I ventured into my old favorite spot, after having moved away about a year ago, and realized immediately that this bar has changed. It was swarming with gang-bangers and witnessed 3 brawls in about a 30 minute time span. WHERE THE HELL IS SPOT ? She would never have allowed this kind of behavior! She always made every one feel safe even in a neighborhood that has alot to be desired. Upon further inquiries I found out that the owner had let her go. Dumb move on the owners part. This cool lil' hole-in-the-wall dive bar that I used to consider my second home has gone to shit. The new bartenders are slow as molasses and really can't handle a large crowd or how to lay down the law when a customer gets belligerent and out of hand. SPOT!!!!! WHERE ARE YOU???? This place is horrible!!!! You are allowed to smoke in this bar. Isn't that against the law? Hmmmm, I wonder who the owner is sucking up to down at the Gardena Police station to let her continue this. I've seen the cops walk in the bar and say nothing about the people smoking. The Owner allows anyone off the streets in even drunk people and will continue to serve them even after they appear to be drunk. The owner does not care about anyone's safety or well being its all about making money. I thought you were suppose to stop serving someone who can barely stand up? She charges $1 for tap water anything to make a buck. Stear clear of this place . There are flea infested cats wondering in the bar so disgusting. This place should be condemned. read more

Just a cool neighborhood bar. I come here occasionally, have been for a few years now. Regular people patronize the Desert Room, there's nothing showy going on, no pretenses, people chat with you whether they know you or not and someone's usually laughing about something. I've had drinks bought for me for no reason at all. You won't find your buttoned-up bartenders or an exotic drink menu but they always seem to keep things flowing. Good place to grab a beer or well drink at the end of the day. And the library is a homey, quite annex to the main bar where you can dive into your iPad if you need to while sipping your cocktail. read more

I come here fairly often with friends, co workers, and family. Been to a lot of birthday celebrations here so its a good spot for that. The staff is cool, the prices are cool, and the music is pretty good. Any blues fan will love the sunday nights jam sessions. but the music and entertainment on other nights is really good too. Its just a good bar and provides what people are looking for with the bar experience. Meanwhile, original bartenders were bending over backwards for everybody. We, in the old crowd, are familiar enough w/ each other for some small talk at the bar while waiting for drinks. They were as confused and shocked as I was about the service. I don't even want to mention what I saw in owner/staff interactions, but I'ma just leave it at sad. It was just sad. I'm not a regular regular, but Southland was the spot for my friends and me when we wanted a night out together for past couple years. Now, we're back to bar-hopping for a new spot because The Alley Bar ain't it.
