I was really impressed with the service and food quality at continental. We bad a group of 15 for a work lunch party. One server took care of our whole table and not one drink was left unfilled. Our food came out hot and almost all at the same time. I had a turkey sandwich with cranberry sauce and a side of sweet potato fries. I did not hear a single complaint from anyone in our group only positive remarks and amazement that they were able to take care of so many of us with such high quality. Deciding where to go to brunch in Richmond is always a tricky thing when my fiancee's parents come up. We spend literally hours talking about it and looking at menus and pictures before realizing that we both wanted to come here, but never got around to doing it. Our biggest mistake was not coming here sooner. --Food: I normally go for a burger around lunch time at a place I haven't been before, but I was in a brunchy mood so I got the berry french toast. Holy cow, I'm glad I did, because it was probably the best french toast I've ever eaten. The french toast itself wasn't the star, but rather the dish as a whole. There are 3 large pieces of french toast, each piece of french toast had a layer of fresh berries in between, and was accompanied with a greek yogurt whipped cream. It took me the better part of an hour to eat it all, but because it was so good I finished just about all of it. I was a total fatass, but it was totally worth it. My fiancee had chicken and waffles, her mother had banana foster waffles, and her father had continental popovers. All of them enjoyed what they ordered. --Cost: The Continental Westhampton isn't a cheap diner, and alongside an interesting menu with quality and local ingredients comes a bit of a price tag. It won't break the bank, but our 4 dishes with small beverages came to around $50. Each dish itself though was super large and filling and well worth the $10 price tag. --Atmosphere: The inside isn't small, but it was a busy place for a weekend brunch. Large tables and ample parking are also positives. When we were leaving there was a line out the door. --Service: Our waiter was a pretty chill guy and answered questions about the menu. We had to wait a bit of time for our food, but were given the reason why (I guess they only have 1 waffle maker?). No qualms with service overall, but it might not be an in-and-out place if that's what you had in mind. --Overall: One of the best brunches I've ever had. When they say portions are large, they are large! BF had the chicken and waffles which was very large leg and thigh and typical big waffle. Not sure if dark meat goes as well with waffles but wasn't stellar (favorite chicken and waffles in the area is Selba - I'm open to suggestions). The chicken by itself was a good fried chicken. Also the syrup was from a single serve container. I had the breakfast nachos (not sure the name) because I love nachos and it was close enough to lunch. This was also huge. It had scrambled egg, chorizo, black beans and cheese. The eggs were a little overdone for my taste as was the chorizo but overall pretty darn tasty. I hate wasting food though and wish we had a 3rd person to help us eat. It did not help that we got a side of bacon....I know. It was thick and not sure if we were overstuffed or what but it was just ok. The waitress was very sweet and attentive without being intrusive. BF was a little messy with the coffee and she noticed and made this right without us asking. I'd definitely go again but be more mindful of what I was ordering. Stopped in at Continental Westhampton for brunch with Mom, I had never been before, she had been to the original Phil's Continental Lounge with my dad before they were married. We were greeted as though we were old friends or regulars, surprisingly no wait for a table at just a quarter til noon, and we had a great waitress who was patient with us as we read the menu...so many choices. Drinks: Mom had a traditional Bloody Mary which she said was great, I was happy to see Buskey Cider here and ordered one, our waitress asked if I had had it before, when I told her yes, she said they were excited to be carrying it and it was very new in the restaurant. Food: mom ordered the Maple Sausage Corn dogs, when they arrived, our waitress said they were darker than usual and if they tasted overcooked they would do another batch. Well these were awesome, if they were overcooked we wouldn't have known it because they tasted great, loved the taste of the sausage with the sweet crispy pancake. The home fries were just ok. I ordered "the General", a breakfast pie loaded up with breakfast meats, topped with an egg. What the what. It was crazy, I wasn't sure about the whole wheat crust at first but it was good and tasted even better left over the next day. We lucked out getting a parking spot right out front on a drizzly morning, like many of the shops on Grove Ave, parking can be a challenge. With the recent takedown of the Westhampton Theater, I am not sure if the parking lot that used to be behind the area still exists. With so many great brunch and lunch options and such welcoming people working here, we will surely be back soon. read more

I love eating brunch here! I've been multiple times, and I feel like every time I order, no matter what, it's delicious! This time I got the Continental Benedict which was amazing. They give you a very generous portion of everything, including a HUGE piece of toast with eggs on top, horseradish dressing and big chunks of brisket. I do think the service could be a tad better sometimes as they are constantly busy and probably tired and have to deal with a lot of customers. Great for brunch! read more

Subsequent visits to CW have been equally delicious and delightful since my first review. DH and I plan on frequenting this place a lot more often. On this visit, Friday Night Date Night, it was crowded, but not enough to turn us away. We were seated within a few minutes and promptly served the house speciality of limeades (one with and one without the vodka). We decided to order several different things to taste, try and share. DH went straight for the Lobster Roll. I got the Lamb Sliders and the Disco Fries. My old neighbor from NJ used to talk about Disco Fries, which are apparently a staple in NJ diners, and how much she missed them. So here was my chance to finally give them a try. But with Tasso ham, my guess was these would be slightly gussied up Disco Fries. The lobster roll was gorgeous! Almost too pretty to eat. Almost. With huge chunks of meat and just enough dressing to make the salad moist and oh-so-tasty. My lamb sliders, 3 to an order, were served on little pitas. The flavor was subtle at first, but was very nice and satisfying. Now for the Disco Fries... this dish reminds me of Poutine. Fries, gravy and cheese and some fancy Tasso ham in this version. Decadent, filling and yummy. Being southern, I love gravy and this was an especially tasty gravy. I would absolutely order this again and again. Well done, CW! I look forward to next time. read more

This is such a delicious brunch spot! We are from NC and were visiting some friends when they suggested this place for brunch, and after looking at the reviews we were sold! We went at peak brunch time and they were obviously pretty busy, but they were able to accommodate us pretty quickly and we had excellent service. I decided to try the maple sausage corn dogs with home fries and, wow, was this dish good! This was such a delicious brunch twist on pigs in a blanket- sweet, salty, and savory all at the same time. The dish also came with crispy and well-seasoned home fries, which made a perfect side dish. My husband opted for the chicken and waffles. The chicken was moist and fried to perfection paired with the fluffy Belgian waffle and syrup made for such a delicious bite! The Continental Westhampton has a fairly large lunch/dinner menu with a few menu items that are only available after 5:00 pm. We went for lunch and enjoyed it. My husband ordered the French Style Mussels which he said were delicious. These were served in a broth of white wine, butter, shallots, cream, tomato, celery, garlic and parsley. Crostinis were served with this to dip in the broth. I chose the single burger with cheese, cooked pink. The burger was properly cooked, juicy, flavorful and quite delicious and I would order again. It is served with lettuce, onion, tomato and a dill pickle chunk. Ask for the condiments you prefer. The burger is served with your choice of fries, house made chips, apple jicama slaw, or vinaigrette tossed greens. There are a variety of burgers with pre-toppings to choose from or you can choose yourself. The French fries I received with my burger were lukewarm and soggy. I mentioned this to my server and they were replaced with fresh fries that were hot and crispy and quite good. Overall the burger and fries were a good selection but I do want to try the apple jicama slaw and also many of the other items on the menu. As for the atmosphere, this is a casual restaurant/diner, but the music volume was much too loud -- uncomfortably so. I would recommend that someone with good hearing be the one who adjusts it's volume. A better quality of jelly, jam, and syrup should be served with brunch. I am sure you can find something better than Smuckers and can serve real maple syrup, also. As a side note, I LOVE the style of crushed iced served with the beverages. The inside of the restaurant was retro and chic at the same time, I really liked the high ceilings and the sky lights give a great, natural light atmosphere. Had always heard great things about the brunch at The Continental Westhampton, but having relocated to Chesterfield a few years ago, we LITERALLY, never find ourselves in the near west end for brunch. Well, it wasn't that long ago where we were meeting some friends that were coming from the far west end for brunch, so we shamelessly suggested that we meet at TCW so we could finally check it out. On the plus side, they say a crowded restaurant is a good sign. Apparently TCW has gotten so popular that they have basically put a tarp over their patio and have outdoor seating in the winter. Well, that was easily my biggest complaint as it was not terribly comfortable having my back to the cold, drafty wind and a heater blowing in my face. While the food and service was great, I recommend that you sit inside. Speaking of the food, it was really good. The wife went with the Chicken & Waffles and I got the Benedict Continental (house smoked brisket, sauteed onions, portobello mushrooms, served on popovers vs. the typical english muffin). The benedict was awesome and the combo of the brisket and the poached eggs was great. The Chicken & Waffle was chicken and waffles, but the chicken was really juicy. There are a ton of other things on the menu that we would like to try, so we will definitely be back...hopefully soon. read more

If you are looking for a local spot that has delicious and ridiculously huge portions, you've found your place with The Continental! We went for brunch recently and met up with some friends who had been there before for dinnertime, never brunch. We got there and got a seat within 10 minutes. Could have opted for the table that is right at the front, but the hostesses seemed to know that this was a really undesirable table (it's right next to the door in a really weird nook, pretty awkward), so they said basically "You can seat now, or wait for a better table, and I believe 2 of them are leaving". So considerate! Got a huge booth for the 4 of us (all of their booths are large), and we ordered mimosas and coffees and what not. The waitstaff was slammed that day, so we didn't see our server for quite awhile. Didn't mind necessarily because we were catching up with friends, but duly noted for the future if we come here by ourselves. I ordered their Continental Pancake, Hubs ordered the breakfast pizza, and both of these dishes were INSANE. I naively thought that mine was going to just be like the ingredients of a reuben sandwich baked into the pancake (based on the description), but NO - it was a monster of a pancake (which was delicious, with some type of chives in it) folded over and the innards of a reuben were stuffed inside. It was probably the most ridiculous thing that I've eaten for brunch, but it was insanely good. Hub's pizza was super huge, and filling to the point that he could only eat half (it's supposed to be a personal size!). I really wish we had just split a dish, we know better now for next time! Prices were decent, even more so for the size of your portions. Love the ambiance here, wish we lived closer so we could walk here instead of driving (you know, to burn off all those ridiculous calories that you'll inevitably consume)! read more

I came here for the first time last weekend with a large group. I actually can't remember the name of what I ordered and wasn't able to find it on the online menu, but it was a burrito of crispy pork belly and chorizo - I was very happy with it! It was super savory and extremely filling ... actually all of the portions were huuuge. I had a second meal to take home, but hey, I'm not complaining. Since it was a beautiful spring day, we sat outside and I wasn't able to take a peak inside the establishment, but from what I could tell, it was very busy and very popular. My friends had the continental club and a version of some nachos. I tried both but definitely did not enjoy them quite as much as my burrito. The only thing that I thought was strange was that one of our friends asked if they had just regular pancakes, and the answer was "no". I felt it a little strange that there was an option to get banana pancakes but to get just plain ones were not. Overall I had a good experience there and would definitely visit again ... but not for plan pancakes :) read more

Current menu, that I am sure is a response to Covid, is fine for lunch with its sandwiches, burgers, salads and pizza, but there is a poor selection of entrees for dinner. The old menu was extensive with multiple dinner entree options. I miss those choices. Vodka limeades are like heaven! Especially for a hot day... they are super exciting. I also love the fries (I have had both varieties!)... each of them is a well-seasoned delight. This is a great place for happy hour after work... especially if you live nearby. The bartenders and staff are super nice, attentive, and great at recommending drinks! The only reason why they didn't get 5 stars is that it is currently adjacent to a construction zone, soooo jackhammers and normal hammers sounds are all around... Four of us came for Sunday Brunch right at the 9:30 open...There was already a little line forming, but we got seated and within moments had orange juices and coffees all around. Had we wanted to, and I kinda wish we had wanted to, there were the most charming pitchers of mimosas going 'round to most tables! We had a feast. Our table tried the "breakfast of champions", breakfast Nachos, brilliant, in an mountain of chips and breakfast goodness. YUM! This could be split as a breakfast appetizer, easy. I tried the Brisket Benedict: Giant slices of delectable brisket served with Yorkshire pudding, potatoes, hollandaise and asparagus. It was HUGE and could be split, ladies. The Cast Iron Lamb Skillet came out in a ceramic bowl (?) but was delicious and another MONSTROUS portion! And finally the biggest hit at the table- the Maple Sausage Corndogs. YUM. Updating to say: You can't have a bad meal here. It's impossible. I wish that The Continental Westhampton were MY neighborhood watering hole. But, alas, we make the 20 or so minute drive to come here every so often because this is one place where we can go and never ever be disappointed. I usually stick to the kale salad with shrimp (which is phenomenal), but the other night I was feeling like trying something new. We ordered mussels to start. We've been ordering mussels pretty much everywhere we go to try to find the best ones in Richmond. I'd be confident in saying that these surpassed my previous favorite. The broth was so good, we asked for extra bread twice to soak up all the goodness. With our meal starting off on such a high note, I decided to cheat on my usual kale salad and order the lobster and shrimp roll on wheat bread with a side of mixed greens. It was so amazing! The salad was perfectly dressed and the lobster roll was excellent. Tons of plump, juicy lobster chunks with equally delicious pieces of shrimp. Husband really enjoyed his burger as well! Service was great, atmosphere was as expected. Now for the food; I ordered the adobo chicken (1/2 roast chicken) and it was ok. Nothing special but very good. My wife ordered the east Hampton salad and it wasn't good. The chicken was completely dry, so much so that when I had a bite I had to drink a lot of water to get it down. Very disappointed with that. We also ordered some appetizers and they were good and as expected so my only complaint is about the chicken that was on their salad. That was just bone dry and difficult to eat. read more

This is my third time going to this place but my first brunch time. I have done dinners here and enjoyed it very much but today was a total different experience. Food was ok, my friends French roast was so dry it requires a lot of syrup. But this was not why I only give them a one star. There was one server that made us very uncomfortable and the ambience was not inviting at that time of the day. The male server ask everyone around our table how the food was and how they were doing except for us. Water was filled by him to all other tables but ours. This was very surprising to me here in VA. I don't want to say is because I am a visible minority and so is my friend. I never had this problem there but this older server man was not pleasant. My server in the other hand was awesome. The vibe is very chill and laid back. We ordered lunch (lobster roll and club) and it was awesome. Myself and my family have been coming here for years. I've never had a bad meal. Some dishes are better than others, and a lot of this depends on one's personal tastes. I would argue that they are unparalleled for burgers and sandwiches and fries. In fact the burgers are so good that they blow every competitor out of the water. Burger Bach, Citizen Burger, etc. have nothing on this place. Service is always good enough if not better than average. They make great tequila cocktails- that's all I can speak to you since that's all I order. Decent beer selection per my husband. Kids menu is great too they serve a decent size burger for only 6.99. In the past I've also ordered salads and pastas which are also good. May not be the highlight of this place but they definitely hold around. No complaints here wonderful place. read more

*SPOILER ALERT: There was hair in my food.* I first came to the Continental a year or two ago for a farewell lunch for my coworker with our boss. The three of us each decided to get the four sides as a meal, and I remember everything being wonderfully delicious. My boss got the house chips which I recall being AMAZING. Fast forward to now. The atmosphere is still funky and cool, and this time of year there are Christmas decorations and giant ornaments hanging from the ceiling. It was about 1pm when we came with a party of 5, but only had to wait about 3 minutes for a table big enough to fit us all. Again I ordered the four sides as a meal because I wasn't feeling a sandwich, I'm not a salad gal, and some of the other mouthwatering items on the "Fork & Knife" section are only available after 5pm (darn it!). I picked the mushrooms, broccolini with Asiago cheese, Brussels sprouts with sriracha, honey and lime, and the housemade chips because I recalled loving them so much when my boss ordered them a year ago. Everything came out looking great. Most of it tasted fine--the mushrooms and broccolini were very salty, and I'm not sure if I'm very sensitive to salt since I cut it out of my diet, or if the cooks were just heavy-handed with the salt. The chips were not as I recalled and they were very browned, which I assumed they'd been left in the oil too long, and they seemed pretty tasteless to me. The broccolini was fine, the mushrooms were fine, and the Brussels sprouts were not what I was expecting. They weren't roasted, and therefore not crunchy. They were probably sauteed, but the sauce didn't seem to stick to the sprouts and they were sitting in a decent amount of the liquid gathering at the bottom of the bowl that contained them. i had to press each sprout down to the bottom of the bowl to get some flavor on them, which, when I succeeded, they tasted good. Each vegetable bowl, once I'd eaten enough to discover, was swimming in leftover oil or butter or whatever liquid they were cooked in. It looked so unappetizing and contributed to some sogginess and greasiness in the vegetables, especially to the sprouts and the broccolini. The meal also came with a piece of jalapeno cornbread. Which had a hair in it. I prefer plain, sweet cornbread. I also prefer my cornbread WITHOUT any hair. After discovering that, I really lost my appetite for my meal. I did not mention this to anyone else at my table or even the waitress, because I didn't want to make a big deal out of it because I hate confrontation. I should have said something so they knew to watch out for that in the future. I asked the waitress for to-go boxes and unfortunately it was the situation where she took my plate to the back to box herself, which I didn't want, because she of course dumped ALL the liquid from each bowl into the to go boxes as well, which then of course spilled out into the bag she put everything in, and I had to ask for a new bag. I really loved this place when I came a year or so ago, but this recent experience makes me question my memory. I may or may not give it another shot in a few months. read more

Since I'm usually visiting restaurants alone, I have this idea that I can just show up, be seated right away, and leave without much fuss. False. Well, it was false when I tried to visit The Continental Westhampton for lunch during a busy weekend day. This goes to show just how popular this restaurant is and I learned that there is good reason for that popularity. I had the Lamb Cast Iron from the brunch menu with sourdough toast. It was a very filling meal. They do not skip on the portions of any element. Lots of potatoes, lamb, and goat cheese. If that wasn't enough, the added toast and two eggs made this quite the feast. The flavors were all wonderful and everything was cooked nicely and to order. The staff was definitely busied by the rush but everyone was very nice. I'll look forward to coming back and trying more. The Continental Westhampton - Lamb cast iron - New American Near Me - Richmond, Virginia

I visited The Continental Westhampton with family during a quick stop in Richmond while traveling south. Despite the winter day, we say outside on their enclosed, heated patio and were comfortable for most of the dining experience. We started with the "Cone of Dirty Chips." They must have dropped the cone idea as these were just served in a basket. They were ok. I wish there had been more of all of the toppings. We had heard raves about the hot dogs, so we all got one. Mine with chili, slaw, and mustard. I was majorly disappointed when I saw that the chili wasn't hot dog chili and had beans in it. To top that, the flavor was odd - too sweet. The apple jicama slaw just wasn't a good pairing for this dog. There wasn't enough of it to counter the chili and it just got lost. The novelty of the size of the dog was something. It really is gigantic. The "bun" is fantastic toasted/buttered bread. Yum. The hot dog itself is very good too and had good flavor. I got a mixed greens salad for my side. They aren't kidding with the name. The salad is just mixed greens and lettuce. I would go back and get another hot dog but I would definitely choose different topics. We arrived a little before 11:00am and there was a crowd out front. Our wait was less than 30 minutes though.. The place is a small but lively college/sports atmosphere. The place really gets crowded in waves but they manage to keep things moving. Our service was adequate as we sat on the covered patio. It was the perfect day to sit outside and it allowed us to people watch. The server we had was busy and focused. Not real warm and fuzzy but we chalked it up to getting people in and out. She was helpful when it came to questions regarding what to order. A little warmth peaked through. The food was delicious. Everyone was satisfied with their dish. The kitchen was a tad slow getting out the orders but definitely worth the wait. The orders at the table were the popovers with Apple butter, lobster roll, waffles with sausage and bacon, French toast with berries, chicken and waffles with side eggs. I tasted everything and there was not a bad dish. The scrambled eggs were the best I have eaten. Fluffy and buttery. Now as for what I actually ordered (lol) the lobster roll. Toasted and buttery New England split too roll with plenty of lobster along with a side order of sweet potato fries. Tasty and well worth the money.
