I'm currently writing this from Korner Kafe. As a disclosure I'll admit I'm posting this review due to them offering a free ice cream for a review. I arrived to the place nearly packed. Though I was seated quickly. I ordered an appetizer instead of a meal (cheese sticks) The sticks arrived quickly and this was the first time in a while i had an establishment cook food thoroughly enough that I had to wait a bit before eating them. The sticks were good tasting and in good quality. Ambiance wise there is music but it isn't obscene or obscenely loud unlike other eaterys. It also comes with your choice of biscuit or roll. I chose the biscuit. Hot and homemade too. We alsoo tried the coconut pie and chocolate pie...Yummy!! Like this breakfast/lunch place. It has a local ma and pa feel to it. Chicken fried steak 10.5$ was perfect size for breakfast. Tender and not too heavy. Home fries were OK. Wife had Philly cheese steak omlete 10.5$ it should be named Philly brisket omlete because the meat is not steak. Food was warm but not piping hot however or order dis come out fast. If you like heinz ketchup then bring your own. I think that's why I was not impressed with the home fries. Wish I got tomatoes or grits instead. Staff is super friendly. It's sad when you can get your subway sandwich faster than you got seated at The Corner Cafe. They were very short-handed. I waited about 10 mins to be seated and then luckily was able to get my drink at the same time, but after about 20 minutes, I noticed the two tables seated after me getting to place the orders. You have one person waiting on the tables, being cashier and hostess. Terrible teamwork. Zero efficiency dealing with lunch rushes. Maybe the other ladies could help more. Thoroughly unimpressed with the entire restaurant. Basic café menu and the most basic decor. Server was friendly and tried to be as accommodating as possible at first. However, the cooks completely ignored everything she wrote down. Nothing we ordered came out the way we ordered it. If we asked for something to be left off, they put it on there anyway and if we asked for something to be added we found it on someone else's plate. Wouldn't have been such a big deal if we hadn't all gotten omelets! We just switched plates around. Either way we are still paying for the meal and deserve to get what we asked for. The waitress did notice this but didn't bother to ask if we'd like anything remade. The food itself was pretty bland. Nothing crazy spectacular. Big portions for cheap is about all they have going on in that department. They don't have hash browns, only home fries and the "fresh" salsa tasted days old. Also, there was a strange older man that seemed to double as host and bus boy who was so bored that he just kind of sat at the waiting booth and observed everyone in the restaurant having breakfast. The staff are super friendly - the waitresses came over on separate occasions to compliment my friend and I on our kids and chat about their kids. It's a small town diner feel and we felt very welcome here. I got the Corner Burger (their signature burger). I don't remember everything on it, but there were jalapenos and grilled mushrooms. It was delicious! The flavors worked really well together and I was extremely pleased. The "side salad" was just iceburg lettuce with some [flavorful] croutons. A bit lacking, but I guess that's what I get when I order a salad with a burger. Next time I'll try another side. The decor wasn't great, but who goes to a cafe to stare at the walls? In the three years that I've lived near this location, there have been three failed restaurants. I tried them all. I can say, with authority, I really hope The Corner Cafe succeeds!! It is far and away the best food that I've had in this little strip mall location. I had the meatloaf (juicy and flavorful) with broccoli cheese casserole (large, crisp broccoli prove this stuff is really "home made"), and loaded mashed potatoes (thick with cheese, bacon, and chives: AMAZING). I finished the meal with a gigantic piece of chocolate cake (sinfully moist and rich). [Edit: The staff and atmosphere are much improved. 5th star added. 1/2014] The only down side (costing it that 5th star) was the loud Spanish conversations coming from the kitchen area (louder than the dinner conversation at my own table) and the fact that I'm not sure my waitress knew enough English to really understand my questions about the menu. She had to get another staff member (who also had a thick accent) to describe the loaded mashed potatoes to me. The food is amazing, but the atmosphere is ruined when I can't speak the same language as the staff. read more

Went for lunch today and I was very impressed with this place. The food was great. I didn't feel like eating something super fattening so I had a club sandwich. That sucker was huge and the bacon was super crispy. I had chips (which I regret, because those onion rings were mouth watering), because again I wanted to stay on the "healthier" side..LOL. My friend had a chicken fried steak and I tried a bit of it and it was YUM. I ended having a cinnamon roll to-go and again that sucker was huge and very light and buttery (only $3.99). Corner Cafe is just a little hole in the wall at the corner of Mid Cities and Davis in NRH. They are not the least bit fancy, but the food is good and inexpensive. It is a great place for breakfast and a cup of diner coffee. Other than Sunday's after church, there is never a wait for a table. Just before the holidays, I noticed that Corner Cafe offered full cakes for sale. The ones in the case looked delicious, and I would have ordered a couple if I has needed cakes or pies. Some of the worst food I've had in a long time. Breakfast sausage dry, old, tough to chew. Potatoes were Tiny squares so perfect,, they had to be frozen, were greasy old, probably been under a heat lamp all morning. Scrambled eggs so overcooked they had a crust, were flat like an omlett. We had lunch here today, both had one of the daily specials, the baked Chicken and dressing. just each had different vegetables. Service was great, attentive and food came quickly. the food not so great, I think the fact the food came out very quickly means it was prepared ahead of time, way ahead of time! Both of us had dark meat chicken and it was very dry, dark meat chicken is not supposed to be dry? Indicator of having been cooked way to long ago or cooked way to long, dressing had way too much sage(according to my wife) and had flavor we did not like. My wife had corn and green beans which she said were good. I had turnip greens and pinto beans. Pinto beans were good, turnip greens not so much? Another un-identifiable flavor I did not like?
