We found our new favorite Cuban restaurant. It's a little out of our way but certainly worth it. The food was authentic and the service was wonderful. When we arrived rather early there were only two other tables filled and a few people at the bar. We were seated immediately and served a delicious bread basket. As the night progressed so did the people. We had our order in mind before we arrived, Ropa Vieja and Palomilla Steak. I was able to substitute the rice and beans for a very fresh side salad. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The atmosphere felt like a comfortable authentic Cuban restaurant and we were amazed to hear they have been here 35 years.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Our sever had been there 25 years. We really enjoyed our dinner here on Sept 10. They started us out with fresh warm buttered bread that was so soft and fluffy. We ordered drinks, mine was the Havana mojito (tequila) and while it didn't taste very strong at all ie i couldn't tell there was tequila in it, it was delicious with plenty of fresh mint and I did enjoy it. We had empanadas as appetizer and the hot pico they came with was awesome - empanadas were impressively moist fresh and very full. Best we've had. I ordered vaca frita which was crispy with a good mild flavor of the marinade And crispy without being oily. Ordered black beans to put atop the white rice and they were very flavorful too. Sweet plantains, delicious. My husband ordered the Churrasco a thin steak with chimichurri which was ok - he enjoyed it enough especially after putting a side of spicy hot pico on top, but I don't think he liked it enough to order it again. I tasted it and thought the chimichurri was not quite as flavorful as I'd hoped, to help the otherwise bland steak. So putting hot pico on the leftovers he took home really helped it. He also ordered a side of black beans to go with his rice. He enjoyed his bourbon & tonic. Next time we may try the Moho rice I think it's called, that already has black beans in it. I don't know if I can do a double review or how many photos I can post but a few days later we ordered delivery of Cubano sandwiches, one with fries & one with plantain chips that come with them; plus a tamal and 2 empanadas. The empanadas were a bit disappointing compared to the above mentioned dine-in experience because they weren't nearly as full. I've never had a Cuban tamal before (we split it) so I don't know what's fair to say about it - other than it was not to my liking enough to order it again. There were chopped bits of pork in it and I don't know what the orange coloring was but overall somewhat bland and couldn't taste the pork bits. I had been hoping the pork would be in the center, meaty chunk surrounded by the corn tamal so that I could actually taste the pork. The tamal was laying atop an oily-orange soaked corn husk in the go container. Oh and there were onions in there too, to eat with it. The Cuban sandwiches were good & meaty. My husband commented though that they were too dry. He added pickles and mustard to his; I didn't add anything. It was good, but I'm not sure it's the best Cubano I've tasted. I did love the shredded roast pork in it - that's always the best part to me. I saved the plantain chips for later snack and enjoyed them. Oh and we don't know why but my sandwich came with liquidy mojo sauce/ marinade, and my husband's didn't. I did dip some bites into it for the moisture especially some pieces of the bread/bun, but the flavorful marinade then takes over and it's not the same as eating a Cuban sandwich for the meat & cheese flavors. Overall the vaca frita was the best food there so far and I'd go back to dine in again in hopes the empanadas are just better as served for dine in. Wink. The food is very bland here. It may be designed to accommodate the local palate. The best way I can describe it is that the flavor here is the "taste of the wealthy retirement community". The frijoles negros are fantastic. Well-seasoned, earthy, and a nice hint of spice. The Havana Mojito has fresh mint I am convinced they grow. The whole mixture is well muddled. The decor and tableware are simple, rustic, and warming. The arroz amarillo is chewy and flavorful. The maduros (sweet plaitains) are well done and caramelized. After being in Florida for 8 months, I finally got to try out a local Cuban restaurant. We came here for lunch and arrived right before noon and there was still a good amount of seating available. The service here was pretty good. My husband and I both got the same dish, which was the Cubano sandwich that came with plantain chips. We also got an empanada. I really liked the sandwich and chips. They also provided complimentary warm toasted bread and it was very good. I look forward to coming here again to try out a different dish. The prices here are very reasonable for lunch. Parking here was also very easy with spots right outside the restaurant but I can see it getting busy if you come after noon for lunch. read more

Best Cuban sandwich in the state ! All fresh ingredients accompanied by plantains and a delicious mojito dipping sauce. The ham and pork were marinated nicely and the melted cheese was dripping off the side. Perfect! Croquettes (hamon) were freshly made, very tasty, and also accompanied by a delicious spicy salsa. Lightly breaded, rolled and fried to a golden presentation. The toasted bread served to the table was hot and fluffy. Red Sangria was ok, fruit not marinated in for the sweetness, but fresh, crispy fruit added to the glass. And the reason it is not a five star, the dinner. Authentic Cuban selections were picadillo and ropa veija. The best way to try out a new Cuba restaurant is the sole food. Both good, but missing some spice to create the Cuban recipe. Also A bit too liquidy on the sauces it sat in. Although it won't discourage me from going back, I won't order the same thing next time. For a restaurant to be in business in the same location for 26 years, they must be doing something right. And Cuban Cafe serves up decent, sometimes better than good, Cuban food. Their broiled fish, usually red snapper, is quite tasty, and their shrimp in garlic sauce is a large serving of medium sized shrimp in a zesty sauce. Dining with a Puerto Rican who is hyper critical about rice, beans, flan, and tostones, his verdict is that they are each outstanding. And that's important, of course. The environment is clean, almost spartan, other than the artwork on the walls. The servers are attentive and efficient, and some have been there for 20+ years. No nonsense. The portions are well sized, although they could be a bit more generous with the sides, other than the rice, which is a huge portion. The lunch crowd is mainly business people and appears younger than the evening dinner crowd, comprised of older local Boca couples looking for Cuban food without the need to travel to West Palm or Miami. The kitchen is fast, so you can get in, order, eat, and be out of there in under an hour. Great at lunch if that's what you are looking for. Not a place to stretch out your meal, though. So if you're Cuban, or have been exposed to authentic Cuban restaurants (with Cuban chefs) in South Florida, you'll likely be underwhelmed. I totally forgot about Cuban Café which I had been to years ago when it was actually owned by Cuban owners. My son recommended we meet there for lunch since he works close by, years later. Since then I have been their twice for several reasons. First, I must say that every time I have been there, the parking lot is full, there is a line of people always waiting and the tables and bar are always filled to capacity. The location is perfect, just south of Spanish River on Second Avenue, where there are a lot of business within a short distance, so no wonder it is always busy. When you walk in do not get discouraged to be in a line of people waiting because it goes really fast. They seem to move tables quickly at least when it comes to lunch. Twice, my son and I got seated immediately at a regular table, and once I sat at a large bar which was excellent, great service, 2 TV's directly in front of me and an extremely friendly server behind the bar. The service at the tables are no different. Once we placed our order, we got served within 10 minutes. They have the service thing down right,, from seating to serving and getting the bill. I have been in and out of there in 45 minutes. The atmosphere is really clean and their are two dining areas. One that seats 2 and 4 top tables and the other on the other side of the restaurant for large parties also, which is a much bigger area. This is not a small place although from the front it looks small. I love the bar area the best. It is not your typical liquor bar, but an eating area with a couple of Cuban Coffee machines and a small wine cooler. Plenty of room and quick service as well. They do serve wines from Argentina and Chile as well as beer, Margaritas and Home Made Sangria, either white or red. Since the restaurant was sold to different owners six years ago, the original chef had left. It now does not serve the "authentic" Cuban food you would get at the Cuban owned restaurants, but your typical pulled pork, beef, chicken and fish, all very generous portions. They always serve fried plantains, black beans and rice, also in large portions and consistently great flavor. I happen to love their pulled pork. I have had the chicken and I is really flavorful marinated and grilled with a lime based marinade. I ordered their Cuban Coffee in the end, and it is just as good as any Cuban restaurant, including the authentic places I have been to. I really think Cuban Café is a GREAT lunch place. You get seated quickly, the service is excellent like they have been doing it the same way for years. The food is really good but if you are experienced in real Cuban cuisine, do not expect this place to live up to the great places you may have tried in South Florida that ARE authentic Cuban.
