    Cauliflower crunch
    Serena H.

First time visiting, and I'm so sad this place is in Toronto and far away from where I usually am! We came in for Monday lunch and they weren't too busy, we were seated right away. The server was very friendly, attentive, and served us an amuse bouche on the house. I don't remember exactly what it was but it had beetroot and the flavours were vibrant but balanced and it definitely raised my expectations for the rest of the dishes. Cauliflower crunch: slightly crisp exterior, very tender inside. A bit spicy but overall loved the flavour and texture. Butter chicken: best butter chicken I've had, tender chicken and herbaceous sauce Garlic naan: best naan I've had, really soft and pillowy but still had nice crackly bits Lamb biryani: server explained to us that their oven wasn't working so there would be no bread covering the rice, which was a bit unfortunate but nevertheless the dish tasted great.

Vegetable Pakora w Tomato Sauce (complimentary amuse bouche)

Ordered: Vegetable Pakora w Tomato Sauce (complimentary amuse bouche) Basil Garlic Paneer Tikka (~$21 CAD): with grape & onion caramelized chutney Gunpowder Prawns (~$30 CAD): with South Indian spices & dill chutney Pistachio Lamb Chop Korma (~$34 CAD): NZ lamb chop in special house sauce Chicken Mango Moilee (~$25 CAD): with fresh mango, coconut milk, mustard seeds Lamb Biryani (CAD ~$26 CAD) Mango Passion Sparkle (~$16 CAD; complimentary) Aya's take: If you're looking for traditional Indian cooking that fueled by passion and creativity, The Cottage Cheese is just the restaurant for you! They are on Michelin's Bib Gourmand list and I wanted to see if it was truly worth a try - I'm glad to say it was. The chefs here are not reinventing any dish but sharing their take on what rich Indian flavors look like. It's certainly more elevated and tactful. We started off with a complimentary amuse bouche of Vegetable Pakora w Tomato Sauce. It was crisp, golden, and tangy from the tomato sauce. The Basil Garlic Paneer Tikka and Gunpowder Prawns were both good but wasn't the bite that made me want to go back for more. They both were well-seasoned but lacked that satisfying factor. The Lamb Biryani was another one that was beautifully presented, cooked well, but something was off. There was way too much cumin that it was distracting from the other flavors. The lamb chunks were tender and the quantity could be better but honestly, my main issue was the level of cumin. My 2 favorites of the meal were the Pistachio Lamb Chop Korma and Chicken Mango Moilee. Wow!! These are a must! The lamb chop was unbelievably juicy, meaty, and tender. That special house sauce it was in was delectable. It was bursting with flavor, earthy, and rich. I could put that on everything. The Chicken Mango Moilee was a new try for me! I never see this offered on the menu and despite my hesitancy that it would be too sweet, I'm glad to say I was wrong. It has light sweetness but the sauce is delicately balanced and fragrant, the chicken was tender and juicy, and this came together so beautifully. They also have a robust cocktail & mocktail menu. I was able to try the Mango Passion Sparkle which was refreshing, tropical, and light. Our waitress, Janam, was super friendly, knowledgeable on the menu, and patient with all our questions. A great meal and worth a try if you're in Toronto!

Located in Kensington market, this small but mighty restaurant brings delicious flavours to the area! Their menu has a great selection of apps, mains and drinks/desserts. First off, we were presented with an amuse bouche (on the house) pakora with tamarind sauce. Great way to start a meal We then went on the recommendation of the server, and it did not disappoint: - charcoal chicken tikka. Cooked to perfection in a clay pot, it gives that delicate balance of smokiness and masala in each bite - coconut fish moilee. The coconut- lime gravy was a marvellous addition to the fish - not overpowering, so creamy, perfect to scoop up with the naan - cheese naan. Hot, fresh, cheesy. 'Nuff said - gotta always have rice and saffron rice didn't disappoint The above was enough for 2 people. The service was friendly, this is definitely a spot I'd go back to in order to try the other dishes!

Nestled in a Kensington corner, the restaurant is small but packs a powerful punch of ambiance and flavor. The interior is cute and cozy, the servers very hospitable. We got a full run down of the menu alongside many recommendations which made ordering a breeze. When the food arrived it was clear that pride was taken in everything that made it to the table. We start with an amuse bouche, as every table does, to really get you into the mood for flavor!! each dish was carefully crafted and soooo delicious, is there an easier way to describe it than we were licking our plates?? one of the best indian restos i have been to, the best in the city so far.

It's truly wonderful when a restaurant not only meets but exceeds high expectations. Given the Michelin recommendation and outstanding reviews, our hopes were high, and the experience delivered on every front. The food was nothing short of perfection. We absolutely savored the Sichuan Chicken Tikka, the Pistachio Lamb Korma, and the rich Dal Makhni, all beautifully complemented by the Cheese Naan. Despite having a late lunch, we devoured every bite, leaving no leftovers. This restaurant is a clear standout, and we are already looking forward to our next visit to explore the rest of the menu.

Hmm this one is one of the more perplexing spots. With rave reviews across the board I had higher expectations. The chicken Tikka app is good as expected a smaller portion maybe a main is needed. Butter chicken of boy or forgetful and has a sweet finish which is gaining momentum to appease a Western palate I guess. A not so nice trend imo. They are priced in the higher side for the main so the small portion also makes it a poor value. Roti and naan are serviceable. Not sure I will order again as better option for this price point.

    Inside. So nice.

I've been to Kensington Market many times and walked by this place. I really thought it was an emporium of cheese not an Indian restaurant. I never even looked inside...well what a lovely surprise! I decided to do something radical and actually eat lunch and enjoy my lunch hour instead of eating at my desk and well found this place on the winterlicious site and decided to give it a try especially since for a billion year( being dramatic) I thought it was a cheese place. The inside is beautiful. I loved the decor, it's cozy and warm and this place would be so nice to visit in the summer and watch the world go by outside. I was immediately greeted and shown a table. Service was impeccable and attentive. I ordered the cauliflower crunch, butter chicken with garlic naan and the tres leches rasmalai. While I waited they brought out a sample of the Cajun Jhuri Bhaja to try. It was delicious. The cauliflower crunch came out first. It was hot, and delicious although more spicy than I thought it would be. I would have preferred to have the sauce on the side because the crunch part became soggy. The overall taste was great. I probably wouldn't order again due to the spice. I'm getting older and spicy food gets to me, but I would risk suffering for a bite or two! The Butter Chicken and Garlic Naan came out next. Everything looked and smelled amazing. At first bite, I felt like the flavour was very subtle which I was sad about. I didn't eat much I was starting to get full and packed up the left overs. The Tres Leches Rasmalai intrigued me but it was just ok. I should have gotten the Gulab Jamun instead! Overall the food and service were great and I will be back to try some other dishes. I wanted to add the left overs were even better. I find that something you need Indian food to sit a little for the flavours to really pop! The butter chicken the next day was just yummy and the flavour was not subtle at all! Great find, great winterlicious lunch!

Along with a bunch of my friends, I visited this charming cafe-like restaurant on Christmas Eve, arriving around 9:15 pm just before the kitchen was set to close at 10 pm. Despite the late hour, the staff went above and beyond to accommodate us, taking all our food requests with a smile. They even took the time to guide us through portion sizes, dish flavours and recommended must-try items. To our delight, we were treated to a complimentary soup that turned out to be delicious. The food service was impressively quick, and every dish tasted heavenly. This place has easily secured its spot as the top Indian restaurant to try in Toronto. I highly recommend indulging in their Paneer Tikka Masala, Chicken Biryani, Garlic Naan, and Stuffed Paneer Kulcha.

Amazing food. Amazing service. Amazing vibe. Hands down it's a great place for Indian food. I was scared trying to find a good place that wouldn't make me sick. I would definitely come back again when I visit

What a perfect night! Located in Kensington market, the cottage cheese is the perfect addition to Toronto diverse food scene. Menu: So many classic and interesting food items to try. Also really appreciate the vegetarian and vegan options. Service: Amazing! Our server walked us through the menu and helped highlight so must tries. He also brought out complimentary apps which tastes amazing, just like everything else we had. Ambiance: So cute, super cozy, great for date night or friend/family gatherings. Food: Everything was so good. We had the okra, garlic naan, vegetable biryani, eggplant.

    Chicken chettinad and garlic naan

Your prices for mains/curries are atrocious. $24 for a chicken chettinad and this is the quantity I get?? The container is smaller than my hand. pathetic if I'm being honest. I can make a chettinad for cheaper and still make it taste good. $6.50 for 1 garlic naan? Just because it's Indian food, you guys shouldn't jack up prices like this. Please avoid this place. They're a rip off even if you can afford it.

I had an exceptional experience today! My waitress was so kind and engaging. The space is beautiful and clean with large bright windows. I ordered the lavender lemonade and it was light and refreshing. I also go the samosa chaat which was a delicious modern take on a classic. As much as I wanted the butter chicken, the waitress told me their saag is excellent and she was right. It was gorgeous and delicious. 10/10 recommend if you're in Kensington market!

Midway through the painfully slow setup process, the entire store started filling with the scent of something glorious. Rich spices, buttery warmth... it was the kind of smell that stops conversations. Everyone working there was Indian, and they were all clearly just trying to wrap up my account so they could dig into whatever just got delivered. I had to ask--where's that food from? "Kothur," they said, almost in unison. That was the recommendation, and it stuck with me. I walked by the place once. The exterior didn't scream "hidden gem." Thought about ordering delivery a few times but never followed through. Life, you know? Today, I finally went. From the outside, still nothing to write home about. But walk in, and it's a different story. Clean, cozy, and exactly the kind of no-fuss Indian spot you'd expect to stumble upon in the heart of a big city. The food? Solid. Spices landed right. Everything was warm, comforting, and satisfying. It's not trying to reinvent Indian cuisine--it's just doing it well. If you ever find yourself sniffing the air near a phone shop and wondering what that divine smell is--it might just be Kothur. TL;DR Not flashy. Surprisingly good. Smelled it before I tasted it. And the Chicken Tikka didn't taste like what Chicken Tikka usually tastes like. They both tasted like and amalgamation of every curry all mixed together. It was flavorful, but there was no distinct flavor. The Bhel Puri was yummy, but they served us wayyyy too much for only a party of 2. The garlic naan was fine. I also ordered the sweet lassi, which was tasty. The seating was fine and they had a coat rack which was nice. It's open late (till 11pm) which is convenient and why I might come here again, but otherwise the food did not stand out to me at all.

Unfortunately, lots of places in Toronto who make promises of serving biryani teleport you to hell. My friends and family are lifelong fans of biryani. Of all the places Biryaniwalla is highly recommended and I have usually had it at get-togethers. This time though I decided to visit the place and order a take out personally. Located a few meters away from Bathurst station , the restaurant stands amongst other Asian eataries. Upon entering, we were greeted warmly by Ankita at the reception. We asked her for recommendations and she patiently explained us the options and advised 2 biryanis based on our spice tolerance and preferences. Taking her advice, we ordered: - Chicken Kaju Ghee Roast Bucket with double Masala for $43 ($39.99 for Biryani and Double masala pay $2.99 extra). - Palnadu Chicken Biryani ( $18.99) Ambience wise, the place is pretty chill with neatly lined tables for family and the huge Biryaniwalla Logo adorning the big wall. There was also a spin the wheel game, which you can play if you place a google review. While we waited for our order, the shop was quite busy with mobile food delivery orders. After about 10 minutes, we got our order and took it home. Chicken Kaju Ghee Roast Bucket: This is possibly their bestselling biryani. And I have to confess, I have tried it before and I absolutely love it. It is a delicious biryani , with nice moist chicken pieces, cashews and which is not too overpowering with spices. We ordered double masala because my better half likes it that way. The quantity for bucket was huge and can easily satify 3-4 people. Chicken Palnadu Biryani: Compared to Kaju Ghee Roast, this one is more tangy and a bit on the spicier side. It is a slight Achari taste and it was surprisingly delicious. Also, you get Salan (spicy-tangy gravy) and Raita (yoghurt mixture) with the biryanis, and they go quite well with the biryani. However, i somehow still felt the biryanis lack that authentic taste of biryani that you get in India and Pakistan. Real authentic biryanis have the inherent smoky flavor which comes from coal which is used to cook biryani and to give Biryani the dum ( pots are sealed and cooked over slow heat with coal - at bottom and at top.) Also missed that Birista that usually accompany Biryani layers. That being said, these are quite good biryanis. To foodies: Possibly the best biryani restaurant is toronto, that gets it as close to the authentic taste. The biryanis are delicious and they have lot of other options including seafood biryani. The quantities are huge and you and your loved ones will truly enjoy To management: Great biryanis. Great service by Ankita. Would love if you guys can sprinkle some birista ( fried onions) at the top layer or provide it on the side. Also it would be great if you can provide some incentive for customers who order directly from store. I knew you once had 10%.off , which when I asked was told it's still on but you need the offer card. I was a bit let down by that because at the end, it's just a formality. Also spin the wheel if you place a google review is a cheap tactic to get reviews. Just do it as a fun activity guys. Creates goodwill. As a brand strategist , I always recommend customer experience over a few dollars Overall this is a great place for biryanis. I definitely recommend it.
