Staff were friendly on both of our visits and helped guide us through the options. We haven't yet been able to try their signature rolled ice cream -- once due to an anti‑griddle issue, and once because they were out of a specific cream needed -- but fear not, there were plenty of other excellent choices. Some in our group went with classic scoops, but we opted for the Ice Cream Nachos, which turned out to be outstanding. You choose your scoops, and they're served over delicate, crisp pizzelles and drizzled with sauces. We picked Cinnamon Roll and Banana Cream Pie scoops, both bursting with flavor and leaving us simply smiling. The finishing drizzle of pancake syrup tied everything together beautifully. Service was extremely friendly and prompt, and the outdoor seating made the experience feel relaxed and fun. This review reflects two separate visits, both of which were excellent. The location has an outdoor bench, as well as a few high top seats inside. The decor is fun and colorful inside, featuring artwork from local artists and a Polaroid wall of customers. My partner got Mousse Fruit Cake and Dubai Strawberry Cup. I didn't get to taste the strawberry, but the Mousse Fruit Cake she got was pretty good and not anything i really see offered around us. The staff suggested we try it with the vanilla ice cream and I'm very glad we listen to them! We also added strawberries to the Nutella bubble waffle and there was a pretty significant pile of strawberries on top of it! The staff are friendly and helpful, too. Honestly, though, the best feature of this place is its location. It sits right near the Erie Canal, so you can get a cup of gelato, walk a few hundred yards down the canal path, and then settle onto a bench, look out over the water, and enjoy your gelato. That setting does more for the experience than anything on the menu. I do have a few concerns, though. The plastic serving cups are too small for the amount of gelato they hold, so it tends to melt and run down the sides, making for a messy experience. The plastic "spoon" is weirdly shaped like a small, flat shovel, and I much prefer a utensil shaped like a conventional spoon. Lately I've taken to bringing my own metal spoon with me. The cups also have an odd scalloped shape rather than smooth sides. I don't see any advantage to it, and it just makes getting all the gelato out harder than it should be. Switching to bigger cups with smooth sides, ideally biodegradable paper, would be an easy fix. As for the gelato itself, it's good but not great. I do enjoy sitting outside on a warm summer evening with a cup, but I can't say I ever find myself craving the product. Finally, and this is admittedly a very minor point, "Royal Café" is not a great name for this type of establishment. It sounds more like the name you would expect for a Chinese restaurant.
