Amazing onion rings, Italian beefs and ice cream. Italian beefs are better than portillos. Get it with mozzarella! I don't know how their onion rings stay in tact even after every bite. I have driven past this place for years and I have never stopped until today for a late lunch. The place is your typical small town dairy store with fifty years under its belt. The place looks the the part for a 50 year old with walk up windows and a small outdoor seating area on the side. I was not expecting very much for a cheeseburger and just something super average so I ordered a double because a picture on Yelp didn't look very big, mistake because it was pretty big and at $5.40 very reasonable. My first impression was is that the double cheeseburger looked big and good with fresh toppings. I got lettuce, tomatoes, onions, pickles and ketchup for my first sampling. My second impression was that this is a tasty cheeseburger and way better than I expected. The bun was no generic white commercial grocery store that was perfect because it was soft/fresh and just dense enough to hold my double cheeseburger and still taste everything. The meat patties were hot with melted cheese and very moist/tender, no dry over cooked to death beef which I liked. The toppings were very fresh and the coldness was definitely noticed because it was great vs the hot beef on top of them. Wow this was probably the best cheeseburger from a WI dairy store that I can remember having, the hot vs cold on a quality bun really make the difference, see my pictures. Hebron (Illinois, not Palestine) is a dinksquat town of around 1200 in northern Illinois. You may know it as the home of Chris Ferrara, who is in the Bugler Hall of Fame. No? Anyway, it's right on the border of Wisconsin/Illinois. Can't miss it. They have a Dollar General, that's kind of exciting. (FYI, the bathrooms are kept locked). And a stoplight (well, flashing red, anyway). A small frozen pizza manufacturer (Champion) (but you can't buy them there, you have to walk down to the gas station). There's a bar, allegedly famous for good whiskey and bad pizza. (Local gossip, only). A couple or three restaurants, one renown for having a giant fiberglass chicken in the parking lot, then there is Hazels, a cafe and bakery, with excellent breakfasts and lunches. I confess although the food is great, I went primarily to admire the help. And then there is "The Dari" - a seasonal ice cream/burger place, right at the flashing red light. There's a bunch of "mom and pop" places like this around Chicagoland. I like them. Seek them out. Down the road a piece, there's The Dairy Mart, in Huntley, IL, a place I also like. Wrote about it a few years back. Another great one is Wedl's, small town in Southern Wisconsin, been selling burgers from a seasonal shack on the sidewalk for a century! The Dari has a pretty ambitious menu for a small operation. While I was tempted to go for the "gravy sandwich," I opted for a double cheeseburger and rings, and a small chocolate malt, just because they offer "malts." Not many people do anymore, sadly. How was it? Well, it's a good value, at $5 for a half pound of ground beef. Excellent bun. There was a sign in the window saying they exclusively use some particular brand, I didn't pay attention to it at the time. The beef patties are standard restaurant supply frozen patties. Not a complaint, just an observation. It didn't seem like they add any of their own seasoning. Very melty American cheese food. Good pickle. Diced onion. Pretty ok. Onion rings also from a food service supplier I'm guessing. Slight added flavor to the batter. These are seasoned, as an ingredient or after. I quite enjoyed them. Best part of the meal for me. Chocolate malt. Real malt powder. Kinda hard to find anymore. I was hoping for scooped ice cream, but their base is soft serve. I don't fault them for any of their ingredients or prep methods. It's a small operation, small kitchen, in a small town, but can get overwhelmed (when I was at the window, a guy was picking up $156 worth of food orders), so they have to be as efficient as possible. The burgers were recommended very highly to me. They didn't live up to the hype. But it was a pleasant day for a drive in the country and to have a meal sitting outside. read more

My fella is a local and has been going to the Dari his whole life, and he talked it up a lot so I had high hopes, and I was blown away. My husband and I went to a graduation party in Lake Geneva last weekend and we hadn't eaten anything all day. We knew there would be food at the party but it was late afternoon, the sun was hot, and we were starving. Ice cream sounded amazing. My husband asked if I wanted a Frosty from Wendy's while we were in Woodstock and I said, "No! I want real ice cream from a real small-town ice cream place." We drove on. We approached the small town of Hebron, stopped at an intersection, glanced over and saw this wonderfully delightful small-town ice cream place with a dozen bikers parked in front. Small town + ice cream + bikers = Score! We did a u-turn, parked nearby, and got in line to order (and then ran back to the car to get my wallet since it was cash only). The Dari has a lot of options: burgers, hot dogs, drinks, fried foods, and dairy treats. They even have black bean burgers! Very cool. I had a cherry-dipped vanilla ice cream cone and my husband opted for a chocolate milkshake. The prices are great, the quantities are generous, the treats are yummy, and the camaraderie among everyone was very pleasant. I'm so glad we stopped here -- we'll come back if we head this way again. After the party was over, we passed this place while driving home and noticed an even bigger line of adults and kids outside the lit-up ice cream place. Very cool. EDIT : I read some other reviews and have edited my review to add, the owners of the Dari have nothing to do with the flag shop across the street. Maybe approach the flag shop owner and the Village of Hebron? Credit/debit card processing companies charge merchants 1.5% to 3.5% and the merchant passes those fees along as a surcharge to the customer. There are two banks in town just south of the Dari, ATM fees may apply though, or keep an extra $20 or two on hand. read more

This place is incredible. The food and ice cream is great and reasonably priced. The Dari is a classic staple in Hebron. Hebron just wouldn't be the same without the Dari or the 1952 high school basketball championship. On our visit we had the bratwurst and pork tenderloin, which I believe were fresh from the local area. I also had a vanilla ice cream cone dipped in chocolate. They had a lot of interesting flavors and everyone in town was passing though to get their daily fix of the Dari. This is a must stop if you're passing through. read more

The food was DELICIOUS. All of my friends got different things (baby beef, grilled chicken sandwhich, double cheeseburger, and onion rings) and we enjoyed every meal. The onion rings have such a crust outside with a tender inside and a perfect amount of salt. The baby beef is really well seasoned. Growing up in neighboring Lake Geneva, WI, the Dari is the only place to get ice cream in town. No, not literally, but why get a stomach ache from Coldstone if you can get a classic dipped soft serve cone from Hebron? My family has been coming to this ice cream parlor weekly (in the summer, only) since I was a kid. They serve actual food like hot dogs, burgers, and fries, but we tended to stick to their chocolate-dipped cones. If we made dessert that night, we would pick up a pint of their vanilla and bring it home with us. A great feature from the Dari is their dog-friendly atmosphere. We used to bring my dog to get a cone with us, and they would put a treat on the top of hers to give it that extra touch. This place is family owned and operated, and you can tell by the warm welcome you receive every time you go. True, my relationship with this place has made me grow biased, but you can't fight the power of hole-in-the-wall ice cream shops no matter where you are. These kinds of places are the best. I've been coming to this local institution a few times a year for the last ten years. I will start off with what is outstanding. The quality of the food is beyond anything thing I've had at similar types of fast food establishments. There is a wide variety of food as well, and the price is very reasonable. The food itself is reason enough to visit this location, and I would give six stars if I could. Now the drawbacks. First, the wait times can be a little long so be forewarned. You can wait 15-20 minutes for a hot dog, although the wait will be worth it. Second, there is no indoor seating, only outside benches. However, these benches are plagued by flies, obviously attracted to the day-long supply of food. Today, my family could only eat half our food before we were driven away by the cloud of flies that descended upon us, So best eat your food in your car. Finally, the workers do not wear hair nets. So along with the flies that came with today's food, I got a little something extra that I also didn't want. The flies I can forgive, we are outside after all, but not hair in my food. So only three stars from me. Go for the food, but grab it and run, and check for hairs before you take a bite. read more

My husband and I drove to Richmond to ride our bikes on the Prairie Trail. The temperature was about 90 degrees and by the time we reached Hebron, we were sweaty and up for something cold and delicious. We split a sundae with hot fudge and almonds and coconut and a massive amount of totally yummy whipped cream! Heaven!!!! The price was very reasonable too. I've been here twice now for ice cream and this is right up there with the best for soft serve. First time I had a sundae with all the toppings and it was thoroughly delicious. The ice cream is very flavorful even without being doctored up with all the goodies. The next time I had a chocolate Boston and it was also as good as I've had. Went here after spending a day on Lake Mary, first we ordered food. two cheeseburgers w/fries. They were very good....the bun might be a little too big for the burger, wish they would use smaller buns....but THE BURGERS AND FRIES WERE VERY GOOD. Then went back to get ice cream for dessert, my wife had a fluffer nutter w/hot fudge which she said was very good and I had a stawberry shortcake. OMG that strawberry shortcake was enormous I could not finsh it but it was delicious!!! Also, the people that work here are fast, efficient and friendly, great customer service her too!!!
