Came here after dinner at a sushi spot. The barcade was packed--people were watching **RuPaul's Drag Race**, playing games, eating, and drinking. It took a while to get drinks since there were only about 2-3 bartenders. We didn't try the food because we'd already eaten. The lighting was kind of dark, and it got noisy with people cheering and commenting on the show. The decor was cute--neon drawings on the walls, a small rainbow bridge above the pinball machines, and other fun touches. The games were fun but cost around $1 each. Glad they had drink holders at some of the machines. They also had some board games you could play at the high tables. Most people cleared out once the show on TV ended. I've had my eye on this bar for a while since I saw the Super Smash Bros Monday tournaments advertised. I finally came here on a Friday and was able to indulge in some gaming. I was humbled and reminded that I need to brush up on my skills in the game but one of the bartenders, Joel, was kind enough to make me a nice drink to soften the blow of my losses. What a superb place I accidentally stumbled upon during a stroll down Market. I thought this might have been an ode to the old Detour, which I have find memories. Rather, this is a great new spin off a familiar name, complete with pinball, 80s video games, a bat and restaurant. While this initial visit involved a play on the vintage Ms. Pac-Man and Galaga machines, I'll be back hopefully for a bit more. This place is such a fun hangout spot--I've been a few times now and it never disappoints. The atmosphere is electric, especially on the weekends. This was a fun little spot we stopped at the other night. It was definitely packed and buzzing with people. It was literally the only bar in the entire area that actually carted me at the door. They had tons of arcade games and some tournaments going on but it was incredibly loud inside . This is probably a really nice spot to have some fun, but not the greatest place if you want to have a conversation or catch up with someone . It was good for people watching for a little while as plenty of guys were being loud , playing around , and taking silly selfies . The employees also use a loudspeaker, probably because of the high volume inside so if you have any auditory issues, this might not be the place for you. The restroom seemed fairly clean, but they didn't have anywhere to hang a purse so I ended up having to sit there with my bag on my lap which is never enjoyable. Also, they didn't have any flavored vodkas so the drinks were quite bland and we didn't stay long. Still, I would come back again if I just wanted to have fun and play some games. read more

The detour is a super fun arcade bar in the Castro with tons of delicious drinks, friendly staff, and tasty food items. When I went with friends we decided to go for their Thursday trivia night and it was quite packed so I definitely recommend planning on arriving early. Luckily we were able to snag a seat and competed in the trivia challenge but did quite awful and lost by a lot haha - nevertheless, the vibes were immaculate and it was a great time. The only downside was that the bar was incredibly noisy it made it very difficult to hear one another and there was not enough seating for everyone so many people had to stand. We ordered the pizza, some tater tots, some fried corn dogs, beer, and eggrolls. All of which were solid and tasty with my favorite being the pizza. They had smash on the big screen for people to play (just need to exchange ID for a controller). The drink I got was really good (Creamsicle) -- super sweet and fruity. The arcade games are pretty limited and the space inside is small; personally I prefer thriller arcade bar and emporium for their variety and types of games. We've been to a lot of arcade bars over the years, and the Detour is one of our faves. We were pretty let down after a slightly gross night at Emporium, and Detour couldn't have been more different. Even on a busy Saturday night, we don't have to push through people to play games, and the machines are in good shape (not sticky like at some other places!) The drinks are POTENT - you will get your money's worth. The bartenders are always nice and quick, even during a rush. I've played Super Smash Bros a few times at the bar - all you have to do is turn in your license for the duration of your play. Looking forward to our next night out at the Detour. read more

I came here to Wednesday to play drag bingo and celebrate my birthday. My friends and I had a great time! Our MC/host of the night was a gorgeous gal and she did a great job keeping us entertained throughout the night. They have drag bingo every Wednesday from 7PM to 10PM. Their menu was very interesting. They offer a unique spin on asian fusion dishes. We ordered 2 rounds of lumpia and the okonomiyaki tater tots. Both were piping hot and absolutely delicious. I honestly didn't need the tater tots because the cabbage salad on top was very filling, but still light. Toward the back of the bar they have your old school Pacman and Mrs. Pacman along with other classic racing and shooter games. They've also got a fooseball table, life size connect 4, skeeball, and a basket hoop game among other things. I came here with my boyfriend and his brother yesterday afternoon. We came around 4pm so it wasn't too busy but picked up when we left. The place is cute with a lot of neon light decoration and gaming memorabilia. There's games and tables in the front and in the back so you can choose where to sit, first come first serve. Luckily we were able to snag a table! Ordering food and drinks were a breeze. You order at the main bar for both. The bartenders were super friendly and nice. I enjoyed my piña colada, while the guys mentioned they didn't have many beer options which was a bummer. The food menu consisted of Asian fusion dishes. I was excited to try them but it was kind of disappointing. I ordered the longganisa corn dogs and my boyfriend got the grilled chicken brunch bowl. The corn dogs were both too salty and lacked flavor. The sauce had a nice acidity from the calamansi but I couldn't really taste the sweetness from the longganisa to balance it out. My bf just mentioned the chicken bowl isn't what he expected. While they had quite a few games, many were out of order (as well as the ATM and one token machine). One skee ball lane wasn't accepting the coins and they only have one basketball hoop so we were rotating and couldn't compete with each other. I like the option to do board games for people who aren't super into arcades. We had started playing scrabble and then got to my FAVORITE part - Mario Kart!!! This is my favorite and most frequented bar. Even if you don't drink it's very worth it for food, games and events. The bar itself is quite good with typical SF bar prices. The food is amazing. Rather than basic American bar food, the menu contains a wide variety of often Asian inspired options that are quite exciting and much I imagine you won't find elsewhere. The plant-based options are quite good as well. I also appriciate that their menu has different markers for vegetarian and vegan. Service is always excellent and speedy (though some food items take a while). If you like retro arcade games, you'll love their selection, which includes a machine containing many lesser known classics. They also have several indie cabinets, which sans Killer Queen, I imagine are very hard to find. The atmosphere is nice and fun. Another thing really making this place stand out is great weekly and monthly events and activities, free or decently priced. I am a regular at their weekly drag queen hosted bingo and always have a great time. I have some small nitpicks, but nothing worthy of taking away from a 5 star review. Namely, I was disappointed when they recently raised the price of their soda gun soft drinks (which feature free refills) from $3 to $5, though that's still a pretty good deal for soft drinks at an SF bar. I also find it a little disappointing that drag bingo wheel bothers to only contain vegetarian options for the food prizes, but one of them is not plant-based/vegan. It is a very popular item (the lumpia) though so it's probably there to stay, and this is just a tiny personal nitpick. Overall, I honestly can't recommend this place enough as an excellent hangout. read more

This casual but lively arcade bar is perfect for small groups! Came here with my partner on a Friday night around 11pm and it was decently busy but there was no wait for the bar and a lot of games were open. They have a bunch of classic arcade machines that were to play, as well as some free games like a giant Jenga set and a TV for playing play station games. The paid arcade games were $1 per person per game, and there's a machine that takes cash and exchange them for quarters that you can use. Space is a little tight so wouldn't recommend coming with more than 3-4 people, but the atmosphere was pretty relaxed and had good energy, nothing too fancy! For drinks we ordered a piña colada and a creamsicle, both which were decent. The Detour is a great arcade and bar in the Castro District that can easily be missed. In fact, I had never heard of the place until I was walking to my hotel on the same block and noticed the neon lighting insde. We returned later at night to check it out, and had a great time. They have plenty of old school arcade games, including a giant screen right at the bar with guests playing Mario Party. They also have the original Super Mario Bros game here, as well as a few Japanese style arcade machines (with lower seating). There are plenty of pinball machines in the back, and lots of space overall, with tables and seating in the front room along with bar seating (and even a few tables and seats outside), for enjoying drinks and snacks. We tried the longanisa corn dogs and lumpia, and they were freshly cooked and served hot, and tasted really good, the longanisa even had a nice char on it. They also have plenty of board games to choose from if you're not too into video games. We played a card game called Cruel Choices while drinking our beers and enjoying our late night snacks, and it was pretty fun. The water is self-serve next to the bar, but it wasn't very cold, room temperature at best. There's a self-serve water station near the games in the back that actually had cold water, but it's sort of hidden along the wall. There were several games out of order, but hey, can't expect everything to be perfect. That's a small inconvenience, considering that the food and service were good, and the atmosphere was cool. And I liked that it's more of an independent spot than say, Dave & Buster's.  By the way, on a Saturday, hours online and signs on their window say they're open till 2am, the menu says they serve food till 12:30am, and the worker at the door said they closed at 12 midnight... some inconsistencies here?!?!
