The desert room is definitely a dive bar. They open at 6am so you graveyard shift people can come here after work. I'm a local and this has been my go to bar since I turned 21. I really enjoy going to this place because it's a very mature atmosphere. How are the drinks are a little bit expensive why I have no idea but they need to come down on the prices. I eat they stop serving the adios for whatever reason but the other drinks like the margaritas they're like $12-$15 a pop. I have to admit, I was a little leery coming out to Gardena to a dive bar, but I'm so happy I did. We were celebrating a friends birthday and this is her local watering hole. We were warned it was a dive bar, which I love. Read some great reviews but didn't really get a "feel"on the place. Not much of a theme, but fun. Plenty of free parking on the street. Walked in to a diverse crowd of fun people. Long bar where you can belly up. Further to the back left, I'm going to call it the party room, looks a bit like it doubled as a secondhand store during the day. But regardless of the aesthetics, this place bumped! We sang kareoke. We danced. We ate. We drank. We had a blast! Our bartender was friendly and very attentive and served strong drinks at unbelievably reasonable prices! There were a couple kitties walking about. Which is cute but I'm totally allergic. At some point it got so crowded, an older lady (likely owner) picked up the cat and brought to the back room. The crowd was friendly and diverse. Don't go here if your not a guy. I went with my boyfriend for a drink and the bartenders ignored us. The older bartender got us our drinks after a couple of min. But the younger one named Laura couldn't bother to even look at the side of the bar that we where at, she was too busy with here regular on the other side of the bar, of course all men flirting with her, being rowdy. When I went to the bathroom they started and gave me cat calls, thank God my boyfriend didn't see that. A regular yelled her name to get her attention, so I did the same for our second drinks, she came over with an attitude, said that I had disrespected her and was just a bitch to us. This place feels like home. We have gone almost every Friday after work for the last two years and the bartenders know our names. We have hosted multiple work events in the back room as well. When all this is safe and open again after coronavirus, this will be one of my first stops. If there is some way anyone knows to support them during the shut down, let me know. I forgot to post this but I still remember how awful these ladies treated us! This was pre COVID. It's Tuesday night. Got out late but we still wanted to go have one drink out. Saw such good reviews about this place how cool everyone is and nice the bartenders are. That was so not the case! I have to still write this because I have never seen female bartenders act so disrespectful and rude. It was 1:30. There was a birthday party going on for an obvious regular because everyone knew each other. First of all we walked in and everyone stared at us and then when we stood at the bar we were blatantly ignored. The two bartenders weren't serving drinks they were just standing there laughing. Finally when we had to say "excuse me, can we order something?" After like 15 minutes. Then the girl we asked, looked at her friend, who then walked closer, but not up to us, and said "we aren't serving alcohol anymore." Um, ok but why did it take almost half an hour to tell us that? I really honestly feel that I was treated this way because of how I look and that really sucks! Some of the other patrons made rude comments to me and that's why I feel confident stating that. Kiesha Kiesha Kiesha! This bar is my home bar. The age range is from 21 to coffin so there is conversation for everyone (if that's what your looking for). There is Karaoke in back and a smoking area. It's a home bar for many without the "your not from here are you" feel. The service is BAR none. Which brings me back to the beginning of my post. I had been going to the Desert Room for some time when I moved to Gardena in 2017. However, last May, I had a very horrific incident happen in which one of their bartenders named Amber, refused to serve me because I had come with a person she had a personal vendetta against and I told her off. The issue is that she did not refuse to serve me right away (she served me one drink when I arrived), but she arbitrarily decided not to serve me another drink after the first one. When I asked her why, she merely stated, "You know why," as she glared at me across the bar. After I told her that she would regret that, she came from around the bar and shoved me on the shoulder, causing me to stagger back. When I returned the next day to speak to the elderly lady that manages the bar, she listened to my account, but basically backed up her bartender and refused to do anything about it, stating that she would speak with her. To my knowledge, she is still employed there. While in some cases I think that it would be warranted to back up the people you manage behind your bar, had I gone to the cops or got hurt, it could have been a potential lawsuit on their hands. The way they handled the whole incident was appalling, completely unacceptable, and unprofessional. I wanted to end the review by saying that overall, the other bartenders are really great, and the drinks are good and moderately priced. It also has a quaint little atmosphere with a pool table and another room for antiques and books, which is quite charming. Occasionally, they offer free popcorn and finger foods, which is also nice. It's too bad I will not be returning. I would also like to recommend that anyone who would like to avoid potentially getting physically assaulted stay far and away. I've passed by the Desert Room so many times while cruising on my bike, but never did I think to stop by for a drink, mainly because of all the salt and peppered hair people that I see walking in and out. Nevertheless a friend invited me in for a drink after work and I couldn't resist. The bar is pretty big, with two large drinking areas, a main bar in the first room and a smaller side bar in the adjacent room. Plus they have a pool table and a karaoke machine for you're enjoyment and if that wasn't good enough they also have a popcorn machine. Oh and did I mention the dirt-cheap stiff drinks? Three candy corona's later my tab for the night was $11.50, I usually pay that for ONE WHOLE DRINK! If you're reading this, please don't get offended with what Im writing. Believe me, I would be the last person to say anything bad about this place considering it used to be my home away from home. I met a lot of good people here and created a lot of wonderful memories. I used to frequent the place And it was mainly for the great people and feeling of safety. That's no longer the case. Long story short, I was physically assaulted by their employee (Clark) and his girlfriend (Susan) Ive reported this incident with the authorities due to the fact that they continued to harass me after the event and even though I no longer step into the establishment.. I posted a picture of the bruises on my neck but it somehow got deleted by, I don't know whom. This event by far, trumps any other concerns I might have had in the past. Which, cannot be ignored or forgiven. What has me at loss is that, I was blamed for the incident and no one was reprimanded. You just cannot go around acting like a Neanderthal. I dont know about you but I for one, do not support any establishment who will allow their employees to go around choking females. To show the arrogance and lack of decency, Clark "liked" the photo I posted of my bruised neck, as if he pride himself of his actions. The desert room has a pool table :) I came here with my partner and her two friends after one of them recommended it. Not sure if that's legal but no one seems to care. The decor is low light, dive bar ish, and just all around chill.
