I saw this place while in portage for the CP holiday train of 2015 as I drove around looking for the perfect spot for a video. After finding my spot I had about 20 minutes to kill so I stopped in for a drink. There was about 12 craft beers on tap and the one I chose first puked out so I chose some beer with cave in the name which was ok. It's located in a cool old school coroner building in what looks like the down town area. When I walked in the place the place looked fresh with colorful walls with a nice balance of light and dark wood. The place seemed like it had a room with sections from the small bar to the cozy fire place area and the great room with the sectioned off semi open room. There was flat screens that could be seen from any seating area playing sports. While I was only there for a drink I noticed the food was the star because everyone was having burgers and wings. The burgers on the table next to me looked pretty good. While I was only there for a drink the staff came over at least four times to see if I needed anything or a menu so the service was great. I hate when I'm at what be a good place for food for a drink before going somewhere else for food and I can't comment on there food. Overall the place was great with all spans of ages from young to older people hanging out on a Saturday for lunch. I would definitely go back when I'm in the area and hang out. read more

This was our second visit- we passed many other restaurants on our way up north including a 5 star joint in Fox Lake that was booked solid. It was worth the wait for sure! Food and service was outstanding just like our first visit. We had Bloody Mary's which were delicious, condiments and beer chaser were super generous portions. Very cute little bar. Service was so so, it seemed as if they had one waiter working the entire floor so it was kinda slow but he was putting all he could into it and did it with a smile and some jokes. The food was pretty standard bar food, a little too greasy but it is a bar. I had the marmalade burger and was actually impressed by the combination of the marmalade and the chipotle mayo, it was surprisingly still a bit spicy, but the perfect level of spice. I had a late lunch at "The Corner Pocket" today. I remember when this building was a drug store during the years I was growing up, so it was nice to see it refurbished and converted for modern use. It's a nice neighborhood-type bar/restaurant. Open and airy, with a pleasant color scheme & woods, and a comfortable feeling. There's even limited outdoor seating. From where I was sitting I counted 11 wall-mounted TV's. I sampled several items from the menu, (which had a good variety). For an appetizer I chose the pork quesadillas. The pork had a slight smoky flavor that I liked. For a salad I chose the Fiesta Taco (I asked for the jalapeños to be held because I don't like HOT). The lettuce and ingredients were fresh and tasty. Lastly I tried the Frisco Burger. The Black Angus meat was done just how I requested, and the flavor of the meat and sandwich as-a-whole was great. The accompanying french fries were tasty (often times places will buy the cheapest fries they can, and the taste reflects it, but NOT these). The portions were good sized, the prices were fair, and the service was excellent. All in all, a good dining experience. read more

My husband and I were visiting Portage for a day and decided to stop into The Corner Pocket for a quick snack. We couldn't decide between wings and cheese curds, so we opted for the choose three appetizer and got curds + two orders of hot buffalo wings! We also each got a pint of Oktoberfest beer. The hot buffalo is HOT HOT HOT! It was so delicious and we loved the spice, but be warned... You may regret choosing this if spicy isn't your thing! My face was so hot and my mouth was burning for our drive back home! The ranch and blue cheese helped to curb the spice, as did the celery. We even asked for extra celery because we were dying! Executive summary: good comfort/pub food, comfortable small town pub feel, friendly staff. Our group stopped here after snow tubing at Cascade. We needed to warm up and fill our bellies! We snagged a spot with log cabin style rocking chairs and benches right near their flameless fireplace stove thingy--you know what I mean, right? A Packers playoff game was in progress and the bar was offering free shots every time points went on the board. My group didn't partake as most of us had a drive back to Madison ahead of us but it's the thought that counts. Our server was super friendly and helpful. She even let me get two sauces for my wings because I couldn't decide between a couple of them. The cheese curds were tasty, not the best I've ever had but far from the worst. Everyone in the group enjoyed their meals which ranged from the chicken sandwich, to a burger, to cubano panini. Prices were very reasonable too. Ordered the jumbo Wings, which probably were jumbo before they were left in the fryer way to long. The garlic Parmesan sauce was also a huge disappointment, just big gobs of cheese with a little garlic mixed in. The cheese curds were decent. The spinach dip was flavorless and the cheese on top was burnt. The manager did offer to make new wings for my wife but we already had waited 10 minutes before someone waited on us and another hour before our overcooked food came out. No thanks!! Not a lot in Portage. This was just about the only thing open today and thank gosh it was. We got lunch here- I had the smoked pork sandwich. The BBQ was EXCELLENT, loved the sauce. We paid and left and it was so hot that afternoon we need to get out of the heat. We ordered a malt, but they were out of ice cream, it seemed. We moved from Madison to Portage about two months ago. Our Saturday morning tradition was a make your own Bloody Mary Bar in Monona and I was super sad to be moving so far away. I was so happily surprised to walk into the corner pocket on a Saturday morning and discover their build your own bloody Mary bar! They even have better Fixin's than our previous regular spot. I want to be as optimistic as possible because being that I was in a smaller town I didn't have high expectations to begin with. The gentleman that served us was very nice but kept calling us kids which was odd to me; however,he was very friendly and kind. The mango tea was good but there must have been a lot of ginger in it because it tasted spicey! I order the Tucson chicken panini which was appeared to be pressed in a panini press that was too small. In addition, there was lettuce on the panini, warm lettuce, ew. It's hard to mess up a sandwich with meat and melted cheese but seriously, lettuce! The sweet potato fries were delicious and seasoned perfectly. With all that being said they are doing pretty well, there menu could use some improvements and the outside of the building could really use a better sign. We stopped by The Corner Pocket last week around 3 PM and sat at a high boy table by the bar. None of the employees were wearing masks. I ordered a strawberry margarita; it came to me barely a light pink color and almost no flavor. When I asked the bartender/waitress to add to it, it wasn't much better. My friend ordered deep fried pickles; the breading was over cooked and falling off. The sweet potato fries were skinny and also over cooked. I noticed that there were two men sitting by us drinking pints of tap beer. I later realized the men were the owner and an employee. As a local who's only eaten here at lunch time, I really like it. (Not a 5-star? I'm a tough grader.) The sandwiches, burgers, wraps, etc are all excellent. I like the fries (regular and sweet potato) and they have a popcorn maker in one corner - nice for snackin' while you wait for the food. When they get busy, the service can be a bit slow, but if you're in a huge rush, go to Mickey D's and get a gut-bomb. Otherwise, relax and some good food will be on the way.
