A good stop for a drink! We stumbled upon the bar after the karaoke bar in the same building was way too busy to be comfortable. The Dean Bar was hidden behind a curtain and had only a few people in it. It was very easy to get a seat even during a busy Friday night. We sat at the bar and were greeted promptly by the bartender. The vibe was like a small, kind of dark speakeasy with one bartender whose life story you will know by the end of the night. I love that vibe because it's cozy and you can also hear the person you're with clearly enough to have a full conversation. The drinks were pretty tasty, nothing that blew us away. A cool bar tucked into the Dean Hotel. There's a cool FINE sign to take a photo with before entering. You enter in complete darkness and you turn to the right and make your way through the curtain to a cool and mysterious speakeasy vibe. It's quite intimate and serving staff is quite attentive. A nice candlelit spot for a date or a night out with friends. Jungle animals in the forest adorned the walls adding to the cool vibe. COVID proof of vaccination is required. Staying at the Dean Hotel (separate review and a bad experience) Came to this bar around 5pm for a before dinner drink. Sat st the bar. The bartender was awesome and made us two delicious old fashioned's. We then came back around 10pm after dinner because we were in the mood for a nice craft cocktail and didn't want a loud bar, we were going to go to Stable. We had about an 8 minute wait for a table as the bar was full. We ordered while we waited and was seated with in a few minutes and the bartender we had earlier in the day brought us our cocktails. The hostess was this short brunette white woman who looked at me and my date (both women of color) and refused to let us in because she assumed we were joining another party of 8. She was incredibly rude, abrasive, and just refused to answer any questions while she trying to kick out a party of 8 (who was majority black women). What a waste. read more

So I am torn and will revisit this once they reopen as their new concept come sept or oct. I was sad to hear that the Magdlna Room closed and they changed it over to the dean bar. Is it just me or does it/has it always smelled like farts when you walk into this room? It legit hits me, every single time... The bartender told me that they were closing the doors shortly for a renovation and would reopen in a month or so. He claims they are going for the same feel but with a different concept overall. Very cool bar in the Dean Hotel thats tucked away. The dark ambiance and overall vibe was cool, kind of a speak easy tone to it. Drinks were decent, good selection of beers, one cider and wines. The cocktails were tailored towards more whiskey, bourbon, rye with a few others mixed in but were pricey for Providence. Hope to see a better selection of cider and beer in the future. read more

Awful. Awful. Awful. They used to be a way better place when they had old owners. It was called the Magdalene room. Now it's called SKIP THIS BAR. They had this terrible woman counting each person that came in. Her math must be different though because we went out to pee and weren't allowed back in?? Even though our husbands were sitting next to and empty seat with our coat on it. She also told me it was fine if I "look around" and come back out. Excuse me? It's a fucking bar first off ima grab a drink, secondly I was THE F-ING BRIDE in my WEDDING DRESS and she wasn't going to allow me to get a drink with the rest of my party? This is my day. I go where I want. Clearly she has never been a bride or has any respect for them. I can see why, with that personality I wouldn't see anyone marrying her. Now let's talk about the atmosphere. Close your eyes annnnnnd that's it. Pitch black. Now I'm not talking dark speakeasy style. I'm talking pitch. Black. Black. Couldn't see a thing. I literally think the only light was the open flame candle they had on each table. This place sucks. Don't go. My husband and I love this bar. We live down the street and post-work cocktails with knowledgeable, friendly mixologists are always welcome. The renovation from the former Magdalena Room is on point. Better lighting and seating. Highly recommend (and I'm picky). :) read more

I need to offset those 2 other reviews because I went 2 days after they opened and had 3 fantastic cocktails, including their take on the manhattan which is the best manhattan I have ever had in my life! The new space is lovely, and I love the integrated bartop lamps. The bar is laid out like at The Eddy. It was a busy weekend downtown as any Saturday is but The Dean Bar had plenty of open seats. The ambiance is nice but it couldn't make up for the experience I had. I was waiting for a friend to park so I decided to order a drink. My friend was trying to find parking and it took him about 20 minutes to find parking. I didn't get my drink until he actually walked through the door. Him and I started talking and he wasn't looking to waste the same amount of time I did. so I walked up to the bar, handed them the drink I never even sipped and told the bartender I wasn't excited about the service and we'd go somewhere else. We went to North right next door(get the ham biscuits) and yes they had a wait but it was much more reasonable giving they were packed. I'm eating there with my friend and this man I assume to be the manager comes and tells me I "forgot" to pay the $11 bill for my drink. It was so obnoxious and embarrassing . You made me wait 20 minutes for a drink in a place with maybe 10 people on a Saturday. And you followed me with check in hand expecting me to graciously pay you for your mismanagement and employees that lack both timing and awareness. I will never be returning to this place. read more
