Dining like it's the 70's. And that's a good foodie thing. The interior is perfect for the vibe of having a good meal and cup of coffee. Very diverse menu that doesn't disappoint. The kitchen is in plain sight. Full griddles and stove... and I'm surprised they can do all that they do! We our from out of state, but when we are here we ALWAYS get breakfast at the Copper Penny...at least twice. Waitresses take care of EVERY customer. Food is great, whether you order breakfast or lunch. Can't beat the price....$5.50 Belgian waffle? Come here and go often. read more

WOW the food was plentiful and delicious! We didn't have enough room on the table for everything. We were in town for 2 days and needed a hearty breakfast and found the SCS restaurant looked so much less expensive online than Grosse Pointe where we were staying. Tried for first time breakfast on a Tuesday morning. Not a large restaurant. Lots of diners around 10am. I ordered 2 eggs over easy, Sausage patties, well done hash browns and rye toast. I'm not sure if they made a mistake, but I got 3 eggs, cooked as requested, as were the well do e hash browns. Pleasant surprise that there were 2 nice size sausage patties. My only complaint was the rye toast was drenched in butter. I was really surprised at the bill. Not sure if I got a morning g or senior discount, but it was a few dollars less than menu price. Tasty breakfast at this place I can't believe I've driven past a million times and have never tried. Endless hot coffee...a varied menu for breakfast...I was there for breakfast. The no -breakfast menu looks great as well. A nice portioned mushroom and Swiss and a veggie omelette both with hash browns. You could get pancakes instead of hash brown if you like. The moment we walked in there was a pleasant smell of food cooking and the dining room was filled with people that seemed comfortable and regular. The atmosphere was casual, the prices were great, and the food was good. Everything was perfectly cooked. The coffee was hot and constantly refilled. Our server was so nice and easygoing while making sure we were taken care of every minute. We didn't have to ask for a thing. Before leaving I asked what the name of our server was and was told Penny. I said, The Copper Penny herself?!" And the answer was yes. I have to say Penny was excellent but the other servers on staff today were just as nice answering questions and bringing coffee around to everyone, not just their stations. We will be back. Food was tasty, but I'm overall not thrilled with my experience here and probably won't be back anytime soon. First thing that felt off, the kitchen is open in the dining room, and there was a chef cooking without a mask. On the menu, it states burgers come with Cole slaw and you can make it deluxe and add fries. My husband didn't want to, just wanted Cole slaw - but this seemed to confuse the waitress. When she asked "Do you want to add fries," he said no, just Cole slaw... but then was charged to add Cole slaw on the side? When we tried to clarify with the waitress, she seemed confused herself and said that he had to add Cole slaw. Finally, the chef forgot to put my order on the grill with my family's, so I got mine ~10 minutes later than everyone else. Overall, despite the food being okay, these things made me question if I would dine in here again. read more

Cooked golden brown and cut thick. I honestly would return just for that. Portion size perfect. Need a tangy sauce to with them. Soup was ok (French onion). I've been visiting the Cooper Penny for nearly 15 years now. When I'm in the Shores or passing through and need a hot, home cooked meal this is my stop. I've had everything from breakfast and lunch to pretty much a sampling of most of the dinners. The omelettes are packed full, cooked perfectly and served with either hash browns OR pancakes- no up charged, and toast of your choice. The soups are all homemade and their ranch is to die for! So good, that when I was pregnant with my 2nd, I used to get it by the pint and pour it on everything by!! Get their ranch! The sandwiches a stacked high and their fries are always made to order and servers so hot to have to wait a minute for them to cool to enjoy. My personal favorites are the hot turkey sandwich, taco salad in the fresh made crispy tortilla shell bowl, and the hand cut/batter dipped chicken tenders. Yes they hand cut fresh chicken breast into strips and then hand dip them in house batter and fry them fresh to order. They are delicious and a very generous portion of 5, complete with choice of potato and 1 additional side. The place is PACKED on the weekends, and there will be a wait,, but the food is so worth it! Come during the week and you're guaranteed to get a table right away. The waitstaff is good. They are like your best friends mother- they will treat you well. The kitchen can get backed up with all the patrons dining in, but again the food is worth the wait. It's cozy restaurant, with really good food at a good price. When we walked into the restaurant this morning the server at the register looked annoyed. I ordered eggs Benedict with no meat and a soup. The soup took forever to get to the table and we had no silverware. The eggs Benedict had meat on it. Instead of remaking the meal the cook took the meat off with most of the hollandaise sauce. This is how they served it to me. I sent it back and said I didn't want it. Instead of asking me if I wanted something else she tossed the food out and didn't make mention of this to the cook. I asked to talk to the manager. All the manager had to say was sorry and I hope this doesn't discourage you from coming back. I refused to pay and told her that the food was always good here but she needs to do something about the service. The waitress was rude and never smiled or acknowledged a thank you. The table behind us had to ask for a coffee refill. I gave two stars because the cabbage soup was awesome. It's too bad I didn't take the order to go that I placed so that my mom could try it. Huge menu, great food, coffee is delicious. I'm not too impressed with the waitstaff. There always seems to be a huge wait to get something I request. (more coffee, extra napkins, etc.) We just moved to the area and this place was a #1 request for restaurants to try by several people. We've been her 4 times in 2 months! Yum! Well unfortunately, I have to change my review. We will never be coming back. Unfortunately, we've had 2 bad experiences in the last few weeks. Waitstaff was terrible! We waited over 45 minutes for our food! We sat at our table for 1.5 hours! It's like she left and never came back. We sat for 15 minutes with empty glasses. And the food was just mediocre. I left for work early enough to grab a quick bite to eat, so I decided to check out The Copper Penny. It is a tiny, non-descript place on Harper and with very limited breakfast options in the area, really the only choice for me considering the time constraint. I quickly took a seat at the bar that holds about four chairs. The patrons all seemed like they knew each other, in fact I felt like I had walked into someone's retirement party at VFW hall. Everyone was very nice though and the neighborhood aspect of the place was a plus. I ordered a ham and cheese omelet, hash browns well done and some wheat toast. I hate to say it, but the whole thing was underwhelming. The has browns weren't crispy, the cheese, which was stacked American slices wasn't melted when I cut into the omelet and there just wasn't anything about the dish that stood out. I am always disappointed when I go to a place and feel like I can make something much better at home. I admit to being a bit of a breakfast snob and this just doesn't do it for me. To Recap: The Good: Friendly locals, modest prices, plenty of parking. The Bad: I don't want to say bad, just nothing that stands out. We went here on memorial day cuz every place else was closed, and you're nuts if you think I'm going to Palmers again!!! I got 2 eggs, bacon and pancakes (cuz I didn't see the bog breakfast till after) Well the eggs were good. They gave me an interesting wheat toast that was barely toasted, and 3 small pancakes. Oh I got a tiny plastic cup of syrup which I believe was sugar free. Nothing really stood out... Went here the other day for breakfast. Small but very cozy restaurant. The ambiance and decor was good but I am not here for that. It is, after all, 8 on a Sunday morning so I am starvin' Marvin! No breakfast special on weekends. Booooooo. Big downer. A friend and I ordered. Mine was biscuits with sausage gravy and scrambled egss, his was toast, hashbrowns, eggs and susage links. Though the biscuits were soft and moist, the gravy leaves much to be desired. It was, at best average. Scrambled eggs were good BUT, if a restaurant can NOT scramble eggs properly, it is NOT worth visiting again right? My friend thought the hasbrowns were "clumpy." And for him NOT to finish his hasbrowns ANY time of the day, IT IS saying something. The breakfast sausages were HUGE! In size that is, NOT in taste. The experience was disappointing overall especiallly since my friend recommended it (though we were looking for the Crock Pot) but I must honestly say I think I would rather have my McMuffin next time around. read more

The menu is enormous so there's something for everyone and it has a good family atmosphere about it. Ok. Mixed. Food was good and wait staff very good. Had a breakdown and we left the car in thier parking lot. We had called and told them of the issue and a wrecker was coming. We got there and order a meal and when the wrecker came the owner or manager ran out and was yelling at the driver. The driver was nice and polite and kept working. When the car was loaded and we had to sign the Paperwork and confirm where it was going he ran out dropped the F bomb to get out. Crazy. Took about 9 minutes. We typically order breakfast every Saturday morning at work. Our last order had several mistakes some which ended in ppl throwing out their food due to missing items. We called and spoke to the owner who apologized and stated she would bring gift cards to us so we could order again and have things made correctly. The owner never came to bring the cards. A week later on Saturday we placed our order asking if we may speak with the owner Penny to inquire as to why she never brought the gift cards. Penny apologized and stated she would take $10 off of our total. Im a little baffled to say the least. We have three people who had food that was messed up and not edible. We spend money every week at this establishment in the hopes to have the correct food and good customer service. $10 was more of an insult. The food we picked up today was subpar at best . One of the omelettes was not cooked all the way and had runny egg dripping from it. Again we threw out food ! We will take our business elsewhere moving forward. read more

This is a tough one...it would really be a two and a half stars if that were a thing. We ended up here for breakfast after driving past the place we had intended to go because it was closed. We were determined to try something different today. I hadn't read any reviews since we weren't heading here and hubs failed to mention how hot it was in here (as mentioned in previous reviews) until we had already sat down. Side note...the dining room to the left when you enter is significantly cooler which I wish I would have known prior to leaving. I attribute this to the fact that the kitchen opens up onto the rather narrow dining room to the right. And on a 90 plus degree day I'm not sure how you could possibly cool it any better even if the AC is in top working order (which it very well may be, I could feel it running.) Enough about that...not a deal breaker. The wait staff were very attentive, friendly and efficient. Definitely no complaints there. I can't even say the food was bad...it was just very unspectacular. I was full when I was done but didn't feel satisfied. I had southern fried steak and eggs which came with biscuits, hash browns and sausage (?) gravy. Nothing about it stood out. Nothing was wrong with it, nothing was RIGHT with it. At least one thing (ideally more if not all of my meal) should stand out and say "this is what we really do well" but nothing here did. And the interior itself had the same feel to it. It just needed some love and some sprucing up. So...unfortunately I don't think I'll be returning here to update this review. It's been awhile since I have written a review on here, so I hate that this is an almost bad review. The Copper Penny: When we found the Copper Penny, I was delighted. The service was excellent, the food good and they gave an abundance. It was a nice place to dine and we have on many occasions. However, our last 2 trips were less than...well, let me say they were not good. The time before last, just last week I ordered breakfast: 2 Eggs, Bacon,Hashbrowns, biscuits with a side of Sausage Gravy. ( Their Sausage Gravy is Awesome ). They never gave me the Bacon but the waitress said she gave me a 10% discount, although still charging me for the Bacon. It almost equated...except that I Really wanted the Bacon when I ordered it, but mistakes happen, I get that. But the HUGE failure came in the way that I never saw coming. I LOVE Corned Beef Hash. I ordered 2 eggs with Corned Beef Hash. I got the 2 eggs but barely any CBH.( The 2 eggs actually covered up and hid the Corned Beef Hash; at first I didn't even know it was there.) I asked the waitress if I needed to pay extra to get an equitable amount of CBH; she said yes, it would cost me another $3.00...YIKES!! I said: "that is nuts, I'm not paying 3 more dollars for another small portion". I asked for the manager. She left and came back and said the cook was making me some more, complementary. There was no mention of an additional charge and the manager or owner couldn't be bothered. When I got the bill it said $12.43 and there was no extra charge for the extra CBH, which should have been the fair amount, volumetrically speaking.....anyway; When I went to the counter to pay, the waitress who waited on me, ran the total and said " That'll be $15.60." I said: " How is that when the bill you GAVE me said 12.43?" She acted mystified. It appears that she or someone had made another bill that said 15.60 and had a charge for the extra Corned Beef Hash that I was told wouldn't be charged to me. I mean, who writes up 2 different bills for the same order? Let me make clear that: This is no accusation. It could have simply been a error and another bill could have accidentally been typed out that was charged to me for my exact order with extra CBH...I'm sure it has happened somewhere at some time before, somewhere in this country or perhaps even in the world. Hey, people are imperfect. Bottom line: The Copper Penny has great potential and was a great place to eat breakfast previous to this last experience. Just felt a little blind sided. read more

I usually don't write reviews, but this needs special attention. Went in the restaurant for dinner, while waiting on our food, partially facing the kitchen, I noticed a waitress scrapping food off of a customers plate, prior to delivering it to them. I sat and watched as "Phyllis" continued to do this with different customers plates. She would then take the plate to the customer, and take what she scrapped off to a small bar like table adjacent from the kitchen, leave it , and return to take bites from it periodically. I felt this is very unprofessional, and stealing from the customer. read more
