Love the atmosphere they have created in this new restaurant. Could easily become my favorite place in Blacksburg. Let's start by saying the Brussels sprouts appetizers are the best. The different ways they prepare oysters is awesome. The choices on the menu for your meal is great from seafood (the blacken salmon my favorite) to pastas and ribs. The reason I can not do five stars is, getting your food took alot longer than should. I am giving them some grace for being new. My wife and friends ordered the ribs and came to the table cold. Beautiful interior! I ordered the vegetable soup and primavera pasta. The primavera was delicious and flavorful! Had just the right amount of everything and a unique sauce. The vegetable soup was also flavorful but the soup to vegetables ratio was a bit off for me. It didn't have enough soup and too many vegetables. The day had finally come for me to try the coop. As we entered on a cool crisp Saturday night, I wondered what I'd expect as I entered the bar. I entered and to my surprise I had to wait for my drink. I accepted the harsh reality that a wait is now a part for any bar at Virginia Tech. I ordered my 3 tequila shots and oh boy as the tingling sensation ran through my body, I realized, no lime! I frantically panicked to get the bartenders attention but sadly no avail. This is such a solid place to eat. My husband and I started coming here awhile back after a bad experience somewhere else and really appreciated the consistently excellent food, reasonable prices along with large portions, and good service. With young children it's hard to justify the effort of going out to eat if things are off. We now go almost every week as a treat because we always have a good experience! We go early before any crowd, get a booth in the back and just hang out and enjoy. Everything on the menu has surpassed what we expected. For instance I got a quesadilla last time, no high expectations...I mean it's just a quesadilla, but it was amazing! We either get a flatbread pizza or chicken tenders for the kid, both of which are delicious and we always have leftovers. They have higher end dishes too. The menu has lots of variety and we haven't been disappointed yet after many visits. read more

Was ready for dinner after watching a hip hop showcase at Moss. It's Saturday night. Was hoping to just find a restaurant that wasn't crowded so we could eat quickly. Came upon this cool looking place (rustic industrial) and liked the menu. We had the mushroom flat bread and bbq platter. All delicious! Our waitress was prompt and friendly. Definitely more mature than the typical college bar. Might be a little pricey for the college kids, but a great place when family is visiting and paying! read more

The only restaurant in Blacksburg with a real chef and made from scratch food. Sauces, dressing, and everything is homemade. The atmosphere is industrial chic. Definitely a step above the Blacksburg college bars and the food doesn't even compare to what Blacksburg has to offer. Chef Cunninghame West is knocking it our if the part with The Coop! read more

My family invited me to this restaurant for my birthday. The atmosphere was nice and the waitress was ok. But the food was not at all what I expected. I ordered the pasta platter with creamy steak and mushroom. It took at least one hour to get our order and it was not even busy in the restaurant. It was way way too salty. My husband ordered the pasta also but it was the shrimp asparagus. It was also salty beyond belief! My youngest son had the flatbread steak and onion which he loved and was good. My eldest son had the fish and chips that he also liked and said was good. In the end we ate our dishes and reluctant to return them because of how long it took to get our orders in the first place. But we did complain to the waitress and all she could offer us is more water to wash down the salt! She also stated that she was getting much more complaints about the saltiness of the food and she would pass on the information to the cooks. Not happy and will not return to the restaurant considering it was not an inexpensive meal! read more

This is the only complaint I have ever posted online about a business. We have been previous customers of The Coop, but will never be returning. My family decided to eat there after attending the annual Steppin' Out in downtown Blacksburg. Before our food was served, one of the guys from the kitchen came out into the restaurant to verbally berate his girlfriend/wife who was standing there with her two children asking for the car keys. He screamed at her, cussed her out, yelled about what her mother had said about him...all in front of our 9 year old son and everyone else in the restaurant. My husband walked up to the bar and asked to speak to someone in charge. A bald-headed man from the kitchen yelled that he would be out in a minute. He never introduced himself or his position...we assume he was the manager? When he finally emerged, my husband briefly explained the situation to him. Keep in mind, it's an open kitchen so the entire time that my husband is complaining the guy he is complaining about is listening and staring him down from the kitchen. The manager (?) did not care and completely blew my husband off...no apology, no compensation offered. We explained to the waitress what happened and she mentioned that the "guys in the kitchen are rough", as well as a high turnover rate. I imagine there is an extremely high turnover rate as the manager obviously has no control of his staff and doesn't seem to care either way. She apologized which was more than we got from the manager (?). We explained that we knew it wasn't her fault, of course...her service was fine. We decided to leave after barely touching our food, the environment didn't really feel comfortable at this point and we lost our appetite. As I walked out, a sarcastic male voice taunted me from the kitchen "Bye, baby girl!". I was the only female leaving the restaurant and knew it was directed at me as the kitchen staff knew my husband had complained...decided to get out of there as fast as I could as I had our 9 year old son with me. It really made us think about the people that prepare your food. Let's just say, we don't ever want any food prepared by this kitchen staff. The entire experience was disgusting, we'll never go back...plenty of other places in Blacksburg with great food and service. read more

Would NOT recommend. We walked in and were seated right away however upon ordering, were denied alcoholic beverages. While my ID is from out of state and I understand a policy to have a higher up check, our waitress informed us that we would also need to show another photo form of ID with our birthday on it. I don't carry my passport with me (and just about no one ever does) so I didn't have another ID that was acceptable to them and was denied. We ordered our food and while we were waiting heard a kitchen staff come out of the kitchen and begin yelling and cussing at what appeared to be a friend of most of the restaurant staff who was dining/hanging around the restaurant. When another customer brought this incident to the attention of the manager, the manager went back and informed the kitchen staff they had been complained about and they both laughed it off. We waited some more for our food and even just refills of water while one waitress stood behind the bar and texted, ate a burrito, and wiped herself all over clean of sweat with a napkin she then left on the bar in front of customers. The manager and waitstaff laughed off all complaints and continued with their behavior. They made fun of customers specific orders very loudly so that we could hear. Our service was a 0/10 and the food was only okay. read more

Came here for a date night and sat at the bar. There were 4 bartenders and 8 customers at the bar. The bartender couldn't tell me the brands of scotch they had. I figured it out for myself. We ordered dinner and it arrived promptly. Both of our drinks were empty; however, we were not asked if we wanted refills. The bartenders held a conversation directly in front of us yet never offered refills nor a glass of water. Never asked if our dinner was ok. Stood in front of us and never asked if we would like something else, a drink..anything. Service so pathetically poor it was comical. Finally, we asked for the check and it was tossed (yes, tossed) in front of us without even a "thanks for coming in" or any type of acknowledgement. I've lived in Blacksburg for a long time and I know that sometimes service is lacking - it's the nature of the employment pool in a college town...but this was by far the worst service I have ever experienced here. We went there Friday night home coming weekend. Had a good bar experience last year decided to try dinner. Wouldn't take reservations. Party of 6, went out early to avoid the rush. We arrived at 6 and we were seated almost immediately, so it started off good. Placed drink order and the order came back wrong. Placed an app order then our dinner order. Place was filling up and our App order came out a little slow but we were enjoying the company but we were ready for our food. Saw other tables getting theirs but we still hadn't been served. Waiter finally came by and apologized said our food was coming. We ordered another round but we were getting hungry. We waited an hour after we ordered asked for the manager, said he was the Chef and couldn't come out. Waiter now came back and said they lost our order but would be making it now. No attempt to make things right, after 15 more minutes we finally saw others getting served and our ticket left on order rack, now an hour and a half had past since our order and we had waisted 2 hours in this place so we decided to leave. Said we would pay for what we had received then everything went crazy. Our waiter said they weren't used to a big crowd, the bartender who I guess was the asst manager finally came she didn't care about us, heard her say it was the waiters fault then came back and said we were next, what did that mean anyway? Our party had left already and we were so mad and hungry. Since it was now 8pm on Friday night before homecoming no place to go and eat. Ruined our night and they didn't even care. AVOID AT ALL COST! We did get a great meal at the Hilton Garden Inn. read more
