We waited 1:45 to be seated, which we agreed to. We waited another 15 minutes to be greeted by a server. Services was very slow. We were seated 35 minutes before we placed our orders. The water was very chlorinated. The tea was weak but sweet. The crab dip was mostly filler, not much crap with stale pita. The prices are outrageous and the market price for crab changed $20 per pound from check in to being seated. The food was overall not good. The crab legs were good, the slaw and applesauce was good, the firecracker shrimp they gave us as an apology were the best thing we had. The flounder, catfish, crab cakes and other sides were overcooked and bland. Our service continued to be super slow as we were only checked on 1 time the entire time we were eating. The server's attitude was very much an I don't care attitude. The manager came to talk to us about the bill after they asked us how we liked the food. The bill was $250 full price and they took off two of the meals bringing it down to $180. Very little was even edible for $180. This definitely seemed more like a tourist trap than a real restaurant.

I wanted to give this place a 4 or 5 because it's in a great location. The waitress was friendly and prompt and gave me honest suggestions when I asked for it. But the food was just ok, not amazing. And for the price, I was expecting something more. I realize these kinds of places do most of their sales off tourists in the summer but they are open all year and many locals want to eat out too from time to time. Our lunch was $89 dollars and that should have produced some amazing lunch but it was just ordinary, and I could have done better if I had made what I had at home. I had stuffed shrimp, and they were basically sharp like I would get at nay grocery store with some moist crab cake filling on top. It wasn't bad, in fact I liked it. It was just nothing special and should have been better for the cost. One plus and minus on the soda's. The fill your cup as expected with your soft drink of choice and put a little half sized pitcher of your soda on the table so you can fill your own glass. I like that. But, I ordered the Diet Pepsi because they don't have any ZERO drinks and used to have diet Dr Pepper but got rid of that. But it did not taste like a Pepsi, I think someone need to adjust the mix and clean out the pipes. It sort of tasted like several flavors were running through the same pipes.

If you are a hush puppy lover, this is your place! We waited about 20 min. For a table at 6pm on a Monday night, but the hush puppies appeared as soon as we were seated. This is a casual, local spot with a great variety of seafood. Tonight we went for the 1 1/2lb Dungeness Crab (MP was $50, reasonable) that came with 2 sides & the Pan crab & shrimp (pan butter sauté) also w/2sides. We opted for the she-crab soup as an alternative for 2nd side ($3 up charge) - soup was very good. Both dishes were delicious, hot & served quickly! Denise, our server, never let us have an empty glass, attentive & friendly. Great meal, great service. We will be back!

The Lunch Fried Shrimp with Coleslaw & French Fries

Heck yes I'd come back here again! My husband and I are visiting the area on vacation and, of course, I needed my fix of southern style fish, so I picked this place for lunch. We were seated right away(all inside seating with view of the bay) and given delicious hush puppies. We order half and half tea which was still sweeter than I'd like most of the time but good. They bring you a pitcher which is nice since things got busy and we didn't have to bother the waitress. We also ordered the crab balls as an appetizer. They were good, but were not needed as we got our plates at the same time and our plates were huge with more than enough food for us. I got the deviled crab to try something new. Reminded me of thanksgiving stuffing but seafoody. Loved it. The potato salad was really good, and so was the Cole slaw, but sooo sweet. It was like dessert for me. My husband got to fried shrimp and was by far the best we've ever had. The shrimp alone was a 10/10. I loved how thin the batter was and they were perfectly seasoned and cooked. You didn't need any sauce to dip them in and the minimal batter didn't leave your mouth coated in grease like most. I gave it a 4 because the menu didn't have descriptions so i had to ask what things were and the waitress didn't like seafood so it was hard to know what was a favorite or not. May be silly so some, but if you are particular or not from the area, there's several things you'd have no idea what they were, like deviled crab. The pricing was amazing though. My husband and I have ate this cheap in forever let alone on vacation. Hope you enjoy it too!

I have eaten many things in my life. Some remarkable, some regrettable--but few quite so memorably appalling as my experience at Resultant, Crab Shack. A name which, I suspect, was the result of an unfinished thought. Or perhaps it refers to the "resultant" agony of dining there. Upon entering--if one could call crossing the threshold into chaos "entering"--I was immediately greeted by a "Proud Deplorable" sticker affixed to the host stand. A curious choice for a business, to shout its disdain for civility from the moment one arrives. I momentarily considered turning on my heel and walking into the sea. The service was best described as a disappearing act. Our waitress appeared once, huffed something vaguely approximating human speech between puffs of her vape pen--a plastic wand scented of despair--and then vanished, presumably to go rehearse for her role in a community theater production of Customer Service: A Tragedy. To my horror, seafood--frozen, mind you--was being stored in what may have once been the lobby, though now functions more accurately as a waiting room for disappointment. As for the crab cake: mon dieu. It arrived nestled in a bun that bore the char of indifference, its interior texture not unlike a loofah soaked in mayonnaise. It was not so much eaten as it was endured. I consumed it only out of necessity, starvation having dulled my instincts for self-preservation. Photographic evidence would suggest the meal was a practical joke. I assure you, it was not. Needless to say, I shall not return. Not for all the crustaceans in the ocean. Zero stars. -- Anton Ego

A local told us about this place, which was further than we've been driving before. So we hadn't seen it. Due to our size party of 6, the weight was about 45 minutes. But we waited about thirty five minutes. We had a group of six and they brought us two baskets of delicious, hush puppies. The best I've had in the south. Whitney our waitress was super nice and when we asked for refills she brought little pitchers so we had plenty. The place is small and the tables are packed in but you don't feel like you are sitting on top of each other. The food was delicious and plentiful.

Senior grilled shrimp with potato and Cole slaw

Delicious meal with friendly and efficient service from Clara. It had the feel of being with family. We had a great table overlooking the sound. The hushpuppies were a delicious start. Even the iced tea tasted great. I had the senior grilled shrimp. I must have gotten 40 shrimp. I gave a 1/3 to my husband as I couldn't finish. The baked potato was salted nicely on the outside. The shrimp was grilled and sat in a little butter and spices. So delicious. The coleslaw was perfect t too. It was not too mayonnaisey. The key lime pie was a perfect sweet end. Delicious meal in a friendly, clean, cheerful restaurant.

Service was really good. The place has your average dock skack feel. The shrimp was over cooked and very hard to peel to eat. The seasoning was very mild and I was not given an option for hotter. I would probably go back but I'm going to try other places first.

This place is fantastic. it's location right in the water makes you enjoy the food and the view . The staff is super friendly and hospitable. True southern hospitality. The food there was DELICIOUS . The steamed platter was definitely memorable, satisfying and fulfilling. The fried shrimp was so good and crispy. The only thing is that the steamed platter was a little cold. But we'll definitely come back.

We were very disappointed in our experience at the Crab Shack yesterday, June 29, 2023 during lunchtime. We've been patrons of the restaurant the last week in June since 1985, visiting twice during our vacation week as well as other weeks during the year. Our family has grown and we were a party of 10 yesterday. When we arrived, we were told there would be a 20 minute wait. After that approximate time period, we received a text stating our table was ready. Our party was seated and completely ignored. A larger party beside us was seated after us, was served drinks, orders were taken and hush puppies served. We alerted a bus boy and two servers that we were forgotten after waiting 20 more minutes. Finally, being disgusted and disappointed, we started leaving. A waitress stopped me after half of our party had exited the front door and said they had forgotten to put our table on the board. By the time I got to the front desk, three hostesses/ cashiers were just standing around gaggling. They said our table was on the board. It must have just been put on the board a couple of minutes before we walked out. I don't think Vernon Guthrie would be happy with the poor service we received yesterday. I'm sorry to be so rude but this is not restaurant food. It tastes like elementary cafeteria food. I guess there are people who like bland boring stuff. I ordered a flounder and couldn't eat it. It had a million bones in it and waitress was pissed that I couldn't eat it. I wanted to scream and run out but we were nice, paid our bill and left. Every item tasted like it came out of a can. Guess this place does well since we're all tourists. Go to Gaffers restaurant, that's real food. Great quality, nice portions and it's beautiful inside. read more

I got 1 lb of Snow Crab and it was everything I was hoping for. They gave me everything I needed, including, the bucket, crackers, a small fork, crackers, lemon, and butter. They were constantly checking our table to refill our drinks. The service was absolutely incredible also, they made sure to crack jokes often. Their ambiance was very good. They all had a great mood and there was a boy in the kitchen who kept trying to make me laugh. Absolutely 100% recommend this place. read more

Called and placed an order for pick up for dinner tonight. The employee who answered the phone wasn't too kind while speaking and told me I couldn't pay for a side to one of the sandwiches because they were busy.. When I arrived to pick up the order I was told they were out of the clam chowder (I ordered a bowl and cup) so I gladly took the she crab soup instead. When I got home I was realized I was only given the bowl. The fried oyster sandwich, crab cakes, and fried shrimp all were less than satisfying. The fries were cold and unseasoned, and the coleslaw was also bad. The family all threw the food away after a few bites. Very disappointed. read more

Looking for some delicious, fresh seafood, inside an air-conditioned restaurant with a great view? This is the place for you! Very friendly service. They start you out with a generous shareable basket of sweet hush puppies. The service is friendly and helpful, especially patient with tourists like us who are trying to decide from a variety of great sounding options! I couldn't decided between the options for the grilled shrimp, so our server asked the kitchen and they graciously gave me a split between grilled and blackened. Although when we go back, I'll choose all of the blackened. Loaded with flavor! We emptied a basket of hush puppies and did good work on the second. Everyone enjoyed what they ate and packed up leftovers to enjoy later in the day. A must-stop when you are in Atlantic Beach! read more

My boyfriend and I stopped here for dinner while on vacation. The Crab Shack was tucked in the back from the main road. It didn't look like much, but they appeared very busy. We put our name in for a table, and the waiting area was outside overlooking the water. We get seated, and the waitress greets us with warm hush puppies. They were delicious!! She takes our order promptly. It arrives in a timely manner, and the food was great. The food is served on a sectioned plastic plate. It was laid back, and the beer was cheap. Tried the best catch platter. The trout was not fresh. The deviled crab was ok. There was a nice amount of shrimp. The number of oysters was good but they were soggy. The fries were lukewarm and the coleslaw was unremarkable. The best thing I ate was the hush puppies which were excellent and plentiful. If 60 or over there are special low-cost options. Nothing fancy here but is everything you should want if seafood is on your mind. It's a small family run restaurant that's been open longer than I've been alive so clearly they're doing something right. Location backs right up on the water so there are some sights to catch while you eat. The prices I'd have to say are the best. My wife got a streamed crab pot that we could've easily paid double somewhere else for that amount of food. Great job Crab Shack! read more

Vacationing here from Indiana and tried the Crab Shack for lunch. I ordered off the lunch menu and got flounder, fries and cole slaw. The flounder and cole slaw were great. My husband got a scallop sandwich that he said was perfect. The hush puppies were very good also, a little bit sweet. Service was good. Wish we had come here earlier on our trip, leaving tomorrow. read more

Very busy and popular. I was surprised that food was not good at all. How could fried food not be tasty. Hushpuppies: it deserves 5 star. Served right when we got seat, hot. Tasty. Cocktail sauce and tartar sauce: pretty good. Fried Flouder: ok Fried popcorn shrimp: gross. No flavor. Half way fried. You can tell from the picture. Fries: soggy. Salad: cafeteria style. Chunks of cucumber, tomato, onion slice. Clam chowder: diluted. Grey color. We took a few spoons, then left. I did not take a picture because I don't want to have it in my Yelp record. There's always a wait but such good quality seafood and nice staff. Nancy, our waitress, knew what I wanted better than I did and I got the most delicious grilled shrimp and scallops. Hush puppies are complimentary and delicious. Best sweet tea on the Crystal Coast. They give a military and veteran discount. Consistent over all the years we've been vacationing here! read more

Recommend the shrimp burger and fries. Staff was terrific and and anxious to help but seemed a little overwhelmed when the place was 1/2 full but, it was Memorial Day so maybe they had a little more business than they planned. Would go back. read more

I've been coming to Salter Path for decades. No matter what else, I eat a shrimp burger at Big Oak and a seafood combo at Crab Shack. This place has the best fried seafood in tremendously abundant quantities you will ever find. The Cole slaw and tartar sauce are exactly the way I like it and the hush puppies are just right. Service is always down home and friendly. Tonight I had to wait a whole five minutes between calling in take out and picking it up. And the lady in the kitchen ran out to throw in extra tartar to be sure I had enough. The combo is about 23 bucks. I still have 15 shrimp and 9 scallops left. Guess what I'm eating for leftovers tomorrow? read more

Our favorite traditional, "fried seafood" spot on the entire island. Delicious shrimp, oysters, fish, and all the sides (baked potato, slaw, green beans are favorites). Extra tasty hush puppies, and friendly staff make it a must visit. Usually a long wait, but 2 bars next door make that manageable. Kind of pricey, so sharing large plates or ordering from the senior citizen menu (if applicable) is recommended. read more

2 stars for service 5 stars for food. Went here almost exactly one year ago to the day. Oldest son and I both got snow crab legs, hubby got a fried combo and youngest son had some chicken tenders. Food was amazing as usual. Service however was not. Halfway thru our meal our server dropped off our check and never returned. No refills, no dessert options, never came back to the table. Sad for the establishment because their food is really good and usually super fast. I guess our server was done and thought we should be too. Maybe they will explain that you don't run your guests out halfway thru their meal read more

By far the best seafood, service and small town experience on the NC coast! The wait is worth the experience. To avoid waiting during peak season, get there as soon as the doors open. Everything on the menu is amazing, but the scallops, crab legs and green beans are my family's favorite items. Fun tip: While you wait for your table, hang out on the deck, order a pitcher of beer and enjoy the sunset. Also, they have pie. Don't forget the pie! It's heaven on a plate. read more

Well dont let the exterior deture you. We arrived at 430ish and was seated right away. The hush puppies was made fresh and brought to us, a lil sweet but delish. My wife and I got the shrimps and scallops which was huge portions, we had them seasoned and grilled and my children both had the 10oz grilled ribeyes each,Which was huge and cooked perfectly for $22 alot bigger than 10oz. Highly recommend. read more

Had fond memories of this place from my many visits to the beach. Went back for nostalgias sake. The fried fish is good, I got the bluefish. The sides are not. Green beans from a can, most likely pre-breaded frozen okra. The food is under seasoned. Sweet tea was great and the waitress was nice. It's just so average. The food comes out on plastic plates, yea it is no frills cooking but is that a good thing? read more

Food was good, the hush puppies instead of bread is a great idea. My husbands flounder was spoiled, but everyone else's food was decent. We know the founder was spoiled because someone else at the table had flounder cooked the same way, and it was not. Our server was horrible. No personality, no smiles, didn't check on us, just the worst. read more

We have been going to the Crab Shack for 20 years. We came tonight early (4:45)with a large party. (14 but went to 10 over time) and were told the wait would be around 30 min. We agreed that they could split our party into multiple tables. As it started to pour rain..I was told we were the next party to be seated. We went in I side to get out of the rain and we're told to go to our cars because of space. I explained that we were next on the list and was told "Well it will be at least another hour!" I explained that we've been here an hour and we are happy to split up. "There are no tables for you" (there was one empty four top and a two others getting bussed). I told her we could easily take those tables and she said it would be a continued wait for our party and there was nothing she could do. The attitude we received from the front desk person was so rude and it offended the rest of the party. We decided to leave and spend our money elsewhere. The mismanagement of organizing waiting parties and the barking attitude were excessive. We have never had treatment like this over the years and I'm sure they were just overwhelmed with weather but unfortunately they lost summer regulars. Attitude and eye rolling doesn't really convey our NC Southern Hospitality. read more

Came to the Crab Shack after a visit to the Aquarium. The meal options are mostly fried fried fried, but they do offer grilled version of their fish for an additional charge. Puzzled on why, but I'd rather not eat fried if I can get grilled so that's what I chose. I am assuming they basted in butter? Not sure. The sides were not very good. The coleslaw was way too sweet so I could only eat half of my portion, the black eyed peas were just boiled (I had asked the waitress but she told me they were not, alas they were) and pretty flavorless and my husband's pasta salad was not good at all. I believe they put some sort of Italian store bought dressing on it, so it was very sour and not good at all. We didn't eat it. The portion of fish were very large and enough that we were both full without eating our sides, but it would have been nice to have some veggies to go with our protein. I really liked that it was a mamas and papas restaurant, right on the water, and very coastal in feel. They had strange funerary wreaths in shadowboxes on the walls. I had never seen that before and although it was odd I found it very charming. I am assuming they were of loved ones who died at sea? Not sure. Checked this out for lunch, good specials at $9.99. Cole slaw and potato salad was homemade, seafood locally sourced ( go figure). Lunch crowd was decent but dinner crowd was overwhelming with a wait as the summer people are here. We did speckled trout and crab with the sides and were very happy. Food was very good! We especially loved the hush puppies & crab dip. We didn't give it five stars because of the service. Our server took a long time to greet us, then when she did, she took our beverage order and we never saw her again. We found out later that she forgot about us. HOW DO YOU FORGET ABOUT A TABLE OF GUESTS, especially when you walked right by them to help other people & collect tips from tables right next to them??? Thankfully, someone noticed it and ended up taking care of us but once we got our food, service was pretty scarce. read more

Who ever heard of a seafood restaurant that doesn't have real butter!? Even though the menu says "panned in butter". And crab with melted oil to dip it in?! The tarter sauce in the jumbo squeeze bottle on the table must be a safety violation. Aren't restaurants required to refrigerate Mayo? The "service" was extremely slow. To order, to get our food, and when the pale, anemic #10 can green beans were served, I took one look and said no thank you. She didn't even ask why. The waitress ran by at one point and asked if everything was alright, not pausing long enough for an answer. My senior dinner would have been adequate had I been offered something to replace the green beans for $23.99! Overpriced and Underwhelming. read more

Watch out for bones! They filet their own fish here. There were soooo many bones it was impossible to safely eat. I asked the waitress about it and she said that's how they serve it there. How about a little warning!! Bluefish is fairly easy to fillet with a bone structure that's easy to follow. So maybe get a new guy. They do not devein their shrimp here. I know its been cooked so there's no bacteria but the grit was off putting as well as the look. Yuck. The coleslaw was ok, the potato salad was ok, just mediocre. The deviled crab tastes like cornbread stove top stuffing only. It's a busy place right on the water and it was packed for the lunch special $12.99. Hush puppies are complimentary here. Cocktail sauce is tasty. People are friendly. View of the bay is nice. It's a cafeteria setting and the dishes are a step above paper plates. Forks tines are bent up. Only beer and wine, no liquor. Was super excited to take my family to what seemed to be a very local seafood restaurant. Several of the staff were incredibly rude and short with us. Myself, my husband and another couple decided to plate share so we could all try different kinds of seafood. The server brought out our food she didn't bring any extra plates (just three with food on all of them) and when one of us asked for a plate she told us it's the one holding the baked potato and we can just use that. The food was incredibly undesirable. Everything that is fried (most of the menu) tasted the exact same whether it was chicken tenders, hush puppies, oysters or flounder. I think if it was a cheaper restaurant in the Midwest I would understand why the food is so bad, but being right on the coast and paying over $80 for two meals and a kids meal was just too much to ignore. I would highly recommend you skip on this one if you're visiting the Indian Ocean area. read more

Crab Shack is a favorite for my husband and me. We aren't even "Beach" people, and we live 2.5 hours away... and we drive down just to eat at Crab Shack. I have to recommend the scallops panned in butter. They are my favorite. I usually order the combination of those along with fried shrimp. My husband has special dietary needs of NO SALT. Usually, seafood restaurants are a no-go (as are many other restaurants), but Crab Shack does not salt their food, so YOU can control the salt. This is great for us! Love the hush puppies (and you'll have to be careful to avoid eating too many before your plate arrives). Give them a try for the 'fresh off the boat' seafood. The decor may be simplistic with the choice of the tables and chairs, but the view over the sound is gorgeous! Enjoy a little time on the back deck to take in the view. read more
