy little old converted house is a delight to dine in. The historic feel adds to the experience while you enjoy your meal.
