The Crushed Olive is a small chain of gourmet olive oil and vinegar shops that opened in Hickory, North Carolina in 2010. It was founded by husband and wife Bob and Mona Rossero. Bob had owned the Colony Lounge in Huntington Station, New York for 30 years. He and his wife Mona (a former medical transcriber) then retired to North Carolina. On a trip to Northern California, the two discovered a shop that sold infused olive oils and vinegars. They decided to bring the concept to North Carolina and opened their first location there in 2010. A year later, they opened a flagship store in Huntington, New York and more locations would open throughout Long Island in the following years. In 2013, the Rosseros sold off their original Hickory location in order to concentrate on their Long Island locations. Each location offers more than two dozen varieties of flavor-infused olive oils and balsamic vinegars. Today the small chain has five locations in Huntington, Babylon, Sayville, Stony Brook, and Commack. My wife and I visited the Crushed Olive's Port Jefferson location (now closed) in October 2018. We were celebrating our first wedding anniversary on Long Island with a private limousine tour of the North Fork Wine Trail. We discovered the Crushed Olive while exploring all of the quaint shops in Port Jefferson. All of the various oils and vinegars are stored in gleaming stainless steel containers with taps called "fustis". Customers are encouraged to sample the oils and vinegars with cubes of fresh Italian bread from a local baker. Some of our favorite olive oils we sampled included the Blood Orange, Eureka Lemon, Olive Wood Smoked, and Tuscan Herb. Some of the balsamic vinegars we enjoyed included the Black Cherry, Dark Chocolate, Fig, and Pomegranate. We purchased some small bottles to take home. We have since ordered other bottles online and had them shipped to our house, including their 18 Year Traditional Balsamic Vinegar that is aged in oak barrels in Modena, Italy for 18 years. Not to be confused with The Rushed Olive, which is when you gulp down your olives far too quickly and get indie gestion. As opposed to corporate, sponsored, major label gestion. I was crushed when I realized that the crushed olive had closed for the day by the time I came upon it, so to speak. Thankfully I returned to Huntington a couple of days later and got here well in advance of closing, and I'm very glad I did. This is a pretty fantastic store located in Huntington and one of the great things about it is that is locally owned, and has tons of real olive oils, olives, spices, and everything you can imagine from the Greek, Italian, and wider Mediterranean regions. A lot of it is imported, and while it's not cheap to import all these fine foods, in the name of supporting local businesses and how unspeakably delicious some of the stuff is, and it's much better than the stuff that for example Wegmans is offering, then I have to give it five stars and implore everybody on Long Island or visiting Long Island, to try this, and the nearby (and incredible) Little Vincent's Pizza. read more

Great store to visit and purchase something. I love good olive oil, but this is a store to explore oils, mustard and vinegar. I generally don't like red vinegar. Watching Stanley Tucci recently, I began to understand good aged vinegar is very different. So I tasted and purchased their 18 year aged vinegar. The taste is outstanding, different and a bit sweet. I've walked past this shop for years but have never went in until now. I seriously didn't know what i was missing! I highly recommend just going in to check it out. I was wanting some quality balsamic vinegar so I knew exactly where to go, this shop is so clean and inviting inside and they encourage you to taste. I walked around and i think I must have tried all or close to all of the vinegars on little pieces of good bread. It was such a hard choice so I started with 3 and will go back when I finish with the ones I chose. If nothing else, get the aged balsamic. If you any have been eating the balsamic vinegar from the supermarket, this will blow your mind. You can also reduce the vinegars and make them into intensely flavored glazes. I was not there for oil but I had to taste the truffle oils and they were so good, I did refrain from buying them but i'm not sure how long until I just have to go back for one if not both of them. The only not positive (un positive?) comment I can say is that the labels on the bottles that I bought came off pretty quickly so just keep that in mind if you want to know what is in each bottle. read more

Whaaaat goes on in herrrr? I've seen this new shop on Main Street in Hton for a few months now and decided today was the day I would conquer it. Too bad it didn't need any conquering. It's so simple. Dozens of pots of oils and vinegars with bread and tasting cups near each one. You don't need any prior knowledge of oils bc they have a fairly lengthy description on every pot. The woman at the counter was more than willing to help me out when I came to her and said "ummm, so, what do I do?" Make sure you have some time to spend in here before you visit. All the oils are distinct and different from the next, leading you to taste most of em in a search for the perfect combo. I made it through about 6 different ones before I got impatient and picked up a small bottle of aged balsamic and an organic garlic evoo. Total price $18. I really liked this place although it didn't live up to what I was hoping for. I've ben in some amazing oil/cheese shops in Key West, Cali, and Holland and Switzerland, and I guess my expectations were a little high. What is good is that it is self tasting with the plastic containers and bread. I felt like there was just a slight lack of originallity in some of the stuff, although there were some very tasty oils and balsamic, I bought 3, and still wanted 3 more. The 3 I bought though were just simple though. What is nice is the cheese shop in the back. They had 1 of the cheeses in particular I was looking for, but unfortunately I had just ate at Medit Snack Bar before walking in, so I was not in the mood to taste all the others. This play is simply genius. An array of infused olive oils and vinegars, any flavor you could possibly dream of. Blood orange olive oil, chipotle, roasted almond! And the vinegars; blueberry, coconut, cinnamon, DARK CHOCOLATE, ESPRESSO ( my two FAVORITES) the selection is incredible. The best part is they offer bread to taste whatever you like! The workers don't hover over you either and make you feel like you are tasting too many. To get the full awesomeness of this place prepare to spend some time making your decisions. There are self tasting stations there with little pieces of bread, but trust me you will quickly tally up a price you weren't expecting. One of my favorite places to explore! This shop is located in the heart of Huntington Village. Their philosophy is simple. They sell the very best olive oils and vinegars from around the world. However,the coolest aspect about shopping at The Crushed Olive is the tasting concept. All the products are on display with little cups and cubed bread next to them. You can sample everything! And the staff wants you to! They don't follow you around, or watch how much you're taking, or stand behind you ready to pounce when you go MMMMmmmmmm! They just let you be. And they know their stuff. This place is pretty gorge. Nice, clean, friendly staff. Now...I had 3 stars, but that's probably not being very nice, so 4 stars for sure. The 3 probably came down more to a palate/personal taste kind of thing. Unfortunately, I think that their balsamic vinegars are really not my thing. Many of them were cloyingly sweet and hit you over the head with flavour, instead of something a little more subtle. Literally, their coconut and mango balsamic (dark) taste like Pina Colada's in my mouth. Like, I wanted to take a shot of vodka to cleanse my palate. Now, I know it's because their Balsamics are 12 years old, so that could just not be my thing....but even the lemon or the lavender (that one was pretty good), were still VERY sweet. The white balsamics were a bit more manageable. They DO have a large selection of olive oil and other assorted goodies though. They have a fantastic Chipotle hot mustard that I had to buy, so it wasn't all bad. It's quite redolent of the Balsamic/Olive Oil shop at Chelsea markets so...YAY for one like that being closer to home! It has cheeses of different types and the counter help there is always willing to give you a sample of something they have. I have been a fan of this place for more than a couple of years. The store it self is Very clean, and has so many choices. They recently added local cheese section all the way back. I thought it was little too expensive so could not afford, but all cheese looked yummy. I do not need to say about their olive oils and vinegars. It is just fun and perfect. And most importantly, the workers there are always welcoming, and do their job quickly. And at the register, they ask you if purchase is for gift, and they wrap it with cute ribbons and papers. I came here for a Yelp Elite event and what a great place! Such friendly staff, very knowledgeable, and a really nice store overall. They have olive oils and vinegars I've never even imagined. The store is centered around tasting so you don't have to ask to taste anything you can just jump right in and go for it! The staff was very engaged in making sure my friend and I had no questions or needed help. They also explained to us that we could taste whatever we wanted. It's set up really nicely and easy to navigate. Everything is clean and organized really well. What delicious oils! I rather enjoyed almost every one that I tasted. I'm not big on balsamic but their balsamic vinegars and white balsamic vinegars were really interesting. They had some truly delicious and unique flavor combinations I've never heard of and something for every palate or type of dish. The coconut one really stood out to me and I liked the wild blueberry for a salad, the oregano one I thought was interesting as well. I picked up a bottle of my favorite oil of the night, the Porcini Mushroom Olive Oil! It's really delicious! Overall I would definitely come back here and recommend this place. As soon as you walk in they want to make certain you have an excellent tasting experience. If you haven't been there before they will guide you through the taste testing and purchasing process. You can literally try EVERYTHING in the store! I think I tried about twenty olive oils and balsamic vinegars. They should totally sell baguettes on the way out the door! I decided upon the following vinegar selections: Espresso Balsamic vinegar.. oh yeah! So great for a steak marinade with an espresso umami-flavoring. Also chose the Raspberry Balsamic vinegar, great for a balsamic and olive oil dressing with a fruity twist. Most vinegars are $16.99 for 375 ml and $13.99 for 200 ml. A light touch goes a long way. This place has everything. They sell infused Olive Oil, vinegar, I went to a similar store in Philadelphia which was owns by Chef Garces (of Iron Chef). His store was part restaurant but they had a similar extensive olive oil and vinegar selection. I'm glad a place like this has opened on LI. I didn't want to have to travel to Philly for some more truffle infused olive oil. The sheer amount of choices you have here can be daunting. Be prepared to spend money. Great spot to learn about the world of olive oil, which is a lot more diverse than I ever imagined. I bought my mom one of the olive oil bottles as a gift. The best part is that you can take the bottle back and re-fill it with a different oil after you have finished it. I found this place online, and went to the bricks-and-mortar store in Huntington to get a gift for my brother, who's a foodie but has allergies to many foods, which cause him migraines. Happily, olive oil doesn't. The selection here is amazing, and tasting them all is like a cross between a wine tasting and a museum event. Lots of fun, the owner's really nice, and the prices are rational. I only wish they'd open a Nassau County branch, closer to my home. I bought several bottles for my brother, who was thrilled with the gift.
